Hello, it's Mrs. Franson here.

It's really great to see you.

I just know that you and I are gonna have a really good time learning about our computing topic today.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to choose suitable tools and colours to make an image in the style of Kandinsky.

Now, Kandinsky is an artist, and we are going to learn more about him later.

Let's go through our keywords for this lesson, only to this lesson.

The first word, my turn, select.

Your turn.

Great.

Select is to make a choice on a computer.

Next word.

My turn, digital.

Your turn.

Great.

Digital is a computing word, so you'll be hearing the word digital a lot.

Digital means something that is saved on a computer.

The first part of our lesson is to learn to decide which painting tools are the best for a task.

Let's go.

Painting programmes have lots of different tools.

The tools give you choices for how you create your pictures.

It's up to you to decide what tools to select.

To select a tool, you click it.

Did you hear one of our keywords there? Select.

So to select something is to choose something on a computer, and we are saying here that, to select a tool, you need to click on it.

At the bottom, we've got a screenshot of my painting programme here.

Can you see what tool is selected? I have selected the paintbrush tool, and you can usually tell when a tool is selected because it lights up or it gets like a box around it.

Let's do a quick check here.

The word select means A, to close, B, to choose, or C to draw.

Which one do you think is the right answer? Pause this video now and see if you can figure out which one is correct.

The correct answer was B, to choose.

The word select means to choose something on the computer.

Well done if you got that right.

Right, we've got a Seaside painting here.

Which tools did I use for this seaside painting? We are going to be detectives now.

I'd like you to look for clues in this painting to see how I created it.

You will be looking for straight lines.

Do you spot any? You will be looking for freehand drawing and painting.

You might also be able to see some filled in areas.

Pause this video and have a think.

See if you can figure out which tools I might have used.

What did I draw using the paintbrush tool? Pause this video here and see if you can decide which parts I drew using the paint brush tool.

Well done for giving that a go.

I drew the clouds, I drew the umbrella shape, and I drew the ice cream all with the paintbrush tool.

I also used the paintbrush tool to colour in the sand using a big brush, and I used a small paintbrush to draw the handle of my bucket.

Where did I use the fill tool in this painting? Pause the video and have a think about where I could have used the fill tool.

Good job having a think about that question.

Let's see where I used the fill tool in this painting I used it to colour in my umbrella a nice bright red.

I used orange to fill the ice cream in my painting.

I used the fill tool for my big blue sky, and I used the fill tool to fill up the rest of my yellow sand.

What did I draw using the line tool? Now, okay, detectives, I need you to look closely at the painting.

You are looking for straight lines.

Pause the video and see if you can figure out what I drew using the line tool.

Welcome back.

Good job if you gave that one a go.

Let's see if we find all the line tool in this painting.

I use the line tool for my umbrella pole.

Do you see how straight it is? I drew that with the line tool.

I also used the line tool for the handle of my spade.

Do you see how the purple spade handle is very straight, with no wobbly bits at all? What did I draw using the shape tool? Now, remember, the shape tool might look different in your painting programme.

See if you can spot any really even shapes here in my painting with no uneven parts.

Pause the video and have a good look.

Well done for trying that.

Let's see Which shapes are in my painting that I made using the shape tool.

Right, the big green ball, I drew that with the shape tool.

I also drew the spade, the square shape of my spade, and also the bucket.

They both were made using the shape tool.

I also used the undo tool in this painting.

Why do you think I used it? I wonder if any of my detectives will know the answer.

Pause this video and see if you can discuss or figure out why I might have used the undo tool here.

Good thinking, detectives.

I used The undo tool to fix mistakes that I might have made while I was drawing.

Do you recognise the top symbol here? What about the second symbol? The top symbol is erase and the bottom symbol is undo.

I did not use a raise to fix mistakes in my painting.

If I had used raise, it would've covered my painting in white marks.

Undo is the safer tool as it lets you be more careful.

True or false? Undo will add white marks to your painting.

Pause the video and have a think about that.

The answer was false.

Why? pause the video and see if you can figure out the answer? Well done for giving this one a go.

Erase is the tool that leaves white marks.

Undo only goes back one step at a time so it is safer to use.

Right, we're gonna get ready to do a task now.

Your task is to paint a happy face.

You can select any tools for this task.

Did you hear the keyword there? What was my keyword? Select.

So you can select any tools for this task.

You may choose any tools in your painting programme.

Number one, fill in the tools table with your ideas of what you could use.

I'm going to show you the tools table shortly.

Then, with a partner, I want you to talk about what tools you selected for the happy face task.

Then I want you to use those tools you selected to create your happy face picture in your painting programme.

I can't wait to see what you're going to make.

All right, this is your tools table.

And for the first part of the task, I'd like you to fill in this tools table with ideas of what you could use the painting tools for.

So in the middle column where it says paint tool, I want you to write down the names of the different painting tools.

And then on the right-hand side, it says, "how I can use it." So I want you to write down your ideas of how you could use those tools in your painting.

