Hello, everybody.

Welcome to Computing.

My name is Mrs. Franzsen.

It's really great to have you here learning with me today.

We are going to be learning all about technology.

Are you ready? Then let's get started.

By the end of this lesson today, you will be able to explain how information technology helps us.

Let's look at our keywords for today.

We're going to do my turn, your turn for this.

So that means that I'm going to say the keyword first.

Then I want you to say the keyword.

Then I want you to listen carefully while I explain the keyword, okay? So here we go, first word.

My turn, barcode, your turn.

That's great.

So a barcode is a line pattern that gives information to a computer.

Next word is quite similar.

My turn, QR code, your turn.

That's great.

So a QR code is a square pattern that gives information to a computer and there will be examples of barcodes and QR codes in this lesson.

The first part of the lesson is all about exploring how IT works in a shop.

Are you ready? Let's go.

Information technology, IT, can be found in shops.

So when I say information technology, you might hear me say it, just like that, or you might hear me say IT, which is the short version of information technology.

Can you think of how IT could be used in a shop? Pause the video here to have a think about that.

Oh, we've got a lot of pictures here.

Which information technology items can be found in a shop? Hmm.

Pause the video and have a think about which of these items might be found in a shop.

Well done for giving that a go.

So, of course, every shop is different and not every shop will have the same kinds of IT items inside it.

These items might be found in a shop.

These items are a QR code, a self-checkout machine, a barcode, a security camera, a till, a printer, a scanner, and a card reader.

These examples of information technology can all be found in a shop.

And they have some labels here, we've got barcode, which is one of our keywords.

It's a line pattern that sends information into a computer.

We've got a scanner, we've got a card reader, and we have got a till.

These items all work together.

Have you ever seen or used a self checkout machine in a shop? How did it work? You can pause the video here and have a think or maybe a discussion about that.

Most items in a shop have a barcode or QR code on them.

A barcode is a line pattern that gives information to a computer.

You often see barcode labels on food item.

In this photo, you can see that the barcode has been printed sideways because the numbers are running down underneath the barcode.

A QR code is a square pattern that gives information to a computer.

QR codes are often seen on posters.

You can see an example here on the side.

It is a poster about clean oceans and then in the bottom corner of the poster, you can see that square pattern of the QR code.

Barcodes and QR codes contain information that can be read very quickly by a computer.

Okay, let's do a check here.

What is a line pattern that gives information to a computer? Is it A, QR code, B, barcode, or C, scanner? Pause the video here to have a think about your answer.

Welcome back.

Well done for thinking about your answer.

What is a line pattern that gives information to a computer? The answer is B, a barcode.

Remember that the barcode is the line pattern that gives information to a computer.

Well done if you got that one right.

Now let's see how these devices all work together.

When you shop, the barcode is scanned by a scanner.

The scanner is connected to a till.

The till sends the information from the barcode to the main computer that all of the tills are connected to.

The main computer searches for an item that matches the information and looks up its price.

The price is sent to the till and shown on the screen.

So in this example it says pineapple, one pound 60.

The price is added to a list of items the customer is buying.

If you pay by bank card, you will use a card reader.

The card reader has a computer inside it and connects to the till.

It reads information from the bank card.

The card reader sends information to the till.

The shop's computers tell the bank to pay for the shopping.

Computers make sure the payment is correct and safe.

Let's do a check here all about IT in the shop.

Which information technology device reads the information in QR codes and barcodes? Is it A, the till, B, the scanner, or C, the printer? Pause the video here to think about what your answer would be.

Welcome back.

Well done for that thinking about this question.

Which IT device reads the information in QR codes and barcodes? The answer was B, the scanner.

Okay, we're gonna get ready for a task now.

The first part of the task is draw arrows to connect the IT devices and show how they work together.

So for this part of the task, you are drawing arrows that point at the different devices and show how they connect and work together.

You can pause this video now to work on this part of the task and I'll be here when you get back.

Well done for working on this part of the task.

Let's look at how we can connect these devices together.

So the barcode scanner sends the information to the till.

