I hope that you are just as excited as me to come and do some learning with me today.

Are you ready? And let's go.

By the end of the lesson today, you'll be able to explain that each sprite has its own instructions.

Let's have a look at our keywords today.

We're going to do the keywords in the style of my turn, your turn.

So what that means is I'm going to say the keyword.

I want you to listen carefully and then you are going to say the keyword and then I'm going to explain what the keyword means.

Okay, here we go.

First word, my turn.

Sprite.

Your turn.

That's great.

A sprite is a graphic object that could be controlled by a programme.

Okay, next word.

Here we go.

Grow and shrink.

That's great.

Grow and shrink are command blocks that make a sprite bigger or smaller.

Let's do the next one.

That's great.

An algorithm is a clear set of ordered steps that can be followed by a human or a computer to do a task.

In this first part of the lesson, we are going to be learning about adding and deleting sprites.

Are you ready? And let's go.

To add a sprite to your project, you tap on the blue and white plus symbol.

Did you hear a keyword in that sentence? That's right.

Well done.

Our keyword was sprite.

So to add a sprite to our project, we need to use the blue and white plus symbol down there.

You can see I've labelled it for you.

When we tap on that button, it will let us add a sprite.

Then you can select a sprite from the sprite menu.

The sprite screen has a lot of choices.

You will have to scroll down to see all the options.

To scroll, drag up and down with your finger on the screen.

Tap to select a sprite and then tap on the blue tick button.

We are looking for a blue and white plus symbol to add a sprite to a project.

Look through the sprite menu in ScratchJr to see what sprites you can choose from.

Let's have a look.

We've got loads of animal sprites.

We've got some people sprites.

We've got some travelling sprites.

We've got some plants.

We've got some space and sky sprites.

We've got some building sprites.

And then we've got some objects.

And at the end, we've got some transportation.

In ScratchJr, you can select different backgrounds.

This changes the picture behind a sprite.

There is that keyword again, sprite.

So we've got a sprite in the middle of this picture, don't we? We've got our blue sprite.

Where is Tic? How can you tell? Pause the video now and have a think about that.

Let's have a look at what Aisha thinks.

Aisha says, "Tic is on the moon.

You can tell because of the details like the grey, rocky surface.

You can see the Earth far away." I wonder if you spotted those clues as well.

Who else could belong on the moon? Pause the video and have a think about that.

Let's see who else could belong on the moon.

Do you recognise the sprite? An astronaut sprite on the moon.

Oh, what has happened here? This looks a bit different.

This time the astronaut sprite is somewhere else.

Where are they? Which sprite would fit better in this place? Pause the video now and have a think about that and maybe chat to someone if you've got someone nearby to share with.

Where is the astronaut sprite and which sprite would fit better in this place? Well done for having a think about those questions.

Let's see what Lucas thinks.

Lucas says, "The astronaut sprite is on the beach.

You can see the blue waves and yellow sand.

There is a surfboard.

I think a crab sprite would match the beach better." Well done if you thought of a crab or another beach animal to fit better in this scene.

The crab sprite certainly looks like it fits the beach a lot better than the astronaut did.

We can use different sprites in our programmes.

Having different sprites makes our stories more exciting.

So, by changing the sprite and the background, we've created three different scenes here.

We've got Tic at the park.

We've got the astronaut on the moon.

And we've got the crab at the beach.

We're going to watch a video now to see the steps to add and delete sprites.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to add sprites to your project and also delete them.

So, to add a sprite, we are going to use the blue plus button on the left side, and this is the sprite menu.

You might want to scroll down by dragging your finger until you find the sprite that you want.

Tap on it to select it, and then tap on the tick button to add it to your project.

Now, sprites always end up in the middle, so drag them with your finger to where you want them to go.

Let's do that again.

We're gonna go to the plus icon on the left.

Scroll down to find the sprite that we want to add.

Tap on it to select it, and then tap on the tick icon at the top and move that sprite to the starting position.

I want it to be in just like that.

Now, to delete sprites, you're going to have to press and hold a sprite with your finger until it starts to wiggle, just like that.