Part two of the task is going to be sharing those ideas with a partner.

And then part three, you get to go off and make your happy face painting.

Good luck.

I will be here When you get back.

It's time to pause the video now.

Fill in your tools table, share it with a partner, and then create your happy face painting.

Off you go.

Welcome back.

I hope you enjoyed That task.

Well done for giving it a try.

This is how I filled in my tools table.

I wrote down the names of the tools.

I wrote, line tool, shape tool, fill tool, undo, and paintbrush tool.

And then in the how I can use it column, I wrote down my ideas for how I could use these tools in my painting.

I wrote that I could use the line tool for the eyebrows, the shape tool to make the face and the eyes, the fill tool to colour in, undo to fix my mistakes, and the paintbrush tool for the nose and the mouth.

The second part of the task, you had to talk about which tools you selected.

Aisha said, "The shape tool can make a circle for my face." Lucas said, "I can use the line tool to draw eyebrows." And I hope when you were talking about your painting, you used those tools and you used some of our keywords.

You might have used the word select to talk about which tools you were choosing.

This is how I painted my happy face.

I got the circle tool and drew my face, pulled it out, then I used the fill tool to colour it in.

Next, I went to the paintbrush tool and I drew in my blue eye shape, and then I added a bit more detail by using small black circles.

Then I used the paintbrush tool to draw my nose and my mouth using the undo there to fix my mistake.

And then the last detail, using the orange line tool for my eyebrows.

There we go.

The next part of our lesson is all about creating digital art in the style of Kandinsky.

Are you ready? Let's go.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian artist.

He lived from 1866 to 1944.

He used art to show his feelings and emotions.

This kind of art is called abstract art.

To create this picture, Kandinsky use different paints and crayons on paper.

What shapes can you see? What colours can you see? Pause the video here and have a chat if you've got someone nearby to chat with or have a think about what shapes and colours you can see.

Well done for giving that a go.

I can see circle shapes and I can see square shapes in this painting, and there are lots and lots of different colours, aren't there? There are so many different shades of colour as well.

How could you make this artwork digitally? Oh, did you hear a keyword there? Digitally.

Digital is one of our key words, and digital means something saved on a computer.

If we were going to create this kind of art that Kandinsky was famous for, how would we make it on a computer? What tools would you need to select in your painting programme? Pause the video and have a think about that.

Here Are some clues to help you.

Welcome back.

Good job having a think about which tools we might need to create this digital artwork.

You might have decided you don't need all of these tools, but maybe somebody else thought that they could use all of these tools.

It is up to you.

Everybody creates art in different ways.

True or false? If you use the paintbrush tool to paint circles, they would all look the same.

True or false? Pause the video and have a think about that.

The answer is false.

Why? The paintbrush tool is freehand, which means all of your circles will be uneven and unique.

Right, it's time now for our task.

Are you ready? Let's go.

The first part is to set up your painting area.

I'd like you to make a border, divide the page up into sections, and then use the fill tool to colour in your sections.

For the second part, I'd like you to paint those Kandinsky circles.

So I would like you to select a different colour for each circle.

Afterwards, I would like you to fill In the tools table to say which tools you used and how you used it.

Just like before, we've got our symbols down the side, we've got a column that says paint tool, which is where you're going to label your symbols.

And then at the end, I'd like you to write down how you use those tools.

It's time to go and create your task now.

I can't wait to see your paintings.

This is how I set up my painting area.

I use the shape tool to draw out a big black rectangle.

Then a line tool to divide that rectangle up into different sections.

Then I'm going to use my fill tool, choose a colour, and colour in my sections with the fill tool, using a different colour in each one.

This is how I created my circles.

I used a paintbrush tool, and every time I completed a circle, I got a new colour and used it to draw a smaller circle inside the first circle.

Now I've got a orange circle.

My next colour is grey.

I've got space for just one more, a yellow circle just like that.

For my tools table, I labelled the different paint tools.

So I've got line tool, shape tool, fill tool, undo, and paintbrush tool.

And then in the how I used it column, I wrote down which tools I used for my Kandinsky circles painting.

So for the line tool, I split up the page with it.

For the shape tool, I made a border, For the fill tool, I coloured in my sections.

I used undo to fix my mistakes and I used the paintbrush tool to make my circles.

Well done forgiving that task a go.

I'm sure your artworks are really beautiful and you've had some really good discussion about the kinds of tools you would use to make a digital version of an artwork.

Wow, we worked really hard today.

You have made some beautiful pieces, and I'm really proud of everybody's hard work and effort today.

Let's summarise what we've learned.

Painting programmes have lots of different digital tools.

You select a tool by clicking on it.

Undo is often a better digital tool to use than erase.

It doesn't leave white marks on your painting.

You use digital tools to create a painting in the style of Kandinsky.

The freehand paintbrush made all of your circles unique.

Thank you for joining me on this lesson today.

I really enjoyed working with you, and I hope I will see you again soon.
