Hello everyone and welcome to lesson five in our units about our news report.

In today's lesson, we're really going to focus on one of our reading skills.

So in our last unit, we met summarising seal who helped us to find the key points of each bit of our paragraph and our whole created story.

Today, we're going to be meeting retrieval rabbit, and she's going to help us to find the key information we need in order to answer questions.

Retrieval rabbit told me we will be able to find the answers in the text.

We just have to be text detectives in order to get them.

Today, it's a little bit of a gloomy day.

And sometimes when I wake up on a gloomy day, it can make me a bit sad.

So I always try and think of things that I'm grateful for.

And I also try and think of activities I can do inside that will cheer me up.

I know that I am grateful for the roof over my head and for the delicious meals I'm going to eat today.

I know what will cheer me up is reading a good book and perhaps watching a movie that I really like.

Can you tell me what are you grateful for and what type of things do you do to cheer yourself up when you're feeling a little bit sad.

In today's lesson, you're going to need a piece of paper to write on, a pencil, a pen to write with and your brain to be helping retrieval rabbit and me find all the answers in the text for the questions that we are asked.

We're going to start off with a spelling activity.

And this is our last day looking at the same spelling rule as we've been focusing on so far in this unit.

We're then going to do a strategy check, this is to focus on how we read really well, but also to focus on our reading skill today of retrieving.

Then we're going to be reading sections of our news report together and then practise our retrieving skills by answering some questions.

So we're going to continue looking at common exception words.

Today, I'm going to show you some pictures and I'm hoping that you'll be able to guess which words they represent.

Let's start with this one, what word do you think this picture represents? Think you got it, clothes.

Well done, next picture.

Now, I'm going to give you a clue here, the answer is not to cheetah, it's something about the cheetah.

Fast, that's it, a cheetah runs very fast.

Next one bit easier.

Got it, grass, well done.

Final one, good, it's gold.

So with our four words, sometimes we just need to see them quite a few times over and over again and read them in books to get to know how to spell them.

That's the problem with common acception words, we can't rely on the rules to help us, we just need to learn them.

So we've seen them a few times and we've guessed them.

Now I want you to practise writing them in a sentence.

And when we write words over and over again, with the correct spelling, then they get embedded in our brain and we remember how to spell them.

So I would like you to write a sentence for each of these words, pause the video and press play when you've done it.

Superstar, I bet those words are in your heads now and the next time you come to spell them in a piece of writing, they'll be right there waiting for you.

Let's move on to our strategy check.

So for our strategy check, we have retrieval rabbit helping us today and she's friends with summarising seal.

She knew that we needed a little bit of help understanding what retrieving is, but also doing it.

So she's going to help us explain and then she's going to ask us some questions so that we can practise.

Retrieval rabbit says, "You will need to look in a text to retrieve," which means find, "the information that is needed "to answer different questions." So when we retrieving, it means we're going and we're getting the right piece of information and four of this, is going to be somewhere in the text.

We just have to be a detective and read it really carefully.

In order to read it really carefully, we need to look at the screen or look at me, we need to be listening the key words and the information, and we need to be following along with our finger.

If we do that really successfully, then we will find it much easier to answer the retrieval questions.

Let's read through our news reports in chunks and answer some retrieval questions.

So reporter, good evening, my name is Miss Weerasekera and I'm reporting for you live from earth Oak Academy News.

I'm here today to bring you the latest updates on the mysterious disappearance of a much-loved musical harp that was reportedly stolen just hours ago on earth.

According to our sources, the harp originally belonged to Apollo, God of sun and light and was last seen and heard playing it's beautiful melodies.

Witnesses that believe the harp was stolen during the middle of the day, as they recall the sun shining high in the sky.

So here's retrieval rabbit and she's asking us our first question.

She said, "What time of day was the harp stolen?" Was it in the morning, during the night or in the middle of the day? I'm going to go back to this slide to give you a moment, to have a look through and to figure out what time of day was the harp stolen.

Hopefully you have found the answer and now you can make your decision, ready? That's right, it was it in the middle of the day, Wasn't it? If I look at right at the bottom here, it says witnesses believe the harp was stolen during the middle of the day as they recall the sun shining high in the sky.

And that's retrieval, it asks us a question and we just need to find it, it's already there, we're just looking for the clue.

Next section, one eye witness states that they saw Hades, God of death lurking nearby the scene.

Hades has previously been entangled with the police as a suspect in other strange disappearance cases.

Hades remains the number one suspect in this case and any information known about his whereabouts should be reported immediately to the police.