Then you can let go and then you tap on the cross to delete that sprite.

Bye-bye, penguin.

Let's do another sprite.

We're going to tap and hold on the rabbit sprite till it starts to wiggle.

Let go and then tap again on the cross.

Bye-bye rabbit.

And let's say goodbye to Tic.

We're going to tap and hold on Tic with our finger, and then let go when it starts to wiggle and then tap on the cross to delete the sprite.

Goodbye, Tic.

All my sprites have been deleted.

All right, let's do a quick check here.

So when we delete a sprite, we're holding our finger down on it until we see the symbol in the middle here, the circle with a white cross.

So a red circle and a white cross.

Well done if you've got that right.

Okay, we're going to do a test now.

All about adding and deleting sprites.

The first part of the task is to add and delete the sprites.

So here are the instructions for that.

Step one.

Add any three sprites to your project.

Choose your favourites.

Step two.

After you've added your sprites, delete all of the sprites.

You can pause the video now and go off and do this part of the task, and I'll be here when you get back to show you how I did it.

You worked so hard on that part of the task.

I saw people adding sprites.

I saw people deleting sprites and I think a lot of people had fun choosing their favourite sprites out of the list.

We're going to watch this video clip now to see how I did this part of the task.

Right, in this task we're adding three sprites and deleting them.

So, to add a sprite, our first step is to go to the blue plus symbol on the left And then tap on a sprite and tap on the tick.

I need to add one more here.

Press on the add sprite symbol.

Tap on the sprite.

Tap on tick.

Right now, for deleting, it's a bit trickier.

We need to tap and hold our finger down on the sprite, just like that.

And then there should be a red cross that pops up when the sprite starts to wiggle.

So tap and hold and then tap.

Lift your finger up and tap on that cross.

Tap and hold.

Tap on the cross to delete.

For the next part of the task, I want you to share what you've done with someone else.

So, when you have finished, I want you to talk to a partner about how you added and deleted your sprites.

I want you to use these words to help you.

You might see our keyword there at the beginning of this list.

So we've got sprite, add, delete, press, hold, and menu.

I heard lots of pairing and sharing, lots of people being able to explain the different steps that they did.

Let's see what Jacob and Izzy have said.

Jacob said, "I added three sprites to my project.

I needed some help with deleting them, but I will keep practising.

And Izzy said, "I had fun looking through the sprites menu to choose my favourite sprites.

I deleted the sprites by holding my finger down on them." So maybe you said some things similar to Izzy and Jacob or maybe you said some different things.

It's really important to share your ideas with other people.

Well done for working on that task.

In the next part of this task, we are going to look at growing and shrinking sprites.

In our programme so far, we have been using blue movement blocks, the yellow start flag block, and the red end block.

So, these blocks might be quite familiar to you.

There are different types of command blocks.

We can see other groups of blocks by pressing on the multicoloured buttons.

So the buttons are down here and you can see in my screenshot that the blue blocks are open.

So all the way across my blocks palette, I've got blue blocks.

The grow and shrink blocks are in the pink looks category.

You might have heard some keywords there.

What were they? Well done.

Grow and shrink.

Let's find out a bit more about that.

So down here, if I tap on the pink looks button, it will open the pink looks menu.

And all the way along my blocks palette, I've got pink blocks.

Over here these two blocks are grow and shrink.

And grow and shrink are going to be used in this part of the lesson.

The values on these blocks will change the amount a sprite will grow or by how much a sprite will shrink.

So you can see at the bottom of the blocks, we have got a value.

Both blocks have start with a value of two and we can change this value to change the amount the sprite will grow or how much a sprite will shrink.

Let's watch this clip now to see how grow and shrink blocks will work in a programme.

Right, I'm gonna demonstrate some new blocks for us.

I'm gonna show you the grow block and the shrink block.

So first things first, I need to start my programme with a command block.

I'm gonna get the grow block from the looks menu here.

This is the grow block.

And then my program's gonna end with the ending block.

Okay, so let's see what's gonna happen to Tic when I run this programme.

I'm gonna use the green flag at the top.

