Hi everyone, my name's Ms. Toole and this is Oscar, the owl.
Myself and Oscar love to retell stories and find out about the world through story telling.
And in this unit, we are finding out all about how butterflies came to be.
So let's have a look at what we're going to be doing today.
We're going to start off by hearing our story, then we're going to map it.
We're going to step through our story and then we're going to step and speak it.
So, by the end of this lesson, you are going to be able to retell a story from memory.
So you are going to need an exercise book or a piece of paper, a pencil or a pen, and your amazing brain.
So pause the video now if you need to go and get your resources.

Last lesson, Oscar and I told you a story on how butterflies came to be.
And in the story, there was a character called the creator.
Do you remember that character? What type of character was he, Oscar? That's right, he was a loving character because he loved everything that he created.
And he cared for them by making sure that once he created them, they were still okay and that's why he created the butterflies to bring them joy, so that when are worrying they can look up, see a butterfly and smile.
Well, the creator cared for everything so much that he created a song.
And I would like you to share the song with me and learn it at home.
So are we ready, Oscar? Okay, the first line is, ♪ I made the fish that swim in the sea ♪ See if you could do that.
♪ I made the fish that swim in the sea ♪ Good, the next on says.
♪ I made people like you and me ♪ Are we ready? ♪ I made people like you and me ♪ Then it goes, ♪ I like to create and admire the view ♪ Are you ready? ♪ I like to create and admire the view ♪ And then the last line say, ♪ But most of all, I liked creating you ♪ You ready? ♪ But most of all, I liked creating you ♪ Super, alright, Oscar, are you ready to put it all together? Let's go.

