Hello everybody, this is Franzsen here.
Welcome to Computing.
It's really great to see you.
Today we are going to be learning about technology in school.
Are you ready? Let's get started.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify information technology in school.
Let's go through our keywords for today.
We are going to use my turn, your turn for this.
That means first I'm going to say the keyword, then I would like you to say the keyword, and then I want you to listen carefully while I explain the keyword, okay? Here we go, first word.
My turn, computer, your turn.
That's great, so a computer is a machine that can follow a programme.
Next word, my turn.
Interactive.
Your turn.
Something is interactive when it reacts when you use it.
Next word, my turn.
Purpose.
Your turn.
That's great, purpose is why something is used or what it is used for.
In the first part of this lesson, you will be identifying information technology at school.
Are you ready? Let's go.
Information technology, IT, is a computer or things that are made to work with a computer.
So in my image here we have got a desktop computer, a tablet and a laptop, and all of these devices we call computers.
Information technology can help us to collect, share and use information.
Let's do a check here.
It says, "True or false? A smartwatch is information technology." True or false? Now to answer this you need to think about what we consider information technology.
Pause the video here and think about your answer.
The answer was true.
Why? There is a computer inside the watch that makes it work.
That makes it information technology.
Well done if you got that one right.
It's important to notice the difference between devices that use computers and those that do not, so let's look at the lamp as an example.
So a lamp is powered by electricity, but it is not information technology.
This is because the lamp does not have a computer or connect to a computer.
So even though it's powered by electricity and it switches on, it doesn't make it information technology.
Let's do another check here.
A light switch is information technology, true or false? Pause the video here to think about your answer.
The answer was false.
Why? Even though the light switch connects to electricity, there is no computer inside it and it does not connect to a computer, so a light switch is not information technology.
Well done if you got that one right.
Your school might have devices that are interactive.
Interactive is one of our keywords.
Interactive means that the device reacts when you use it and it is a part of information technology.
There will either be a computer in it or it will connect to a computer.
Some classrooms have interactive whiteboards.
The whiteboard is actually a digital screen or it has a computer inside it.
So we've got two examples here.
The first one says, "A whiteboard with no computer inside does not react to you." So while you might draw on the whiteboard, nothing happens to the whiteboard, it doesn't react to what you have drawn on it.
But an interactive whiteboard reacts to what you do on it, so when you use your pen on it or you tap on it with a finger, the whiteboard does something, it reacts to what you do.
Okay, we are going to get to be detectives today in the task.
The task says, "Look around your learning space for information technology.
You can also use this photograph." And that's what I'm going to do.
So searching around your area or in the photograph, I want you to record all of the information technology that you can find.
You can pause the video here or on the next slide and I'll be here when you get back to see what kinds of information technology you could find.
Welcome back, let's see what information technology you found.
Now you might have a list that you wrote down, or what I did is that I labelled the information technology that I could spot in the picture.
So well done for finding all of the items that you have.
Let's see, my first one is that I noticed there was a screen there on the table, so I've labelled the first IT device that I found, the screen.
Right next to it, that black box is the desktop computer, and the screen was connecting to the desktop computer with a cable.
I also found the keyboard, and right next to the keyboard, can you see it in the photo? We've got the mouse there, so the mouse and the keyboard have got a cable that connects to the computer.
A bit further away there, up at the top there is a speaker that's been mounted on the wall.
You might even, if you've got really good eagle eyes, be able to spot the cable that is stretching out of the top and coming around the side of the wall there.
That speaker will connect to a computer as well.
And then on the wall in the middle there we've got a big interactive whiteboard, and that whiteboard will have a computer inside it and it will connect to another computer, like the teacher's computer there on the side.
Well done if you spotted all of these items. In the next part of the lesson, you will be able to recognise the purpose of school information technology.
Jacob says, "At my school, we use tablets to help us with our learning." Hmm, I wonder if at your school you have technology that you use to help with learning.
