Hello everyone I'm Mrs.Howley and this is Cedric and he's been really busy writing in his diary.

So have I! Have you ever written in a diary? You need to write down what you did, what you thought and what you felt.

And it's so good looking back on it.

Isn't it Cedric? He's been up to all sorts.

And we get to read a bit of his diary, in our lesson today.

In this lesson, we're going to practise retrieving information from a text.

We're going to start with some spelling, then we're going to have a think about our reading strategies, what we need to do to be brilliant readers.

Then we're going to read the text, some of Cedric's diary, and then we're going to explore the text and answer some questions.

You're going to need some paper, or an exercise book, a pen, or a pencil, and your brilliant brain.

Pause the video now, if you need to collect any of those things, then press play when you're ready to go.

So far in spelling in this unit, we've been looking at some tricky words.

That we can't sound out, we've just got to know them.

Now I know these words are going to be really useful when we're writing our diaries.

Because I've used lots of them, When I've been writing my diary.

Let's have a look.

My.

I like writing in my diary.

Today.

Today I have been busy in the garden.

Were.

We were having fun.

Was.

I was really happy.

So.

We are so busy today.

Me.

Me and Cedric had a great time.

I.

I wish we could play in the garden every day.

Of.

I could hear the sound of laughter.

I wonder if you could create some sentences using our tricky words.

Have a go at this now.

Look at the word, say it in a sentence, just like I did then.

Then write the word without peeking at it and then check the spelling.

Have a go at that now with each of those words.

Pause the video and then press play, when you're ready to go.

Oh! there's so much to read in Cedric's diary.

The things he'd been up to.

Today we're going to practise finding information in a text.

And we retrieve that information.

We call that skill retrieval.

We're looking for the information and we're finding it in the text.

That's what we're practising today.

When we're reading, don't forget to use your magnet eyes to look at the letters, make the sound, and then blend them together.

Now, if you get to the end of a sentence and it doesn't make sense, go back and read that sentence again.

We're focusing on retrieval and we're going to have to use these skills to do it really well.

I know we can do it.

We're going to read the question really carefully and look for the key words.

So we know exactly what information we're looking for in the text.

We're going to scan the text, looking for particular words.

And then we're going to find the information that we're looking for.

Hey Cedric, are you sure that you don't mind us reading your diary today? He said he likes sharing what he's been thinking, what he's been doing.

I can't wait to read it.

Let's have a look.

I've noticed that at the start of Cedric's diary, it says, dear diary.

I always write that at the start of my diary as well.

I like to think that I'm talking to a person, when I write in my diary.

Get your finger ready and you can follow along with the text.

You can download the text if you want to, but don't worry if you can't, you can have a look on the screen.

Dear diary, What, that was one of our tricky words.

What a F-U-N fun D-A-Y, what a fun day I have H-A-D, had what a fun day I have had! In, the.

One of our tricky words in the M-O-R-N-I-NG morning in the morning.

You might have noticed we've got another verb in the morning The S-U-N, sun was, in the morning the sun was shining A-N-D and, the sky was the blue.

In the morning, the sun was shining and the sky was blue.

The B-E-E-S Oh, that's a plural we've got an S on the end.

The bees buzzed, past tense verb.

The bees buzzed while playing I-N, in the flowers.

The bees buzzed while playing in the flowers.

We P-L-A-Y-E-D, played, played We played G-A split diagraph, M-E, game We played a game of A split diagraph A we played a game of chase together.

We played a game of chase together! I F-E-L-T felt so.

And there's a vowel ending with E and does not make an E sound I felt so happy! We played the game of chase together.

I felt so happy.

Sounds like you had a great day! Let's see what else he wrote.

Later I.

Remember that word I, on its own, I later, I W-E-N-T, went to the P-O-N-D pond Later I went to the pond to V-I-S-I-T visit, two syllables visit.

Later, I went to the pond to visit the F-R-O-G-S.

Plural frogs Later I went to the pond to visit the frogs.

They tried to give me a swimming lesson, B-U-T, but I H-A-D had a paddle instead.

