Hello.

My name's Ms. Shaw.

I am so excited to be learning with you today.

I will be helping you with your geography lesson.

We're going to have such a great time learning together in this lesson.

Let's start our learning journey.

Welcome to today's lesson from the unit, The UK: what kind of place is it? This lesson is called geographical features in England, and you will be learning to locate and name some of the England's geographical features using atlases, maps, photographs, and Google Earth.

Some of the learning is brand new, but I'm here to help you.

We are building on our previous learning of geographical features of Scotland.

We know that there are many beautiful physical features in Scotland.

I'm very excited to get started.

I hope you are too.

The keywords we will be using today are town, mountain, coastline, moorland.

Let's do my turn, your turn.

Town, town.

Mountain, mountain.

Coastline, coastline.

Moorland, moorland.

A town is a settlement that is usually larger than a village but smaller than a city.

A mountain is a natural raised part of the Earth's surface that is higher than a hill.

A coastline is the boundary between the land and the sea or ocean.

Moorland is found in hilly areas and has poor soils and few trees.

I'm excited to hear you using our keywords together in this lesson.

Every time you and your partner uses a keyword, I want you to give yourself a thumbs up like this.

These are the learning cycles we will be working through together in today's lesson.

First, we will be looking at where do people live in England? Then we'll be learning about what physical features are in England.

Are you ready to get started? Amazing, let's start.

In the last lesson, we learnt lots of new information about Scotland and today you will be gaining even more knowledge about England.

England is located in the United Kingdom.

On the map, you can see that England is in the colour green.

It is located in the southern part of the United Kingdom.

England is the largest country in the United Kingdom.

Can you remember from last lesson what was the second largest country in the United Kingdom? Pause the video here and discuss with your partner or teacher.

What is the second largest country in the United Kingdom? Yes, that's right.

The second largest country in the United Kingdom is Scotland.

There are around 55 million people living in England.

How many people living in England? My turn, your turn.

55 million.

Your turn, 55 million.

Like in the first lesson, we looked at Scotland's mountainous regions.

Do you remember what the word mountainous means? A mountainous area means a place that has many mountains.

In the first lesson, we looked at the key showing the height of the land.

This key ranks which areas have high height of land compared to low height of land.

The flatter areas are in green and yellow, and the mountainous areas are in orange and brown.

England is more mountainous in the north and west and flatter in the south and east.

So by the east coast of England and the south coast of England, there will be flatter land, whereas there is more mountains and hills in the north and west of England.

Here is a picture of a rural area.

Like Scotland, England has lots of rural areas.

Can you remember what a rural area is? Pause the video here, and tell your partner or teacher what is a rural area.

Well done if you said a rural areas are places located away from towns and cities.

Rural areas are referred to as the countryside, which have less buildings and people in these areas.

Rural areas still have shops, schools, and houses.

90% of England is made up of the countryside.

The other 10% of land is not countryside.

Let's check your learning so far by answering this question together.

What is the largest country in the United Kingdom? Is it A, Scotland; B, England; C, Wales; or D, Northern Ireland? Pause the video here, and have a go at answering this question.

That's right, the largest country in the United Kingdom is England.

Do you remember how many people live in England? That's right, there are 55 million people living in England.

Many people in England live in cities, villages, and towns.

A city is a place where many people live close together.

They are the largest kind of settlements, and often have millions of people living in them.

We learnt lots of information about cities in our earlier lesson.

Many people in England also live in villages.

Normally around a couple thousand people live in towns.

Towns have homes, shops, leisure facilities, such as swimming pools and places where you can exercise.

Towns will often have a place called a town hall, where events will be held.

Towns are larger settlements than villages.

A village is a small settlement that can have between 100 to around 3,000 people.

Villages will still have lots of houses, but less than a town.

I bet you remember a lot of learning from our earlier lessons.

Do you live in a city, a village, or a town? Pause the video here, and discuss with your partner or teacher.

Do you live in a city, village, or town? Well done.

