And this is Cedric.

Cedric wants to know what I'm doing.

I'm writing in my diary.

What am I writing? I'm writing about all the adventures me and Cedric had together yesterday.

I love writing down in my diary, the things that I've done and all my thoughts and feelings.

We're going to do some drama today.

So we'll have lots to write about in our diaries.

In this lesson, we're going to deepen our understanding of a recount through roleplay.

We're going to start with a spelling activity.

Then we're going to play a game, and then we're going to do some hot-seating.

In this lesson you'll need an exercise book or some paper, a pencil or a pen, and your brilliant brain.

For our spelling in this unit, we're looking at some tricky words.

Some common exception words that we can't sound out, we've just got to know them.

Now I've got some of those words in my magical hat.

So I'm going to challenge myself and you.

And I'm going to pull one of these words out of my magical hat.

And then we've got to try and put that word into a sentence.

Let's try.

The first word is, was.

Was, let's see.

It was a lovely day yesterday.

Can you try putting it into a sentence? It was.

Great.

Should we try another one? Okay.

Oh, this one will be useful when we're writing our diaries.

Today, today.

Today is going to be a great day.

Can you have a try with the word today? Today.

Brilliant.

Let's try one more.

Oh, my, I've got one for this one.

My.

I had lots of fun with my friend Cedric.

Could you use the word my in a sentence.

Let's read these words once together.

And then you can have a try at putting them in a sentence.

My, today, were, was, so, me, I, of.

Have a go now at putting a few of those words into a sentence.

You might even want to write that sentence down.

Be careful with the spelling, they are tricky.

We're going to play the, tell me more game now.

You might've played it before, but if you haven't, don't worry, it's very simple.

Cedric is going to say a sentence about something and then I'm going to choose something in that sentence and ask him to tell me more.

We'll show you how it works.

Okay Cedric off you go.

Cedric was munching on some flowers earlier.

Cedric, tell me more about flowers.

He said daffodils are his favourite flowers.

Tell me more about daffodils Cedric.

Daffodils are bright yellow flowers.

Tell me more about yellow Cedric.

Yellow is one of his favourite colours because it makes him happy.

See, it's quite a simple game, but we'll need to use these techniques later when we're in role as well.

Why don't you pause the video now and have a go at playing, the tell me more game with a Teddy or a grownup at home.

Right, we're going to use some drama now.

A technique called hot-seating to help us really understand how Ma Liang was feeling and what he was thinking during those events that he described in his diary extract.

But first I want to think about what we'd ask Ma Liang, if he was here now about those events and I'm going to use my recount map to help me come up with some questions.

So let's think about event one.

When he was changing people's lives, when he drew that river and then it came to life.

What would you like to ask Ma Liang about that? I think I'd like to ask him, how did you feel when the river came to life? How did you feel when the river came to life? That's my first question.

Then I'm having a look at event two, when he was thrown in jail.

I think I'd like to ask him, what were you thinking when you were in jail? What were you thinking when you were in jail? That's my question two.

What would you like to ask him about the time when he was thrown into jail? And finally, I want to question about how he felt when he got his paintbrush back.

I think that's going to be my third question.

How did you feel when you got your paintbrush back? What would you like to ask him? Maybe a question about the third event on our text map.

Pause the video now and jot down some questions that you'd like to ask Ma Liang.

We are ready for our hot-seating.

You might have done hot seating before, but if you haven't, don't worry, it's very simple.

I'm going to sit in the hot seat as the character.

So that Cedric can ask the character some questions and then I'll answer it in role.

Okay, so I'm going to become Ma Liang and Cedric is going to ask me some questions, all about the experiences I had that I recounted in my diary.

Cedric will you help me with my hat, thank you.

Okay, and I've got my magic paintbrush.

Hello? I'm Ma Liang.

Have you got some questions for me? Oh, who's this fella.

Lovely to meet you Cedric, I'm Ma Liang.

What would you like to ask me? Have you been reading my diary? What would you like to ask me? How did I feel when the river came to life? Oh, it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

It was absolutely amazing.

Tell you more about what it looked like.

Well, it was the clearest water you've ever seen and the people, they were amazed as well.

They had their mouths wide open.

Nobody could believe it.

And they were so pleased because they really needed water.

You've got another question for me.

Go on then, what's your next question? What was I thinking when I was in jail? I don't like to think back to that time, but I'll be really honest.

It wasn't nice in jail.

It was cold, it was dark.

But you asked what was I thinking? What was I thinking when I was in jail? All I kept thinking is how am I going to get my magic paintbrush back? How am I going to help the people? You've got another question for me.

Go on then Cedric, what's your other question? How did I feel when I got the magic paintbrush back? Well, I was so relieved.

I was so worried that I wasn't going to be able to help the people again.

And then it was like, phew! I'm going to be able to help the people.

I was so happy.

I was so relieved.

Well, I felt warm all over.

I had a big grin on my face.

It was brilliant.

I really enjoyed being Ma Liang then.

When you have a goal, you can really explore exactly how Ma Liang was feeling, what he was thinking.

This is the really fun bit, because now you get to pause the video and you get to become Ma Liang.

So you're back as you and not Ma Liang anymore.
