Hello, everybody, I'm Miss Asal, and I'm here to share some more handwriting with you today.

We're gonna be learning some new letters, and as always, we're going to have lots of fun.

Are you ready? Let's begin.

The outcome for today's lesson is I can form the letters v, w, x, and z.

And this comes from the unit of work, Writing Lowercase Letters in Print.

There are a number of keywords that I would like you to look out for and to listen out for in today's lesson.

Let's go through these keywords one at a time.

My turn and your turn.

Are you ready? X-height letter, diagonal line, straight line, zigzag.

Let's keep our eyes and our ears open for each of these keywords that are going to come up in our lesson today.

Today's lesson has four parts to it.

we are going to begin with the formation of the lowercase letter v, then formation of the lowercase letter w, formation of the lowercase letter x, and formation of the lowercase letter z.

Let's get started.

We're going to begin with just a few hand warmups.

But can you remember why is it important to warm up your hands before handwriting? It's because our hands and our wrists get stronger when we exercise them, just like any other muscle in our body.

And making our hands and our wrists stronger will help you to hold your pencil using your tripod grip.

Let's do two warmups.

We are going to start with playing the piano.

So just stretch your fingers out so you can reach all of the keys on the piano.

I'm going to have a go first.

I am just going to play a nice, lovely, imaginary tune on my piano, and I'm stretching and bending each of my fingers, and I'm having a lot of fun.

My music sounds great.

Now it's your turn.

Get your fingers in position, just hovering above the keys on the piano, and let's go.

Play yourself a lovely little tune.

Oh, this sounds good.

All of these lovely tunes.

Can we play the same tune together? Going from one end of our piano to the other and back again.

One more time.

What a lovely tune? Well done, everybody.

Next we are going to put our hands in a clapping position.

Let me go first.

So I'm gonna bring my hands together like this, and I'm gonna press all of my fingers from one hand against the fingers on the opposite hand, and my palms, this part of the centre of our hand, are also touching each other, and I'm pressing together like this in a clapping position.

And now it's your turn.

Get your hands together as if you were going to clap and then press them together.

Press each of the fingers against the opposite finger.

Press your palms together.

Fantastic, we are ready to move into writing our letter.

To help us form our letters today we are going to have a go at this handwriting pattern.

I'm gonna make this pattern with my finger, going down, up the diagonal line, down, up.

Let me show you one more time.

So we're going down and up in the diagonal.

Now it's your turn.

Get your finger ready.

Down, up, making these nice diagonal lines.

Can you see some of them are tall? Some of these lines are short.

Fantastic, and now let's have a go using our elbow.

So I'm gonna go down and up, down and high up, down and up, down and up.

And now it's your turn.

Get your elbow ready, let's go.

Down and up, down and high up, down and up, down and high up.

Fantastic, we are all set to have a go at writing the lowercase letter v.

Look closely at the screen.

What can you see? Do you see that letter v has appeared? What do you notice about it? Turn to someone next to you and tell them everything you notice about this lowercase letter v.

Pause the video here.

Did you notice that the v is made up of straight lines? Did you notice that it's an x-height letter? Which is up as high as the x-height line? Did you notice that it's made up of diagonal lines? Let's find out more about the lowercase letter v.

Letter v is an x-height letter.

Letter v is a small letter.

Letter v has two diagonal straight lines, and the two lines meet on the baseline.

Check for understanding.

Select the two true statements.

The letter v is an x-height letter.

The letter v is a tall letter.

Letter v has two diagonal lines.

The letter v finishes with a flick.

Pause the video here.

Well done if you selected a and c, the letter v is an x-height letter and the letter v has two diagonal lines.

It's time to have a go at forming the letter v in the air.

First of all, I will have a go and then it's your turn.

I'm gonna start by using my finger to form the letter v, and I'm going to start on the x-height line.

I'm going to go diagonally down to the baseline, and then I'm going to go diagonally up to the x-height line.

That's it.

Simple as that.

Are you ready? Let's try again, let me show you.

Start on the x-height line diagonally down to the baseline, and then diagonally back up to the x-height line.

Are you ready? It's your turn.

Get your finger ready on the x-height line.

Let's go diagonal down to the baseline and diagonal up to the x-height line.

One more, ready, diagonally down to the baseline.

Diagonally up to the x-height line.

This is gonna be a nice fun one to do with that elbow.

Let me show you.

