Hi, everyone.

My name is Ms. Voyle and welcome to today's lesson where we are going to be exploring and analysing the characterization of Hogarth in Chapter 3 of "The Iron Man".

For this lesson, you need the 2005 Faber & Faber edition of "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes.

Pause the video and get your copy now.

Great.

Now, I know you have the book with you.

During this lesson, you'll need to be listening and looking carefully.

There'll be tasks where you need somebody to talk to and you'll also need a piece of paper and pen or pencil for creating your character profile for Hogarth.

I hope you're feeling excited and ready to learn.

Let's get started.

The learning outcome for today's lesson is I can analyse the characterization of Hogarth in "The Iron Man".

Here are our key words for today's lesson.

Let's practise saying them.

My turn, your turn.

Characterization, character traits, role on the wall.

Great job.

Well done.

Let's take a look at their definitions.

Characterization is the way an author describes and develops the personalities and traits of a character.

Character traits are the special qualities that make a character in a story unique and interesting.

And role on the wall is a character analysis activity which encourages readers to infer.

There are two parts to today's lesson.

In the first part, we will be recapping, summarising, and reading some of Chapter 3 of "The Iron Man".

And in the second part, we will be exploring and analysing the characterization of Hogarth.

So, let's begin with Chapter 3 of "The Iron Man".

What do we know about "The Iron Man"? It is a fiction text written by the English poet and author Ted Hughes.

It belongs to the genre of science fiction, which involves imaginative and futuristic concepts linked to science and technology.

And the protagonist in "The Iron Man" is a robotic giant named the Iron Man.

Let's recap and summarise what's happened in Chapter 2 first.

A young boy named Hogarth spotted Iron Man and told his parents.

His father went out in search of the giant.

The farmers in the land grappled with the news and Hogarth's father made a close escape from the Iron Man.

The following morning, the residents of the farms found all of their machinery missing or half eaten, and they knew it was the Iron Man.

The farmers dug a huge hole to trap the Iron Man, but he never came.

Eventually, he reappeared and Hogarth lured him into the hole.

The farmers were overjoyed and rallied to fill the hole.

After they buried the Iron Man, Hogarth's feelings shifted to sorrow and guilt.

Let's check your understanding.

True or false, everyone was relieved once the Iron Man had been buried.

Pause the video and select your answer.

That is false.

Well done.

Now, it's time to justify your answer.

A, Hogarth's feelings shifted to sorrow and guilt.

Or, B, the farmers were overjoyed.

Pause the video and select the correct justification.

The answer is A.

Well done.

Hogarth's feelings shifted to sorrow and guilt, so he was not relieved.

Hogarth initially feared the Iron Man just like the farmers, and he lured the Iron Man into the hole to help trap him.

We know that at the end of Chapter 2, Hogarth's feelings shifted to sorrow and guilt.

We can infer that Hogarth empathised with the Iron Man once he had been buried and that he felt responsible for trapping him.

In Chapter 3, the Iron Man resurfaces from the ground the following calendar year.

Hogarth's feelings at the end of Chapter 2 give us a clue about what may happen in Chapter 3.

Let's check your understanding.

Based on Hogarth's feelings at the end of Chapter 2, which of the following would be a sensible prediction? A, when the Iron Man resurfaces, Hogarth tries to bury him again.

B, when the Iron Man resurfaces, he no longer needs metal.

Or, C, when the Iron Man resurfaces, Hogarth responds to him differently.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

The answer is C.

Well done.

A sensible prediction would be that when the Iron Man resurfaces, Hogarth responds to him differently.

Let's now summarise the beginning of Chapter 3 of the Iron Man.

By spring of the following calendar year, the mound over the Iron Man was covered in fresh grass and flowers.

People picnicked there.

While a family had their picnic one day, the ground beneath them began to shake.

Then, the ground began to split and a huge crack grew.

First, the Iron Man's hand reached through the crack, causing the family to run away.

Then, the Iron Man rose out of the ground.

The farmers wanted to respond by calling in armed forces to destroy the Iron Man, but Hogarth had a different idea and they agreed to try it.

