Hello everybody.
Welcome to computing.
My name is Mrs. Franssen and it's really good to see you here.
Thank you for joining me in my lesson today.
We are going to be learning all about digital writing.
Are you ready? Then let's get started.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to change the style of text in a word processor.
Let's go through our keywords for today.
We are going to do my turn, your turn for this.
That means that I'm going to say the keyword first.
Then I want you to say the keyword nice and loud so I can hear you.
Then I want you to listen carefully to the definition while I explain the keyword.
Okay.
So here we go.
First word.
My turn.
Toolbar.
Your turn.
That's great.
The toolbar is the menu you can make choices from.
Next word.
My turn.
Formatting.
Your turn.
That's great.
Formatting is adding special effects to text to make it stand out.
Next word.
My turn.
Select.
Your turn.
That's great.
Selecting shows the word processor which text you want to change.
Next word.
My turn.
Font.
Your turn.
Well done.
Font is the way that letters look.
In the first part of the lesson, we will be changing the formatting of text.
How can we change the way text looks on the computer? Here we've got a screenshot of a word processor.
There are a lot of choices here.
I wonder if you know the answer to my question.
Formatting is one of the ways that we can change the look of text.
Formatting is one of our keywords.
Formatting means adding special effects to text to make it stand out.
This is the toolbar.
The toolbar is another one of our keywords.
I've highlighted the toolbar for you in purple on my screenshot.
The toolbar is one of the ways that you can change the formatting of text.
Let's do a check here.
True or false.
The toolbar is how you change the formatting of text.
Pause the video here to think about your answer.
The answer is true.
Why? The answer is true because the toolbar in a word processor is where you find the tools or buttons to change how the text looks.
Well done if you got that one right.
There are many different formatting choices.
What could these buttons do? I've highlighted three buttons for you here in the purple.
We've got one that looks like a capital B.
We've got one that looks a bit like a capital I, and we've got one that looks like a capital U.
There they are nice and big.
Can you see my three buttons? What could these buttons do? You can pause the video here to have a think about that.
That was good thinking.
Let's look at these buttons in a bit more detail.
This is the bold button.
Bold makes your letters look dark and thick.
In my sentence I have used bold.
My sentence reads, I live in England.
Can you see how England is a bit darker and thicker than the other words? I used bold on the word England.
Italic makes your letters lean to the side.
This is the italic button.
In my sentence can you see that the word England is leaning to the side a bit? So I have used italic on the word England here.
Underline puts a line under your letters.
Can you see how the word England has got an underline? That's because I used the underline tool on the word England.
Let's do a check here.
Which formatting makes your letters look dark and thick? Is it A, bold, B, italic or C, underline? Pause the video here to think about your answer.
That was good thinking.
Which formatting makes your letters look dark and thick? The answer was A, bold.
Good job if you got that right.
Before you can change the formatting of text, you first need to select it.
Select was one of our keywords.
One way to select is to drag over the word.
When text is selected the background colour changes.
So in my animation here you can see that I am selecting the word Sam and the background colour behind the word Sam changes when I do that.
There we go.
You can also select a word by clicking or tapping twice on your mouse or touch screen.
This is called double click or double tap.
In this animation I am double clicking on the word Sam.
We are going to do a task now.
Our first task is all about using formatting.
For this task I would like you to download task A.
I want you to change the formatting of the sentences using bold, italic and underline.
Make sure you use each formatting once.
Here are the three sentences.
I am going to read them for you.
It says Ted has lost his toy.
Ted's toy is a teddy bear.
The teddy bear is brown.
So I want you to make sure you change the formatting of each sentence using each formatting once.
Off you go and work on that task and I'll be here when you get back to have a look at the answer.
Welcome back.
Well done for all of your hard work on that task.
Let's look at the answer together.
So in the box I've got my three sentences.
I made the first one bold.
I made the second one underlined.
And I made the third one italic.
You could have used your formatting in a different order to me.
That's also fine.
The next part of the lesson is about selecting different fonts.
You can change how text looks by using different fonts.