Start at the x-height, down diagonally to the baseline, up diagonally to the x-height line.

And now it's your turn.

Are you ready? Get your elbow in position.

Let's go, diagonal down to the baseline.

Diagonal up to the x-height line.

Let's try one more.

Ready, down diagonally to the baseline, up diagonally to the x-height line.

Look at all those beautiful letter v's in the air.

Well done, everyone.

I'm going to share how to form the lowercase letter v.

I'm sitting comfortably, my paper is angled and steady, and my pen is in the tripod grip.

I'm going to start on the x-height line, and I'm going to go diagonally straight down to the baseline and then I'm gonna go diagonally straight up to the x-height line.

Let's try that again.

Starting at the x-height line, diagonally straight down to the baseline, and then diagonally straight up to the x-height line.

One more.

Starting at the x-height line, diagonally down to the baseline, and then diagonally back up to the x-height line.

Check for understanding.

Which is the correct formation of the lowercase letter v? Is it the v you can see above the a, b, or c? Pause the video here.

Well done, it's the v that we can see above the letter c.

This one is starting at the x-height line, going diagonally down to the baseline, and diagonally back up to the x-height line.

Well done if you selected this.

For your task, I would like you to practise forming the lowercase letter v.

First of all, go over the grey examples.

Starting at the x-height line, make a diagonal line down to the baseline, and then make a diagonal line up to the x-height line.

Next, try using the starting dot to form your letter v's, and finally complete two lines of the letter v independently on your tramlines.

Enjoy forming, everyone.

Pause the video here.

How did you get on with forming the lowercase letter v? Did you start on the x-height line? Did you make two straight diagonal lines? Did you keep your pencil on the paper the whole time that you were making each of those letters? Take a look at all your letter v's and circle your best one and celebrate.

You deserve a celebration after all of those wonderful letter v's.

For the next part of our lesson, we'll be looking at formation of the lowercase letter w.

And here it is.

Here is the letter w in the middle of our screen.

Let's look closely at it.

What can you see? Turn to someone next to you and tell them everything you notice about this letter w.

Pause the video here.

Did you notice that the letter w is similar to letter v? It is an x-height letter, and it's also made up of diagonal lines.

what else can we discover about the letter w? The letter w is an x-height letter.

The letter w is a small letter.

It has four diagonal, straight lines.

And it's formed in a similar way to the letter v.

They're in the same letter family.

Check for understanding.

Select the two true statements.

The letter w has a descender.

The letter w is a tall letter.

The letter w is an x-height letter.

The letter w has four diagonal lines.

Pause the video here.

Well done if you selected c and d, the letter w is an x-height letter and the letter w has four diagonal lines.

Let's explore these diagonal lines a little further as we have a go at making the letter w in the air.

It's time to have a go at forming the lowercase letter w.

we are going to begin with forming the letter w using just our finger.

I'll go first.

I'm gonna start on the x-height line and make a diagonal line down to the baseline, then a diagonal line back up to the x-height line, and then I'm gonna repeat the same thing again.

Another diagonal down and up.

That's it.

It's so nice and fun and easy.

It's basically like making a letter v twice right next to each other.

Let's go.

I'm going to start again at the x-height line, diagonal line down to the baseline, up to the x-height line, diagonal down to the baseline, up to the x-height line.

Are you ready? It's your turn.

Go, get your finger on the x-height line.

Let's go, diagonal down to the baseline.

Diagonal up to the x-height line, and we'll repeat that one more time.

Again, ready? Diagonal down to the baseline, up to the x-height, down to the baseline, up to the x-height.

Let's have a go at making the letter w, this time using our fist.

Let me go first.

I'm going to start at the x-height line, down diagonally to the baseline, up diagonally to the x-height.

And I'm gonna repeat that again.

Let me try one more time, ready? From the x-height, diagonal down, diagonal up, diagonal down, diagonal up.

It's your turn.

Get your fist ready in position.

Let's go diagonal down to the baseline, Diagonal up to the x-height, down to the baseline, up to the x-height.

One more time.

This is such a fun letter.

Ready, go down, up, down, up.

Great job, everyone.

Look at those beautiful letter w's hanging in the air.

I'm going to share how to form the lowercase letter w.

I'm sitting comfortably, my paper is angled, and my pen is in the tripod grip.

I'm going to start on the x-height line, and I'm going to go diagonally straight down to the baseline, and then diagonally straight back up to the x-height line.

