Hello, my name is Ms. Wroth.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson, Understanding bias.
This fits into the lesson unit, Media influence: What is fake news? Now, in this lesson, we are going to be talking about a topic that might make you feel uncomfortable or worried, so it's recommended that you have a trusted adult with you before you continue watching the video.
Today's lesson outcome is, "I can describe what bias is and explain the impacts of bias." Let's begin at taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have some friends here to help us.
Laura says, "We should listen to others." Andeep says, "We should respect privacy." And that means if somebody decides to share their own story or experience, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, "No judgement !" And that means if somebody does decide to share their own story or experience, that we don't judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." And that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.
These ground rules are here to keep everybody safe throughout the lesson.
Here are today's keywords, assumption, bias, and unconscious.
Assumption is a feeling or belief about something or someone which is not based on evidence.
Bias is a feeling that influences how you respond to a situation or person.
And unconscious, in this context, means a thought or feeling that happens without you realising.
Let's see if we can spot any of these keywords throughout today's lesson.
Here is the lessons outline, and we are going to begin with, what is bias? An assumption is a feeling or belief about something or someone which is not based on evidence.
We often make assumptions about other people, even without realising it.
For example, Izzy says, "I went to the doctors last week and I assumed my doctor was going to be a man as the previous doctors I've seen were men.
Instead, the doctor was a woman." Izzy says, "Am I a bad person for assuming my doctor was going to be a man?" Laura says, "No.
Making assumptions and being biassed is part of being human.
It's only a problem when we don't realise how biassed we are and we allow it to let us treat people unfairly." Time for a check for understanding.
An assumption is, A, factual information, B, a feeling or belief that has evidence, or C, a feeling or belief not based on evidence? Hm, an assumption is.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said C.
An assumption is a feeling or belief not based on evidence.
People can make assumptions about someone based on the way they look or their job.
For example, this person says, "My newspaper delivery person must be a teenage boy because my last one was, and TV shows always show teenage boys doing this job." Another person says, "My teacher can't have tattoos, because teachers don't have tattoos." And somebody else says, "She must be slow at running because she's the shortest in the class." If our assumptions are not challenged, they can start to influence how we behave and treat other people.
This is bias.
Bias can be positive, which means in our favour, or negative, against.
This is a process of an assumption becoming a bias.
We make an assumption.
If it's not challenged, this can become a bias.
We treat people differently.
They or others may then feel upset about this.
For example, you've never seen a girl play football before, so you assume that girls don't like football.
You believe that girls are rubbish at football.
This is bias.
You exclude girls from playing football with you, and then girls feel upset and frustrated.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? When our assumptions are not challenged, they can become a bias.
Hm, you can give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
When our assumptions are not challenged, they can become a bias.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said true.
Bias is a feeling that influences how we respond to a situation or person.
People can be biassed against someone else because of their age, gender, appearance, interests, abilities, or religion.
Assumptions and bias can be learned from our own experiences, our family, our friends, what we see on TV, and what we see online.
All of the information around us can influence the assumptions we make and the bias We develop.
Time for a check for understanding what can influence our assumptions and bias? Is it A, what we see online, B, what's our pets tell us, or C, our family and friends? Hm, what can influence our assumptions and bias? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and C.
What we see online and our families and friends can influence our assumptions and bias.
Time for a task now.
Read the following scenario and then answer the questions.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers do The questions could include, for the first question that says, "What is the example of the bias in the situation?" And the answer is, "Boys can't sing as well as girls and shouldn't audition for the school concert." The second question says, "What is the consequence of the bias in this scenario?" And your answer should include, "The boys at the school feel excluded and upset." Well done if your answers were similar to mine.
We are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson, who can be biassed? Everyone can be biassed.
Sometimes we might be biassed without realising it.
For example, we might pick our best friend to partner up with instead of choosing someone new, or we might judge someone based on the clothes that they're wearing.
When we don't realise that we are being biassed, it is called unconscious bias.
This can lead us to treating people unfairly.
But we should always remember to be kind to others and to treat them with respect.
Time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing word in this sentence.
