Hello everybody, my name's Mr. Ballam.

Thanks ever so much for joining my lesson today, and today It's all about making a stripy salad pot.

Well, let's get started, shall we? So what are we going to learn? Well, by the end of this lesson, you'll be able to make a stripy salad pot.

Shall we say it together? I can make a stripy salad pot, well done.

So here's some keywords which we're gonna be going through today in the lesson, and I want you to listen out for them during the lesson and I want you to remember them, because we're gonna be using them quite a lot.

The first one is the word stripy.

What does that mean to you? Oh, I bet you can imagine lots of different pictures in your mind for stripy, but this is going to be layers of something, like ingredients, like a stripy salad pot.

The next word is peeling, and this is where we remove the skin of vegetables or fruit, and we're going to be peeling a carrot.

That sounds exciting.

And the last word is grating.

And this is where we cut food into smaller pieces by rubbing it on a grater.

So we're going to be peeling and we're going to be grating to make our stripy salad pot, well done.

So let's get started with the first part of the lesson, which is all about cooking equipment.

Now there are lots of different types of pieces of cooking equipment.

You may have seen some in the kitchen.

And they've all got different types of jobs.

Look at these.

What's Alex saying? "What is this called?" Now these look different, but they do the same job.

What do you think it's called? A vegetable peeler, that's right.

It's called a vegetable peeler, and there's two different types here.

What's Alex saying? "What is it used for?" What do you think it's used for, a vegetable peeler? Can you tell me? Yes, that's right.

It's to remove the skin of food, like carrots.

So we're going to peel the skin away from the carrots using the vegetable peeler.

Well done if you got that right.

"What's this called?" Sam is asking.

Hmm, that looks familiar, what do you think? Yes, it's called a grater.

And what do you think it's used for? Yes, it's to grate food like carrots or cheese, to make the food into smaller pieces.

I think we're going to be using one in this lesson.

So that's the grater, we use a grater to grate food.

Now let's see if you've been listening, shall we? So which of these do you use to grate cheese? Is it A, B, or C? Let's have a look, shall we? The answer is A, that's right.

We use a grater to grate cheese.

Well done if you got that one correct.

Now what's Jacob asking? "What is this called?" Look at the piece of equipment.

What do you think it's called? Yes, Lucas is telling us, it's called a knife.

This is a type of knife.

And what do we use a knife for? Yes, so that we can cut food into strips or pieces.

So we use a knife for cutting.

And we need to be careful with a knife because it's sharp.

And what is this called? Looks unusual, doesn't it? What do you think? Yes, it's called a chopping board.

And what do we use this for? I know I've used one before.

What do you think it's used for? Yes, it protects the worktop.

And when we grate or peel or cut things, we put those on top of the chopping board and it protects the worktop, well done.

Whoa, I think I know what this one's called.

What do you think it's called? Can you tell me? Yes, it's a spoon.

And what do we use a spoon for? Yes, we can measure with it and we can mix with it, but sometimes we eat with it as well, don't we? Like if we're having cereal or some soup.

So that's called a spoon.

It's got lots of different uses.

So let's see if you've been listening, shall we? So what is a spoon used for? Is it A, to grate or peel; B, to measure or mix; or C, to cut or slice? That's right, it's B.

We use a spoon to measure or mix, well done.

Now I've got a task here for you, and I'll bet you'll be brilliant at it.

Now I want you to help the three pupils here and I want you to think about what equipment they should use.

So the first one is Laura and she's saying, "I need to grate the cheese." So what should she use? Then we've got Jun and he's saying, "I need to peel the carrot." And lastly, we've got Lucas.

"I need to cut the lettuce." So what equipment should they use? Good luck, pause the video, and we'll come back shortly together.

Let's see how you got on, shall we? So for Laura, she's going to grate the cheese with the? That's right, with the cheese grater.

And Jun? Yes, he's going to peel the carrot with a peeler.

And that means Lucas, that's right, he's going to cut the lettuce with a knife, well done.

So now let's move on to the second part of the lesson, which is all about making my stripy salad pot.

Ooh, I can't wait.

So to make our stripy salad pot, we will be.

Peeling, do you remember? So peeling, we're going to peel the skin away from the carrot.

We're going to peel the carrot.

And we need to be careful when we do this because the peeler is sharp and we don't want any accidents, do we? And we always need to make sure, when we're peeling, we peel away from ourselves, away, not towards ourselves, and that's so that we're safe and secure, well done.

We're also going to be measuring, and we're gonna be measuring using a spoon, and we're going to measure the sweetcorn.

Hmm, that sweetcorn looks tasty, doesn't it? Let's have a quick check, shall we? So, true or false? We need to be careful using a vegetable peeler because it is sharp.

And that's true, and why? Well, a vegetable peeler is sharp and we need to be careful to prevent accidents.

Well done if you got that correct.

