Hi, everyone, my name is Ms. Voyle, and welcome to today's lesson where we are going to be discussing chapters four and five of "The Iron Man" and looking at the evolution of the Iron Man's character.

For this lesson, you need a copy of the 2005 Faber & Faber edition of "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes.

Pause the video and get your copy now.

Great.

Now I know you have the book with you.

During this lesson, you'll need to be listening and looking carefully, and there will also be tasks where you need somebody to talk to.

I hope you are feeling excited and ready to learn.

Let's get started.

The learning outcome for today's lesson is, I can discuss how the Iron Man's character evolves over the course of the story.

Here are our key words for today's lesson.

Let's practise saying them.

My turn, your turn.

Character arc.

Evolve.

View.

Great job, well done.

Let's now look at their definitions.

A character arc is a character's transformation or journey over the course of a story.

Evolve means to develop gradually.

And view means a particular opinion or way of thinking about someone or something.

There are two parts to today's lesson.

In the first part, we will be recapping and summarising chapter four, and in the second part we will be reading chapter five.

So let's begin with chapter four of "The Iron Man." What do we know about "The Iron Man"? It is a fiction text written by the English poet and author Ted Hughes.

It belongs to the genre of science fiction, which involves imaginative and futuristic concepts linked to science and technology.

The protagonist in "The Iron Man" is a robotic giant named The Iron Man.

Let's recap and summarise what's happened in chapters one, two, and three of "The Iron Man." In chapter one, the mysterious Iron Man fell off a cliff and his body broke apart.

He gradually pieced himself back together and went into the sea.

In chapter two, Hogarth encountered the Iron Man.

The Iron Man ate all of the farmers' machinery and they responded by trapping and burying him.

In chapter three, the Iron Man resurfaced.

Hogarth persuaded the farmers not to hurt the Iron Man and instead found him a home in a metal scrapyard.

Let's check your understanding.

True or false? At the end of chapter three, humanity still fears the Iron Man.

Pause the video and select your answer.

That is false.

Well done.

Now it's time to justify your answer.

A, Hogarth's solution demonstrated that the Iron Man did not need to be feared, but that he just needed metal to survive.

Or B, Hogarth's solution demonstrated that the Iron Man was a playful and funny character.

Pause the video and select the correct justification.

The answer is A.

Well done.

Hogarth's solution demonstrated that the Iron Man did not need to be feared, but that he just needed metal to survive.

Chapter four of "The Iron Man" introduced a new character and took the plot of the story in a new direction.

Do you remember the name of this character and the problem they are posing? Pause the video and discuss with your partner.

The character introduced in chapter four is the space-bat-angel-dragon, a creature from space that came down to Earth.

The space-bat-angel-dragon landed on Australia and its body covered the country.

It demanded to be fed with living organisms. Let's summarise the events from chapter four of "The Iron Man." A star in the sky gradually appeared bigger as it moved closer to Earth.

Astronomers identified a black flying creature on this star.

The terrific creature landed on Australia and covered the entire country.

It demanded to be fed with living organisms, but humanity refused.

The world waged a war to try and destroy the creature, but they failed.

The creature gave a deadline to provide food before he would attack the Earth.

Hogarth sought the help of the Iron Man.

The Iron Man said he would go to Australia to battle and defeat the space-bat-angel-dragon.

Let's now check your understanding of chapter four.

Put the following events in order, from one to four, to show the correct chronology of events in chapter four of "The Iron Man." I will read these to you.

A, humanity failed in destroying the creature and were given a deadline to provide food before he attacked the Earth.

B, a star moved towards Earth with a black flying creature on it.

C, the creature landed on Australia and demanded to be fed.

D, Hogarth sought the help of the Iron Man, who said he would battle and defeat the space-bat-angel-dragon.

Pause the video and number these one to four now to show the correct chronology.

Let's take a look at the answers together.

One, a star moved towards Earth with a black flying creature on it.

Two, the creature landed on Australia and demanded to be fed.

Three, humanity failed in destroying the creature and were given a deadline to provide food before he attacked the Earth.

And four, Hogarth sought the help of the Iron Man, who said he would battle and defeat the space-bat-angel-dragon.

Well done for showing your understanding of the chronology of chapter four.

In this lesson, we are going to consider how the Iron Man's character evolves over the course of the story.

Evolve means to develop gradually.

We are going to look at the character arc of the Iron Man.

A character arc is a character's transformation or journey over the course of a story, so how a character evolves.

Let's check your understanding.

What is a character arc? A, how a character evolves over the course of a story.

B, what a character is like at the beginning of a story.

Or C, the ultimate fate of a character.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

The answer is A.

Well done.

A character arc is how a character evolves over the course of a story.

Let's look at the Iron Man's character arc so far through the way he is viewed by other characters.

In chapter one, the Iron Man is seen as mysterious and different.

In chapter two, the Iron Man is feared and hated for the impact he is having on the farmers' lives.

In chapter three, the Iron Man begins to become understood and accepted, and he finds his home in the metal scrapyard.

By the end of chapter four, the Iron Man is a respected character who is needed in order to help protect the Earth.

Let's check your understanding.

