Hi, everyone and welcome back to our lessons on Christian beliefs.

I hope you're having a really nice day.

My name is Mrs Day, and I am here to teach you about some Christian beliefs.

And today, we are going to look at the resurrection.

So first thing you need to do is make sure that you have all the equipment that you need for the lesson.

So, you will need something to write with so a pen or a pencil is fine.

You will also need some paper or a notebook to write on.

If possible could you also please find a second coloured pen so that you can mark some of your own work? If you like you can pause the video now and run to get that stuff, before you start.

So what are we learning about today? So this is our agenda for today's lesson.

Firstly, we are going to think about the resurrection So what is it? What happened? What's the general story of the resurrection? And secondly, we are going to think about why the resurrection matters to Christians today.

We know that Christians today still remember the resurrection on Easter.

But why? Why is it so important? So if you're ready start, then we will begin.

So as we think about the resurrection, I wonder if you can remember what happened in the run up to the resurrection.

You can pause the video, for 10 seconds now, and write down what happened in the week before the resurrection.

This will test what you remember from last lesson.

I wonder how much you remembered.

So the week before the resurrection is Holy Week.

You might remember that we have Palm Sunday, Jesus coming into Jerusalem on a donkey, then we have Jesus clearing the tables in the temple.

Then we have Jesus teaching his disciples at the Mount of Olives.

And finally we have the day before the crucifixion, we have the Last Supper, Jesus, his last meal with his disciples.

And we have the story of Judas betraying Jesus.

And then of course, we have the crucifixion.

You might remember we talked about this in the last lesson.

And just to remind you, the crucifixion, was a method of execution that was carried out for the worst type of criminals.

So this was not done all the time.

This was reserved for the worst type of criminals.

This was a really horrible, painful death.

So this is where we are up to on in our story.

The crucifixion happened on the Friday and now we're going to see what happened next.

So what happened next happened on the Sunday morning.

And this event is called the resurrection.

And you might have heard these days before because Easter is celebrated now in line with these events.

So Good Friday is when the crucifixion is remembered.

And Easter Sunday is when the resurrection is remembered.

So what does the resurrection mean? The resurrection is simply, coming back to life.

And now we're going to go into read the story about how Jesus came back to life.

You can follow along the screen with me as I read, and feel free to rewind the video and watch the section again if you didn't get it all the first time.

Very early on Sunday morning, the woman went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared.

They find the stone ruled away from the entrance of the tomb.

So they went in, but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

They stood there puzzled about this, when suddenly, two men in bright shining clothes stood by them.

Full of fear, the woman bowed down to the ground as the man said to them, why are you looking among the dead? For one who is alive? He is not here.

He has been raised.

Remember what he said to you while he was in Galilee.

The son of man must be handed over to sinners be crucified and three days later rise to life.

Then the woman remembered his words.

Returned from the tomb and told all these things to the 11 disciples and all the rest.

The woman were Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Mary the mother of James.

They and the other woman with them told these things to the apostles.

But, the apostles thought that what the woman said was nonsense, and they did not believe them.

But Peter got up and ran to the tomb.

He bent down and saw the grave cloths but nothing else.

Then he went back home, amazed at what had happened.

Luke 24: 1-12.

So here we see, the Bible tells us, that Jesus has risen from the dead.

I want you to imagine the scene.

The woman go to bring spices to the tomb that was normal protocol in that time where people would go with spices for the body.

So the woman arrive, they're really sad, obviously, and when they get there, the tomb is empty.

That doesn't normally happen.

Okay? They were not expecting that to happen.

So the woman arrived at the tomb and it is empty.

And, they're a bit scared, they're a bit afraid and they're confused.

They don't know what has happened.

They don't know if the body has been stolen.

They're not sure what's happened.

But then these two men appear.

And the men say, why are you looking for someone who is alive in a tomb? He's not here, he has risen.

And then the woman suddenly remember they have that light bulb moment where they remember Oh, yeah, Jesus said this was going to happen.

So, they are so excited.

They ran back, they tell all the disciples, but obviously, as you might imagine, some of the disciples think, no, that's not possible.

That hasn't happened, you are making up.

But not Peter.

Peter thinks, okay, I need to go and see this.

And he runs to the tomb and sees that it is empty.

I want you to imagine how excited the followers of Jesus are at this point.

Okay, we see Friday, with the crucifixion was a really sad hard day, and Easter Sunday, when the resurrection happens, we see the excitement of the followers.

We see joy, we see excitement, because they believe that Jesus has been risen from the dead.

So what I would like you to do now, is a little true and false activity.

You've heard a lot of information in the last few minutes.

So I would like you to challenge yourself and see what you can remember.

So, you can either write down true or false, or you can just simply point at screen and wait to see the answer.

So, number one, the woman went to the tomb on Sunday morning.

Is this true? or is this false? Five, four, three, two and one it is true.

Hopefully you all got that right, well done.

Number two, they found that the tomb had been destroyed.

True or false? Five, four, three, two and one.

The answer is of course, false.

The tomb hadn't been destroyed.

Nothing had been damaged, but the stone in front of the tomb had simply been ruled away.

Number three, three man appeared to the woman.

Is that true or is it false? Five, four, three, two and one.

The answer is false.

It was only two men that appeared.

The man told the woman that Jesus had been raised.

Is that true? Or is it false? Five, four, three, two, one.

That is, of course true.

The man said, He is not here, He has been raised.

The woman kept this news a secret.

Is this true? Or is this false Five, four, three, two and one.

This is of course false.

We know that they ran back and shared this news with the disciples.

And finally, Peter was the first disciple to see the empty grave.

Is this true? Or is this false? Five, four, three, two and one.

This is true.

We know that the other disciples weren't sure they didn't really believe the woman, but Peter ran to the tomb.

