Hello, thanks for joining me today.

My name's Mr. Ballam and today we're going to be making a layered breakfast.

That sounds exciting, doesn't it? Are you ready? Okay, so let's get started, shall we? So what are we gonna learn today? Well, what we're going to do is we're going to learn how to make a layered breakfast, and we're going to be looking at all the food skills, also the things that you need to do in order to make the layered breakfast.

So that's what we're going to learn.

Before we get going, let's look at some keywords that we're going to be covering today in this lesson.

We've got four keywords today.

And the first one, can you read it with me? What does it say? Yes, that's right.

Breakfast.

And the breakfast is the first thing we eat in the morning.

So we have breakfast first thing in the morning.

Well done.

How about the second one? That's a bit more tricky, that one, isn't it? Hygienic.

Can you say it with me? Hygienic.

And this is all about keeping yourself clean, especially when you're preparing food and cooking food.

We've got to make sure we're clean in order to cook.

So that's hygienic.

Now, what's the third word? Can you read it with me? Spooning.

Spooning, and that's using a spoon to put food onto or into something.

So we're going to be spooning fruit and spooning yoghourt to make our layered breakfast.

And what's the last keyword we have here? Layered.

And I've said that a few times already, haven't I? Because we're going to be making a layered breakfast, but this is to arrange layers of food on top of each other.

So we're gonna have a layer of fruit, a layer of yoghourt, another layer of fruit and then yoghourt again.

And we're gonna top it with a nice layer of breakfast cereal.

It's gonna be absolutely delicious.

So let's get going, shall we? So the first part of the lesson, we're going to be learning about getting ready to cook.

Now, this is really important and you're gonna be doing this each time you start cooking at school or if you cook at home.

So we are going to be making a layered breakfast, but what is breakfast? Hmm, you could probably tell me, but we covered this, didn't we already? That breakfast is the meal or the food that we eat first thing in the morning.

Have you had breakfast already today? And what do you have for breakfast? What's your favourite? Take a few moments just to think about this one.

My favourite breakfast is lots of lovely fresh fruit, yoghourt and I like a glass of orange juice as well.

It's really nice.

How about you, what do you like? Now, you can eat lots of different types of foods at breakfast time.

I've mentioned what I like and you've probably all mentioned different types of foods too.

Sometimes we might have porridge, which is made from oats and porridge is a hot breakfast.

And this one's got some delicious banana chopped up on top.

We could have toast.

That's quite a simple breakfast really, isn't it? But we can have lots of different toppings on toast, make it really tasty and delicious.

And fruit and yoghourt, I've mentioned that one.

I wonder why that one's here, probably 'cause it's my favourite.

But these are just some examples of what we can have for breakfast in the morning.

Can you name two more foods for me that you might have for breakfast? How did you get on, did you name them? I bet you did.

Now, I've got a quick check here just to make sure you've been listening.

So true or false? Breakfast is eaten in the morning.

Is that true or false? Okay, let's have a look, shall we? It's true.

Yes, breakfast is the food that we eat first thing in the morning.

Well done.

I bet you did brilliantly all of you.

And then before we start cooking, we need to get ready to cook and we need to be hygienic.

Do you remember what that word meant? Do you remember, we looked at it in the keywords, didn't we? That's right, hygienic means to be clean.

We need to be clean in order to cook.

And here are some pupils here talking to each other.

They're just about to start cooking and they're saying, "We need to be clean to cook." So hygienic means to be clean.

Now to get ready, we should tie back long hair if you've got long hair.

I don't, do you? But if you have like Sam, you need to tie that back, 'cause you don't wanna get bits of hair in your food, do you? Oh no, that wouldn't be hygienic, would it? It wouldn't be clean.

So Sam is saying, "I need to tie back my hair." What about this one? Remove watches and wristbands.

Now, I haven't got anything on, but if you have got something on, you need to remove it and put it away safely.

So what's Sam saying here? Sam's saying, "I need to take off my watch." And that's because you don't want the food getting on the watch or you don't want perhaps any dirt on the watch going on the food, do you? Because we need to be clean.

We need to be hygienic when we're cooking.

Have you been listening to me? I'm sure you have.

So who here needs to tie back their hair? Have a look and who's got the longest hair? Is it Sam? Is it Andeep or is it Izzy? That's right, it's Sam.

Sam needs to tie back their hair, don't they? Sam needs to tie back the hair, because it's long.

Well done.

So what else do you need to do to get ready to cook? Well, if you've got long sleeves on, I don't, I got a T-shirt, but if you've got long sleeves, you need to roll those up.

But why? Why would you roll up your long sleeves? Well, you roll them up so food doesn't go on your sleeves to make them dirty or if you've got anything on your sleeves, they might drop into the food and that wouldn't be very clean, would it? So like Izzy is saying here, "I need to roll up my sleeves before I cook." Well done.

Now, really importantly, you need to wash your hands to make them clean.

You need to wash them carefully and you need to wash them using soap and warm water.

Also, you need to dry your hands well.

You can't just wash them and leave them wet, can you? No, you need to wash them properly and need to dry them well to be hygienic.

Well done.

And what's this one? What's Jacob doing here? Yes, Jacob is removing his jumper.

I need to remove my jumper.

And again, he just doesn't want anything getting on his jumper and also nothing from his jumper will fall on the food.

It makes sense, doesn't it? And lastly here, Alex is saying, "Wear an apron.

I need to put on a clean apron." And that's to protect you, but also so no dirt or anything goes on the food too.

Wow, what a great list of getting ready to cook.

Do you remember all of those? I'm sure you do, but it's really important that we follow these so that we're hygienic and clean when we cook.