True or false? The way the Iron Man is viewed evolves over the course of the story.

Pause the video and select your answer.

That is true.

Well done.

Now can you justify? A, humanity views the Iron Man as harmless.

Or B, humanity begins to understand the Iron Man and ultimately they require his strength to help protect the Earth.

Pause the video and select the correct justification.

The answer is B.

Well done.

Humanity begins to understand the Iron Man over the course of the story, and ultimately by the end of chapter four, they require his strength to help protect the Earth.

It's now time for your first task and it is a talk task.

Discuss and predict what you think will happen to the Iron Man's character arc in chapter five when he battles the space-bat-angel-dragon.

How do you think the Iron Man's character will be viewed by the end of chapter five? Your sentence starter is, "I predict that the Iron Man will be.

because.

." Pause the video and discuss with your partner now to make your prediction.

Welcome back.

Well done for discussing this with your partner.

I really enjoyed listening to all of your thoughts.

Most of you had a very similar prediction, which was, "I predict that the Iron Man will be admired because I think he will defeat the space-bat-angel-dragon and save the Earth." That means that the Iron Man's character arc would look like this.

His character would continue to be viewed in an even more positive light as he becomes admired and celebrated.

Well done for reflecting on the story so far and how the Iron Man's character has evolved in order to make a prediction about what will happen to his character arc in the rest of the story.

It's now time for the second part of our lesson, where we will be reading and reflecting on chapter five of "The Iron Man." You are now going to read the final chapter of "The Iron Man." We will discover what's happens in the battle between the Iron Man and the space-bat-angel-dragon.

Pause the video now and read or listen to the story, from pages 49 to 54.

Come back and press play when you are ready.

I hope you enjoyed reading the beginning of chapter five.

Let's check your understanding of what you've read so far.

Why do you think this space-bat-angel-dragon agreed to be a "slave" to the Iron Man if he lost the strength test? Refer to page 51 to answer.

A, he didn't mind what happened to him.

B, He thought there was no way the Iron Man would win.

Or C, he thought it would be a fun challenge.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

The answer is B.

Well done.

The space-bat-angel-dragon thought there was no way the Iron Man would win in a strength test because he was so much bigger than him.

Why do you think the Iron Man chose tolerating heat as the strength test? A, because he loved fire.

B, because he thought it was the fairest challenge.

Or C, because he knew his iron body could withstand heat better.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

The answer is C.

Well done.

The Iron Man chose tolerating heat as the strength test because he knew that his iron body could withstand heat better than the space-bat-angel-dragon's could.

It's now time to continue reading.

Pause the video and read or listen to the story, from page 55 to the very end on page 62.

Come back and press play when you are ready.

Welcome back.

I hope you thoroughly enjoyed reading to the end of the story.

Let's check your understanding.

True or false? The Iron Man won the challenge easily.

Pause the video and select the correct answer.

That is false.

Well done.

Now can you justify your answer? A, the Iron man struggled, but had the strength to continue.

The space-bat-angel-dragon was too damaged and gave up.

Or B, the space-bat-angel-dragon beat the Iron Man.

Pause the video and select the correct justification.

The answer is A.

Well done.

The Iron Man struggled, but had the strength to continue, whereas the space-bat-angel-dragon was too damaged and gave up.

Why did the Iron Man instruct the space-bat-angel-dragon to make music in space as a "slave"? A, this music would have a peaceful effect on the Earth.

B, he liked the sound of music.

Or C, he thought it would be the worst punishment.

Pause the video and select your answer.

The answer is A.

Well done.

The Iron Man instructed the space-bat-angel-dragon to make music in space as a slave because this music would have a peaceful effect on the Earth.

It's now time for your final task.

Read from the last paragraph on page 61 up to the end of the story again and discuss the following question.

How does the Iron Man's character evolve over the course of the story? Consider how he is viewed.

Here are some sentence starters to help you.

"At the beginning of the story, the Iron Man is.

because.

." "As time goes on, the Iron Man becomes.

because.

." And, "By the end of the story, the Iron Man is.

because.

." Pause the video and discuss with your partner now.

Welcome back.

Well done for analysing how the Iron Man's character evolved over the course of the story.

I really enjoyed listening to your discussions.

Let's take a look at the answers I heard.

"At the beginning of the story, the Iron Man is a mysterious and feared character because he's different and appears to pose a threat." "As time goes on, the Iron Man becomes more understood and accepted because he humanity recognises that he was not trying to cause harm." "By the end of the story, the Iron Man is admired and viewed a hero because he protects the Earth and brings greater peace to it." Well done for discussing and understanding the Iron Man's character arc in the story.

We've now come to the end of our lesson, so let's go over a summary together.

In chapter four of "The Iron Man," the world faces a threat from a flying creature named the space-bat-angel-dragon.

In chapter five of "The Iron Man," the Iron Man defeats the space-bat-angel-dragon and protects the Earth.

A character arc is a character's transformation or journey over the course of a story.

We can examine the Iron Man's character arc by considering how he is viewed by others over the course of the story.

And the Iron Man's character evolves from one that is feared into one that is understood and viewed as a hero.

Well done again for all of your hard work in today's lesson.

I have really enjoyed teaching you.
