Hello, I'm Mr. Ballam.
Thanks ever so much for joining me today.
I'm really pleased that you've picked this lesson.
Today, we're going to be making butter bean hummus on crackers.
Have you had hummus before? I'm sure you have.
It's really delicious, and I'm so pleased that we're going to be making it together.
So let's find out what we're going to be learning today, shall we? Well, this is what we're going to be learning.
We are going to know and be able to make butter bean hummus, and we're going to spread this on crackers.
So, that's what we're going to do today.
Now, let's look at some key words that we're going to go through in this lesson.
The first one I've already mentioned is called hummus.
And this is a dip that's usually made with chickpeas, but today we're going to use something different.
We're going to use butter beans.
Yes, that's right, a type of bean.
What's the second word? Can you read it with me? Mashing.
This is where we're going to crush the food and make it smooth.
So in this recipe, we're going to crush the butter beans to make the butter beans smooth.
And we're going to use a fork to mash the butter beans up so that they're lovely and smooth.
And the last word is spreading.
And this is where you cover a food with another ingredient.
So for example, in this recipe, we're going to be spreading the hummus that we make on top of crackers.
That makes sense, doesn't it? Okay, let's get started, shall we? The first part of the lesson, we're going to be looking at cooking equipment.
Now, there are lots of different types of pieces of equipment that we use when we're cooking, and they all have different jobs.
What's this called? That's right.
This is a table knife, a type of knife.
And probably you use this when you're eating.
What is it used for? Well, we use this usually for either cutting or spreading.
And in this recipe, we're going to be use it for spreading.
We're going to use a table knife for spreading the hummus on crackers.
What's this called? That's right, it's a fork.
And again, you probably use this when you're eating.
It's quite a common thing to use.
And what is it used for? Well, when we're eating, we use it to pick the food up, but in this recipe we're going to use it to mash the butter beans so that they're lovely and smooth.
And what's this called? That's right.
It's called a bowl.
And what do we use it for, do you think? That's right.
We use it to hold the ingredients in one place.
So we're going to put the butter beans in the bowl, then use the fork to mash them.
There are lots of different types of bowls, aren't there? You might use a bowl, for example, when you have your breakfast cereal in the morning and it keeps all the cereal and milk together.
Okay, let's check if you've been listening, shall we? Now, which of these is used for spreading? Is it A, a fork? Is it B, a bowl? Or is it C, a table knife? That's right, it's a table knife.
We use the table knife for spreading.
And what's this piece of equipment called? Yes.
It's a spoon.
Yes.
Look at the shape of it.
It's a spoon.
And what is this used for? Well, it could be used for lots of different types of jobs, can't it? It could be used for measuring things.
It could be used for stirring, as well.
There are lots of different jobs that a spoon has.
You might use it when you're eating.
So for example, if you're having soup, you might use the spoon to lift the soup up so you can eat it.
A spoon.
And what's this piece of equipment called? Yes, it's a plate, isn't it? And what do we think we use this for? Well, we're going to use the plate to put our crackers on, and then when we spread the hummus on top, we can put them on the plate ready to eat.
We often use a plate to put food on, don't we? So that it's ready to eat, so that it's clean.
Now, have you been listening to me? Now, which of these would you use to mix food together? Have a think.
That's right.
It's B, a spoon.
We would use a spoon to mix food together.
Okay, I've got a task for you now.
Shall we help Alex and Izzy? Let's read together what they're saying, shall we? So what's Alex saying? Alex says, I want to mix food together.
Now, what equipment could we use for that? What equipment could Alex use? And what's Izzy saying? I want to spread cheese on bread.
What equipment could Izzy use? You might want to pause the video now while you have a think about this.
Good luck! Okay, so how did you get on? Shall we have a look? Yes, Andeep is telling Alex to mix food together, he's going to need a spoon and a bowl.
That makes sense, doesn't it? And what about Izzy? She's going to spread.
Ah, Sofia's telling her that she's going to need a table knife, a table knife to spread the cheese over the bread.