Did you notice that Tic got a bit bigger? Let's see what happens if I change the value of this grow block.

If I make the value larger, Tic's gonna grow larger.

Let's see.

I'm gonna change that two to a five.

Now I'm gonna run the programme.

Oh, Tic is quite a bit bigger.

So let me change it now to an even bigger number.

What have we got? How about eight? I'm gonna run that programme.

Oh, Tic is getting really big now.

If I want Tic to get smaller, I'm going to use a different block.

I'm going to go look in the looks menu again.

I'm going to look for the block that's called shrink.

So, in my programme, I'm gonna change this.

I'm gonna move this grow block away.

I'm gonna put the shrink block in.

So, when I run the programme this time, it will shrink by the value of two.

Let's see what happens to Tic.

Ooh, Tic gets very small.

What if I change it to a larger number? What would happen to Tic? Let's find out.

I can see Tic getting a bit smaller.

Oh, and even smaller.

Tic has become tiny.

Okay, so the grow and shrink blocks let us change how big or how small the characters look.

So we can use these grow and shrink blocks to make our animations more interesting.

If I get this grow block back, I'm gonna change it back to the value of two, and I'm gonna add some more blocks in here.

Let me reset the character, this blue arrow here to make Tic go back to the starting size.

And now, I'm gonna make a new programme where I use grow more than once.

I'm gonna make Tic grow and then move to the right and then grow again.

So we can see the difference in Tic.

And I'm gonna do it one more time as well.

I'm gonna do grow, walk, grow, walk, and then one more grow.

Let's see how that looks.

I'm gonna put the end block on, gonna run the programme.

Here we go.

Wow, Tic's getting quite big, and did you see how Tic was walking to the right and then growing? I hope you enjoy using these grow and shrink blocks in your programme.

Okay, for this task, you are going to create your own programme.

I want you to delete the starting sprite, choose a background and add your own sprite.

Then I want you to create a programme for your sprite that uses the grow and shrink command blocks.

Test your programme.

Your sprite should start their programme when you press the green flag.

I saw sprites growing and I saw sprites shrinking.

Well done for all of your hard work.

Let's watch this clip now and I will show you how I made a grow and shrink programme.

Right.

The first step is to delete the Tic sprite.

So I'm tapping and holding and then tapping on the X to remove.

Next, I'm gonna choose a background.

So I'm gonna tap on the background and tick.

And now I need to add my own sprite.

So I'm gonna add my sprite in the plus menu.

Scrolling down, looking for the sprite I'm going to add.

I'm gonna add the frog sprite.

There we go.

Now the main part of this task is getting this frog to move around and to grow and shrink.

So in my blue movement blocks, I'm gonna do a move up and then a move down.

So I'm thinking about the numbers I'm gonna use for my values.

I want to move the frog up three and then down three, like it's walking up and down the court.

I'm gonna put a grow in the middle here.

I want it to grow quite big.

I'm gonna do a six for grow and then a six for shrink and then a red end block.

Let's run this programme.

There, just like that.

In the next part of this lesson, we are going to work with multiple sprites.

How many sprites can you spot in this project? I spot one, two, three, four.

So I counted four sprites.

How do you know? How did you find the amount of sprites? Pause the video and chat and share about that a little bit.

Right.

There's a few ways to do this.

The first way is that you can count the sprites on the stage.

So here's the stage, and within that stage you can find all of the sprites and count them.

There's another way because on the left you can also see the sprites in the sprite menu, and that's a really good way to count them as well because they will be in that menu like a list, and you can count them.

So you can count one, two, three, four sprites.

You can have more than one sprite in your project.

Each sprite can have its own programme so it can move differently to the other sprites.

So down at the bottom here, we've got the sprite that I've selected.

So I've selected the yellow fish, and you can tell that because in the sprite menu the yellow fish is selected, it's lit up, and at the bottom you can see that drawing, that outline the same shape as my sprite.

And next to the outline down in the programming area, that's where I have programmed that fish.

So that fish has a different programme from any other sprite.

Watch this clip and we're going to see how each sprite can have its own programme.

I'm going to show you in this video how each sprite can have their own programme.

