Hello, everybody.
It's Mrs. Franzsen here.
Welcome to Computing.
Today, we are going to be learning all about technology.
I hope you are as excited as me.
Are you ready? Then let's get started.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to find and describe examples of how information technology is used in the world beyond school.
Let's look at our keywords for today.
We are going to do my turn and your turn.
So that means that I'm going to say the keyword, then I want you to say the keyword, and then I want you to listen carefully while I explain the keyword.
All right? So here we go.
First word.
My turn, computer.
Your turn.
That's great.
So a computer is a machine that follows a programme.
Next word.
My turn, device.
Your turn.
That's great.
A device is a type of machine.
In the first part of this lesson, you are going to recognise IT in different places.
Are you ready? Let's go.
Information technology, or IT, is a computer or something that works with a computer.
You can already hear that keyword there, computer, because everything today is going to be relating to computers.
IT devices help us with different kinds of tasks.
Did you hear our other keyword there, devices? So remember when we say device, we are usually referring to a type of machine.
IT devices help us with different kinds of tasks.
In my image there we've got three types of computer.
We've got a tablet, we've got a laptop, and we've got a desktop computer.
We use IT at school.
There are many other places where we can find IT.
Can you think of any? Pause the video here and have a think about that.
At home, people can have smartphones and tablets.
A smartphone has a computer inside it.
People use smartphones to talk to others, take photos, and search for information.
Now, when we say a smartphone, we mean a phone that has a computer inside it.
These days, most phones do have a computer inside it.
In the olden days, before we had invented computers, we invented phones first, and phones did not always have a computer inside them.
Nowadays, computers are often found inside phones.
So you might hear people say phones when they mean smartphones.
Some people use tablets at home.
Tablets are similar to smartphones, as they also have a touch screen.
Tablets are used for talking to people, playing games, and finding information.
Smart televisions use computers, oh, there's our keyword again, to do more than just show shows and movies.
Smart televisions can also connect to the internet so you can watch videos or listen to music.
The computer inside the TV controls the apps you select videos from.
So that word smart has come up again.
It's talking about smart televisions.
Because, again, in the olden days we invented televisions first, and then later we put computers into them.
So some older TVs might not have a computer inside them, but more modern TVs will have a computer inside them, and we sometimes call these televisions smart TVs because they have a computer inside.
Let's do a check here.
Where would you probably find more information technology devices? Would it be A, in a house, B, on a beach, or C, in the woods? Think about which answer you would choose and pause the video here.
Well done for thinking about your answers.
Where would you probably find more information technology devices? The answer was A, in a house.
Because most electronic IT devices use electricity, so you would more often find them in a house.
Traffic lights use computers to control the colours of the lights.
The computer sends a signal to the lights to tell it when to turn green, yellow, or red.
This helps cars, bikes, and people take turns safely and keeps traffic moving smoothly.
Security cameras use computers to help watch and record what is happening.
The computer inside the camera saves the videos and sometimes can send a warning if something looks unusual.
This helps keep people and places safe.
IT can also be in places where people travel.
At train stations and bus stops, digital signs use computers to show information.
The computer sends information to the sign, like what time the train or bus will arrive and where it is going.
This helps people know when to get ready and where to go.
You might spot a word on the sign in the top corner that says delayed.
So the train that was supposed to arrive has been delayed.
Let's do a check here.
True or false? Information technology can only be found indoors.
Pause the video now and think about your answer.
The answer was false.
Why? Information technology devices are found in many outdoor settings too, like with traffic lights and security cameras.
Well done if you've got that answer correct.
Okay, we're gonna get ready for a task now.
I want you to sort the IT devices.
So it says here, sort the IT devices by placing them in the correct locations.
So that means where they are found.
So we've got two groups.
We've got in the home and not in the home.
So I would like you to sort the devices into the two groups.
We have got digital sign, smart watch, tablet, smartphone, traffic light, and smart television, a smart TV.
You can sort them into in the home and not in the home.
