Hello, my name is Miss Willow, and I'm going to be teaching you today's lesson.
Today's lesson is called Choosing Food Carefully, and it fits into the unit Physical Health: How can I get active and eat well every day? During this lesson, we're going to be talking about some sensitive topics, so we recommend that you have an adult with you for the duration of this lesson.
If at any point you do feel uncomfortable, it's really important that you close the screen and that you go and speak to a trusted adult.
Okay.
Let's make a start on today's learning.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to explain which foods help to keep your body healthy.
Before we get started, we need to go over some ground rules.
These help to make sure that everyone feels safe and comfortable throughout today's lesson.
First of all, Laura says that we need to listen to others.
This means that we are not going to interrupt other people if they're speaking.
Jacob says we need to not have any judgement.
That means that if someone chooses to share a story or an experience, we are not going to judge them.
Andeep says respect each other's privacy.
This means that we're not going to ask anyone any personal questions, as this can make people feel uncomfortable.
And finally, Izzy says that we can choose our level of participation.
This means that it's up to us how much we want to join in.
We're now going to go through the keywords for today's lesson.
The first keyword is nutrients: these are substances that are found in foods that help our bodies to live and grow.
Diet: this is the kinds of foods that a person eats.
Healthy: when something is healthy, it means that it's good for us, our minds and our bodies.
As we go through today's lesson, keep an eye out for these words as they come up and see if you can remember what they mean.
Today's lesson is split into three learning cycles.
The first learning cycle is called What are nutrients? The second learning cycle is called Why is a balanced diet important? And our last learning cycle is called How can I make healthy choices? Let's make a start on our first learning cycle, What are nutrients? Food is an important fuel for our body.
Aisha tells us that "Eating the right sorts of foods can give our body the energy that it needs to be active." Alex says, "Choosing what we eat carefully can also help our body to develop properly." Different foods contain different nutrients.
Lucas reminds us that nutrients are substances that are found in food and we need nutrients to help us to live and grow.
Let's do a check for understanding to see how you're doing so far.
Is the statement true or false? We need nutrients from the food we eat to be able to live and grow.
What do you think? Is this true or false? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that this is true.
It is true that we need nutrients from the food that we eat to be able to live and grow.
Well done if you got this right.
There are seven different nutrients that our body needs: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water.
Each of these seven nutrients plays a different role within the body.
Izzy wants to know if you knew that some nutrients can help our immune system to fight off illnesses.
Let's do another check for understanding.
Which of the following are nutrients needed by our bodies? Is it A: protein, B: caffeine, or C: fibre? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said the A and C are correct.
Protein and fibre are examples of some of the nutrients needed by our body to live and grow.
Well done if you got this right.
Let's move on to your first practise task.
I'd like you to complete the missing words in the paragraph below.
I'm going to read the paragraph to you and I'd like you to spot which words should go in the gaps.
Food is an important something for our body.
Eating the right foods can give our body the something to be active and help us to fight off something.
There are something nutrients that our body needs and these are found in something foods.
The missing words are at the bottom of the screen: seven, different, illnesses, energy, and fuel.
Can you reread the paragraph and see if you can put the missing words into the right place? Pause the video and we'll go through the completed paragraph in a few minutes.
Okay, let's see what your completed paragraph should look like.
Your completed paragraph should say: Food is an important fuel for our body.
Eating the right foods can give our body the energy to be active and help us to fight off illnesses.
There are seven nutrients that our body needs and these are found in different foods.
Well done if you put the missing words in the correct place in the paragraph.
We're now moving on to our second learning cycle: Why is a balanced diet important? One type of food cannot give us all the nutrients that we need, which is why a balanced diet is so important Andeep says that "A balanced diet means eating different food groups in the right amounts, so that our body gets all the essential nutrients that it needs." To help us to get the balance right, we can use what we call the eatwell plate as a guide.
This is what the eatwell plate looks like.
