My name is Miss Sabzvari, and I'm really excited that you decided to join me today from our maths lesson.

The unit that we're studying is Time.

In the previous lesson, we focused on identifying quarter past, on an analogue clock.

In today's lesson, we'll focus on identifying quarter to, on an analogue clock.

So when you're ready, let's begin.

Let's have a look at today's lesson agenda.

First we'll begin by identifying quarter to the hour.

Then we'll move on to a talk task.

After that we'll practise doing hands on a clock, and finally you will complete your independent task.

And before we begin today's lesson, you will need the following items. You will need something to write with, and something to write on.

You will need a clock, and you'll need a ruler.

Don't worry if you don't have any clock.

So please pause the video now, and get the items that you need.

Identifying quarter to the hour.

Let's have a look at the clock on your screen.

What time does the clock show, and how do you know? Pause the video now, and tell your screen.

So the clock is showing quarter past one.

We know that it's quarter past one, because the minute hand is pointing to 15 minutes on the minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to just after one.

So we know that it's quarter past one.

Good job.

What time does this clock show, and how do you know? This clock is showing quarter to two? Okay.

So we know that when the minute hand is on 15, that means quarter of an hour has passed.

That's why we say quarter past.

Okay.

But when the minute hand is on 45 minutes, let's check five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 45.

So when the minute hand is on 45 minutes, that means it's quarter of an hour left to the next hour, so to the next O'clock.

Okay.

So that's when we say it's quarter to.

So my turn, your turn.

Quarter to.

Great job.

And we say it's quarter to the next hour.

So whichever hour is going to be next, when the minute hand comes on O'clock, that's the hour that we say.

So here, we can see that's very close to two o'clock.

So in 15 minutes it's going to be two O'clock.

So we say it's quarter to two.

So the minute hand is pointing to 45 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is getting close to three.

So we know that it's quarter to three.

So we can see the first clock is showing quarter past three, because the minute hand is on 15 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is just past three.

And on the second clock, we can see that it's quarter to four.

We can see that the minute hand is pointing to 45 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is getting very close to four.

So moving on to our talk task.

WHat I would like you to do, is using your clock to show the time when your clock, if you don't have a clock, that's okay, you can read the time out and explain how you know.

And then we'll go through the answers together.

So let's have a look at the first clock.

We can see that it is quarter past nine because, the minute hand is on 15 minutes on minute scale, and the hour hand is just past nine, so it's quarter past nine.

On the second clock, we can see that it's quarter to 10.

That means that the minute hand is on 45 minutes on the minute scale, and the hour hand is very close to 10.

And the last clock is showing quarter to five.

And we know this because the minute hand is pointing to 45 minutes on the minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to, or is very close to five on the hour scale.

So well done if we got that correct.

So before I move on to drawing our hands on our clocks, what we're going to do is to answer our quick check questions.

So what I would like you to do, is to look at the clock, and I want you to choose whether it's quarter past four, or quarter to four.

So in three, two, one, point.

Great job.

It's quarter to four.

And how do you know? Tell you a screen.

Excellent job.

We know that it's quarter to four because, the minute hand is pointing to 45 minutes on the minute scale, and the hour hand, very close to four.

Therefore, it's quarter to four.

Great work.

Let's have a look at the next clock.

What time is the clock showing? Is it because the past four, or quarter to four.

In three, two, one, point.

Great job, it's quarter past four.

And I know this because the minutes hand is pointing to 15 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to just after the four on the hour scale.

Great job.

What time is this clock showing? Is it quarter to four, or quarter to five? In three, two, one, point.

Great job, is quarter to five because, the minute hand is on 45 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is is getting very close to five.

Therefore it's quarter to five.

Good job.

So what I would like you to do, is to draw these clocks on your piece of paper, do that now.

Now what I would like you to do, is using your ruler, is to draw the hands for the clocks.

So the first clock is to show quarter to eight, quarter past eight, and quarter to nine.

Do that now, and then we'll go through the answers together.

Let's have a look at the first clock.

I know the first clock needs to show quarter to eight.

So quarter to eight, I know the minute hand needs to be on a 45 minutes on a minute scale.

So let's count together.

Five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45.

So I'm going to draw my minute hand on 45 to show quarter to.

That's going to be quarter to eight.

So I'm going to find eight.

It's not going to be exactly on eight because it hasn't reached eight o'clock yet, it's quarter to.

In 15 minutes it will be eight o'clock.

So, I'm going to draw my hour hand just before eight.

Good work.

Remembering, that's my hour hand needs to be shorter than my minute hand.

Good job.

The next clock needs to show quarter past eight.

And I know that quarter past eight, the minute hand needs to be on 15 minutes, on the minute scale.

So five, 10, 15.

So I'm going to draw my minute hand.

And it's going to be quarter past eight.

So it has been eight o'clock, and now it's quarter past.

So my hour hand is going to be pointing to eight.

Great job.

And quarter to nine.

Again, I know that quarter to, that means my minute hand is going to be on 45 minutes.

So I'm going to draw my minute hand.

So it needs to be longer.

My hour hand is going to be pointing to just before nine.

So it's not nine o'clock yet.

So is going to be just before.

Again, making sure that my hour hand is shorter than my minute hand.
