Hello, everybody.

It's Mrs. Franzsen here.

Welcome to Computing.

It's really great to have you in my lesson today.

We are going to be looking at some digital writing together.

Are you ready? Then let's get started.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to compare writing on computer and writing on paper, and explain which one you prefer to use.

Let's go through our keywords for today.

We are going to use my turn and your turn for this.

That means that I'm going to say the keyword, then I want you to say the keyword.

Then I want you to listen carefully while I explain the definition of the keyword.

Okay, here we go.

First word, my turn.

Improve.

Your turn.

That's great.

To improve something is to make something better.

Next word, my turn.

Edit.

Your turn.

That's great.

When we edit, we make changes to something.

Next word, my turn.

Compare.

Your turn.

That's great.

To compare is to find what is the same and what is different between two things.

Next word, my turn.

Computer.

Your turn.

A computer is a machine that can follow a programme.

In the first part of this lesson, we will be learning how to make changes to improve text.

You can improve your writing by editing.

Sofia says, "Editing means to look at what you've written and fix mistakes." Andeep says, "Improve means to make choices so that your work is even better." Jacob says, "Whenever we write, we should always edit and improve our work." On a computer, there are some special ways to edit writing using a word processor.

You can edit using the undo and redo arrows, and they are there.

I've highlighted them for you on the toolbar with the purple box.

So when we make the bigger here, we can see we've got undo and redo.

Undo goes back by one action.

Redo goes forward if you have used undo.

Let's do a check here.

True or false? The backspace key can fix mistakes.

Pause the video here to think about your answer.

Good thinking on that question.

True or false? The backspace key can fix mistakes.

The answer is true.

Why? The answer is true because the backspace key, undo, and redo are all ways of fixing mistakes on the computer.

Well done if you got that one right.

Look at the sentence below.

How can we improve this sentence? So in my box we've got a sentence.

I'm gonna read it for us.

It says, "teddy has brown fur and big ears." I bet some of you have seen already some parts of this sentence that you could improve.

Here are some editing tools that you could use.

Bold, cursor, underline spacebar, undo, double-click, backspace key, style, and font.

So there are lots of different ways of changing the sentence to improve it.

Remember that improve is one of our keywords, and so is edit.

You could move the cursor and then use the backspace key to remove the small letter from the start of the sentence and add a capital letter in there instead.

So I did that at the start and changed the small t to the capital T using my cursor, backspace key, and then I used the Shift to make the capital letter.

You could move the cursor and then use the spacebar to add a space.

And you can see me doing that in the animation.

You could select some text and use a style to add emphasis, like using bold or italic.

So I'm going to use bold in the animation to make the words stand out, and italics to emphasise those words.

Let's do a check here.

What does the Enter key do? Does it A, remove text, B, move the cursor onto a new line, or C, turn a letter into a capital letter? Pause the video now to think about this question.

Welcome back.

Well done for working on that question.

What does the Enter key do? The answer is B.

It moves the cursor to a new line.

Well done if you got that one right.

We're gonna do a task now.

Look at the sentence below.

How can we edit this sentence? For this task, you need to download Task A.

Fix the mistakes and make improvements.

So just like before, we are going to be editing the sentence and making improvements.

The sentence is in the box.

I'm going to read it for us.

It says, "on saturday we will go tto thebeach." Here are some editing tools you could use.

Bold, cursor, underline, spacebar, undo, double-click, backspace key, style, and font.

Now, you might not use all of those tools, you might use some of them, or you might use all of them.

It's up to you.

You are looking at the text and deciding what needs to be changed and what needs to be improved.

Off you go to work on this task.

You can pause the video here, and I'll be here when you get back.

Welcome back.

Well done for working so hard on that task.

I saw lots of people being editors.

They were changing their sentence and making improvements to it.

Well done.

Watch the video to review fixing mistakes and making improvements.

The instructions for this task say, "Look at the sentence below.

How can we edit this sentence? Fix the mistakes and make improvements." Okay, our sentence reads, "on Saturday, we will go tto thebeach." So I'm noticing some spelling mistakes here, some typing mistakes.

Let's go through from the beginning and see what we can fix.

So what needs to happen here at the beginning of the sentence? It's missing something.

It's missing a capital letter, so I'm gonna click here to move the cursor.

I'm gonna do Backspace, and then I'm going to do a Shift, I'm gonna hold it down to make a capital letter O.

So that O now is correct for the "On saturday." Saturday needs something, too.

Saturday is a name, so it also needs a capital letter.

So I'm gonna backspace the small s, hold down the Shift, and make a capital S.

So "On Saturday" is looking good.

"On Saturday we will go tto," the spelling of to is not quite right here.