The eatwell plate shows us the different food groups and the amounts of each food group that we need to have in order to have a balanced diet.
Different nutrients are provided by a number of different food groups, and we can see on the eatwell plate all the different food groups.
We have fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, protein, milk and dairy, and high fat and sugar foods.
Let's do a check for understanding.
Is the statement true or false? One type of food can give us all the nutrients that we need.
Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that this is false.
But why? You might have said that one type of food cannot give us all the nutrients that we need, which is why a balanced diet is so important.
Well done if you said this or something similar.
Fruits and vegetables are a source of vitamins, minerals, and fibre, which all help the body to stay healthy.
We should aim to have five portions of fruits and vegetables every day.
Can you spot the different fruits and vegetables in the photo? Which are your favourites? Starchy foods are a source of carbohydrates which give us energy.
Starchy foods such as pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes should be part of every meal.
This helps us to have a balanced diet.
Meat, fish, eggs and pulses are a source of protein and this helps the body to build and repair muscle.
We should try to eat some form of protein every day.
Laura tells us that "Pulses, nuts and seeds are a good source of protein for people who choose not to eat meat." Let's do another check for understanding.
This time I'd like you to decide what are the main nutrients found in the following foods? Picture A shows some chicken.
Picture B shows some pasta, and Picture C shows fruits and vegetables.
Can you decide what the main nutrients are in each of these foods? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
Okay, let's see what the correct answers were for this question.
The chicken is a source of protein, the pasta is a source of carbohydrates, and the fruits and vegetables are a source of vitamins, minerals and fibre.
Well done if you got the correct answers for this question.
Milk and dairy are sources of protein and vitamins.
They also contain calcium and this helps to strengthen our bones and our teeth.
We should aim to have some dairy every day.
And Laura says, "There are many alternatives with added nutrients for those who cannot eat or drink dairy." Vitamin D is a vitamin that's particularly good for strengthening our bones.
It can be found in oily fish like salmon, red meat, and mushrooms. Eating too much fat and sugar can increase the risk of health problems, so we should try to eat mostly from the other healthier food groups.
It's okay to enjoy some high fat and sugary foods from time to time, but we should aim to make some healthier swaps when we can.
What do you think about what Lucas says? Lucas says, "If we want to be healthy, we can never eat high fat or sugary foods." What do you think? Do you agree, disagree? Maybe you're somewhere in the middle or you're not sure.
Tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
What do you think about what Lucas says? Okay.
Let's have a look and see if Lucas is correct.
Lucas is incorrect.
We can still be healthy if we eat high fats and sugary foods occasionally and in small amounts, if the rest of our diet is balanced and healthy.
Well done if you said something similar.
Let's do another check for understanding.
This time, I'd like you to finish the sentence.
Foods that are high in fat or sugar can be eaten.
always, sometimes, or never.
What do you think? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that B sometimes is correct.
Foods that are high in fat or sugar can be eaten sometimes.
Why? You might have said that foods that are high in fat or sugar can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet, but in small amounts and occasionally.
Well done if you got the same answer.
This shows that you've really been paying attention in this learning cycle.
You're doing a fantastic job so far, so keep it up.
Let's move on to your second practise task.
For the first part of this task, I'd like you to label the eatwell plate with the correct food groups.
On the screen you can see the different food groups, protein, high fat and sugar foods, fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, and milk and dairy.
Can you decide where these food group labels should go on the eatwell plate? Pause the video and we'll go through the answer in a few minutes.
Okay, let's see what your labelled eatwell plate should look like.
You should have fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, protein, milk and dairy, and high fat and sugar foods.
Well done if your eatwell plate looks just like the one on the screen.
We're now moving on to the second part of this practise task.
I'd like you to answer Izzy's question below.
I'd like you to try to use the terms nutrients and balanced diet in your answer.
Izzy wants to ask you a question.
