Hello.

My name's Ms. Shaw.

I'm so excited to be learning with you today.

I will be helping you with your geography lesson.

We're going to have such a great time learning together in this lesson.

Let's start our learning journey.

Welcome to today's lesson from the unit "The UK: What kind of place is it?" This lesson is called "Geographical Features in Northern Ireland," and you will be learning to locate and name some of Northern Ireland's geographical features using atlases, maps, photographs, and Google Earth.

Some of the learning is brand new, but I'm here to help you.

I'm very excited to get started.

I hope you are too.

The keywords we'll be using today are mountain, capital city, lough, and coast, and we will be learning about them all throughout this lesson.

Let's do my turn, your turn.

My turn, mountain.

Your turn, mountain.

My turn, capital city.

Your turn, capital city.

My turn, lough.

Your turn, lough.

My turn, coast.

Your turn, coast.

A mountain is a natural raised part of the Earth's surface that is higher than a hill.

A capital city is the place in a country where the government sits and has its centre of power.

A lough is the Irish word for lake, and a coast is the boundary between the land and the sea or ocean.

We've learned some of these keywords before, so you should be brilliant at this now.

I'm excited to hear you using your keywords together today.

Every time you and your partner uses a keyword, I want you to give yourself a thumbs up like this.

These are the learning cycles we'll be working through together in today's lesson.

First, we'll be looking at, where do people live in Northern Ireland? Then we'll be learning about what physical features are in Northern Ireland.

Are you ready to get started? Me too.

Let's start our learning today.

In the last lesson, we learned lots of new information about Wales.

And today, you'll be gaining even more knowledge about Northern Ireland.

Here is a map of the United Kingdom with our four countries.

Can you remember the four countries in the United Kingdom? Pause the video here and tell your partner or teacher what are the four countries in the United Kingdom? Well done if you said Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are all countries in the United Kingdom.

Amazing job.

Northern Ireland is situated here on the map of the UK.

It is the country shown in yellow.

Northern Ireland is one of the four countries in the United Kingdom.

Northern Ireland is the smallest country in the UK.

Remember that England is the biggest country in the UK.

There are around two million people living in Northern Ireland.

The Irish Sea separates Northern Ireland from the other countries in the United Kingdom.

Remember, the Irish Sea is located on the east of Northern Ireland and the Atlantic Ocean is located north of Northern Ireland.

This map shows the United Kingdom, but it also includes Ireland.

Northern Ireland is located north of the island of Ireland in the light green colour.

It shares a land border with the country Ireland.

A border means a line between two places.

It can be real or artificial that separates two areas.

You can see on the map there is a boundary between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Remember in our first lesson, we learned that Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom.

They are known as two separate countries, but they are positioned on the island of Ireland.

Let's have a check here to see how much you've remembered.

Let's answer this question together.

What sea separates Northern Ireland from England and Wales? Is it A, North Sea? B, Irish Sea? Or C, English Channel? Pause the video here and have a go at answering this question.

What sea separates Northern Ireland from England and Wales? Did you say B, Irish Sea? Well done if you did.

The Irish Sea separates Northern Ireland from England and Wales.

Northern Ireland has some mountainous areas.

Remember, mountainous areas are places where there are lots of mountains.

Northern Ireland's mountainous areas are in the north, east, and west of Northern Ireland, and they are flatter in the centre.

We have been using keys to find out areas in the UK which have higher height of land and lower height of land.

You can see on the map that the key is showing the flatter areas in the colour green and yellow.

Remember, the flatter areas in Northern Ireland are in the centre of the country, whereas the mountainous areas are shown in the colour orange and brown.

The mountainous areas are in the north, east, and west of Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland compared to Wales is much less mountainous.

Here's the key on the map showing you the height of the land.

People in Northern Ireland live in small towns and villages, or in the country's six cities.

How many cities in Northern Ireland? My turn, your turn.

Six.

Your turn, six.

There is not a lot of cities compared to England.

England has 55 cities, so people live in Northern Ireland's small towns and villages.

What is a larger settlement? A town or a village? Pause the video here and tell your partner or a teacher what is a larger settlement, a town or a village? Did you say a town is a larger settlement than a village? Well done if you did.

Towns will have more houses, shops, and leisure facilities than villages.

The place with the highest number of people living there is in the capital Belfast.

Here, you can see the capital city Belfast on the map.

It is the city with the red dot on it.

Belfast has a population of 345,418 people.

Remember, the word population means how many people living in one area, so the population of Belfast is 345,418 people.

Let's have a go at practising that tricky number together.

My turn, 345,418.

Your turn, 345,418.

Here, we have two pictures of capital cities.

Do you recognise the capital city on the right-hand side? Pause the video here and tell your partner or teacher what is the capital city on the picture on the right-hand side.

Did you say London is the capital city of the picture on the right-hand side? Did you recognise important landmarks such as The Gherkin and a physical feature of the River Thames? The picture on the left-hand side is a picture of Belfast.

The population of London is 9,648,000.

Well done.

You are doing a great job today.

Which capital city has a bigger population? Do you think Belfast or London? Pause the video here and discuss with your partner or teacher, which capital city has a bigger population? Did you say London has a bigger population? Well done if you did.

Over a third of people in Northern Ireland live in rural towns and villages.

Remember the word rural means areas in the countryside.

Some people might call rural areas the countryside.

Some people who live in Northern Ireland live in seaside villages.

The seaside is an area near the sea.

People spend their holidays and enjoy themselves by the sea.

Here you can see an image of a seaside village in Northern Ireland.

There are houses and buildings located next to the coast.

Remember, the coast is the area where the land meets the water.

Some people live in villages and small towns in the countryside.

Northern Ireland has a lot of farmland, especially in the flatter areas in the centre of the country.

