Hello, thanks for joining me.

My name's Mr. Roy Ballam and today's lesson is called "Family food." So what are we going to learn or be able to do? Well, by the end of this lesson, you're going to be able to plan a salad for your family.

That sounds exciting, doesn't it? So we've got some keywords that I want you to think about when we go through today's lesson, and the first one is salad.

Well, we are gonna plan a salad for our family, aren't we? And often this is a cold dish with a mix of raw and cooked vegetables with a dressing, but it can contain lots of other things and we're gonna find out more in this lesson.

The other word is family, and this is a group of two or more people who live together.

And the last keyword is healthy, and this is being free from illness or injury.

So let's get started with the first part of the lesson, shall we? About why we eat what we do.

Now we all eat food from different reasons and I'm sure the food I like will be different from the food that you like, for example.

Let's have a look at what these peoples say.

"I like fruit for breakfast." "It depends on the time." "At a party, I might have some cake." "I have a Sunday roast, it's tradition." So these people are eating different foods for different reasons.

So why do you eat the food that you do? Can you let me know? There are lots of different reasons why we eat different types of foods.

And most of us usually eat three times a day.

So we eat breakfast in the morning, for example, or we have lunch at lunchtime and then a meal in the evening.

So what do you have for breakfast? Can you name foods that you might have? How about lunch or an evening meal? I'm sure many of you have lots of different types of foods and there'll be different reasons why you have them.

One of the reasons we have food is 'cause we like it and we don't have other foods 'cause we don't like them.

So we have different likes and dislikes.

What food do you like? What's your favourite food? Can you tell me why? How about food that you dislike? Is that more tricky? I know some of you probably like lots of different types of foods.

Let's just try and think of foods that we like and dislike and tell me why.

And sometimes we eat different food for a special occasion, and they might be things like a birthday, or perhaps Diwali, or perhaps Chinese New Year, and on these three occasions we'd eat different types of foods.

So what other special occasion can you name? Can you think of any? Let me know.

I bet you're all coming up with some brilliant answers, aren't you? Some great ideas, well done.

So let's see whether you've been listening, shall we? So which of these foods would usually be eaten for breakfast? Is it A, B, or C? Yes, that's right.

It's A, isn't it? Cornflakes, well done.

So people in different countries might eat different foods as well.

So for example, in China, in Italy, Nigeria, or the UK.

What are these foods? They all look quite different, don't they? Well, the first one is stir-fried vegetables cooked in a wok.

What's the second one? I bet many of you know this one, don't you? Yes, it's pizza.

So sometimes people have pizzas to eat.

And in Nigeria, a very popular and traditional dish is jollof rice.

And the UK, well, it could be a roast dinner.

So do you know a food from another country? What ones can you come up with? Can you let me know? Have you come up with lots of different ideas? I bet you have.

So remember, people in different countries can eat different foods, but sometimes we have a variety of foods from around the world.

Who we live with as well might change what we eat and we might live with parents or grandparents or other people and that might change the sorts of foods that we have.

It also might be where we live, that might change the food we have.

So we might be in a city or perhaps in the countryside.

So Izzy here is saying that she lives with her dad and he likes to cook food from Jamaica, so that will change the sorts of foods that she has.

It might also be that your family culture or traditions might change what you eat too.

So for example, it could be where you live, which country.

Or perhaps different traditions like Christmas, for example.

Or perhaps it's a family recipe that's been handed down through generations.

So many people have different food traditions.

Do you have any? What happens in your family? So there are lots of different traditions that families have.

So let's see whether you've been listening, shall we? People eat the same food.

Is that true or false? That's false, isn't it? And why is that? Well, people eat different types of foods because they have different likes and dislikes and also different traditions too.

Well done if you got that one correct.

So here's a task for you here, and Aisha wants to know about the food that you eat.

So she wants you to name three foods that you eat a lot and she also wants to know why you eat them.

So come up with three ideas, pause the video, and we'll come back to see what you've got.

So remember, I eat something because something.

Good luck and we'll be back very soon.

How did you get on? Let's look at an example, shall we? So here's one example.

So it could be I eat carrots because they taste great, or perhaps I eat pasta because my family loves spaghetti, or lastly, I eat oranges because they are juicy.

There are so many different types of foods and I'm sure lots of different reasons that you might eat them, so well done for whatever you've come up with.

You're doing great today.

Let's move on to the second part of the lesson, which is all about food for health.

So we need to eat different types of foods and we need lots of different types of food and drinks to be healthy.

And like Sofia's saying here, she likes to be healthy so she can play and learn.

So to be healthy, we should eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

That's right, we need to get our five a day.

Do you remember? We need to eat at least five different types of fruit and vegetables every day.

So let's see whether you've been listening.

True or false? We need to eat a few fruit and vegetables each day.

Is that true or false? Yes, that's false, isn't it? And why is that? Well, we need to eat lots of different fruits and vegetables.

We need five a day.

Brilliant work, everybody, well done.

I'm so pleased with your progress today.

And also to be healthy we should have foods like these, things like potatoes or rice, or perhaps pasta or couscous.

So are lots of different types of foods that we can have.

Have you had any of these in a salad before? We also need some foods like these, so things like a soy drink or milk, or perhaps cheese or some yoghourt.

And you could add cheese to a salad, for example.

And we should also have other foods like these, perhaps beans or different types of fish or eggs or meat.