You're doing really well today.

So what else are we going to do to make our stripy salad pot? Well, we're going to be cutting.

Can you remember what we're going to be cutting with, which piece of equipment? Yes, we're going to be cutting the lettuce, Alex.

Ah, we're going to use a knife and we need to be careful because the knife is sharp.

So we're gonna be cutting the lettuce with a knife on a chopping board.

What else are we going to be doing? We're going to be grating.

We're going to be grating the carrot.

And you can see here they're holding the grater on a chopping board.

So we hold the grater on the chopping board and we grate slowly down the grater.

We don't have to go lots and lots and lots of times really fast, just nice and slowly.

And we're going to be grating the carrot and the cheese.

Shall we have a look at a video to see someone grating and how they're doing it? Let's have a quick look, shall we? So they're holding the grater nice and firmly on the chopping board, and they're rubbing the grater nice and slowly down the grater to get all the bits grated nicely.

And then they're going to pick it up and we can see the grated carrots.

And of course we need to remember that the grater is sharp, so we need to make sure we work really safely.

So let's have a quick check, shall we? So which of these is sharp? Is it A, B, or C? That's right, it's B, isn't it? It's a grater, the grater is sharp, so we need to be careful when we're using it, well done.

So what else are we going to be doing to make our stripy salad pot? Well, we're going to be layering, we're going to put one layer in the pot one at a time, so we're gonna build them up.

Shall we have a quick look together? So here is one layer of sweetcorn.

And the second layer, what's that? Can you tell me? Yes, that's lettuce, isn't it? We've cut the lettuce.

And the third layer? Ooh, that looks like the grated carrot.

The carrot that we grated.

And the other layer? Ooh, that's the cheese, the grated cheese on top of our stripy salad pot.

It looks delicious, doesn't it? And it makes stripes.

A stripy salad pot.

Now in the UK we throw away a lot of food that could be eaten, and that costs money and is not good for the planet.

So when we cook, we shouldn't waste food.

To reduce food waste, we can do lots of different things.

So we can use everything when cooking.

So when we're grating our carrot for our salad, use all of it.

We can save food for another time, so sometimes we put it into containers and we might put it in the fridge or in the freezer.

Or we might use leftovers, so use the food that we have one day the next day.

Or perhaps we can compost different peelings so when we're peeling our carrots we can use the peelings for our compost.

And as an example, we could use leftover pasta in our salad.

That would be nice, wouldn't it? Hmm, another layer.

So let's see if you've been listening, shall we? What can we do to waste less food? Is it A, throw away food; B, buy lots of food to use; or C, save food for another time? Yes, that's right.

It's C, isn't it? We can save the food for another time.

So now here's the main task, which I'm sure you've been looking forward to, and you're going to be making a stripy salad pot.

So before you get cooking, there's a few things I want you to do.

So if you've got long hair, I want you to tie up your long hair.

I want you to remove your jumper, make sure your hands are washed, and put on a nice clean apron.

And you also need to get your ingredients and equipment ready.

And when you're cooking, three things to think about.

I want you to be safe and hygienic, that's to be clean.

I want you to think about your food skills, so all the things that you're going to be doing, and do it really safely.

So for example, when you're grating or cutting.

And lastly, do not waste food.

Do you remember? We shouldn't waste food.

So now let's have a look at the ingredients and equipment and the method.

So here's the ingredients you need and here's the equipment you need.

So you might wanna pause the video while you get these.

And here's the method.

So I want you to follow it step by step to make your delicious stripy salad pots.

Pause the video as you're working and then come back soon to see how you've got on, good luck.

Okay, so how did you get on? Does it look good? I bet it does.

I bet it will taste brilliant as well.

So let's see what you've done to be successful to make your stripy salad pot.

Well, first of all, we peeled the carrot, didn't we? We did it safely using a vegetable peeler on a chopping board.

Then we grated the carrot and we held the grater down on the chopping board and grated safely.

We then grated the cheese as well.

We then cut the lettuce into thin strips using our, that's right, our knife on the chopping board.

And then we measured the sweetcorn using our spoon, well done.

And then we arranged everything into layers to make stripes.

Brilliant, look at the picture here.

Does yours look like this? I bet yours looks even better, doesn't it? Well, I really hope you've enjoyed making this stripy salad pot.

We've learned so much as well, haven't we? Like for example, we know that a vegetable peeler is used to peel carrots.

We know that a grater is used to grate things like carrots and cheese.

And we know that a knife is used to cut lettuce and that a spoon is used to measure the sweetcorn and that the ingredients were in layers, making a stripy salad pot.

And lastly, we've learned that we shouldn't waste food.

And that's really important, isn't it? It saves us money and it's good for the planet too.

Well, I hope you've enjoyed today and I hope you come back very soon for another cooking and nutrition lesson.

Thanks ever so much, bye.
