Hi everyone, I'm Mrs. Courts and I'm really excited to share with you the lesson on, "Properties of paper and card".

This is part of the unit on, "Levers and sliders, moving cards".

Let's begin.

Our lesson outcome for today is, I can describe simple properties of paper and card in my designs.

We've got lots of key words today.

Are you ready? I'm gonna say them first, and I want you to repeat them after me.

Let's listen.

Material.

Excellent.

And material is what an object is made from.

My turn, properties.

Brilliant.

Properties are words to describe what a material is like.

Sturdy.

Brilliant.

Sturdy, means strong and hard wearing.

And user.

A user is the person who the object is designed for.

Well done! Let's remember those keywords as we go through our lesson.

There are three learning cycles today, and our first learning cycle is about the properties of card and paper.

There are lots of different types of card and paper, and they can be made from trees, and recycled materials.

A material, let's remember, a material is what an object is made from.

A recycled material, is a material that can be reused and turned into something else.

You might recycle lots of paper and card at school, or at home.

Right, we've got our first check.

Are we ready? Now, I'm going to read the question.

Have a think as I read.

Card and paper comes from, is it trees, recyclable materials, or the garden? Have a little think, there might be a couple of choices there.

Have a think.

Oh, so card and paper comes from, (gasps) yes, that's right trees, and recyclable materials.

Well done! All materials have different properties.

A property describes what a material's like, and the material can have more than one property.

For example, the properties of wood are, it is strong, and it is hard.

Those are the properties of wood.

Paper and card have similar properties.

These are some of the properties of paper.

Paper is usually, bendy, lighter, thinner, and tears easily.

It is not too expensive.

It is easy to decorate.

It is recyclable and it is easy to get.

Card is made of lots of layers of paper, and these are some of the properties of card.

And card is usually, thicker than paper, not too expensive, recyclable, sturdy, and easy to decorate, and easy to get.

I wonder, can you remember what the word sturdy means? It's one of our key words.

Let's have a think.

(gasps) Oh, that's brilliant.

Sturdy means strong and hard wearing.

Right, another check for understanding.

Are we ready? This one's a true or false question.

The thicker the cut, the stronger it is.

Is this true, or is this false? Have a think.

Brilliant.

The thicker the card, the stronger it is.

Is, that's right.

It is true.

Why is this true? Have a quick think.

Oh yes, because it'll be thicker, and therefore it won't break as easily.

This is a really good property of cards.

Well done, good thinking.

Trees are cut down every day, and therefore it is important that we replant these to help the environment.

This is another reason why it's really important to recycle cards and paper products.

Right, we're ready for our first task.

Are you ready, you're listening carefully? Brilliant.

Look at these properties of cards, and circle the words, that show that card is a really good material for greetings cards.

Thicker than paper, tears easily, water resistant, Sturdy.

<v ->Pause the video now and have a go.

</v> Welcome back.

Right, you should have completed task A.

Are we ready to have a look? Card is a good material for celebration cards because it is, let's have a look.

Is it thicker? Is it tears easily? Is it water resistant? Is it sturdy? If you put thicker than paper and sturdy, you are right.

Well done.

It is thicker than paper, and sturdy because these are good properties of cards.

Right, we are ready for our learning cycle two.

We are going to be creating ideas.

Are you ready? The design specification is really important to the designer.

It helps to design what the users want.

Lucas says, "I am the designer.

I'm designing the celebration card." And Izzy says, "I'm the user, the person you are designing it for." It helps the designer to think about the user, the materials, and the equipment that are needed.

Aisha says, "A user is the person who's making the cards." Alex says, "No, a user is the person who the card is being made for." Who is correct? Have a little think.

Right, Alex is right.

Well done.

Alex is right, because a user is the person who will be using the card.

Designers always look back at the design specification, to make sure that their ideas meet the user's needs.

The design specification is used by designers to help them with sketching ideas.

Oh another check for understanding.

Are you ready? A design specification is very important.

It tells the designer, is it A, what someone wants? B, what the designer wants.

C, what the user wants.

Pause the video and have a little think.

Right, a design specification is very important.

It tells the designer, yes, that's right, what the user wants.

Well done.

Materials are the items needed to make the design.

An equipment list, lists the tools needed.

These are materials.

Cards, glue, and split pins.

These are the equipment, the scissors, sticky tack, and pencil.

When designing a greetings card, designers think about the user, their age, and the type of celebration, how it will look, and the materials and the equipment they need to use.

Lucas says, "I am making a springtime card for my sister.

I want the card to have pictures and use glitter.

My sister is four years old and likes lots of colours." When designing a moving card, we also need to think about the movement, and which mechanism works best.

Should it move in a straight line? That's right, it would be a slider.

A slider mechanism.

Should it move in a curve line? Brilliant.

This would be a lever, a lever mechanism.

We are ready now for task B.

Right, first, you need to create two different designs, and mechanisms for a moving card.

You need to think really hard about the user, their age, and the type of celebration, how it will look, and the materials and equipment to use.

You need to also think about the mechanism that you'll use.

Use your design specification to help you, and when you finish that, you then need to star your chosen design.

Pause the video and complete task B.

Right, by now, you should have completed task B, and this is Lucas's work.

Lucas's ideas were based on winter and used a slider mechanism.

Lucas then checked his ideas matched his previously completed design specification.

This is his design specification.

The card for a 4-year-old, a slider mechanism used, made from cards, and equipment, and materials listed.

Okay? So from that, he put a star next to his favourite design idea.

Did you remember to put a star by your favourite idea? These were Lucas's designs.

He created two designs and put a star next to his favourite.

One of them was a slider, and the other was a lever.

This one's a slider mechanism, and he labelled his materials that he wanted to use.

This is the lever mechanism, and again, he labelled his materials.

He then put, remembered to put a star by the slider mechanism.

Now we're ready to move on to our learning cycle three.

Choosing a final design.

A design will choose the best design, and draw a bigger, final version.

Final design to add detail.

The designer might label, how this is designed for the user, the mechanism to be used, and the materials to be used, and the equipment to be used.

Having a look at our check for understanding, which piece of equipment would you add to your plan for making a slider or lever card mechanism? Which piece of equipment? Pause the video and have a think.

So, the piece of equipment would be, the scissors, A.

Well done.

Right, ready? Now we're ready for our final task, task C.

Using your chosen design, create a large final design showing, how this is designed for the user, the mechanism to be used, the materials to be used, the equipment to be used.

Pause the video and complete task C.

Welcome back, you should have completed task C.

Let's have a look.

Well, this is Lucas's work.

Lucas sketched and labelled his design, based on the idea in his head.

You can see the penguin is sliding down the mountain, on a slider mechanism, and this was Lucas's work.

He then labelled around it with all the different materials he wanted to use.

Did you remember to put all your materials? Well done.

We've reached at the end of our lesson for today.

So, a big well done.

You've worked really hard.

I wonder if you can remember all these things that we've learned, let's see.

Show me your thumbs if you remember them.

Card is made of different layers of paper, and comes from trees.

If you remember that, show me your thumbs.

Well done.

Paper and card are materials that have different properties.

Well done.

Card is used to make greeting cards, because it's strong, sturdy, not too expensive, and easy to decorate.

Oh, brilliant.

And finally, final designs consider users, materials, and equipment to organise product design.

Well done.

You've worked very, very hard.

See you next time.