How about these in a salad? Have you seen them? Well, I've definitely seen an egg salad.

Maybe a chicken salad, like a chicken caesar.

And I've had tuna fish and I've had different types of beans too.

So we could have all of these in different types of salads, well done.

So let's have another check, shall we? So which food should we eat some of each day? Is it A, fruit and vegetables; B, beans, fish, and eggs; or C, cakes and biscuits? Yes, that's right, it's B, isn't it? It's beans, fish, and eggs.

We should have some of these each day, well done.

So here's a task for you here and I want you to help Andeep and Izzy, and they're going to sort these foods into things that you need to eat lots of or some of.

So what have they got here? They've got cherries, milk, bananas, eggs, and carrots.

So which of these should be lots of and which of these should be some of? Pause the video, have a go, and we'll look at an example afterwards.

Good luck to you.

So how did you get on? Let's look at an example, shall we? So we need to eat lots of these, so things like cherries, bananas, and carrots, fruits and vegetables.

And we need to eat some of the milk and the eggs, well done.

Let's move on to the last part of the lesson, which is all about planning a salad for your family.

So we know that people like and dislike different foods, and knowing what people like and dislike can help us plan to cook.

So what food do you like? Hmm, there's quite a few.

And what food does your family like? So what food your family like might be different to what you like because we've all got different likes and dislikes.

So, true or false? People dislike the same food.

That's right, it's false, isn't it? And why? Well, people like and dislike different food, well done.

Now your family might like or dislike food because of how it looks, perhaps how it smells, perhaps how it tastes.

So what Sam's saying here, it looks colourful.

Or perhaps it smells sweet, or tastes sour.

Oh, could you imagine that? So we can use our senses to say whether we like or dislike a food.

Using our eyes, our nose, and our mouth.

So when we're planning a salad, we need to think about the sorts of foods that we might use, and a salad can include lots of different types of things.

So for example, it could include lots of different types of vegetables, or perhaps even fruit, for example.

So what vegetables does your family like? Can you name them for me? Are there any on the screen now? And a salad can also include things like potatoes, or perhaps pasta, rice, or couscous.

Have you had any of these in your salad before? They look amazing, don't they? Some wonderful potato salad, some lovely pasta salad, a rice salad and a couscous salad.

I hope you've had some of these before and really enjoyed them.

What else can our salad include? Well, it might include things like beans, for example.

Can you name these beans? Yes, that's right, these are red kidney beans, and these could be added to a salad.

Or perhaps things like tuna fish could be added to your salad too, and this is from a can.

Or perhaps things like boiled egg, for example.

That would be nice in a salad.

Or perhaps things like a meat, like chicken, for example.

A roasted chicken could go in my salad too.

Or perhaps pieces of cheese.

That would be delicious in my salad, wouldn't it? So does your family like any of these in their salad? What do they like or dislike? Can you let me know? Also, salads can be presented in lots of different ways, so let's have a look at some examples, shall we? Wow, look at these here.

Don't they look amazing? Let's have a look at these together, shall we? The first one to the left, wow, I like the stripes.

And the second one, that's really attractive, I like the layers that are going across.

And the third one, wow, that's a really impressive stack, and I like the little cheese or the toast in the background, like little triangles.

And lastly, that salad there with the chopsticks, that just looks amazing, looks lovely and fresh with lots of greenery in the background.

And Andeep is saying he likes the look of these salads.

Well, I do too.

Do you have a favourite? Can you let me know? So which of these ingredients would not be in a salad? Is it A, B, or C? Yes, that's right, it would be C, isn't it? We wouldn't have things like sweets in a salad, would we? But we would have things like vegetables or some cheese.

Well done if you got that correct.

So I've got a task here for you, and this is where I want you to plan your salad for your family based on the food that they like.

And I want to give your salad five different layers.

So those layers could be things like different types of vegetables, or perhaps different types of fruit.

Or you could have things like potatoes, rice, or pasta, or perhaps some cheese, and maybe a lovely tasty dressing on the top.

But I want you to think about the foods that your family like, and then come up with ideas that they'll really enjoy your salad.

So pause the video, get creative, think about all the different types of ingredients you could use, and layer them up and we'll come back and look at an example together very soon.

Good luck to you.

Okay, how did you get on? I bet you've been super creative, haven't you? Let's look at just one example that you could have done.

So for example, here, they start at the bottom with some rice.

Hmm, a lovely rice salad.

And then they've got slices of cucumber, and then they've got tomatoes, boiled egg and cheese.

Oh, perhaps they're gonna put a dressing on the top too.

But you can see here they've used lots of different sorts of ingredients based on the foods that their family like.

I bet you've come up with some really creative ideas.

Congratulations to you all.

I really hope you can make it for your family.

Well, I hope you've enjoyed the lesson today all around family food, thinking about what our families like to eat, including ourselves, and we've gone through so much and learned so much too.

Let's have a quick summary, shall we? So the first thing is that we eat foods for different reasons, many different reasons, and that we might eat different food during the day or perhaps for a special occasion.

And to be healthy, we need a variety of different foods.

Do you remember things like five a day? And we've also been through that knowing what our family likes and dislikes can help us plan to make a salad too, and you've come up with some really creative ideas for that.

So I hope you've enjoyed today's lesson and you've been super creative.

Well done for all your hard work and I hope to see you again very soon for another cooking and nutrition lesson.

Thanks a lot, bye.