And then I'm going to repeat this one more time.

Let's try that again.

Start at the x-height line, diagonally down to the baseline, and then diagonally back up to the x-height line.

And then repeat that one more time.

I'll do one final w.

Starting at the x-height line, diagonally down to the baseline, diagonally up to the x-height line, and repeat that again.

Check for understanding.

Which is the correct formation of the lowercase letter w? Is it the w you can see above the a, b, or c? Pause the video here.

Well done, it's the w we can see in the first box above the letter a.

This w is starting correctly at the x-height line, diagonal down to the baseline, diagonal up to the x-height line, back down to the baseline, and back up to the x-height line.

Well done if you selected this w.

For your task, I would like you to practise forming the lowercase letter w.

First of all, go over the grey examples.

Starting at the x-height line make a diagonal line down to the baseline, a diagonal back up to the x-height line, and then repeat that again one more time.

Next, try using the starting dot to make your w's.

And finally, complete two lines of w's independently on your tramlines.

Enjoy forming every single one.

Pause the video here.

How did you get on with forming the lowercase letter w? Did you start at the x-height line? Did you go down and back up twice? Did you make four straight diagonal lines for each w? Did you keep your pencil on the paper for each one? Take a look at all of your w's, circle your best one, and celebrate.

Give yourself a pat on the back.

Well done.

Now we're moving into formation of the lowercase letter x.

And there it is.

Can you see that x in the middle of the screen? X marks the spot.

Let's look closely at it.

What can you see? What can you notice? Tell the person next to you everything you notice about this letter x.

Pause the video here.

Well this is interesting, isn't it? The x is an x-height letter.

Also, it looks like a cross and it has diagonal lines.

Let's find out some more about the letter x.

Letter x is an x-height letter, just like it says in the name.

The letter x is a small letter.

The letter x has two straight diagonal lines.

And the two diagonal lines cross in the centre.

Check for understanding.

Select the two true statements.

Letter x has an ascender.

The letter x has four diagonal lines.

Letter x is an x-height letter.

The letter x has two diagonal lines.

Pause the video here.

Well done if you selected the last two statements, the letter x is an x-height letter and the letter x has two diagonal lines.

Let's explore these some more as we form the letter x in the air.

It's time to have a go at forming the letter x.

Let's get started at the x-height line.

X-height line for the letter x.

I'm going to make a diagonal line down to the baseline, then I'm gonna lift my finger off the imaginary page and place it on the x-height line to the right of where I began.

And then I'm gonna make another diagonal line down to the baseline, and I'll make sure those two lines cross at the centre.

Let me try that again.

Start at the x-height line, diagonal line down to the baseline, lift up my pencil, go back to the x-height line to the right of where I started and make another diagonal line down to the baseline, making sure that they cross in the middle, those two lines.

It's your turn.

Are you ready? Let's go, get your finger in position at the x-height line.

Let's go, diagonal down to the baseline.

Lift up your finger, put it back on the x-height line to the right of where you started and make another diagonal down to the baseline.

Make sure those two lines cross at the centre.

One more at the x-height line, down diagonally to the baseline.

Lift up your pencil, place it to the right of where you started, and another diagonal down to the baseline, making sure they cross in the middle.

Great job.

Let's try the same thing now, but this time we're going to use our elbow to make the letter x.

Okay, let me go first.

Starting at the x-height line diagonal down to the baseline, lifting up my elbow, putting it at the x-height line, and down to the baseline, and I've made sure they're crossed in the middle.

Now it's your turn.

Get your elbow in position, ready? Diagonal down to the baseline, lift it up, place it back on the x-height to the right of where you started.

Diagonal down to the baseline, making sure they're crossing the middle.

One more, ready.

Diagonal to the baseline, lift up, and diagonal again down to the baseline.

Look at all these wonderful x's.

Well done, everybody.

They look great.

I'm going to share how to form the lowercase letter z.

I'm sitting comfortably, my paper is angled, my pen is in the tripod grip.

I'm going to start on the x-height line, and I'm gonna go straight across.

Then, I will draw a straight diagonal line down to the baseline, and then go straight across on the baseline.

Let's try that again.

Starting on the x-height line, a line straight across, and then diagonally down to the baseline, and then another line straight across the baseline.

Let's try one more.

Starting on the x-height line, a line straight across, then diagonally down to the baseline, and then straight across on the baseline.

Check for understanding.

