Hello everybody.
My name's Mr. Balaam.
Thanks very much for choosing this lesson.
And today, this lesson is called my favourite fruit and veg.
I wonder what yours is.
I know what mine is.
Let's get started, shall we? So what are we gonna learn today? Well, by the end of the lesson, we're gonna be able to describe the look and taste of different fruits and vegetables.
That sounds really exciting, doesn't it? Should we get started? I've got some key words here for you.
I want you to think about these through the lesson.
Try and think how many times we talk about them during the lesson today.
And the first one is appearance, and that's what something looks like.
So we use our eyes, don't we, to look for the appearance of something.
The next one is smell, and this is to detect scent or a smell with your nose.
The third one is taste, and this is the sensation of flavour.
So when we put something in our mouth, we can taste the flavour of a food.
And lastly, texture, and that's how something feels.
So you can detect the texture with your fingers, but we're going to detect the texture with our mouth, with our tongue and inside the mouth.
So we're going to look at texture of food.
So let's get started.
The first part of the lesson is all around the fruit and veg that I like.
Now, we all need to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, don't we? They're really important for us, and we need to eat lots of different types, not the same ones all the time.
And we also know that most people don't eat enough fruit and vegetables, and we all need to eat five a day.
We need to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
So here's a quick check for you just to see whether you've been listening.
Is this true or false, we only need to eat a few fruit and vegetables? Well, that's false, isn't it? And why? Well, most people don't eat enough fruits and vegetables, and we need to eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
We need to eat five a day every day.
Well done if you got that correct.
Now, there are lots of different types of fruits and vegetables.
You can see some in the picture here, can't you? And they all look, smell, and taste different.
Just look at all the colours there, for example.
And these are all from plants, so they grow.
They're plants.
Now, some fruits and vegetables we get are from the UK, from where we live.
Here's just a few examples here.
Do you know what they're called? Should we go through them quickly together? Well, the first one, I'm sure you've got this, it's an apple, isn't it? The second one, the orange one, carrots.
Well done.
The third one, that's a bit more tricky, isn't it? They are blackberries.
Well done if you got that one correct.
And the last one is lettuce, and there's also other things there too.
Let's have a quick look, shall we? Oh, there's tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions and radish.
Well done if you got that correct.
So these sorts of things come from the UK.
What about fruits and vegetables from around the world? Let's have a quick look, shall we? Wow, I think I know what those are.
Yeah, I've had some of those.
Hmm, I'm not sure about that one.
Ooh, I don't know what that one is.
That's unfamiliar to me.
Should we look at the names together? Well, yes, that's right.
The first one's bananas.
We know what those are.
Pineapple.
Well done.
Mango.
Well done if you got that correct.
That's delicious.
And the last one is called, anybody? Okra.
Well done if you got that one correct.
That one's much more tricky.
But some people eat it and some people don't.
But we all need a variety of different types of fruit and vegetables, so it's always good to try something new.
Now, probably we'd like and dislike different types of fruits and vegetables.
We're all different, aren't we? And this can be for different reasons.
So for example, it might be the appearance of it.
I like the look of pineapples.
They look great, don't they? Or it might be the smell of something.
So when you pick up a food and smell it, you might like it, you might dislike it, but we're all different.
So the appearance is how something looks.
So that's a good word, isn't it? Appearance, it's how something looks.
Other reasons could include its taste, so how something tastes, or it might be its texture.
Do you remember these key words that we looked at at the beginning of the lesson? Now, the texture, do you remember, is how it feels particularly in the mouth.
So it might be how it feels on the tongue, or it might be inside the mouth.
So that's texture, how it feels.
And for the appearance, the smell, the taste, and the texture, we can use good describing words, can't we, to talk about whether we like or dislike something.
So what's this? What's Alex saying? He's saying, "I like the appearance of this fruit." Wow, I wonder what that is.
So why? What is it? Ah, he likes it because it looks spiky, and it's called a dragon fruit.
What a brilliant fruit that is.
Have any of you had that before? Let's have a quick check again, shall we? So look at this key word.
The appearance is how a food A, looks, B, smells or C, tastes? Well done.
It's A, looks.
So the appearance is how a food looks.
Well done.
Let's see what Laura is saying here.
She's saying, "I like the smell of strawberries." Why? Because they smell sweet, and she likes them on her cereal, as we can see there in the photo, can't we? So that's the smell of food.
Izzy likes the taste of celery.
Can you see it in the photo there? But why? Well, she likes it because it tastes strong, a bit like onions.
Well, Izzy loves celery, doesn't she? And what about Andeep? He's saying he dislikes the texture of Brussels sprouts.
I wonder why that is.
Why? Ah, I found out here.
It's because his dad cooks them until they're too soft.
He probably likes them a little bit more crunchy, like me.
So we like and dislike different foods depending on the appearance, the smell, the taste, and the texture.
Well done.
So what fruit and vegetables do you like? Hmm, I bet you can name quite a few, can't you? And why do you like them? Ooh, that's a tough one, isn't it? Have a think.
Have a talk in the class and see which ones you like and why you like them.
So I've got an little task here for you.
And firstly, I want you to name a fruit that you like and a fruit that you dislike, and I want you to say why.
So I like something because something.