It's time to pause the video now and work on this task, and I'll be here when you get back.
Well done for working on this task.
Let's see how you sorted out the IT devices.
This is how I did the task.
In the home category, I put tablet, digital sign, smartphone, and smart TV.
And not in the home, I put digital sign, smartphone, smart watch, and traffic light.
Did you notice that some of my devices I put in both groups? You might have done that.
I put the digital sign in both groups because you can find a digital sign in the home, like on a electricity smart metre, and also not in the home, like at a train station.
I also put the smartphone in the home and not in the home because many people travel with their phones, don't they? They keep them in their pockets or in a bag.
So you might find it in the home or not in the home.
Well done for working on this task.
Let's look at the next part of the lesson now where we will work on identifying IT in a workplace.
People use IT at work.
They use computers to send emails, write documents, and look up information.
The computer helps people work quickly and stay connected to other people.
Some people use printers at work.
A printer has a computer inside it that receives files and puts them onto paper.
This makes it easy to share important information.
Some people print out stories or documents or photographs.
There are lots of kinds of information that we can print onto paper.
Let's do a check here.
It says, which device can you use to look up information? Is it A, laptop, B, printer, or C, traffic light? Pause the video now and think about what your answer would be.
Well done for thinking about your answer.
Which device can you use to look up information? The answer was A, laptop.
Well done if you got that one right.
Information technology is used in hospitals.
Doctors use special devices called medical scanners to see inside the body.
The computer inside of the scanner generates pictures from sound waves.
The pictures are sent to a screen, and they help doctors check if everything is healthy.
Hospitals also use computers in devices that check your heartbeat or blood pressure.
The computer in the device helps read the information quickly and shows it to the doctors so they can take care of you.
Let's do a check here.
What device helps doctors check inside a patient's body? We've got A, medical traffic light, B, medical scanner, C, medical laptop.
Pause the video now and think about what your answer would be.
Well done for working on this question.
What device helps doctors check inside a patient's body? The answer is B, medical scanner.
Well done if you got that one correct.
Most jobs now use IT.
Even jobs that did not need information technology before now use it in some way.
Can you think of any job where people do not use any information technology? Farmers use their knowledge and experience to decide when to water their plants.
Many farmers also use computers to check the weather and control watering machines.
A computer is one of the tools that a farmer uses to make sure the plants get just the right amount of water so they can grow strong and healthy.
Okay, we are going to work on a task now.
It says, choose one information technology device.
And there are some photographs here of different devices to help you think about that.
We've got a tablet, a smartphone, a printer, a traffic light, a pulse oximeter, a security camera, a medical scanner, and a laptop.
You don't have to use one of these devices.
You might have another IT device that you want to use, and that's okay.
The task is, choose one information technology device.
Write about why the device is important.
Use these sentence starters to help you.
So the sentence starter is blank, and it says blank are important because.
If we did not have, then it would make it more difficult to.
And then once you finished your sentences, I want you to draw a picture of the device.
It's time to pause the video now to work on this task, and I'll be here to give you some examples when you get back.
Welcome back.
Well done for your effort on this task, working so hard to write about why the IT device was important to you.
I'm going to show you some examples now.
The first one I wrote was all about my device.
Can you see it in my photo? The traffic light.
So I wrote, traffic lights are important because they make roads safer.
If we did not have traffic lights, then it would be more difficult to cross the road or drive to places.
In my second example, I was writing about medical scanners.
So my sentences here say, medical scanners are important because they help doctors look after people.
If we didn't have medical scanners, then it would make it more difficult to know if someone was ill.
Well done for all of your hard work on this task.
You have worked really hard in this lesson today.
Let's summarise our learning.
Information technology is used in many places.
We use it at home, at school, in shops, and outside.
People use information technology to help them work in offices and hospitals.
Most jobs use information technology.
Even jobs that did not use information technology in the past now use it much more.
Thank you for coming to learn with me today.
I hope you enjoyed learning all about technology with me, and I hope to see you again soon.
