Hello, everybody.
It's Mrs. Franzsen here.
It's really good to see you.
Welcome to Computing.
Today we are going to be looking at some digital writing.
Are you ready? Then let's get started.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to add capital letters and change your text.
Let's go through our keywords for today.
We're going to do my turn, your turn for this.
That means that I'm going to say the keyword, then I want you to say the keyword, and then I want you to listen carefully while I explain the keyword.
So here we go, first word, my turn.
Caps Lock.
Your turn.
Well done, Caps Lock is the key that turns on typing in all capital letters.
Next word, my turn.
Shift.
Your turn.
Shift is the key you hold down to type a capital letter.
Next word, my turn.
Select.
Your turn.
That's great, selecting shows the word processor which text you want to change.
Next word, my turn.
Double click or tap.
Your turn.
Well done, double click is clicking or tapping twice.
In the first part of the lesson, we are going to look at typing capital letters using a keyboard.
Here is our computer keyboard.
What keys do you recognise? Have a good look.
These keys are the ones that you will use the most.
I've highlighted them for you in purple.
Let's go through them together.
We've got the number keys up at the top.
You might hear this called the number row at the top of the keyboard.
We've got our numbers from 1 and then we've got 9 and it also goes to 0 at the end, because remember we use that 0 key to make our bigger numbers.
So if we wanted to do 10, we would use the 1 key and then the 0 key.
We've got our letter keys in the middle.
These are the ones we'll be using the most.
And remember that our letter keys are all printed in a capital letter style, so they all look like they are capital letters on the key.
We've got our Backspace up in the top corner.
On some people's keyboards, there might be an arrow on this key pointing to the left.
We've got our Enter key.
The Enter key can be different shapes and it might have an arrow on it as well.
At the bottom, the big long bar, that is the space bar, and we use it to put a finger space when we are typing.
Here's a question for you.
What do you need at the start of sentences? Have a look at my three sentences here in the word processor.
I'm going to read them for you.
"The cat sat on the mat.
The brown dog was jumping high.
The red fox ran across the field." And at the end of that sentence, that line is my cursor.
What do you need at the start of sentences? Pause the video here and think about the answer to that question.
Well done for thinking about that question.
You need capital letters at the start of sentences.
All three of my sentences in that example started with the word the and they all had the capital T at the beginning of that word.
You also need capital letters for names of people, places and days of the week.
Let's go through these sentences and see what other capital letters we can spot.
The first sentence reads, "I can see Sam with the dog." Well done if you noticed the capital I and the capital S for Sam.
Next sentence reads, "We are going swimming with Laura." That's right, Laura's got the capital L, and there's one at the beginning of the sentence with the W for we.
The third sentence reads, "On Monday, we will go to London." So we've got a capital at the beginning of the sentence, O for on, then there is a capital M for Monday, and capital L for London.
Well done if you spotted those.
This is the Caps Lock key.
Caps Lock was one of our keywords, it's quite an important word for today.
Caps Lock is the key that makes the capital letters.
After you have pressed the Caps Lock, it will make all the text you type appear as capital letters.
Pressing it again will switch this off.
This sentence in the word processor has been written in all capital letters.
It says, "On Friday, Aisha played with her friends," and we typed it this way by using the Caps Lock.
Which key do you press to type all of the letters as capital letters? Is it A, Backspace key, B, Space key, or C, Caps Locks key? Pause your video here to think about your answer.
Welcome back, which key do you press to type all of the letters as capital letters? The answer was C.
Well done if you got that one right.
This is the Shift key.
Do you see that the Shift key is underneath the Caps Lock key on my keyboard? Sofia says, "The Shift key only makes letters capital when it is pressed and held down while a letter key is pressed." Let's do a check now, true or false? Pressing the Shift key makes all the letters capital at once.
You can pause the video here to think about your answer.
Welcome back, well done for thinking about that question.
True or false? Pressing the Shift key makes all the letters capital at once.
The answer is false.
Why? The answer is false because the Shift key only makes letters capital one at a time, when it is pressed and held along with a letter key.
Well done if you got that right.
Okay, it's time for a task now.
This poster is missing its capital letters.
Download the Task A file, change the poster so that the correct letters are capital.
Our poster is a missing poster.
A teddy has gone missing.
The poster reads "missing" as its title.
Then, under the photo of the teddy, it reads, "This is Ted.
He has two brown eyes.
Ted has soft brown fur.
Ted is small." Your job is to change the poster so that the correct letters are capital.
It's time for you to go and work on your poster task now.
You can pause the video here and when you get back I can show you an example.
Welcome back, let's look at the poster.
You can see here that we have put some capital letters in.
We've got a capital M for "Missing" in the title at the top.