The till sends the information to the computer and then the computer sends the price back to the till and then the till sends the payment information to the card reader and then the card reader sends the banking details into the till and helps make sure the payment is safe and correct.

That was a lot of critical thinking about the IT.

Well done if you got that right.

For the second part of the task, with a partner, explain how the IT works in a shop.

Use your diagram from question one to help you.

So just like I did, you use the pictures and the arrows that you've drawn to talk to your partner about the ways that IT is connected together in the shop and how it sends information through it.

Pause the video now to work on that and I'll be here when you get back with some examples.

Welcome back.

Let's look at some ways you could have explained how the IT works in the shop.

Izzy says, "The scanner reads the barcode information and sends it to the computer in the till." Andeep says, "The till connects to another computer to search for the price.

Once it finds it, it sends the price back to the till to show on the screen." Well done for your hard work on this task.

In the second part of the lesson, you will understand how IT helps in daily life.

Information technology can do some tasks very quickly.

Instead of writing a letter and waiting for it to arrive in the post, people can use a computer to send an online message that gets there right away.

And in this graphic on the side, you can see an email has arrived on the phone that says "Orders 1st of March, receipt 18th of February." So that phone has received an email message.

Computers don't only make things faster, they can also make tasks easier.

IT helps us organise and store information neatly so it's easy to find.

Doctors use computers to keep track of patients' medical records.

IT makes it easier to check and update important information whenever you need to.

Children can use tablets to practise math scans at school or home.

I wonder if you enjoy using any devices to play games.

IT gives people tools to do their jobs or learn new things more easily.

Let's do a quick check here.

Instead of sending a letter by post, IT lets you A, send an online message, B, give a hug to a friend, C, write a postcard.

Pause the video here and think about what your answer would be.

Welcome back.

Well done for thinking about that question.

Instead of sending a letter by post, IT lets you A, send an online message.

Well done if you got that one right.

IT can make tricky tasks much faster and simpler.

In hospitals, machines with computers help doctors see inside the body using ultrasound.

At train stations, digital signs update schedules automatically so people know when the train is coming.

In this photograph here, you can see information about the trains.

So there is the time in the big numbers at the bottom.

It says first and second, saying which trains are arriving first and second at that train station.

You might notice also on the right-hand side of the sign, it says delayed and on time, so the schedules can update automatically to help people know when the trains are arriving.

Computers follow instructions accurately.

This means that they are good at avoiding mistakes.

Card readers in shops check the exact amount of money to be paid.

Traffic lights use IT to keep the lights changing safely and on time.

IT can store a huge amount of information in a very small space.

Smartphones can save all your photos, videos, and phone numbers.

Hospitals use computers to keep lots of medical information safely.

IT keeps information ready to use when needed.

Let's do a check here.

True or false.

IT is only used to make things faster.

Pause the video here and think about your answer.

Welcome back.

Well done for working on that question.

IT is only used to make things faster.

The answer is false.

Why? IT has many benefits including making tasks more accurate, safer, and easier, such as organising schedules or working with information.

Well done if you got that one right.

Let's work on a new task now.

What kinds of information technology makes life easier in a shop? I want you to think of three different examples and write one sentence for each, and there are pictures here to give you some ideas.

It's time to pause the video now to go and work on this task and I'll be here with some examples when you get back.

Welcome back.

Well done for all of your hard work in this task, thinking about how IT can make life easier in a shop.

Let's look at some answers here.

You might have said, the shop can send online messages to customers.

Security cameras can keep the shop safe.

Shop information is organised on a computer.

Customers use card readers to pay for shopping.

Barcode scanners are used to scan shopping, so we can use IT in lots of ways to make life easier in a shop.

Well done for all of your hard work on that task.

We've come to the end of the lesson.

Let's summarise our learning today.

Information technology is used in many places.

Shops use IT to keep track of what is sold.

Scanners can read information from barcodes and QR codes.

The information is used to search the computer that all of the tills are connected to in a shop.

IT can save people time make it easier to do difficult jobs and help keep people safe.

Thank you for joining me for this lesson today.

I hope you've enjoyed learning with me and I hope to see you again soon.