How do you use technology at school? You can pause the video here to have a think about that question.
At school, information technology is used for different purposes.
Did you hear that word? That's one of our keywords as well, purposes.
Students use IT to help them learn and teachers use IT to help them teach.
You can see in the photo here that this person is using a tablet and they are looking at a close-up picture of the moon.
Andeep says, "My teacher uses the interactive whiteboard to show us videos." Who else could use information technology in a school? We've talked about students, that's children.
We've talked about teachers.
Would there be other people at the school who could use information technology? Pause the video here to have a think about that.
People who work at schools use information technology for different purposes.
They use IT to do work, to keep track of information, and to talk to other people.
Some schools have security cameras to record what is happening and keep everyone safe.
Maybe you've seen that at your school.
Some schools use programmes on computers to keep track of all the information about their students.
Some information technology devices can be used for more than one purpose.
Now let's look at this tablet in the photo.
So a tablet can be used for playing games, for talking to other people, for doing work, and for taking photos.
I'm sure that you could even think of another reason that we might use a tablet.
A tablet can be used for many different purposes.
True or false? All information technology in a school is used for learning.
True or false? Pause the video here and think about what your answer might be.
The answer was false.
Why? Some information technology is used for learning.
IT is also used for many different purposes.
Well done if you got that one right.
Okay, let's get ready for another task now.
The task says, number one, "Sort the IT devices into groups, based on what the device is used for.
You can put the same device into more than one group." So here are the IT devices for the task.
We've got computer, interactive whiteboard, tablet, projector, photocopier, digital camera, speaker, and printer.
And you've got three different groups here that you can sort those devices into.
The first group is called "To help you do a job." So you might look at a device and think, "Oh, that device is helpful for doing something like work." Then your device would go in that group.
The second group says, "To talk to people." Now we use our devices in lots of ways to send messages and communicate with other people, and if you look at a device and think it could go in the to talk to people group, it's going to go in the middle.
The last group says, "To have fun." Now we can use devices for lots of fun activities as well, so a device that is used for fun will go in the last section there.
You can pause the video now to work on that part of the task and I'll be here when you get back.
Well done for working on that part of the task.
Let's see where you could have put those devices.
Now you might have put your devices in slightly different places than me and that's fine, but I'm gonna give you some examples here.
So in the to help you do a job group, I've got printer, interactive whiteboard, digital camera, projector, and photocopier.
In the to talk to people group, I put the speaker, so you can hear the other person, the computer and the tablet.
And then in the final group, to have fun, I put the tablet, the speaker, the computer, and the interactive whiteboard.
Well done for all of your hard work on this part of the task.
In part two of the task, with a partner, choose an information technology device that is used in schools.
So you might want to choose a tablet or an interactive whiteboard or another interactive device that you choose.
It's up to you.
And then, with your partner, I want you to go through these three questions about the device.
I want you to read the questions and then talk about them together.
The questions are, what would life be like without this device? How would you feel if the device was no longer available? What would you use instead? It's time to pause the video here and work on this part of the task, and when you're finished you can come back and I will give you an example of how someone else answered this task.
Welcome back, well done for your effort on this task.
Let's look at what someone else said.
Aisha says, "Without tablets, I couldn't draw digital pictures or play learning games.
I would feel a bit disappointed to not use a tablet.
I would use paper and pencils instead, but it wouldn't be as quick or as fun." I wonder if you said some similar things to Aisha, or maybe you said something different.
You worked really hard in this lesson and we learned quite a lot.
Let's summarise our learning for today.
Information technology is a computer or something that works with a computer.
Some information technology is interactive.
For example, interactive whiteboards in classrooms. IT can be used for different purposes by people who work at schools.
If we did not have IT in schools, then it might make our work more difficult or less fun.
Thank you for joining me in my lesson today, I really enjoyed learning with you and I hope to see you again soon.