In our sentences, we have started all of our sentence with capital letters and we have also capitalised Ted's name.
Because Ted is a name, it needs to start with a capital.
Well done for all of your hard work in that poster task.
In the next part of the lesson, we will be working on selecting text in a word processor.
When we type, what shows us where the next letter or word will go? You can see a flashing line next to my word here.
My word is hi, and then there is a flashing line.
I wonder if you know the name of this line? The blinking line on the screen is called the cursor.
Well done if you got that right.
The cursor shows us where the next letter or word will go when we type.
When you are working in a word processor, you will quite often see that flashing line, and it is a really good symbol that shows you that you can type in that space.
Let's do a check here.
In a word processor, what happens when you click or tap on a page? Is it A, the cursor moves to where you can type; B, the cursor removes text; or C, the cursor hides the text? Pause the video here to think about your answer.
Welcome back, well done for working on that question.
In a word processor, what happens when you click or tap on a page? The answer was A, the cursor moves to where you can type.
Well done if you got that right.
You can remove letters using the Backspace key.
So in the animation here you can see that we have a sentence that's being removed letter by letter with the Backspace key.
Removing words one letter at a time can take a long time.
There we go.
You can delete whole words at a time.
To do this, you need to first select the word.
Select was one of our key words.
Selecting means showing the word processor which text you want to change.
You can select a word by clicking or tapping twice on your mouse or touch screen.
This is called a double click or a double tap.
You can see in the animation here I am double clicking on the word.
Just like that.
You can also select text by placing your cursor at the start or end of a word, then drag your mouse or finger across the word to highlight it.
So in this animation I am clicking and dragging my mouse over the word to highlight it.
Once the word is selected, you can press the Backspace key to remove the word.
Just like that.
This video shows how to remove a whole sentence by selecting the text and using the Backspace key.
To remove my sentence, I can use the Backspace button.
But as you can see, it can take a long time.
The quicker way is to select all of the text, so I can do this by clicking and dragging over the text with my mouse, or tapping and dragging on my touch screen, and then I can press the Backspace button on my keyboard, and that will remove all of the text that I've selected.
Let's do a check here.
What is one way to select text? Is it A, double click or tap on the word; B, type the word; or C, use Backspace? You can pause the video here to think about your answer.
Welcome back, that was good thinking about this question.
What is one way to select text? The answer is A, double click or tap on the word.
Well done if you got that right.
Okay, we're gonna work on a task now.
The task is to download the Task B file.
Use select and the Backspace key.
Find the extra words and remove them.
We have got one, two, three, four, five sentences here.
Each sentence has got a picture as well.
And your job is to read through the sentence and take out the extra words with the Backspace key.
It's time to go and work on your task now.
You can pause the video here and when you get back we can go through the example.
Welcome back, well done for working so hard on your task.
I saw lots of people carefully selecting the words and removing them with the Backspace key, good job.
Watch the video here to review selecting and removing text.
In this task, we have to use select and the Backspace key.
Find the extra words and remove them.
So I'm going to read the first sentence here.
It says, "She plays with the the dog." Did you hear an extra word in this sentence? The extra word was the, so I'm going to remove the word.
I'm gonna click in the sentence to move the cursor down here.
Then I'm gonna click and drag over the the, and then I'm going to tap on the Backspace key on my keyboard to remove the extra word, so it now reads, "She plays with the dog." Great, I'm gonna go down to the next one.
It says, "I want to to ride my bike." Did you hear an extra word in that sentence? The extra word I heard was to, so I need to remove one of the tos.
I'm gonna click to move the cursor, click and drag over the word, and then I'm going to tap on Backspace to remove it.
Third sentence, oh, we've got a lovely plate of food here.
The sentence reads, "Dad ate his his dinner." Can you hear the extra word? His is the extra word in this sentence.
I'm gonna click and drag over that word and tap on Backspace to remove it.
The next sentence reads, "The tree tree has long branches." The extra word in this sentence is tree, we've got two trees.
I'm going to remove the second tree by clicking and dragging over it and tapping on the Backspace.
There we go.
And the last sentence, let's read it, it says, "We will go go to the beach." The extra word here is go, we've got "go go." I'm gonna remove one of these goes, I'm gonna double click on the word because that's another way to select it.
Then, when I tap on Backspace, it will remove the word.
And now the sentence reads, "We will go to the beach." You have worked so hard on your lesson today, well done for all of your effort.
Let's go through a summary of what we've learned.
There are two ways to make capital letters.
You can use the Caps Lock key.
You can also hold down the Shift key and then tap a letter key.
To select text, you can click and drag over the word.
Another way to do this is double click on the word with your mouse.
Selecting text lets you remove whole words or sentences with the Backspace key.
Thank you for joining me in this lesson today and I hope to see you again soon.