She asks, "What does the eatwell plate help us to do? In your answer, can you use the terms nutrients and balanced diet in your answer? Pause the video and we'll go through what you might have said in a few minutes.
Okay, let's see what you might have said.
Your answer might include that the eatwell plate helps us to eat a balanced diet so that we get the right amount of different food groups.
This helps us to get all the nutrients that our body needs to live and grow.
Well done if you said this or something similar.
We are now going to move on to our final learning cycle.
By the end of this learning cycle, you'll be able to answer the question, How can I make healthy choices? Choosing what we eat and drink carefully can help our body to get what it needs in order to be fit and strong.
Aisha says that "By making a few healthy swaps, we can make sure that our body gets more of what it needs and less of what it doesn't." We can swap out high sugar breakfast cereal for low sugar alternatives, and we can add some fruit too for an even healthier option.
Here we've got a bowl of corn flakes.
We could swap this for a bowl of yoghourt with some oats or muesli with some fruit.
This could be a healthier alternative.
We can also swap out some biscuits, crisps, or cakes for a healthier snack like plain popcorn, rice cakes or a fruit teacake.
Here we've got a picture of some crisps.
We could make a healthier swap by instead choosing to have some plain popcorn.
We could also add some colourful vegetables to our meals in order to gain a range of nutrients.
Instead of just having perhaps some chicken nuggets and some chips, we could add some salad to make sure that this is a healthier, more balanced meal.
Let's do another check for understanding to see how you're doing with this learning cycle.
I'd like you to decide which of these is the healthiest snack? Is it A: chocolate chip biscuits, B: cheese and onion crisps, or C: low sugar cereal and fruit? Which out of these do you think is the healthiest snack? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that the healthiest snack in these options was low sugar cereal and fruit.
Well done if you got this right.
We also need to make sure that we're eating enough food to stay healthy.
It's important to make healthy food choices when we feel hungry.
We need to make sure that we eat three meals a day to make sure that we're eating enough to grow strong and healthy.
Trusted adults can help us to make healthy food choices.
They can help us to try new healthy foods, to make healthy food swaps, to eat from a variety of food groups like those in the eatwell plate to make sure that we're eating enough protein and calcium.
Izzy says that "It's important to talk to a trusted adult if you have any worries about making healthy food choices." Let's do another check for understanding.
I'd like you to change one word to make the sentence correct.
Trusted adults can help us to have an unhealthy balanced diet.
What do you think? Which word should be changed to make the sentence correct? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that the word that should change is unhealthy.
Instead, our sentence should now say: "Trusted adults can help us to have a healthy, balanced diet." Well done if you got this right.
We are now moving on to our final practise task and you've done a brilliant job so far, so well done.
Keep it up.
For this task, I'd like you to suggest three additions to this meal to make it a healthier choice for Andeep.
At the moment, Andeep says, "I'm going to eat some fish fingers for dinner." Can you add three things to this meal to make it a healthier choice for Andeep? Pause the video and we'll go through what you might have said in a few minutes.
Okay, let's see what you might have said.
You might have said that Andeep could add some fruits or vegetables to his meal.
He could add some dairy so that he has some calcium and he could add a healthy starchy food.
Well done if you had this or something similar.
We are now going to summarise the key learning that we've done in today's lesson.
In today's lesson, we've learned that nutrients are important for having good health and for us to develop and grow.
We've learned that different foods contain a variety of nutrients which help us to stay healthy.
A healthy diet should include food from each food group in varying quantities.
We should make sure to eat plenty of foods containing calcium or vitamin D, such as milk or milk alternatives, and oily fish, as these are good for our bone health.
And we should aim to eat plenty of protein-rich foods as these are good for building and repairing muscles.
In today's lesson, you might have found that you have some questions or some worries.
It's really important that you share any questions or worries with a trusted adult.
There are also some resources on the screen who are there to help you too.
Well done for your fantastic hard work in today's lesson.
I'm so proud of you and I hope to see you in another lesson soon.