Well done.
You've done really well.
I'm really pleased with your progress.
Okay, let's move on to the next part of the lesson.
This is where we're going to be making our butter bean hummus.
Now hummus comes from countries like Turkey and Egypt, and it's a traditional dip that's made from chickpeas.
Do you remember me telling you at the beginning when we were looking at the key words? But in this recipe, we're going to use butter beans instead.
So we're going to use butter beans to make hummus, which is a type of dip.
And to make the butter bean hummus, we are going to be mashing, we are going to be mixing, and we are going to be spreading.
So, we're going to be using these different types of food skills.
So to mash the butter beans, we're going to be using a fork and we're going to mash the beans until they're lovely and smooth.
Not lumpy, smooth.
That's right.
And we're going to use a fork to mix everything together.
So, why are we going to use a fork? Have a little think about this for me.
That's right, we're going to use a fork to mash the butter beans into a smooth paste.
To spread the hummus, we're going to use a table knife and we're going to spread the hummus evenly over the crackers.
So, this means it's lovely and smooth and everybody gets the same amount.
So, there's not one big lump on one side and a small amount on the other.
It's lovely and even.
But you have to remember that knives are sharp.
So, we need to keep the knife away from our fingers so we don't have any accidents.
Now, true or false, knives are sharp.
That's true, isn't it? And it's true, a knife is sharp.
And it's sharp so we can cut food or spread food.
So, we need to use it carefully to prevent any accidents from happening.
Okay, so now let's go on with making our butter bean hummus, shall we? So, we're going to follow the recipe and make this delicious recipe.
I really hope you enjoy it.
But before you cook, you need to get ready to cook, don't you? So, you need to tie up any long hair that you've got, remove any jumpers, wash your hands, and put on a clean apron.
Also, you need to make sure you've got your ingredients and your equipment ready so you're ready to cook.
And then when you're cooking, you need to be safe and hygienic.
You don't want any accidents.
And you need to use your food skills.
Do you remember, we're going to be using mashing.
We are going to be using spreading, aren't we? Lots of different food skills today.
And here are the ingredients and the equipment that you need.
So check that you have these.
And here's the method.
I want you to follow the method carefully to make your butter bean hummus.
Good luck and we'll be back soon.
And remember, you can spread a little bit of cumin over the top of your butter bean hummus on crackers, just for that extra special dash of brilliance at the end.
Hope you enjoy making the recipe.
And remember, pause the video, and we'll be back soon together.
Good luck! Okay, so how did you get on? How was your butter bean hummus? I bet you worked really well, and I bet you showed off all your brilliant food skills, didn't you? So, let's go through the steps, shall we? So the first one, we're going to mash the butter beans with a fork.
Did you do that? How did it go? I bet it went well, didn't it? You're going to mash them so they're lovely and smooth.
Then, we're going to add the lemon juice and the yoghourt.
And then a few pinches, just a small amount of cumin and garlic powder.
And then we're going to mix everything together.
And then lastly, you spread it all over your crackers, just like those you can see on the screen.
Well done.
I really hope you enjoyed making the butter beam hummus on crackers.
It's a really fun thing to make, isn't it? And it tastes delicious, too.
So, remember though, in this lesson we talked about different pieces of equipment having different jobs.
Do you remember what we used? Yes, we used quite a lot of different pieces of equipment, didn't we? We used a fork, a bowl, a table knife, and a plate.
And hummus comes from different countries like Turkey and Egypt.
And that's a dip, remember.
A really tasty, savoury dip.
And to make the butter bean hummus, we mashed the butter beans, we mixed everything together, and we spread the hummus on the crackers.
Well, I really hope you enjoyed it, and I hope you make this again.
It's really tasty, and you can add different types of ingredients.
So you could add, oh, for example, lovely chopped, fresh herbs, for example.
You can really make it exciting and make it your own, too.
Thanks ever so much for joining me, and I hope you join another cooking lesson very, very soon.
Bye!.