So the next question says, what should you do if you know where Hades is? The sentence stem says, if you know where Hades is, you should.

I'm going to let you have a look at this screen.

What does it say we should do if we know where he is? Say the sentence out loud with the sentence stem.

Fantastic, yes, if you know where Hades is, you should call the police immediately.

It says that right at the bottom here, his whereabouts should be reported immediately to the police.

Well done, if you found that answer.

Let's carry on reading.

With me now, I have Apollo himself to shed some light on the details of his case.

Firstly Apollo, I'd just like to express my condolences for your last harp.

Can you tell us a bit more about what this harp means to you and how you're dealing with this difficult situation.

Yes, thank you Miss Weerasekera, as I'm also the God of music, the harp is vital to my role.

Not only is it a beautiful instrument, but it brings joy to myself and others through its beautiful music.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to hear it's sweet melodies will know the uplifting effect it has.

And to be quite honest, I'm feeling depressed now that it's gone.

So for our next retrieval question, we have to take the statements that are true, and it says to take two of the statements.

That means two are going to be true and two are going to be false.

Let's read them, Apollo is the God of music.

Is that true or false? Only Apollo can hear the harp's music.

Apollo is upset that the harp is missing.

The harp's music makes people feel sad.

So have a look and think about which ones are true and which ones are false.

When you're ready, you can press pause and go back and have a look at the text and do these and then press play when you're ready to see the answer.

Let's have a look.

Did you get that? It does tell us the Apollo is the God of music and it tells us the Apollo is upset that harp is missing.

We know that other people can hear the music because he tells us that it is uplifting and other people like to listen to its music too.

That's the same as the last one, the harp's music makes people feel sad, he said the opposite, didn't he? So that makes people feel uplifted and happier.

I'm so sorry to hear that Apollo.

Now we've noticed that the sun has disappeared, as the God of sun and light, is there anything you can do to bring it back out? " I may be the God of sun and light, "but my ability to control them "is completely dependent on my mood.

"Without that harp I just can't see myself "having the energy or the drive "to bring that sun back up into the sky.

"That's why I'm so keen to get my harp back.

I know that the darkness makes people sad and the plants will eventually waste away, leaving us nothing to eat.

So for this one, it says, give two reasons why the darkness is bad.

So I'm just going to give you a little bit of time on this slide to have a look for that answer of why two reasons that the darkness is bad or negative.

You can pause the video here, think about what sentences you would write or say or sentences out loud, and then press play if you think you've got it.

Well done, the darkness makes people sad, that's one reason, and the plants will die and people will have nothing to eat.

That's the second reason.

Well done, if you managed to find those two in the text.

So this situation could get a lot worse not only for you, but for us all.

Hades is currently the number one suspect in this case, do you think he's responsible? If you could send him a message, what would it be?" Listen, I had multiple run-ins with Hades in the past, and we all know that he was responsible for the disappearance of the Persephone a few years ago.

In that situation, Zeus was able to intervene and reason with Hades.

So I'm hoping he'll be able to step in here and help me out.

I would go and speak to Hades myself, but that didn't work out too well last time I tried.

At this point, I'd be willing to compromise and share the harp, I just hope that he can see sense before it's too late.

So this question, we are doing a matching activity.

So draw lines to match the character up with the action.

So you've got Hades, Zeus and Apollo, and on the right we have, is willing to share the harp, should help negotiate with Hades and is responsible for the disappearance of Persephone.

So I'd like you to pause in a second and decide which character matches up with which action and then press play and you think you've figured it out.

Fantastic, let's have a look at the answer.

So the first one, Hades is responsible for the disappearance Persephone.

Zeus should help negotiate with Hades and Apollo is willing to share the harp.

Well done, if you managed to match those up correctly.

Final bit here, there you have it.

A bad situation then looks like it could get a whole lot worse.

There are hopes that Hades will return the harp or that Zeus will intervene to negotiate a deal.

As the sky darkens here, it certainly feels like many are starting to lose hope about to quick fix.

Again, if you have any information about the whereabouts of the harp or Hades, then please contact the police as soon as possible.

So I challenge task here says, if the sun disappeared, would you feel similarly or differently to the people in the news report? The sentence stem says, I would feel similarly or differently, so you can choose which one applies to you to the people in the news report because.

I'm going to help you out a little bit with retrieving the information here.

And it says as the sky darkens here, it certainly feels like many are starting to lose hope.

So the way that people in the news reports are feeling, is that they're losing hope about the fact that the sun has disappeared.

So your challenge is, do you think you would lose hope if the sun disappeared or would you act or feel differently? Pause here and then press play when you think you've made your decision.