And wanted to see this for his own eyes.

So that is the story of the resurrection.

And as you can tell, it's very different than the crucifixion story.

The resurrection is a story of joy and surprise, whereas, the crucifixion is a story of sadness and despair.

So what I would like you to do now, is similar to what you did in the last lesson.

I would like you to pause the video to complete this task.

And you're going to write a diary entry from the perspective of one of the women who went to the tomb.

So you should include their feelings their surprise, who they saw what they did, and think about your tone of how you write in this diary entry.

Your tone is going to be very different from the last diary entry that you wrote.

So you can resume the video once you have finished.

Well done.

And I'm sure that your diary entry covers the key areas of the resurrection story.

So, now you're all experts on what happened at the resurrection.

So what the Bible says about the resurrection.

But now we need to consider why the resurrection matters to Christians today.

So we know the story, but why does it matter? Christians today on Easter Sunday, still remember this resurrection story.

This is one of the core parts of Christian belief.

So why do Christians still remember this today? What's the significance of this event? What I would like you to do now is to pause the video to complete this question.

So the question says, why does the resurrection matter to Christians? I want you to build a point some of your ideas, and I put two images on the screen that can help you think of these ideas.

So have a look at the images and see if you can work out why the resurrection still matters to Christians today.

When you finished, you can resume and we will go through some of these reasons together.

Well done.

Now we're going to go through some of these reasons together.

And I wonder you got any of the same reasons.

So firstly, the resurrection shows that God is omnipotent.

What does the word omnipotent mean? Good work.

It means all powerful, well done.

We learned that right back in lesson one.

So well done for remembering.

So, how does the resurrection show that God is omnipotent? I don't know about you, but I don't know very many human beings who can raise people from the dead.

And why is that? It's because we are not all powerful.

As human beings, we don't have the power to do that.

Whereas, this event shows that God does.

It shows that God even has power over death.

That is pretty incredible.

And that's why Christians remember this today, because this is the ultimate display to Christians of God's power.

The second reason why the resurrection is still important to Christians today, is because this gives Christians a belief that there is life after death.

We're going to look at that in a few lessons.

But Christians believe that after they die, there is life.

That they go to be with God.

And this event, sees Jesus rise from the dead.

So they believe that Jesus can be risen from the dead, then they as human beings can be as well.

So here we see two reasons why the resurrection is so important to Christians today.

Now, we are going to think about what Paul said about the resurrection.

So Paul was a follower of Jesus, who we are going to look at later in some of our Christianity lessons.

But he said something really famous about the resurrection.

I'm going to read out this quote to you.

He said, "If Christ has not been raised from death, "then we have nothing to preach, and you have nothing to believe." That's a massive statement.

So Paul says here, that if Jesus didn't rise from the dead, if the resurrection didn't happen, then, there's no point of Christianity.

There's no point of preaching about Jesus, there's no point in believing it.

So if the resurrection didn't happen, there's no point of Christianity.

This is a massive statement.

And why do you think that might be? So why is Paul said such a bold statement? You can have to go and write down what you think, or say it out loud, why do you think Paul has said that if Jesus didn't rise from the dead, there's no point to Christianity.

Let me suggest to you that Paul is saying here that if Jesus didn't rise from the dead, then Jesus is no different to any other human being.

He died as other human beings do.

But nothing happened that proved he was the son of God, and nothing happened to prove that there's life after death.

Paul saying if Jesus didn't rise from the dead, then, the hope that Christians have, actually isn't that secure.

So this is a really interesting statement from Paul.

So what I would like you to do now, is your final task.

And in this task, we are going to think about evaluation.

So evaluation simply means, to consider two sides of an argument, and come to an overall conclusion.

So it's kind of like you're having a debate with yourself.

If you were in a classroom, you might have a debate with the person beside you, you might have two different points of view and I need to argue them.

And then at the end, you might decide, actually, your argument was probably a bit stronger than mine.

So I want you to do that now but with yourself.

So the statement is, the resurrection is more important for Christians than the crucifixion.

So we're going to compare the importance of these two massive events in Christianity.

So what you need to do is come up with reasons for the statement and reasons against the statement.

And then you need to come to an overall conclusion.

So this is what I want you to do, I want you to draw like a table.

So one side agrees one side disagrees.

And then below that, I just want you to write your overall conclusion.

So you need to write your points on both sides first, and then come to your overall conclusion.

Now you can pause the video to complete this task, and you can resume once you are finished.

Really well done.

Now we're going to go through some of these answers together.

So, if you look at the screen, you will see some of the answers I came up with.

So the resurrection is more important than the crucifixion.

That is our statement.

So why could you agree? You could agree because, the resurrection proves that God is omnipotent, and the resurrection means that Christians do not have to fear death, as they believe there's life after death.

But why could you disagree with the statement? So I could say actually, the resurrection is not more important than the crucifixion, because the crucifixion is the ultimate example of God's omnibenevolence, of the fact that God is all loving.

Also, the resurrection is not more important than the crucifixion, because the crucifixion shows God's power as the temple curtain ripped, from top to bottom darkness came over the land, there was this earth quake, you might have came up with some other reasons as well, which is great if they're relevant, you can use any reasons you like.

And then I asked you to come up with your overall conclusion.

So my overall conclusion, is that you can argue that both events are important in the Christian story.

Jesus had to die in order for, human beings to be saved, but you also had to rise again.

So I might conclude that.

Actually they're equally important.

I disagree with the statement, because they are equally important.

I wonder what your conclusion was? There's no right or wrong answer here.

This is your decision.

But what you need to make sure is that you've justified your answer.

So you've given a reason as to why you came to that conclusion.

really well done on that task.

Evaluation is a difficult skill.

But I'm sure you all did really well.