And secondly, I want you to name a vegetable that you like and a vegetable that you dislike, so again, saying why.
Good luck.
Pause the video and we'll come back and have a look at some examples together very soon.
Right, let's see how you got on, shall we? Let's look at a couple of examples together.
So the first one could be like this.
So the fruit that you like or dislike.
So example here is, "I like oranges because they are juicy." Do you ever imagine an orange and you're eating it and it's very juicy? That would be a good reason, wouldn't it? What about the dislike? "I dislike pears because they can be hard." Imagine eating a hard pear.
That would be quite tricky, wouldn't it? I wouldn't like that, would you? Though some people do like hard fruit and that's okay too.
What about the second one about naming a vegetable that you like or dislike? What's the example here? So I like carrots because of the colour and taste.
Probably 'cause they look orange and they're sweet.
And they dislike mushrooms because they can be slimy.
Wow.
So what did you put? I bet you had some really good examples, didn't you? Well done.
So now we're gonna move on to the second part of the lesson, which is all about tasting different fruit and veg.
So we use our senses to describe how our food looks, smells and tastes.
And our senses include sight with our eyes, smell with our nose, (sniffs) and taste with our mouth.
So those are our senses, sight, smell, and taste.
And we also, do remember, we use our mouth to detect texture as well.
So let's check that you've been listening to that.
So what do you use to taste? Is it A, B or C? Well done.
That's right.
It's C, isn't it? We use our mouth to taste.
We don't use our nose, do we? We don't use our eyes, we use our mouth.
Well done.
So we can describe the appearance of fruits and vegetables, and we can talk about their colour, their shape, and their size, for example.
Wow, look at these.
How would you describe their appearance? Hmm, the apple is round.
It's red, but it's also got some yellow spots.
The sweetcorn, well, that looks bumpy, doesn't it? Yellow.
And look at all those other fruits and vegetables there.
The onions and the courgettes.
Wow.
And there's some radishes.
There's lots of words that you could use, aren't there, to describe the appearance.
So can you describe the appearance of these fruits and vegetables? How did you get on? I bet you came up with some good describing words, didn't you? But we can also describe the smell of different fruits and vegetables.
Here's some examples.
So how would you describe these? And we can use different words.
So a smell might be sweet, it might be fruity, or it might be strong or mild.
Just look at these foods here, how would you describe them? And we can also describe the taste of different fruits and vegetables too.
So look at these here, how would you describe these? Don't they look amazing? I mean, I love the colours, but I wonder how they taste.
So have you tasted any of these before? Can you describe how they taste? I bet some of you have.
I bet they tasted amazing, didn't they? And lastly, we can describe the texture of fruit and vegetables, and this is how something feels in the mouth.
So for example, it could be crunchy or smooth.
Imagine that in your mouth, crunchy or smooth.
They're really good words, aren't they? Good describing words.
Wow, look at these examples.
Can you describe the texture of these foods? And there are lots of words that we can use to describe foods.
So for example, it might be soft, might be hard, might be crispy or creamy.
There are lots of words that we could use to describe the texture of fruit and vegetables.
Let's have another quick check, shall we? So, true or false, crispy and crunchy are words to describe texture? That's true, isn't it? And why would that be? Well, foods have different textures, some are crispy and some are crunchy.
Well done if you got that correct.
You're doing brilliantly today.
I bet you all really love your fruit and veg, don't you? Okay, I've got a task for you here, and it's a delicious task.
So with your teacher, you're going to try and taste six different types of fruit and vegetables.
And what I want you to do is to decide whether you like them or dislike them, but say why.
So pause the video, have a good taste of the different fruit and vegetables, and we'll come back and look at some examples very soon.
Bye! Right, so how did you get on? Let's look at some examples together, shall we? So I tried some broccoli and I liked broccoli.
Why? Well, it was bright green and I liked the shape of it too.
Looked like a little tree.
The other one was a carrot, and yes, I like carrots, and I liked them because they were crunchy and sweet.
And beansprouts, mm, I didn't like as much because they were quite hard.
So I liked some and I disliked one.
How about some more examples? Pineapple.
I usually really like pineapple, but this one wasn't very sweet and it was quite hard.
But sometimes I do like pineapple when it's sweet and soft.
Another one we had was kiwi fruit.
Have you seen a kiwi fruit before? I think they're lovely and I liked kiwi fruit.
I liked it 'cause it had a furry skin and I liked all the seeds on the inside too.
It smelled really good.
And lastly, a banana.
Yes, I love bananas, and I love them because they were sweet and creamy.
And well done for any examples that you did.
I hope you really enjoyed tasting different fruits and vegetables, and saying whether you liked or disliked them, and saying why.
Well done.
So how did you get on? I bet you did brilliantly.
Let's have a quick summary of what we've gone through today.
So first of all, we know that we need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, and we need to eat lots of different types of fruits and vegetables too.
We also know that people like and dislike different types of fruits and vegetables.
And lastly, we know we can describe the appearance, the smell, the taste, and the texture of different fruits and vegetables that we'd like and dislike.
Well, well done.
I really hope you enjoyed this lesson all around fruits and vegetables, and I hope you eat more too.
I hope you get your five a day.
Thanks for joining me, and I hope you pick another cooking and nutrition lesson very soon.
Bye.