Which is the correct formation of the lowercase letter x? Is it the x you can see above the a, b, or c? Pause the video here.

Well done, it's the x that we can see above the letter c.

This one is starting at the x-height line, diagonally going down to the baseline, and then another diagonal line from the x-height line down to the baseline, and those two lines are crossing in the middle.

Well done.

For your task, I would like you to practise forming lowercase letter x.

First of all, go over the grey examples.

Start at the x-height line, make a diagonal line down to the baseline, lift up your pencil, put it back on the x-height line to the right of where you started, and make another diagonal line down to the baseline, making sure those two lines cross in the middle.

Next, try using the starting dot to help you begin your letter x.

And finally, complete two lines of the letter x independently on your tramlines.

Enjoy forming every single one.

Pause the video here.

So how did you get on with forming the lowercase letter x? Did you start on the x-height line? Did you make two straight diagonal lines? Did they cross in the middle? Did you lift your pencil off the paper after making the first line? Take a look at all of these letter x's and circle your best one and celebrate.

And now we have come to the point in our lesson where we are looking at the formation of the lowercase letter z.

And there it is.

Can you see that letter z in the middle of the screen? Let's look closely at it.

What can you see? What can you notice? Turn to the person next to you and tell them everything you notice about the letter z.

Pause the video here.

Did you notice that it's an x-height letter? It has straight lines and it has a zigzag shape.

What else can we find out about the letter z? The letter z is an x-height letter.

The letter z is a small letter.

The letter z has a zigzag pattern.

The letter z has one diagonal line.

The letter z has three straight lines.

Check for understanding.

Select the two true statements.

The letter z is an x-height letter.

The letter z is a tall letter.

The letter z has a zigzag pattern.

The letter z has three diagonal lines.

Pause the video here.

Well done if you selected a and c, the letter z is an x-height letter and the letter z has a zigzag pattern.

And now it's time to form the letter z in the air.

I'm going to go first, and then it will be your turn.

I'm going to use my finger to begin at the x-height line, and I'm going to make a line straight across the x-height line, then I'm going to make a diagonal line down to the baseline, and then I'm going to go straight across on the baseline.

So it's got a really nice zigzag shape.

Let me show you again.

On the x-height line, I'll go straight across, and then a diagonal line down to the baseline and then straight across on the baseline.

Are you ready for your turn? Get your finger in position at the x-height line.

Let's go.

Straight across on the x-height, down diagonally to the baseline, and then straight across on the baseline.

One more time.

On the x-height line straight across, diagonal line down to the baseline, and straight across on the baseline.

Fantastic.

Let's have a go of forming letter z using our nose.

Okay, I'm gonna start at the x-height line.

I'm gonna go across the x-height line.

I'm gonna go diagonally down to the baseline and then across on the baseline.

Let me show you again.

I'm at the x-height line.

I'm going across the x-height.

I'm going diagonally down to the baseline and then I'm going across on the baseline.

It's your turn.

Get that nose ready, ready for writing the letter z.

Let's go, across the x-height, diagonally down to the baseline, across on the baseline.

One more, ready? Across, diagonally down, and across.

Fantastic, all these zigzagging z's all over hanging around in the air.

I love them.

Well done, everyone.

Check for understanding which is the correct formation of the lowercase letter z.

Is it the z you can see above the a, the b, or the c? Pause the video here.

Well done, it's the letter z above the b.

This one is starting at the x-height line.

It's going across, then it's going diagonally down to the baseline, and then across on the baseline.

Well done if you selected this letter z.

For your task, I'd like you to practise forming lowercase letter z.

First of all, go over the grey examples.

Starting at the x-height line, going across on the x-height line, then diagonally down to the baseline, and then across the baseline.

Next, try using the starting dots to help you form the letter z.

And finally, complete two lines of the zigzagging z independently on your tramlines.

Enjoy every one.

Pause the video here.

How did you get on with forming the lowercase letter z? Did you start on the x-height line? Did you go straight across and then diagonally down to the baseline and then straight across again? Did you keep your pencil on the paper for each letter z? Take a look at all these wonderful letter z's on your page, and circle your best one and celebrate.

In this lesson formation of v, w, x, and z, we have covered the following.

V, w, x, and z are all x-height letters.

V, w, x, and z all have straight diagonal lines.

The letters v and w are formed by going diagonally down and back up.

The letter x is formed with two diagonal lines that cross in the middle.

The letter z has a zigzag pattern.