Let's check your understanding.

Put the following events in order from one to four to show the chronology of events at the beginning of Chapter 3 of "The Iron Man".

A, Hogarth persuaded the farmers to try his idea and respond differently.

B, while a family picnicked one day, the ground shook and split open.

C, the Iron Man's hands reached through the crack and the family ran.

D, by spring, people were picnicking on the mound above the Iron Man.

Pause the video and number these one to four now to show the chronology.

Let's take a look at the answers together.

One, by spring, people were picnicking on the mound above the Iron Man.

Two, while a family picnicked one day, the ground shook and split open.

Three, the Iron Man's hands reached through the crack and the family ran.

Four, Hogarth persuaded the farmers to try his idea and respond differently.

Well done for showing your knowledge of the chronology of events at the beginning of Chapter 3.

The reader does not find out what Hogarth's plan is straight away.

The Iron Man is described as devouring whatever metal he can find upon exiting the earth.

Let's now find out how Hogarth responds to the Iron Man.

Pause the video and read or listen to the story from pages 32 to 34.

Welcome back.

I hope you enjoyed reading those pages of the story.

Let's now check your understanding of what you have read.

How did Hogarth get to the attention of the Iron Man? Refer to page 32.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

The answer is C.

Well done.

Hogarth got the attention of the Iron Man by making a clinking sound with metal.

True or false, Hogarth showed the Iron Man that he understood his needs.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

That is true.

Well done.

Now, can you justify your answer? A, Hogarth apologised for trapping and burying him.

Or, B, Hogarth explained there was a way for the Iron Man to have access to unlimited metal.

Pause the video and select the correct justification.

The answer is B.

Well done.

Hogarth showed the Iron Man that he understood his needs by explaining that there was a way for him to have access to unlimited metal.

Which of the following appropriately describes Hogarth's plan? A, a dangerous problem.

B, a positive solution.

Or, C, an exciting adventure.

Pause the video and select your answer.

The answer is B, Hogarth's plan can be described as a positive solution.

Well done.

It's now time for your first task and it is a talk task.

Discuss with your partner why Hogarth's plan was a positive solution.

Consider the impact on the Iron Man and the farmers.

Your sentence started up, Hogarth's plan was a positive solution for the Iron Man, because.

And Hogarth's plan was a positive solution for the farmers, because.

Pause the video and discuss with your partner now.

Welcome back.

You were so great at analysing and explaining why Hogarth's plan was a positive solution for the Iron Man and the farmers.

Let's take a look at some of the answers I had.

Sam said, Hogarth's plan was a positive solution for the Iron Man, because the Iron Man was not caused any harm.

I think he felt understood by Hogarth and was able to meet his needs of eating metal.

And Alex said, Hogarth's plan was a positive solution for the farmers, because the Iron Man now had unlimited metal in the scrap yard, so he didn't need their machinery.

Maybe it was also handy, so that the scrap yard metal wouldn't pile up.

Well done for showing a great understanding of Chapter 3 of "The Iron Man".

It's now time for the second part of our lesson where we are going to be exploring and analysing the characterization of Hogarth.

We are now going to explore the characterization of Hogarth.

What is characterization? Characterization is the way an author describes and develops the personalities and traits of the characters in a story.

We can identify character traits by exploring a character's experiences and actions and making inferences.

Character traits are the special qualities that make a character in a story unique and interesting.

For example, brave, kind, rude.

Let's check your understanding.

What is a character trait? A, the special qualities that make a character in a story unique and interesting.

B, how a character looks.

Or, C, the activities that a character enjoys.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

The answer is A.

Well done.

A character trait refers to special qualities that make a character in a story unique and interesting.

We can learn a lot about Hogarth's character traits through his ultimate response to the Iron Man.

Let's look at some examples of Hogarth's experiences and actions and what we can infer about his character from them.

Hogarth felt sorrow and guilt after the Iron Man was buried.

We can infer that Hogarth is moral.

This means that he is concerned with what is right and wrong.

Hogarth opposed the farmer's idea to bring in the armed forces.

