Hi everyone, I'm Mrs. Courts.

I'm very excited to join you today for our lesson on joining materials in moving cards.

This is part of the Levers and Sliders Moving Cards unit.

Our lesson outcome for today is, I can use different techniques to finish my moving greetings card effectively.

We've got lots of new keywords today, so you really need to be listening.

Are you sat ready? Brilliant.

I'll say the word first and then you repeat after me.

Technique.

A technique is a special way of doing something.

Background.

The background is the part behind the main picture.

Effects.

The effects make the designs eye-catching.

Foreground.

The foreground is the main picture.

And font.

The font is the style of lettering.

Well done, great listening.

In our lesson outline today, you can see there are two learning cycles.

The first is adding detail using different material.

Greetings cards need to be eye-catching for the user.

You might have seen greetings cards when you went to the shops.

There are different parts of a greetings card that need to stand out.

The background, the lettering, the foreground.

The background is the part behind the main picture.

The background on this greetings card is a bright blue sky with a rainbow.

The foreground is the main picture, and on this greetings card, the foreground is a colourful birthday cake and presents.

And the lettering is the words that you can read.

The lettering on this card is big and capital letters.

What else can you spot? Pause the video and have a little look.

Right, we are ready for our first check for understanding.

You have to label the parts on the greeting cards.

Can you pause the video now and have a go? Right.

Let's have a look.

So label the parts on the greeting card.

You should have put background, labelled the lettering, and the foreground.

Remember the background's a bit behind the picture, the foreground is the bit, the picture, and the lettering, big lettering at the front.

Greetings cards need to be eye-catching to the user, and a designer can use effects to add detail and interest to the cards.

Effects can include using different colours, shapes and materials.

Paper and cards and other materials can be used in different ways to create different effects.

Cutting, you see there are a pair of scissors and different shapes that can be cut, folding or twisting, and these are just some of the effects that you can create.

Other materials can also be used to create effects.

Googly eyes, you might use these for animals and people, monsters or characters.

Some string for rivers, for hair, for fur or swirled to make the sun, or for feathers where you might use feathers for nests and clouds, animals.

Other materials for different effects might be card, coloured, metallic, glossy or mirrored.

You might use sequins, glitter shapes or you might use felt and fabric and ribbon.

Pom-poms and pipe cleaners or straws and lolly sticks, bubble wraps, cellophane and foils.

All of these create different effects.

Another check for understanding.

Are you ready? What do effects do in a design? So what do effects do in a design? Is it A, make the design more eye-catching and interesting? B, hide important parts of the design, or C, make the design easier to understand.

What do effects do in a design? Pause the video and have a think.

Right.

Let's see if you got it right.

So what do effects do in a design? They, that's right, if view put A, they make the design more eye-catching and interesting.

Well done.

The font is a style of writing used with lettering.

Designers use different lettering fonts to make words look fun, easy to read, exciting, depending on what they want to say.

Fonts can be curly, colourful, capital letters, bubble, bold, robotic, old-fashioned.

Designers might use the following to create different fonts.

They might use pencils or colouring pencils, felt pens, handwriting pens, paper, or card or even printed type.

Another check for understanding, this is a true or false question.

Designers use fonts to make words look fun or easy to read.

Is this true or is this false? Pause the video.

Have a think.

Right, let's see if you got it right.

Designers use fonts to make words look fun or easy to read? That is, you're right if you put true, well done.

Why do you think this is, why? Fonts can make a message stand out or feel just right for the design.

Well done for your hard work.

We are now ready for our first task.

Are you sitting up straight and listening? Super.

First thing, talk with a partner about the effects you will use for your greetings card.

Secondly, talk about what font you will use for the lettering.

And thirdly, write a list of materials you will use.

Pause the video now and start task A.

Welcome back.

Well, by now you should have talked to your friend and you should have made your list.

Well, Jacob shared his answers, he says, "Firstly, I'm going to use a red coloured background and cut out a present out of card with a teddy bear inside." Jacob said he will use felt tip pen to write Happy Birthday in a capital letter font.

And Jacob said he will use these materials: red card folded in half for the background, blue and yellow card for the present in the foreground and ribbon to put on the present.

Well done for your hard work so far.

We are now ready for our second learning cycle and this is about our joining techniques.

When you make your greetings card, it is important to know how to join materials together.

Otherwise, your card will fall apart and we don't want that.

It's important that we use the correct joining techniques.

A technique is a special way of doing something.

These are types of joining techniques.

Double-sided tape, glue stick, PVA glue and split pins.

You should have quite a lot of these at school.

Right, our next check for understanding, are you ready? Which of these is a joining technique? Pause the video and have a think.

Which of these is a joining technique? A, well done.

A, PVA glue is a joining technique.

Double-sided tape is really good because it joins materials together whilst being hidden.

It can join different types of materials together, but it can be quite tricky to use.

Izzy says, "Only peel the backing strip when the objects are ready to be stuck." PVA glue is another good way to join.

It can be a strong glue and really good for cards.

However, it can be quite messy to use.

And Laura says, "Use a little bit at a time; a thin layer is all you need." Right, a quick check for understanding.

Are you ready? Aisha says, "I want to stick a feather to my card without it looking messy, what should I use?" Alex says, "You could use sticky tape." Is Alex correct? Pause the video and have a little think.

Is Alex correct? No, sticky tape would be seen because it would have to stick over the feather onto the card.

Double-sided tape between the card and feather would have been better.

Glue sticks are another way of joining.

It's really good because it doesn't create much mess and it's very quick drying.

It joins card and paper products well, but it's not strong with other materials.

Jun says, "When using the tissue paper, add glue to the card and then add tissue paper, not the other way around." It could get quite messy.

Split pins are another joining way.

They are good because they create a strong join between materials, particularly cards.

They allow for movement in mechanisms, but they are hard to hide the join.

Alex says, "Card is best to use for split pins; other materials are too thin or too thick." Right, ready for our second task.

Are you sitting nicely and listening? Well done.

First part, using your ideas from task A and knowledge of joining materials, finish your greetings cards by including the mechanism, the background, the foreground, and the font.

Pause the video and start task B.

Right, by now you should have completed task B and you should include your mechanism, your background, your foreground, and your font.

Well, your card should be finished.

And Jacob's finished design looked like this.

Jacob says, "My card has a lever mechanism.

There is a red background with a present in the foreground.

I've used a capital letter font." As you can see, we've reached the end of our lesson for today, and by now you should have made your greetings card.

There's lots of learning that we've completed along the way, and maybe you could show a thumbs up for the learning points that you've understood.

Are you ready? A designer can use effects to add interest to a moving greetings card to make it more eye-catching.

Well done.

Effects can be included to the background and foreground using different materials.

Super.

Fonts are types of lettering style, which can also add interest to a design.

Brilliant.

And joining different materials may need different techniques.

A technique is a special way of doing something.

Well done.

Super, we've reached the end of our lesson and I hope you've had lots of fun, and I'll see you next time, bye.