Fonts is one of our keywords.
Fonts are how letters and numbers appear.
So you can see, I've got the word teddy here twice.
But each time, the text looks a bit different.
If you look at the capital T on teddy, the shape of the letter looks a bit different on each one.
That is because I used a different font.
You can choose a font to make your text look different.
I've got two more teddies here, but can you see how they look different? It's because I used different fonts.
To change the font, first select the word.
Then on the toolbar, click on the font menu and choose the one that you like.
That's how we change the font.
Let's do a check now.
What does changing the font do? Is it A, it changes how the text looks? Is it B, it makes the text a different colour? Or C, it underlines a word? Pause the video here to think about your answer.
Good work thinking about that question, what does changing the font do? The answer is A.
It changes how the text looks.
Well done if you got that right.
Watch this video to see how to change the font style.
So I'm going to click and drag to select it all the way across.
We can tell it's selected because the background has changed colour.
And then on my word processor up at the top choices here, if I put my mouse over it, it says font.
So this is my font menu.
And to open it, I can use the down arrow here.
You can see the font menu is quite big.
There are lots of choices and sometimes you might need to use the scroll to pull the menu up and down to have a look at all of the choices here.
And when I click on it, it will change the font of the sentence.
There, just like that.
Now if you change your mind and you decide you want a different font, you can use the font menu to select a different font.
So you need to make sure your sentence is still highlighted.
You might have clicked away.
If it's not highlighted, you need to first highlight your sentence.
So click and drag over the sentence again, go up to the font menu and then make your new selection.
Let's look at this one here.
There we go.
That is how you change your font style.
Let's do a check here.
True or false? Once you have selected the font, you can change your mind and choose another font.
Pause the video here to think about your answer.
Well done for thinking about that question.
Once you have selected the font, you can change your mind and choose another font.
The answer is true.
Why? If you have selected a font style, you can use the font menu to change to another font style.
Well done if you got that one right.
Okay, we're going to do another task now.
For this task, you need to download task B.
Change the style of these sentences by changing the font.
Each sentence must have a different font style.
We have one, two, three, four, five sentences here.
And I want you to change the font on each one so that each sentence looks different.
You can go and pause the video now to work on that task.
And I'll be here when you get back and we can go through the answer together.
Welcome back.
Well done for all of your effort on that task.
I saw people working really hard.
Watch the video here to review changing the font style of sentences.
The instructions for this task say, change the style of these sentences by changing the font.
Each sentence must have a different font style.
So let's look at the first sentence up here.
We've got I love my cat.
So to change the sentence we need to first select it.
So I'm going to click and drag with my mouse over the sentence.
You can see the background of the sentence has changed to show that it's selected.
Then to change the font, it looks different on different word processors.
But up here on my word processor, if I mouse over this area here, it shows me the label font.
And if I click on this baby triangle, this down arrow on the menu, it opens up the font menu.
I can scroll up and down to choose my fonts.
And remember that each sentence has to have a different font.
So I'm going to choose this one for the first sentence.
There we go.
Let's look at the next sentence.
It says Andy rides his bike.
So let's select that.
Click and drag over the sentence.
Go up to the font menu and scroll down to choose a new font.
Well, that's a fancy one.
Next sentence.
Dad makes lunch.
Click and drag.
Go to the font menu.
And scroll to pick the one that you like the look of.
That one looks good.
Sentence four says I walk to school.
Select it.
Choose a new font.
That one.
And the last one, Sophia runs fast.
Select the font.
Go to the menu.
And choose a new font.
So now each sentence has got a different font style.
You worked really hard on your lesson today.
Excellent effort.
I'm going to read a summary here of our learning.
To select text, double click on it or drag the cursor over it.
You have to select text before you can change the look of text.
The formatting of text can be changed using bold, italic and underline.
Bold makes your letters look dark and thick.
Italic makes your letters lean to the side.
Underline puts a line under your letters.
You can change the font from the font menu in the toolbar.
Different fonts can be used to change how the text looks.
Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.
I hope you had as much fun as I did, and I hope to see you again soon.