Unconscious bias is when we don't that we are being biassed.
Hm, fill in the missing word in this sentence, unconscious bias is when we don't that we are being biassed.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said the word, realise.
Unconscious bias is when we don't realise that we are being biassed.
People can easily become biassed because of what they read online.
For example, they might have read a comment which says, "This new song is rubbish." And they might have responded, "You are so right.
This is boring." Andeep says, "I guess if everyone thinks the song is rubbish, then it must be." Online content which is biassed often gets lots of attention and views.
For example, this influencer has posted a comment which says, "Women should stay at home and clean the house," and over 100 people have liked this comment.
Laura says, "People are more likely to engage with content that is shocking.
The more likes and comments an account receives, the more popular they become." As bias content can get a lot of online attention, people can create bias and unfair content to get more likes, followers, and money.
Some people might believe that the biassed content is true because of the amount of attention it has, even if the information is false.
It's important to question if the content has come from a trustworthy source and if what they are saying will give them more likes, followers, or money.
Izzy says, "If you are not sure about whether something online is biassed or not, speak to a trusted adult." Time for a check for understanding.
Why do some people online share biassed content? Is its A, to get more followers, B, to become unpopular, or C, to get money.
Hm, why do some people online share biassed content? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and C.
Some people share bias content online to get more followers and to get money.
Time for a task now.
Jacob is talking about who can be biassed.
Tell your partner two reasons why Jacob is incorrect.
Jacob says, "Only mean people are biassed." Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answer could include, "Anyone can be biassed even without realising it.
This is called unconscious bias.
People can become biassed easily based on what they have seen online.
And people might believe bias more easily when the content has lots of information as this makes it seem true." Well done if your answers were similar to mine.
We are now going to move on to the third and the final part of our lesson, what is the impact of bias? There are lots of impacts of bias.
For example, bias can change the way we treat other people.
Bias can change how much we respect or listen to a person.
Bias can cause people to feel left out.
Time for a check for understanding.
What are some of the impacts of bias? Is it A, bias can change the way we treat other people, B, bias can change how much we respect a person, or C, bias can cause people to feel included? Hm, what are some of the impacts of bias? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and B.
Some of the impacts of bias includes the way it can change the way we treat other people and how much we respect a person.
Bias can change the way we treat other people.
When we have a bias, we might discriminate against someone.
Discrimination means treating someone worse than others because of their characteristics such as age, gender, appearance, interests, abilities, and religion.
Izzy says, "It's never okay to discriminate against someone else." Bias can change how much we respect or listen to a person.
Sometimes the bias is so strong that we struggle to accept when new information is given to us.
For example, Izzy says, "Some people might think my doctor is not very good at her job because she's a woman, even though she has medical qualifications and experience." Bias can cause people to feel left out.
Bias can cause people to treat others unfairly or in a way that they do not deserve.
This can result in discrimination.
People who experience discrimination may feel sad, lonely, worried, or angry.
Time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing word in this sentence, discrimination means treating someone than others because of their characteristics.
Hm, fill in the missing word in this sentence, discrimination means treating someone than others because of their characteristics.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said the word, worse.
Discrimination means treating someone worse than others because of their characteristics.
If we experience discrimination or if we know someone who has been discriminated against, we must tower trusted adult straight away.
We can also ask a trusted adult for help if we would like to challenge our own assumptions or if we are worried we have a bias that could have a negative consequence.
Our trusted adult is there to help us in these situations.
Time for a check for understanding.
What should we do if we experience discrimination? A, tell a trusted adult, B, keep it a secret, or C, discriminate someone else.
Hm, what should we do if we experience discrimination? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A, tele trusted adult.
If we experience discrimination, we must tell our trusted adult.
They are there to help us.
Time for a task now.
Add the potential impacts of bias to the mind map.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay, well done for having a go.
Your answers could look like this, "Bias can change the way we treat other people.
Bias can change how much we respect or listen to a person.
And bias can cause people to feel left out and lead to discrimination." This brings us to the end of our lesson and I've had a wonderful time here with you today.
Thank you for joining me.
Here's a summary of everything that we've covered today.
