Hello there.
I'm Mrs. Howley, and this is Cedric and we love stories.
And we love exploring new places and meeting new characters in stories using all of our senses.
Cedric would like us to recycle the story that we learned in unit 13, the story of Awongalema.
That sounds like a great idea.
In this lesson, we're going to generate ideas for a recycled story.
We're going to start with a spelling activity.
Then we're going to recycle our story map, and then it will be story time for our new stories.
In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or some paper, a pencil or a pen, and your brilliant brain.
If you need to collect any equipment, pause the video now, and then press play when you're ready.
Cedric would like us to sing one of his favourite songs.
It's "Old McDonald," but as we're going to be recycling the story of Awongalema, I thought we could recycle "Old McDonald." Yes, you might have heard the story of Awongalema in unit 13, but don't worry if you haven't.
So, instead of, ♪ Old McDonald had a farm ♪ we could sing ♪ Awongalema was the tree ♪ Yes.
♪ Awongalema was the tree ♪ ♪ Which animals did you see ♪ Ah, yes.
Cedric reminded us that in this unit, we're thinking about using our senses for description.
So, what animals could we see? And then we can describe the sound of the animals as well.
♪ Awongalema was the tree ♪ ♪ Which animals did you see ♪ Oh, which animals did we see? Okay, see if you can guess ♪ With a rawr here and a rawr rawr there ♪ ♪ Here a rawr there a rawr everywhere a rawr rawr ♪ ♪ Awongalema was the tree ♪ ♪ Which animals did you see ♪ Could you tell which animal that was? That's right, we could do the tortoise.
Now the tortoise was a slow animal in the story of Awongalema.
So he could go, plod plod plod.
Join in with me ♪ With a plod plod here and plod plod there ♪ ♪ Here a plod, there a plod, everywhere of a plod plod ♪ ♪ Awongalema was the tree ♪ ♪ Which animal did you see ♪ Thanks, Cedric, I enjoyed that! We can recycle that song again, later in this unit.
In the story of Awongalema, we have some contrasts, things that are different or opposite from each other.
We have characters that are really fast and we have a character that is very slow.
And our spelling in this part of the unit, we are looking at a prefix, that's a letter or a group of letters that goes at the start of a word.
We're looking at a prefix that makes a contrast.
It makes an opposite word.
I can use Cedric as an example, if you don't mind, Cedric, okay.
Cedric sometimes makes me so happy, but sometimes he does something very naughty and then he makes me very unhappy.
See if you can spot what I'm doing to these words.
Cedric is very helpful around the house.
He helps tidy up, but other times when he's too busy playing in the garden with the butterflies, he is unhelpful.
I like to lock the door.
Cedric likes to unlock the door.
I like to tie my laces.
Cedric likes to untie my laces.
What did I do to those words? I added the prefix -un, and it created the opposite word.
Let's have a read of some other spellings using the -un prefix.
Read them with me, unhappy, unhelpful, untie, unlock, unfold.
So, if I fold something up, Cedric might unfold it and unpack.
I pack the suitcase, Cedric unpacks it.
Pause the video now and have a go at writing down the words with the -un prefix.
Today, we are going to recycle a story, but what does that mean? You might have recycled a story before.
You keep the same story, but you change a few things in the story.
What could we change in the story of Awongalema? We're going to use our story map from unit 13.
Don't worry if you haven't got that, because we're going to take a closer look at mine in a moment.
Cedric's worried because he can't remember the story.
That's fine, Cedric, because I'm going to recap it.
Now, it was set in the forests of Africa.
It was hot and it hadn't rained for a long time.
The animals were so hungry.
One of the animals said that if they could remember the name of the tree, then it would give them all the fruit they wanted, but nobody could remember the name of the tree.
So they sent a cheetah who ran and he ran and he ran as fast as he could to the top of the mountain.
And he called the mountain spirits and said "Mountain spirits, talk to me, tell me the name of the old, old tree." "Awongalema", the mounting spirits called back.
"Awongalema" thought the cheetah.
And then he ran and he ran and he ran and he ran as fast as the wind straight, crash, into an anthill.
And he got bitten all over by ants.
"Ow!" he screamed.
And as he brushed off the ants, he realised, he'd forgotten the name of the tree.
So when he got back, the animals were very disappointed.
Then, they sent another animal.
This time they sent the lion, and he ran as fast as he could to the top of the mountain, heard the name, ran back down, crashed into an anthill got bitten all over and forgot the name.
So, then the animals sent a third animal.
They sent a Jaguar, and he ran and he ran and he ran as fast as he got to the top of the mountain, heard the name from the mountain spirits, ran and he ran and he ran as fast as he could.
And then he crashed into an anthill.
Crash! Got bitten all over.
"Ow!" and forgot the name.
And when he got back to the animals, they didn't know what to do.
But then, Owl suggested that they send a slow animal.
So, they sent a tortoise and he went plod plod plod to the top of the mountain, heard the name, plod plod plod back down the mountain, remembered the name, said the name, and the tree was filled with the most delicious fruit! The animals were so happy.
Now, what could we recycle? Cedric thinks we could change the animals.
That's a great idea.
You could even use your favourite animals.
That's right, Cedric.
Three of the animals have to be fast animals.
And one of them has to be slow.
Can you think of some fast animals? I know an animal that's quite fast.
It has spiky horns and big nostrils, and it lives in Africa, it's a warthog.
Can you do a for a warthog? Brilliant! Now, we need another fast animal.
I know a fast animal, it's a fast bird that runs on its legs.
It's an ostrich which goes peck, peck, peck.
Can you go peck, peck, peck? Brilliant! Now, we need a third fast animal.
What could it be? Could it be a snake? They're quite fast as they slither off.
No, I think, Yes, I like the sound of this animal, because it laughs, it's a hyena! It goes, ha ha ha ha! Can you go ha ha ha ha, like a hyena? Fantastic, so now we need a slow animal.
I'm going to choose a snail.
Oh, Cedric's very happy about that.
Now I've chosen my animals.
I can recycle my story map.
So, here's my story map.
I've got, it was hot, and the animals gathered under the huge Acacia tree, but here the first animal, I'm going to draw a warthog with his sharp tusks, his big nostrils and his spiky tufts of hair, that's instead of the cheetah.
Now the warthog goes up the mountain and down the mountain and hits the anthill.
Then, the next creature has got long legs, got a large feathered body and she's got a long neck and a sharp beak, it's an ostrich! And that's instead of my lion.
And the ostrich goes up the mountain, down the mountain, hits the anthill, forgets the name.
And then instead of the Jaguar, I got my hyena.
His eyes, his spotted body and his distinctive laugh.
And the hyena goes up the mountain, learns the name, comes down the mountain, hits the anthill, forgets the name.
So, who were they going to send instead? So, this time, not the tortoise but a snail, Another slow animal And he slithers up the mountain, he comes back down the mountain, says the name, and the tree is filled with fruit.
Now, it's your turn to recycle your story map.
If you don't have a story map, draw a picture of each of the animals you'd like in the story.
Remember, you need three fast ones and one slow animal.
Press play when you've edited your map.
I'm going to have a go now at using my recycled story map to tell my recycled story In this unit, we're really focusing on building a toolkit for describing using all the senses.
So, as I'm telling the story, I'm going to start to think about what these animals might look like, sound like, feel like, I'm also going to wear my magical hat, because every story has got some magic in it.