This demonstrates that Hogarth is compassionate, which means acting with concern for another.

Hogarth developed a plan that was positive for everyone.

This lets us know that Hogarth is resourceful, which means finding clever ways to overcome difficulties.

Let's check your understanding.

Match the character traits we can infer from Hogarth's experiences and actions to the correct definition.

The character traits are, A, moral, B, compassionate, C, resourceful.

The definitions are having the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.

Being concerned with the principles of right and wrong behaviour.

And feeling or acting in a way that shows sympathy and concern for others.

Pause the video now and match these character traits to their definition.

Let's take a look at the answers together.

Moral means being concerned with the principles of right and wrong behaviour.

Compassionate means feeling or acting in a way that shows sympathy and concern for others.

And resourceful means having the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.

Well done for demonstrating your understanding of these character traits that Hogarth shows.

You are going to create a character profile for Hogarth.

You will be identifying the following.

Experiences and interactions that are important to Hogarth.

And character traits and feelings belonging to Hogarth.

We are going to use role on the wall to complete a character profile for Hogarth.

Here is a character outline.

On the outside, we are going to note down experiences, actions, and interactions that are important in shaping Hogarth's character to date.

And on the inside, we are going to note down character traits that make Hogarth who he is and important feelings he has experienced.

Let's check your understanding.

Which of the following are we going to write on the inside of the character outline? A, Hogarth's character traits.

B, Hogarth's interactions with other characters.

C, Hogarth's experiences in life.

D, Hogarth's feelings.

Pause the video and select the correct answers.

The answers are A and D.

Well done.

On the inside of the character outline, you will note down Hogarth's character traits and his feelings.

Let's now take a look at an example of role on the wall for Hogarth.

We know that Hogarth responded differently to the farmers after the Iron Man was buried.

This demonstrated his feelings of sadness and it showed that he had strong morals.

We know that Hogarth opposed the farmers calling in the armed forces.

This showed that he was brave, because he was standing up for what he felt was right even though it wasn't what the farmers wanted.

Noting down Hogarth's experiences and interactions on the outside will help you develop character traits and feelings to note down on the inside.

It's now time for your task.

Complete a role on the wall for Hogarth.

Remember, on the outside, note down experiences and interactions that are important in shaping Hogarth's character.

And on the inside, note down character traits that make Hogarth who he is and important feelings he has experienced.

Pause the video and do the task now.

Welcome back.

I loved seeing all of your character profiles for Hogarth.

You were great at using his experiences and interactions to infer and identify character traits and feelings.

Let's take a look at some possible examples of what you might have written down.

On the outside, have you included Hogarth's experiences and interactions? You might have written, responded differently to the farmers when the Iron Man was buried.

Opposed the farmers' idea to bring in the armed forces.

Developed a plan that was positive for the Iron Man and the farmers.

Worked hard to understand the Iron Man and identify his needs.

On the inside, have you identified Hogarth's character traits and feelings? Hopefully you identified his feelings of sorrow, guilt, sadness, regret, and empathy after the Iron Man was buried.

You might have inferred that he was brave, compassionate, moral, and kind, because he opposed the farmer's idea to bring in the armed forces.

Maybe you said that he is resourceful, determined, creative, protective, because he came up with such a positive solution that didn't involve hurting the Iron Man and protected everyone.

And you may have also inferred that Hogarth is understanding, intuitive, perceptive, because he was great at understanding and identifying the Iron Man's needs.

Well done for showing a great understanding of the characterization of Hogarth.

We've now come to the end of our lesson, so let's go over a summary together.

In Chapter 3 of the Iron Man, Hogarth persuades the farmers to respond differently to the Iron Man when he resurfaces.

Hogarth identifies the Iron Man's needs and comes up with a solution that benefits him and protects the humans.

Characterization is the way an author describes and develops the personalities and traits of characters in the story.

We can identify Hogarth's character traits by exploring his experiences and interactions and making inferences.

And Hogarth displays a range of character traits such as being compassionate and resourceful.

I have really enjoyed teaching you this lesson and I hope you have enjoyed learning.