I'm sure you were having wonderful discussions about where you live.

A city is a place where many people live and work close together.

In this image, you can see an aerial photograph of London.

When you are thinking like a geographer, geographers often use aerial photographs to study different areas.

This is an aerial photograph.

What is this an aerial photograph of? My turn, London.

Your turn, London.

A city is bigger than a town or a village.

Cities usually have a large population.

What is the biggest type of settlement, a city, village, or a town? Pause the video here, and discuss with your partner or teacher.

What is the biggest type of settlement, a city, a village, or a town? Well done.

Did you say a city is the biggest type of settlement? You're working hard today.

A town is an urban settlement that is usually bigger than a village.

Less people will live in a town than a city.

In the pictures below, you can see towns in two different areas of England.

The picture on the left is showing a town with a place of worship.

Then the picture on the right is a town with more of an urban area.

This is a high street in a town with lots of different types of shops, restaurants, and even a library.

A village is a settlement with a small number of houses for a few hundred people.

Villages are the smallest settlement out of cities and towns.

There could be up to a few thousand people, but they're quite small.

They might just have one shop, and there might not be a lot of products available.

They might have one place of worship and maybe a doctor's practise.

They leave these places to go to much, much bigger settlements, where there are other things available.

People sometimes want a quieter life, so they will move to a village from a bigger settlement, such as a city.

People might want to have access to the great outdoors, because villages are often in the countryside, and maybe they want nice, fresh air.

Why would people like to live in a village? Pause the video here, and discuss with your partner or teacher.

Why would people like to live in a village? Did you say that people would prefer to live in villages because they want nice, fresh air and a quieter life? Well done if you did.

There are other reasons that people might want to come to a village too.

Most people in England live in cities.

Cities are less mountainous areas of the country.

We know that the word mountainous means a place where there are lots of mountains, so cities are in places where there are much less mountains.

We spoke about in last lessons why cities tend to be in flatter parts of the country, because it's easier to travel around there and easier to build houses and flats.

You can see on the map below that there are many cities in England.

There are cities such as Leeds, which is located in Northern England, and Brighton, which is located in Southern England.

These are flatter parts of England.

We've learnt what the capital city of England and the UK is.

Pause the video here, and discuss with your teacher or your partner.

What is the capital city of England and the UK? Remember, we've learnt about this learning before.

Well done, if you said London.

London is the capital city of England and of the UK.

London is the biggest city in the UK.

There are around 8 million people who live there.

Wow, that is a lot of people.

It would take 11 days to even count to 1 million, so it would take 88 days for you to count up to 8 million.

And here is London, that is located on the map.

It's time for our first task now.

Here are some sentences with some missing words.

Let's read the sentences below, and you can figure out which words are missing.

In England, many people live in something, something, and cities.

England's cities are mostly found in the something areas.

These are shown in green and something on this map.

Use the word bank below to fill in the missing words in these sentences.

Pause the video here and write down the missing words.

Don't forget to spell the words correctly.

Well done for filling in the missing words in these sentences.

How many of these did you get correct? In England, many people live in villages, towns, and cities.

England's cities are mostly found in the flatter areas.

These are shown in green and yellow on this map.

Now let's move on to our next learning cycle.

In this learning cycle, we'll be learning what physical features are in England.

In our last lesson, we learnt about physical features.

Physical features are natural to our world.

They would exist without humans.

What are examples of physical features? Pause the video here, and discuss with your partner or friend.

What are examples of physical features? Well done if you remembered that physical features include rivers, mountains, lakes, moorland, and coastline.

Here are some images of the different physical features in England.

One type of physical feature in England are mountains.

We remembered from the last lesson that a mountain is a landform that is over 600 metres tall.

The tallest mountain in England is Scafell Pike.

Let's do my turn, your turn.

Scafell Pike.

Your turn, Scafell Pike.

It is 978 metres high.

Scafell Pike is located in the Lake District in the northwest of England.

You can see the darker green areas on the map show you areas of national parks around the UK.