Right, now it's time to listen to our story on how butterflies came to be.
♪ It's story time, it's story time, look, listen, wow ♪ In the beginning, the creator made all things.
Birds and bees, fish and fowl, plants and porcupines, horses and humans.
He made it all, then had a long sleep.
When he woke, he went for a walk to see how his creatures were getting on.
The fish were swimming, the birds were flying, snakes were slithering, it all seemed to be going to plan.
Till he came to a human village.
He noticed the children playing, laughing, singing and was pleased.
But then he saw their parents, working and worrying about themselves and their families.
They had no joy, only hard work and worry.
"That's not right." he thought.
But what shall I do? He went off to the wise woman in the forest and asked her advice.
She was sitting in her hut smoking a pipe.
"The parents are all so serious." he said, "They have no joy, just duty, that wasn't my plan, I made this world so they would feel joy." "So," she said, "You have to make something to give them joy.
Take the best things from what you have made, the things that you most find joy and mix them together into something new.
And then see what happens." So, he went out into the world and collected his favourite things.
The moonlight shining on the water.
A flowers delicate petals, pollen from a flower.
And the pattern of a snakes skin.
He collected them all and mixed them in a bag, he breathed a breath of life, and out came butterflies.
Beautiful butterflies of every colour in the rainbow, delicate and beautiful.
As he watched, they flew into the village, the children laughed and chased them in the streets.
Then, the parents looked up and just for a moment, from their work and worry, to see what was going on.
Each time they saw a butterfly, they smiled before going back to work.
And that's why, when you see butterflies, just for a moment, you find yourself smiling.
Now that we have listened to the story we're going to have a go at mapping the key points of our story to help us with our retell.
So the first thing that happened in our story is we have our creator, so, we're going to draw our creator.
And our creator creates fish and fowl.
He creates plants and porcupines.
He creates horses and humans.
We've got our human and we've got our horse.
And then, he decides to go for a long rest because he'd been working really hard, our creator, creating everything from idea.
Then after his rest, he decides to go for a walk to see how everything is doing.
And he sees the fish swimming, the birds flying high and the snakes slithering.
But then he gets to the human village, where he sees the children playing and laughing but he sees parents worrying about work and they have no joy.
So we've got our parent here with no joy.
And the creator thinks, "That's not right, but what can I do?" So can you remember who he goes to visit? He goes into the woods to visit the wise woman.
We've got our wise woman.
And the wise woman says that he needs to create something to bring them joy.
So she sends him out into the forest and says "Put everything into a bag that you can create joy with." So off he goes into his bag and can you remember what he puts? He puts the moonlight on the sea.
And we have the flowers delicate petals, they're describing it with that delicate petals.
And then after we've got our delicate petals, we've got the pollen from a flower.
And our final thing is the pattern from our snake skin.
Do my snake skin, pattern from a snake skin.
And he puts all these items into his bag.
And he breathes a breath of air.
And what comes out of it? We get our butterflies! Butterflies come out.
And the parents of the village, just for a moment, look up from their work and they see the butterflies flying ahead.
And just for that moment, they smile and they have joy.
So that's my story map.
I'd like you now to have a go at creating your own story map for our story, how butterflies came to be.
Now that you have your story map, we're going to talk our story through using the map.
So I will go first and then I want you to have a go at home.
So, in the beginning, the creator made all things great.
He made fish and fowl, plants and porcupines, humans and horses.
And when he'd finished, he took a great, big sleep.
When he woke from his sleep he decided to go for a walk.
To see how everything was getting on.
The fishes were swimming and the snakes were slithering.
But when he got to a human village, he noticed that the children were laughing and enjoying themselves but their parents were full of worry.
So the creator went to the wise old woman in the forest and asked "What can I do? I didn't create the world for people to be worried." The wise old woman said he needs to gather all the things that he thought were beautiful and would bring joy.
And put them together to make something to bring the villagers joy.
So the creator went off and he got the moonlight shining on the water.
He got the delicate petals, the pollen from a flower, and the snake skin.
He put them into a bag and breathed a breath of life.
And out came beautiful butterflies.
And whenever the parents were working and they looked up just for a moment and they saw the butterflies, they began to smile and that's why whenever we see a butterfly, we smile.
So have a go now at talking through your story map.
Story map and talk through our story, we're going to have a go at stepping our story.
Now, stepping requires you to have a bit of space around you, so check with an adult to make sure you are safe, first.
When you're stepping, we're going to step the seven parts of our story map.
And each time we step it, we're going to do an action to represent what happened in that main part.
And we might add a few words just to help us.
Now, I haven't got that much room to step so I'm going to step on the spot.
But you can step as if you're stepping on stepping stones for each part of our story.
So, are we ready? The first part of our story map is the creator, so, creator.
And he made fish, fowl, plants, porcupines, humans and horses.
So we've got creator.
Fish, fowl, plants, porcupines, human, horses.
The next step is when he went for a sleep, so we're going to go, sleep, tired.
And then when he gets to the village, no joy, because remember the adults have no joy.
No joy.
So who then goes he visit? The wise woman.
Fill a bag! So he's filling his bag, the moonlight on the water, the delicate petals.
The pollen and the snake skin.
Bag, butterflies! What's the last thing that happened? Smiling, butterflies.
Can you see how I've told the story? I'll go through it again now, each step and then I want you to have a go at home, are we ready? Creator, fish, fowl, porcupines, plants, humans, horses.
Tired, shh.
No joy.
Fill a bag! Moonlight on the sea, delicate petals, pollen, snake skin.
Butterflies! Butterflies and joy.
Have a go at home and step through your story map.
Now that you've had a go at talking the story, mapping the story and stepping through the story, we're now going to have a go at stepping and speaking.
So for this you are going to need your story map.
We're still going to do our seven steps, so you need to make sure you're in a safe space.
But while we're stepping through, we're going to actually retell the story and you're going to become the role of the storyteller.
I don't need you to tell the story word for word because that's not enjoying the story, I want you to go with the flow of your story and have a go in experimenting with our story of how butterflies came to be.
So I'm going to have a go first and then I want you to have a go at home.
So, are we ready? In the beginning, the creator made all things.
Fish and fowl, plants and porcupines, humans and horses.
And when he had finished, he went for a long sleep.
When we woke, he went for a walk to see everything that he had created.
The fish were swimming, the birds were flying and the snakes were slithering.

And that's why, whenever you see a butterfly, you find yourself smiling for just a moment.