You tap on the menu on the left side and that brings up a different programming area at the bottom for each sprite.

So this way each sprite can have a different programme.

And when you press the big green flag at the top, all of the programmes will start to run and each sprite is moving differently because they all have a different programme at the bottom of their programming area.

Just like that.

Okay, let's do a little check here.

True or false? All sprites share the same programme.

Why? Each sprite has its own programming area.

Sprites have different programmes.

Well done if you got that right.

An algorithm is a set of ordered steps, which can be followed by a human to do a task.

So an algorithm is one of our keywords today.

An algorithm uses human language like directions.

A programme tells a computer what to do.

A programme uses commands.

So, we've got examples of that here down at the bottom.

We've got an algorithm for the starfish, which uses words and directions.

So in the algorithm for the starfish, it says start, move to the right four with the arrow pointing to the right, move up to with an arrow pointing up, and then the word stop.

And then in the programme, you can see that it's using command blocks like ScratchJr.

So we've got a green flag block and move to the right block, a up block, and a red ending block.

So you can see they look similar, but an algorithm is in language that a human can understand and a programme is in a language a computer can understand.

Humans follow an algorithm to create the programme.

Okay, we're going to do a task now.

I hope you're excited for this one.

The first step is to tap on the house icon.

Then I want you to select the question mark and it will open up this menu.

I want you to open the sample project that's called "Under the sea." You can see it's an underwater scene, just like the one I'm showing you here.

The next step is to delete the programmes for each sprite by dragging the command blocks to the blocks palette.

Once all the programmes are deleted, I want you to create a new programme for each sprite using the reference sheet to help you.

Be careful to add the correct programme to the correct sprite.

When each programme is finished, click on the green flag to test your programme is working correctly.

Okay, it is gonna be your turn now to go and work on this task.

Once you have found the project that is the "Under the sea" project and removed all of the programmes, you're going to create a new programme using my reference sheet, and then I want you to test your programmes are all working correctly.

Welcome to the demonstration video for Task A.

The first thing I'm gonna do is come out of this project, gonna go into the main menu, and I'm going to press on the blue question mark to open up the sample projects menu here and open up "Under the sea." Right, now this project has got four sprites.

I'm going to click through each one to check and see what's there.

We've got the seahorse sprite here has two programmes and the starfish.

So what I need to do now is delete all of the programmes that are on these sprites already.

So I'm gonna go to the green fish here and tap and drag these command blocks to the blocks palette to remove them.

Next sprite, tap and drag.

Pull those blocks back into the block palette.

Now the seahorse.

Two programmes here, so tap and drag both of them to clear it up.

And then the starfish.

Gonna tap and drag to remove all of the programmes in this project.

Now, for the next part, I need to look at the algorithm sheet.

I've also put these algorithms on the screen here, so I need to make sure I'm following that algorithm.

I'm gonna get the start block and then I move to the right and then I move to the left, both of those being six times.

And then the end block.

Let's look at the yellow fish.

We need a start block here and then some pink blocks.

We need a grow and a shrink.

Just checking where they are.

That's the grow.

That's the shrink.

So I'm gonna pull those down.

Those values are the same, so they don't need to be changed.

And then the programme needs to end with an end block there.

Yeah, values of two.

On the seahorse, we need our starting block.

Get the green flag.

And then I need some blue movement blocks.

I need a move up and a move down.

There they are.

Gonna drag them down into my programme.

Now, the values here do need to be changed.

Can you see what they need to be changed to? I need to change that one and that one.

They need to be changed to three.

So three up and three down, just like that.

And then on the last sprite, the starfish sprite, we need to make sure we've got that green starting block and then we need some blue movement blocks.

We need a move right and a move up, and then we need the red stop block at the end of the programme.

Before that, I need to make sure I change my values, so changing that to a four and a two to match my algorithm.

And then at the end, I'm gonna pop in that stop block, just like that.

In this last section, I am going to be checking all of my sprites to see that they have got programmes by tapping on them.

Now, once I've seen that, I'm going to run my programme to see that all my sprites move.

Excellent.