They tried to give me a swimming lesson, but I had a paddle instead.

I do N-O-T, not T-H-I-N-K think I do not think I W-I-L-L be very G-O-O-D good, A-T swimming.

I do not think I will be very good at swimming.

My SH-E-LL my shell is too, We've got two O's there.

So that makes the too too, my shell is too B-I-G, big and too heavy.

My shell is too big and too heavy.

Oh Cedric, I wonder if it will be any good at swimming.

What do you think? So now it's my turn to have a go at using my retrieval skills to find key information in the text.

I'm going to call it Cedric to help me so I can remember the strategies that we talked about.

Can you call him for me? One, two, three, Cedric! Oh here he is.

Thanks Cedric.

Right Cedric, what were the strategies that we talked about? Read the question carefully.

Thanks Cedric.

Okay.

What were the bees doing while they were playing? What were the bees doing, while they were playing? Now I need to find that information in the text.

Which word could I scan for? What do you think, Cedric? Bees, great! So I'm going to scan the text for the word bees to see what they were doing while they were playing.

The bees.

Buzzed while playing in the flowers.

The bees buzzed would be my answer.

Thanks Cedric.

That was really helpful.

Now it's your turn.

What colour was the sky? So your answer will be, the sky was.

Scanning the text that anything about the sky Pause the video now to write down your answer, and press play when you've got it.

Great let's have a look.

What colour was the sky? It said in the text in the morning, the sun was shining and the sky was blue.

So the answer was, the sky was blue.

Let's have a go at another one.

Keep remembering those strategies that we talked about.

This one we've got three choices.

What game did he play with the bees? Mmh, it's tricky cause he likes lots of games.

But we're going to find the answer in the text.

So we're looking for information about him playing with the bees.

Our three choices are tennis, chase or football.

You like all of those, don't you? Pause the video now to write down your answer, then press play when you're ready.

Okay let's see.

Which game did he play with the bees? It says, we played a game of.

Chase together.

So the answer was chase.

Let's have another look at this section of the text.

It talks about Cedric going to the pond, the swimming lesson.

Okay.

I think we're ready for some more questions.

Who did he visit at the pond? Cedric says he'd scan for the word pond.

using those Magnet eyes.

He visited, Pause the video now to write down your answer.

Let's see.

Who did he visit the at pond? It said in his diary, later I went to the pond, to visit the.

Frogs! Absolutely right.

What did he do instead of swimming? I'd have to look really carefully here.

Maybe look at the sentence that has the word swimming in it.

Maybe have a look at the sentence before or after.

If that doesn't help you find the answer.

Okay.

What did he do instead of swimming? He.

Pause the video now so you can write down your answer and press play when you're ready.

What did he do instead of swimming? Let's see.

They tried to give me a swimming lesson, but.

oh! there's that conjunction that helps us show contrast in ideas.

They tried to give me a swimming lesson, but I had a.

Paddle instead.

So instead of swimming, Cedric had a paddle.

Well done if you got that right? Why does he think that he won't be good at swimming? Now be careful on this one.

There are two reasons.

Absolutely right Cedric.

There's two reasons in the text for why Cedric thinks he won't be any good at swimming.

He thinks.

Pause the video now and see you can write down both of those reasons.

Why does he think he won't be good at swimming? He said that he thought his shell was too big and too heavy.

Well done! Now we've got one final task for you using your retrieval skills.

So using all of the information that you've got in the text.

Cedric's looking forward to seeing these ones.

Cedric, would like you to draw a picture of his day that he described in his diary entry.

Oh! good idea.

Cedric would like you to label the picture with the evidence from the text.

So for example, if you draw some bees playing in the flowers, you might want to label that with the bits of the text that gives that information, pause the video now have a go and press play when you're ready.

How did you get on? I hope you managed to use your super detective reading skills and all the advice from Cedric as well.

Yes Cedric, we're going to sing our diary song one more time now.

We sang this in a previous lesson and it helps us to think about all the things that we include in a diary.