Remember that we learned that farmlands are land used for the growing and harvesting of crops or rearing animals for food or raw materials.

So Northern Ireland has a lot of places where animals live and where people harvest crops.

It's time now for our first task.

Here are some sentences with some words missing.

Let's read the sentences below and you can figure out which words are missing.

Most people in Northern Ireland live in Belfast, the something of Northern Ireland.

Over one third of people live in rural something and villages in the countryside and at the something.

the countryside has a lot of something.

Use the word bank below to fill in the missing words in these sentences.

Pause the video here and write down the missing words.

Don't forget to spell the words correctly.

Well done for filling in the missing words in these sentences.

How many of these did you get correct? Most people in Northern Ireland live in Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland.

Over one third of people live in rural towns and villages in the countryside and at the coast.

The countryside has a lot of farmland.

You are working really hard today.

Well done.

Now let's move on to our next learning cycle.

What physical features are in Northern Ireland? Physical features are natural.

They would exist without any humans.

Physical features like seas, mountains, and rivers are natural.

You can see some physical features in Northern Ireland below.

Here you can see a river, a mountain, and a sea.

Here is a beautiful physical feature.

Pause the video here and tell your partner or teacher what do you think this is a picture of.

Did you say a mountain? Well done if you did.

The highest mountain in Northern Ireland is Slieve Donard.

My turn, your turn.

Slieve Donard.

Your turn, Slieve Donard.

It is located south of Belfast in the Mourne mountains.

Where in Belfast is Slieve Donard located? My turn, your turn.

South.

Your turn, south.

Mourne mountains is the name of the mountain range that Slieve Donard is located in.

The peak of the mountain is 850 metres high.

Remember, the peak of a mountain is the tallest point of the mountain.

We've learned that a mountain has to be over 600 metres tall.

Let's do a little check here to see how much you've remembered.

Let's answer this question together.

Where is Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland? Is it A, North of Belfast? B, Central Belfast? Or C, South of Belfast? Pause the video here and answer the question, where is Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland? Did you say Slieve Donard is located in the South of Belfast? Well done if you did.

In our previous lesson about Scotland, we learned the Scottish word for lake.

Remember, we learned the Scottish word for lake is loch.

The Irish have a word for lake too.

Lough is the Irish word for lake.

My turn, your turn.

Lough.

Your turn, lough.

Northern Ireland has several loughs.

What is the Irish name for a lake? Pause the video here and tell your partner or teacher what is the Irish name for a lake.

Did you say lough? Well done if you did.

You're working really hard today.

You can see here on the map where Northern Ireland's several loughs are located.

Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lake in the United Kingdom.

Freshwater is water that is not salty.

Freshwater is water found in ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, glaciers, icebergs, ice caps, and sheets.

Because the freshwater lake is not salty, it supplies half of Belfast's drinking water and around 40% of Northern Ireland's water overall.

Lough Neagh is located west of Belfast.

What is the name of the largest freshwater lake in the United Kingdom? My turn, your turn.

Lough Neagh.

Your turn, Lough Neagh.

Here, it's located on the map.

Northern Ireland has many stretches of beautiful coastline.

Remember that coastline is the boundary between the land and the sea or ocean.

Around 70% of Northern Ireland's coastline are areas of outstanding beauty.

Areas of outstanding beauty are the UK's places of the finest landscapes and there are laws to protect those places.

The Giant's Causeway is one of Northern Ireland's coastal features.

It's located in the north of Northern Ireland.

It is made up of 40,000 natural stone pillars and is located on the north coast.

These stones are hexagonal-shaped stepping stones.

A hexagon is a shape with six sides.

Lots of these stones date back to almost 60 million years ago.

That's a very long time.

These large rocks could be imagined as stepping stones for giants.

That's how they got their name, Giant's Causeway.

People enjoy visiting the Giant's Causeway because it's a very unusual site.

Let's have a check here to see how much you remembered.

Let's answer this question to together.

Where would you find the Giant's Causeway? Is it A, by the coast? B, in a city? Or C, in a town? Pause the video here and answer this question, where would you find the Giant's Causeway? Did you say A, by the coast? Well done if you did.

The Giant's Causeway is located on the north coast of Northern Ireland.

It's now time for task B, which is your second task in today's lesson.

I would like you to use Google Earth to help you locate the following features and label them on this map.

The features I would like you to locate are Belfast, Lough Neagh, Slieve Donard, and the Giant's Causeway.

Google Earth will help you find these features on a map.

Make sure you label your map with capital letters at the beginning because these are all names of places.

Pause the video here and label your map.

Well done for finding these features using Google Earth.

Did you locate Giant's Causeway, which is one of Northern Ireland's coastal features in the north of Northern Ireland? It is made up of 40,000 natural stone pillars.

Did you label Slieve Donard, which is 850 metres tall? Did you manage to locate Lough Neagh, which is the largest freshwater lake in the United Kingdom? Remember, it gives Belfast over half of their drinking water.

Remember, lough is the Irish word for lake.

And finally, did you locate Belfast on the map, which is the capital city of Northern Ireland? Remember that there are 345,418 people living in Belfast.

Let's go through a summary of the learning that we've completed together today.

We've learned that the highest mountain in Northern Ireland is Slieve Donard in the Mourne mountains to the southeast.

We've also learned that most people in Northern Ireland live in Belfast, Northern Ireland's capital and biggest city.

We've learn the countryside in Northern Ireland has small towns and villages, farms, forests, and the UK's largest lake, Lough Neagh.

And finally, we've learned that Northern Ireland has some incredible coastal features.

You've been fantastic today.

Give yourself one last thumbs up and well done for joining me today and sharing your learning with me.

See you next time for some more geography lessons.

Bye.