National parks are areas in the countryside which are protected by law.

National parks are protected so that people can enjoy the area.

They also can improve the area and make sure the history, land, and wildlife are being protected.

England also has many hilly areas in the Lake District and other places, such as the Yorkshire Dales.

These are areas of high land, but not as high as mountains.

Many people like to visit the Yorkshire Dales and enjoy walking around and enjoying the fresh air.

The Yorkshire Dales is also a rural area.

Remember that a rural area is an area away from towns and cities and in the countryside.

Let's do another check here to see how much you remembered.

Let's answer this question together.

What is the tallest mountain in England? Is it A, Ben Nevis; B, Mount Everest; or C, Scafell Pike? Pause the video here, and answer this question.

What is the tallest mountain in England? Well done.

Did you say C, Scafell Pike? Scafell Pike is the tallest mountain in England, and it is located in the Lake District.

Remember, Ben Nevis is the tallest mountain in Scotland and the whole of the UK.

Moorland is found in rural hilly areas and has poor soils, few trees, and lots of grass and shrubs.

We know that hilly areas are areas below 600 metres.

Poor soils means that the land is more difficult to grow plants and trees on.

This means there aren't many trees, and there are mainly grass and shrubs.

Shrubs are low plants which grow near to the ground.

You can see on the map that Dartmoor is located in Southern England.

Dartmoor has open moorland and river valleys.

It is a unique place with lots of rare wildlife.

People enjoy walking around Dartmoor National Park to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Like Scotland, England has a large coastline.

It has 11,000 miles of coastline.

It would take you around 143 days to drive around the coastline of England.

That is a very long time.

Let's remind ourself what a coastline is.

A coastline is the boundary between the land and the sea or ocean.

England's coastline has many different types of beaches.

Some beaches are rocky, some are sandy, and some are stony.

Some are rural, and others have nearby seaside towns or cities.

People like to live near the coast, as they enjoy being by the seaside.

People from larger settlements enjoy visiting the seaside too.

Here is a picture of a beach in England.

It is in St Ives, and St Ives is a town in Cornwall.

Cornwall is located in the southern part of England.

It is a very popular place for people to visit, and it is known for its surf beaches, and has a great art scene.

Let's do another check here to see how much you've remembered.

Let's answer this question together.

Which of these are physical features you would find in England? Is it A, coastline; B, castles; or C, moorland? Pause the video here, and answer this question.

Which of these are physical features you would find in England? Remember that there are more than one answer for this question.

Well done.

Did you say A, coastlines and C, moorlands? Remember, castles are an example of a human feature.

A human feature are things that are made by humans, and castles are made by humans.

It's now time for task B, which is your second task in today's lesson.

I would like you to use Google Earth to help you locate the following features and label them on this map.

The features I would like you to locate and find are Scafell Pike, Dartmoor, St Ives, and London.

Google Earth will help you find these features on a map.

Make sure you label your map with capital letters at the beginning because these are all names of places.

Pause the video here, and complete your task.

Well done for finding these features using Google Earth.

Did you locate Scafell Pike, which is the tallest mountain in England, and it is located in the Lake District in Northern England? Did you label Dartmoor, which is a national park in Southern England with lots of unique wildlife and areas full of moorlands? Did you locate St Ives, which is a town which has popular beaches in Cornwall in Southern England? Lots of people enjoy visiting St Ives.

And finally, did you locate London, which is the capital city of England and also the United Kingdom? We've learnt that there are 8 million people living in London.

Let's go through a summary of the learning we've completed together today.

We've learnt that England is mountainous in the north and west and flatter in the south and east.

We've also learnt that most people in the UK live in England.

There are lots of cities, and towns, and villages here.

The countryside in England has smaller towns and villages, farmland, mountains, forest, lakes, and moorland.

And finally, we've learnt that England's coastline has many sandy beaches.

You've been fantastic today.

Give yourself one last thumbs up, and well done for joining me today and sharing your learning with me.

See you next time for some more geography lessons.

Bye!.