I think there's been a typing mistake, because two should be T-O.

So I'm going to take that one away.

That looks better.

And then thebeach doesn't look correct.

There's something about thebeach.

I wonder if you can see it.

Yes, there should be a space here after the word the.

Right there where the cursor is.

So I'm gonna do spacebar to put a space in, and then at the end of the sentence, what comes at the end? A full stop.

So the full stop on the keyboard is there.

So let's read the sentence again.

"On Saturday we will go to the beach." There we go.

If I wanted to use some formatting to even improve the sentence, I could decide that I want to bold or underline some of the words to add emphasis to make them look special or stand out.

So I think the beach would be the most exciting thing in this sentence.

So I'm gonna click and drag over beach so that it's selected.

And then I'm gonna go up to B for bold at the top and I'm going to make beach bold so that it emphasises that word.

There we go.

My sentence has been edited and improved.

In the next part of the lesson, we are going to be comparing writing methods.

I want you to think back to the last time that you wrote on paper.

Maybe it was today.

Can you think about the last thing that you wrote on paper? We can write on paper.

We can also write using computers.

There are some similarities and some differences.

In the photograph, we see someone writing on paper with a pencil, and then in the screenshot, you can see my word processor and a book review.

I have typed a book review in my word processor using my computer.

When we write and edit on paper, we use tools like pencils to write.

We use rubbers to edit writing.

We would use a ruler to underline words.

Maybe you've done these things.

When we write and edit on a computer, it's a little bit different.

We use a word processor to write.

We edit with undo, redo, and backspace, and we can use formatting tools to change our text.

I wonder if you can see sometimes I've changed the text using my formatting tools in the screenshot of the word processor.

We can compare the different methods that we use to write.

Remember, that word compare is one of our keywords, and comparing means looking at two things and noticing what is different and what is similar.

We have a table here where we have organised our thoughts about the different methods.

So on the paper side it says we use tools like pencils to write, we use rubbers to edit the writing, and we can use a ruler to underline words.

On the computer side it says that we use a word processor to write, we edit with undo, redo, and backspace, and we can use formatting tools to change the text.

Let's do a check here.

True or false? On a computer, you would use a ruler to underline text.

Pause the video here and think about your answer.

Welcome back.

Good thinking about that answer.

True or false? On a computer, you would use a ruler to underline text.

The answer was false.

Why? The answer was false, because on a computer, you would use the underline tool to underline text, and the underline tool is here.

The symbol that we use for underline is a capital U with a line underneath it.

That means underline.

People may prefer to use a computer or paper to write.

They may enjoy both.

Laura says, "I like writing stories on paper because using pencils is fun." Sofia says, "I prefer writing on the computer because it's easy to fix mistakes with backspace." What do you prefer, and why? Do you prefer computer or paper to write? Pause the video here to think about that question.

And if you've got someone near you, maybe you want to share your thoughts with someone else.

Welcome back.

I heard people discussing if they liked paper or preferred computers to do writing.

And I heard some people say that they like both as well.

Let's do a check here.

True or false? Computers are always better than paper.

Pause the video here to think about your answer.

The answer was false.

Why? The answer was false because Both computer and paper are better for different purposes.

Well done if you got that one right.

Andeep says, "On a computer, it's easy to edit a mistake using backspace or undo." Jacob says, "How do you fix a mistake on paper?" Hmm.

What ways can you think of? Pause the video to think about this question.

How do you fix a mistake on paper? It is more difficult to fix a mistake made on paper.

You could get a new page.

If you are using a pencil, you could use an eraser or a rubber.

You could cross out the mistake, or you could leave the mistake in.

It's time for the first part of our task now.

With a partner, compare writing on a computer to writing on paper.

Talk about which way you prefer and why.

Use these words to help you.

Word processor, edit, select, prefer, undo, improve, backspace, style, and font.

Off you go to work on this part of the task, and I'll be here when you get back.

Welcome back.

Well done for sharing your thoughts about using a computer or using paper.

Let's look at some examples.

Jacob said, "When I use a computer to write, I can edit parts of my text to make it stand out.

I prefer writing stories on the computer." Thank you, Jacob.

And Laura says, "I still find it tricky to find keys quickly on the keyboard when I type on the computer.

I prefer writing on paper." Thank you, Laura.

Well done for everyone for your hard work on that part of the task.

For the second part of the task, you need to download Task B.

Then, you need to read the text.

I'm going to read the text for us here.

The title reads, "Comparing writing on paper and on the computer." "When I edit on paper, I use an eraser to fix mistakes.

When I edit on a computer, I can use undo and backspace.

On paper, I can draw next to my story.

