Hello, super storytellers and welcome to this English lesson.

My name is Ms. Cashin, and this is less than five of our unit, where we're learning about the story, "The Eagle Who Thought He Was A Chicken" We know that story really, really well now.

So today we are going to be making predictions in a different story.

We've got the same characters in it.

We're still going to meet Mother Hen and brother and sister eagle, but it will be a different story.

So we're going to use our amazing reading skills to predict what will happen next.

We're going to start today's lesson with some spellings.

Then we're going to do a strategy check where we think about what we're going to have to do today to be amazing readers.

Then we're going to read some parts of our new story, and we're going to make some predictions about what might happen next.

These are the things that you're going to need in today's lesson.

You're going to need an exercise book or a piece of paper and something to write with a pen or a pencil.

When we're doing our predictions, you might want to pause the video and to say them, but you might want to write them down, as well.

So it's great to have our paper and pencil already.

Of course, you're going to need your brilliant, brilliant, brain as well, but hopefully you already have that.

So if you need to go and get your pencil or paper, you can pause the video now to go and get it.

So let's get started with our spellings.

So far, in this unit, we have been learning about the /L/ sound spelled I-L at the end of words.

I've got a sentence here that uses one of those words that we have learned this week.

Let's see if we can figure out what that word is.

The farmer could smell the fresh hay through his /n/.

what word could that be? The farmer could smell the fresh hay through his /n/.

It starts with a /n/ sound and it ends in /il/.

Have a think.

Now we're going to check our strategy so that we're all ready for our reading.

We need our magnet eyes to follow through as I read.

And for when you read independently.

you need your listening ear to listen to me read, and then for you to use your sounds when you read independently.

And you're going to need your finding finger.

Cause you're going to be saying, "I predict that this will happen because it says this." So you will be looking for clues that help you for your prediction.

You use it for your sounds, as well.

We are all ready for our reading.

So now we're going to read the text.

And we're going to make some predictions.

Here's the first bit of our new story.

I'm going to read it through.

And then when you pause the video to make your prediction, where we say, what do we think is going to happen next and why? You need to make sure that you read it through yourself, especially if you're going to use your finding finger to find the word that you think tell you what might happen next.

Will give you a clue.

Let's have our magnet eyes on our first word.

Oh, it's one of our tricky words.

Can you tell me what it is? Oh lots of people knew it, one.

Fantastic, okay.

Magnet eyes, here we go.

One day, the brother and sister eagle were soaring above the farm.

They looked down at the chicken coop and saw Mother Hen.

"Sister, there's Mother Hen!" said the brother eagle excitedly.

"Fantastic!" said his sister.

Brilliant listening.

I'm going to read it through again and you can try and join in if you would like to.

Here we go.

One day, the brother and sister eagle were soaring above the farm.

They looked down at the chicken coop and saw Mother Hen.

"Sister, there's Mother Hen!" said the brother eagle excitedly.

"Fantastic!" said his sister.

Okay, let's have a think.

What do we think will happen next in our story? I've got some sentence stems underneath me.

The first one says, I think they will.

because If you have one idea about what might happen next, you could challenge yourself to think of another idea.

You could say they might.

because When you get to the because bit of your sentence, you need to think, "well, why do I think that?" What does it say? So I think they will.

because and look for what it would say.

So you pause the video now to do your prediction.

I think they will Oh, fantastic.

I heard lots of learners say the same idea.

I heard lots of learners say that they think the brother and sister eagle will fly down to see Mother Hen because the brother eagle said it excitedly.

He said "There's Mother Hen!" excitedly.

So that made them think that he would like to go and see her.

I also heard some people say that because sister eagle said "Fantastic!" She was definitely looking forward to seeing Mother Hen, as well.

I also heard some people who had a different idea.

Some people thought they might fly and get her something and then take it back to see her.

They might think "There's Mother Hen, I would like to give her a present." I'm going to fly out further into the forest, get something and bring it back to her.

I didn't hear anyone say, that they wouldn't want to go and see Mother Hen because we all knew how excited they were.

Well done with your first prediction.

Here's the second bit of our story.

I'm going to read it first.

But remember when you pause the video, try to read it independently.

Magnet eyes on the first word.

Here we go.

The two eagles flew down to see Mother Hen and so many of you were right with your predictions.

So many of you used your finding finger to say, brother eagle is excited and sister eagle said fantastic.

So I think they're going to go and see Mother Hen and they have.

Well done.

I was so excited just then I forgot to carry on reading.

So I'll give it another go.

Magnet eyes on the first word, The.

The two eagles flew down to see Mother Hen and landed smoothly in the chicken coop.

"My darlings, it is so good to see you!" said Mother Hen.

"It's lovely to see you too," said Sister Eagle.

Suddenly, the chicken gasped.

She could see a man with a gun walking towards them.

We have already met a character with a gun in the story, The Eagle And The Chicken.

Do you know who it was? Have a think.

This might help you with your prediction.

Okay, our sentence starters, I've made them a little bit more tricky now instead of, I think they will, We're going to say, I predict they will because, if you have one prediction, you could think of another one.

They might.

So you can pause the video now, read through again and think, what do you think they will do next.

Well done for making your second prediction, storytelling superstars.

What do you predict will happen now? I predict.

So many amazing ideas, a few more different ones this time.

I heard one learner say, I predict that they will hide immediately because the man with the gun is probably the hunter who killed their parents.

So this learner predicted that they will hide.

Another learner predicted that they will fly away before the hunter sees them.

Another one predicted that Mother Hen will help them to come up with a plan because she loves them so much and is such a fantastic mother.

Whilst I'm thinking so carefully about who that man is, and what they might do.

A lot of you noticed that Mother Hen gasped.

So it shows how scared she is and that she'll probably therefore, do something to make the situation better.

Let's see what happens next.

Put your magnet eyes on the first word, That.

"That man is the Hunter," said Mother Hen.

"He loves to shoot eagles as his prize bird!" The eagles looked terrified.

Their knees were shaking.

They knew if they flew up and away, he would shoot them instantly.

So we were right that he is the Hunter and that the eagles need to do something.

But lots of us thought they would fly away.

That was a really sensible prediction.

But Mother Hen has now told us he's too close.

If they fly away, he'll see them.

And he was shoot them straight away.

So what do you predict they would do instead? I predict they will.

because and they might.

because Think about what you know about Mother Hen and the eagles.

So pause the video now, read it independently and make your prediction.

You have been such fantastic readers today.

I heard some children say that they found it quite difficult to think about what would happen if they couldn't fly away, but they thought they might be able to hide in the chicken house, because we know they're in a chicken coop.

I heard somebody say that they might get the farmer to help them.

I had one learner say that they might try to pretend to be chickens.

I heard one learner say that because their knees were shaking, they think the eagles are too scared, actually, and they're just going to be stuck there.

Unable to do anything.

So lots of different ideas.

And I love that some of you thought to our other story, as well as what we've heard in this story, it was brilliant.

Bringing those two bits of information together.

Let's find out what happens.

Now we're going to find out what happens at the end of our new story.

So put your magnet eyes on the first word, Wait.

"Wait my darlings," said Mother Hen.

"Do you still remember how to act like a chicken?" "Of course, we love it" said the eagles.

So they clucked and scratched and ate and the Hunter never noticed.

That's how they solved the problem of seeing the Hunter again.

They thought actually he might just out of the corner of his eye, not notice us and think we're just chickens because we're so good at acting like chickens.
