Hi everyone, my name is Miss Sabzvari, and I'm really excited that you decided to join me today for our maths lesson.

The unit that we're studying is time.

In the previous lesson, we focused on knowing that there are sixty minutes in one hour.

In this lesson, we'll be identifying quarter past on an analogue clock.

So, when you're ready, let's begin.

Let's have a look at today's Lesson Agenda.

So, first we'll begin by identifying quarter past the hour.

Then, we'll move onto our Talk Task.

After that, we'll learn how to draw the hands on a clock.

And, finally, you'll complete your Independent Task.

Before we begin today's lesson, you will need the following items. You will need something to write with and something to write on, you will need an analogue clock, and you will need a ruler.

So, please pause the video now and get the items that you need.

Identifying quarter past the hour.

Let's have a look at the clock on our screen.

What time does the clock show and how do you know? Pause the video now and share your answer.

Great job! So, the clock is showing one o'clock.

I know this because the hour hand is pointing to one on the hour scale, and the minute hand is pointing to sixty, or zero, on the minute scale.

Great job.

What time does the clock show and how do you know? Great job! So, we can see that it's half past one, and I know it's half past one because the hour hand is pointing to just after one on the hour scale, and the minute hand is pointing to thirty minutes on the minute scale.

And I can see that the minute hand is half of the way around the clock.

So, therefore, it's half past one.

Great job.

What time does the clock show and how do you know? Excellent! So, I can see it's quarter past one.

My turn, your turn.

Quarter past one.

Now, some of you might have said that it's fifteen minutes past, you're absolutely right, it is fifteen minutes past, but when the minute hand is on fifteen minutes on the minute scale, we say quarter past.

Okay? So, the minute hand has travelled one quarter of the way around the clock, okay? What time does the clock show and how do you know? Pause the video now and share your answers with the screen.

Great job! So, the first clock, we can see it's two o'clock, and I know it's two o'clock because the hour hand is pointing to two on the hour scale, and the minute hand is pointing to zero, or sixty, on the minute scale.

The second clock is showing half past two, because I can see that the hour hand is pointing to just after two, and the minute hand is halfway around the clock and it's pointing to thirty minutes on the minute scale.

Therefore, it's half past two.

And on the third clock, I can see it's quarter past two, because the hour hand is pointing to just after two, and the minute hand is one quarter of the way around the clock and it's pointing to fifteen minutes on the minute scale.

Great work.

Now, let's have a look at the clocks on our screen.

We can see the first clock is showing quarter past one, quarter past two, and finally, quarter past three.

Now, I would like you to answer the following question or statement with always, sometimes, or never.

Okay? When the time is quarter past, the minute hand points to fifteen on the minute scale.

Is this always, sometimes, or never? Pause the video and share your answer with the screen.

Excellent job, it's always! So, whenever it's quarter past, the minute hand is going to be pointing to fifteen minutes on the minute scale, okay? Great job.

Now, moving on to a Talk Task.

What I would like you to do is to choose a clock and to show the time on your clock.

Okay? If you don't have one, that's okay.

You can just read the time out loud and explain how you know.

So, show the time on your clock, and read the time out and explain how you know.

And then, we'll go through the answers together.

So, let's have a look at the answers together.

I have a first clock is showing quarter past eight, because the hour hand is pointing to eight on the hour scale, and the minute hand is pointing to fifteen on the minute scale.

Great job.

The next clock is showing half past eight.

I know this because the hour hand is pointing to just after eight, and the minute hand is pointing to thirty on the minute scale.

And finally, the last clock is showing eight o'clock, because the hour hand is pointing to eight on the hour scale, and the minute hand is pointing to zero, or sixty, on the minute scale.

Well done if you got that correct.

Drawing hands.

Now, before we learn how to draw hands on a clock, what we're going to do is we're going to answer our Quick Check questions, okay? So, I would like you to have a look at the clock in the middle of your screen and I want you to point to the correct answer, okay? So, if the clock is showing quarter past nine, or nine o'clock.

Two.

One.

Point! Great job! So, the clock is showing quarter past nine, and I know this because the hour hand is just after nine, and the minute hand is pointing to fifteen minutes on the minute scale.

What about the next time? Is it quarter past nine, or half past nine? In three.

Point! Good job! It's half past nine.

And how do you know? Tell your screen.

Good job! So, I know this is half past nine because the hour hand is pointing to just after nine on the hour scale, and the minute hand is pointing to thirty on the minute scale.

What time is this clock showing? Is it half past ten, or half past nine? In three.

Two.

One.

Point! Good job if you got the answer correct, it is half past ten.

I know this because I know that the hour hand is pointing to just after ten, and the minute hand is pointing to thirty on the minute scale.

Now, what I would like you to do is to draw these clocks on your piece of paper.

Do that now.

Great job.

Now, what I'd like you to do is to have a go at showing the times on the clock, okay? So, what I would like you to do is to draw seven o'clock, to draw half past seven, and quarter past seven.

Then, we're going to go through the answers together.

Okay, so the first time that I'm showing on my clock is seven o'clock.

So, I know in order for it to be o'clock, the minute hand is going to be pointing to zero, or sixty, minutes, okay? So, I'm going to draw my minute hand.

Now, my minute hand needs to be the longest hand.

Okay? A little like that.

Then, I know it's seven o'clock, therefore, my hour hand is going to be pointing to seven.

And again, I'm going to use my ruler, and I'm going to draw my hour hand.

And we need to make sure that our hour hand is much shorter than our minute hand.

So, well done if you got that correct.

The next time I'm showing is half past seven, okay? So, I know that in order for a time to be half past, the minute hand needs to be on thirty minutes.

So, I'm going to draw my minute hand, which is the longest hand, and half past seven.

So, I know that seven o'clock, my hour hand would be pointing to seven.

At half past, the hour hand is going to be pointing to just, or halfway between, seven and eight.

So, I'm going to draw my hour hand.

So, half past seven.

Again, making sure that the hour hand is much shorter than the minute hand.

Quarter past seven, okay? So, I know that quarter past, then minute hand needs to be on fifteen minutes.

So, five, ten, fifteen.

So, I'm going to draw my minute hand, okay? And quarter past seven.

If it's seven o'clock, I know that the hour hand would be pointing to seven, but it's quarter past, so it's going to be pointing to just after seven, going towards eight.

Well done.

So, moving on to Independent Task.

What I would like you to do is to draw the hands on the clocks for the times shown, okay? So, quarter past three, quarter past two, and quarter past one.

Do that now.

So, we can see that quarter past three.

I always have my hour hand pointing to just after three on the hour scale and my minute hand will be pointing on fifteen minutes, okay? So, five, ten, fifteen.

Great job.

Quarter past two, again, my hour hand would be pointing to just after two on the hour scale, and my minute hand would be pointing to fifteen on the minute scale.

Great job.

And finally, quarter past one.

Again, my hour hand is going to be pointing to just after one, because it's quarter past one, and my minute hand is going to be pointing to fifteen minutes on the minute scale.