On a computer, I can use the toolbar to change how my text looks.

I prefer using paper to write.

I prefer using a computer to write." So for this part of the task, the instructions say underline the title and change the font.

Change the word computer to bold every time you see it.

Change the word paper to italic every time you see it.

I want you to go and work on that part of the task and then come back so we can look at the example together.

Pause the video now to work on this part of the task.

Welcome back.

Well done for all of your hard work.

Watch this video clip to look at part two of the task.

The instructions for this task say, "Read the text.

Underline the title and change the font.

Change the word computer to bold.

Change the word paper to italic." Let's do this part of the task first.

So the first part we come across is the title here, "Comparing writing on paper and on the computer." Now, our first instruction was to underline the title.

So we're gonna highlight it, clicking and dragging to select the sentence.

And then we're going to use the Underline formatting tool.

The next part says that we need to change the font.

So we're going to go to the Font menu here, click on the down arrow, and scroll to select a font for the title.

I think this one looks like a title font.

I'm gonna select it by clicking on it.

There we go.

Let's read the rest of the text, looking for the words computer to bold and paper to change into italic.

Here we go.

First sentence.

"When I edit on paper, I use an eraser to fix mistakes." I saw the word paper there.

I'm gonna click and drag, select it, and change it to italic.

Next sentence.

"When I edit on a computer, I use undo and backspace." There's the word computer.

I'm going to bold it.

"On paper, I can draw next to my story." Select paper with the mouse here, and use italic.

"On a computer, I can use the toolbar to change how my text looks." There's the word computer.

I'm going to bold it.

"I prefer using paper to write." Highlight paper, and use italic.

And in the last sentence here, "I prefer using a computer to write." And I highlight the word computer.

Make it bold.

For the third part of the task, I would like you to edit the text.

Use backspace to change or delete sentences that you don't agree with.

So in our task today, you will see some sentences talking about what you prefer, and I want you to take the sentences out that you don't agree with.

Do you think that you will have the exact same opinions as anyone else on this task? No.

So you might be editing things that someone else will not be editing, and that is fine.

Off you go to work on this part of the task.

You can pause the video here, and I'll be here when you get back.

Well done.

Good work on working on editing the text.

You can watch the video here to review the feedback for editing the text.

The next part of this task says, "Edit the text.

Use backspace to change or delete sentences that you don't agree with." So let's go down to the text here.

This text is all about comparing writing paper and on the computer.

So we are going to look at the sentences.

There are three sentences about writing on paper and three sentences about writing on a computer.

I'm going to remove the one that says, "I prefer using paper to write." You might not want to remove this one.

You might agree with that.

Then you might want to remove the next sentence at the bottom that says, "I prefer using a computer to write," instead.

So I'm gonna click at the end of the sentence and then I'm going to use backspace to remove the sentence.

You might want to make some other editing changes as well.

There might be some words in this that you wanted to edit or change, and that's fine.

For the final part of this task, part four, I want you to improve the text, change the colour and style of important words.

So the words that you think are important, I would like you to change the colour and change the style.

Okay? Make sure your choices are appropriate.

So that means that you need to be making choices that match your own ideas.

So your task might look quite different to someone else's, and that is okay.

Off you go to work on that part of the task.

And I'll be here when you get back to look at an example.

Well done for all of your hard work on that part of the task.

That was a long task, so excellent work everybody.

Well done.

You can watch the video clip here to look at how I improved the text.

The next part of this task reads, "Improve the text.

Change the colour and style of important words." So I'm going to look through my text for any important words.

I think the word mistakes is important, so I'm going to highlight it, and I'm gonna change the colour of it by using the Text colour menu here.

I'm going to change it to a different colour.

And I think the word story is important, so I'm gonna highlight it, and maybe I'll change the font.

I'm going to change it to a different font to highlight the word story.

It's looking a bit small now, because of that font style, so I'm gonna change the size here.

I'm going to increase the font size so it's a bit more equal and matches the rest of my sentence.

And another word that I think is quite important is the word write, because that is what we are doing in computers.

We are writing on them.

I'm going to change the colour of the word write, I'm gonna choose a nice blue here.

Just like that.

I've changed the colour and the style of important words in my text.

Well done for all of your hard work during this lesson.

We have learned so much today.

Let's go through what we have learned.

You can write using both computers and paper.

It is more difficult to fix a mistake on paper.

When you make a mistake on a computer, you can use the undo and redo tools or the backspace key to go back and fix the mistake.

You can use formatting tools to edit and improve your text.

People may prefer to use a computer or paper to write.

Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.

I hope you enjoyed learning about digital writing with me, and I hope to see you again soon.