Now, why should Andeep wash his hands? Is it A to make them soft, B, to make them smell nice or C, to make them clean? That's right, he needs to wash his hands to make them clean.

And you can see here what he's saying, "I need to use soap and warm water." He needs to use that to make his hands clean before he cooks.

And of course he needs to dry them well too, doesn't he? Now, here's a task for you and I'm sure you're gonna do really well at this one.

I'm sure you're gonna do fantastic.

So what do the children need to do before they cook? So Sam is saying, "I need to tie up my." Hmm, what does she need to tie up? Andeep is saying, "I need to take off my." Hmm, what does he need to take off? And Izzy's saying, "I need to wash my." Oh, I don't know.

Okay, now you might want to pause the video now while you answer these questions.

Good luck and we'll be back very shortly together.

Okay, how did you get on? Did you do it? Did you find it easy? I'm sure you did really well.

Let's have a look, shall we? So Sam, Sam needs to tie up her hair, doesn't she? So she's saying, "I need to tie up my hair." Andeep is saying, "I need to take off my watch." And Izzy is saying, "I need to wash my hands." So well done if you've got those correct.

That's brilliant, really, really pleased with you.

We're going to go into the second part of the lesson now.

So we've learned about breakfast, what it is and what we might eat, and also we now know how to get ready to cook, don't we, for this lesson and other lessons in the future too.

So now we're going to be making our layered breakfast.

Now, to make our layered breakfast, we're going to be doing the following.

We're going to be spooning, we're gonna be spooning fruit into a bowl, into a little cup, like in this photo here.

And we're gonna be layering food as well.

And by spooning and layering, we're going to make our layered breakfast.

Look at those, don't they look delicious? Hmm, can't wait to make mine.

So why do you think we put food in layers? Well, there's probably lots of different reasons, but it could be just to make it look pretty.

It could be for some excitement.

So when you put your spoon in, you go through the yoghourt and you find underneath there's a lovely layer of fruit.

There's lots of other reasons why we have layers on food.

Maybe just to keep the food altogether, for example, also it looks nice too.

Well done, I'm sure you've come up with lots of different ideas too.

Now, we're gonna be using a spoon for this recipe and they've got many, many different uses.

And I'm sure you've used a spoon before when you eat breakfast, perhaps having cereal or perhaps having some soup.

But we can use them for measuring.

So it might say one spoon of something.

So we use those to measure and we have measuring spoons to do that.

We could use it to add food.

So we literally just add it to a recipe, add it to the pot, like in this example here.

We can use it to mix.

We can mix everything together.

And lastly, we can layer the foods as well, can't we? So spoons have lots of important uses when we're cooking.

So what's happening in this photo? How did you do? Now, what's the person doing? They're holding the spoon.

They're holding the side of the bowl and they are mixing.

Well done.

What's happening in this photo? That's right, they're layering.

They're making layers of food.

Look at the photo carefully.

You can see layers of fruit, yoghourt, fruit and then on top they're going to put another layer of yoghourt on top using a spoon.

Okay, so now we're going to be making our layered breakfast.

So before you cook, you need to make sure you get ready to cook, and we've been through that, haven't we? Things like tying up our long hair, removing jumpers, washing hands and putting on a clean apron.

And we also need to make sure that we've got our ingredients ready and our equipment ready so we're ready to go.

And then while you are cooking, I want you to make sure that you're safe and hygienic.

Do you remember what that word meant? Yes, it means to be clean, doesn't it? So we're gonna work safely and we're gonna make sure that we're clean when we cook.

And lastly, I want you to think about your food skills.

So think about you using a spoon.

Think about the bowl.

You're going to be pouring food into a bowl.

You're going to be mixing and layering.

So all those different actions that you're going to be doing.

Right, so here's the recipe.

These are the ingredients that you need and these are the equipment that you need and the method as well.

So good luck, pause the video and come back and show me what you've done.

I'm sure you're all gonna do fantastically.

Speak to you soon.

Okay, so how did you get on? Did you do well? Does your breakfast look good? Has it got lots of amazing layers with your fruit and yoghourt? So let's go through the steps together, the steps that we took to make our layered breakfast.

So the first one was we're gonna add some fruit into the cup.

Did you do that? Yeah, I bet you did.

Next, we were going to spoon a layer of yoghourt on top of the fruit.

Then we were gonna add more layers.

So we're gonna have fruit, yoghourt, fruit, yoghourt and then the last one we're going to sprinkle, that's a good word, isn't it? Sprinkle cereal on top.

You can see in the photo here.

Doesn't it look good? This has got some lovely fruit and yoghourt layers and cereal sitting at the top.

Well, I really hope you enjoyed the lesson today.

We've learned loads, haven't we? We've learned things about breakfast, things about the uses of spoons, for example, and the food skills we're going to be using.

We've also covered things around getting ready to cook, as well as making an absolutely delicious and fantastic layered breakfast together.

So let's just have a quick summary of what we've learned today.

So do you remember? Breakfast is the first meal we eat in the morning.

It's the first food that we have when we wake up.

Breakfast.

We need to be hygienic when we cook.

Hygienic, so we need to be clean.

And we've gone through the different stages about getting ready to cook.

And to make our layered breakfast, we used the following food skills.

We did the spooning and the layering.

I bet you did really well at that.

And we looked at the uses of spoons, the different equipment that we used and we could use them for things like measuring, adding food, mixing and layering.

I think you've done really well today.

We've packed in so much in this lesson and you've made a fantastic looking layered breakfast.

I hope you come back again for some more cooking and learning about food and nutrition.

Thanks ever so much and I'll see you soon.

Take care, bye.
