Hello everyone my name is Miss Barron.

I love stories, I love telling stories, I love writing stories and I love making up stories.

In lesson one, I told you one of my favourite stories, the Unlucky Man.

And because we're learning all about character in this unit, I thought we would start today singing a song about the character of the Unlucky man.

Now, the chorus is the song that he sings in the story.

And I think you know that already by now.

So you can join in with me and sing that.

So this song goes like this.

Listen to me sing it the first time, join in with the chorus and then we'll sing it a second time and you can join in with me.

He moans so much, that he even wakes himself up when he's snoring to moan.

We also learn that he wants more money.

We learn that he's lonely and sad.

We learn that he's a bit jealous of his friends as well.

Don't we? He says, oh, my friends are so happy.

They're happy as can be.

Why can't I be like that? And we've learn that he's just really a negative person.

Isn't he? He just thinks so negatively.

Thinks the worst all the time.

So there's a way that we can use song to learn about character.

So you are going to become the storyteller yourself today.

You are going to learn to tell the story of the Unlucky Man from memory.

So that you can tell it in your own way.

So how are we going to do that? Well, first, we're going to hear the story again.

Then we're going to map the story.

Then step the story and finally speak the story.

So by the end of today's lesson, you will be able to tell the story in your own words.

So what are you going to need for today's lesson? You will need a piece of paper or an exercise book to write on, and a pencil or a pen to write with.

This is the story of the Unlucky Man.

Once there was a man who was always moaning to his friends.

"Oh, my house is too small.

My job is so boring.

Oh, just don't have enough friends.

I'll never get married.

Oh, why am I so lonely? Why am I so poor? Oh, I just don't have any luck." Finally.

His friends got so fed up, listening to his constant moaning.

That one of them said, "Look, why don't you go and ask The Wise Man at the top of the sacred mountain, maybe he'll have some answers for you." The Unlucky Man liked this idea and agreed.

And so he set off walking, as fast as he could to the mountain.

And as he walked he sang a song, ♪ I am so unlucky, unlucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I am so unlucky.

Nothing works for me.

♪ And he walked and he walked and he walked until he got to the mountain.

And when he got to the mountain, he began to climb.

And as a climbed, he sang his song.

Sing it with me this time.

♪ I am so unlucky, unlucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I am so unlucky.

Nothing works for me.

♪ After a day climbing the mountain, the Unlucky Man came to a thin, sick old wolf lying on the ground of the path.

"Where are you going?" asked the sick wolf.

"Oh, I'm going to the top of the mountain to ask the Wise Man why I don't have any luck." "Well," "can you ask him why I am so thin and weak too?" "Oh, okay." said the Unlucky Man impatiently, and carried on up the mountain singing his song.

♪ I am so unlucky, unlucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I am so unlucky.

Nothing works for me.

♪ After another day, climbing the mountain, the Unlucky Man came to a thin and leafless tree.

"Where are you going?" asked the tree.

"Oh, I'm going to the top of the mountain to ask the Wise Man why I don't have any luck?" "Well, can you ask him why I'm so thin and leafless too?" "Oh, okay." Said the Unlucky Man and impatiently, and carried on up the mountain singing his song.

♪ I am so unlucky, unlucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I am so unlucky.

Nothing works for me.

♪ After another day, climbing the mountain.

He came to a cottage at the side of the path and standing in the doorway of that cottage, was a lovely young woman.

She smiled at him and waved.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"I'm going to the top of the mountain to ask the Wise Man why I don't have any luck." "Well, could you ask him why I'm so sad and lonely too?" "Oh, okay." said the Unlucky Man impatiently, and carried on up the mountain hurrying now singing his song as he went.

♪ I am so unlucky, unlucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I am so unlucky.

Nothing works for me.

♪ Finally, he reached the top of the mountain.

And he entered the hut of the wisest of men.

"I've come to ask, why I don't have any luck?" said the man.

The Wise Man replied, "You have lots of luck, you just needs to look around you to find it." "Oh, really? Great!" said the Unlucky Man.

"In that case, I'm going to rush off home, straight away and start looking immediately." And then he remembered the three questions of the others.

He asked the Wise Man and got his reply.

Soon after the Unlucky man was running down that mountain desperate to get home, to find his luck.

And as he ran, he sang a song.

♪ I am so lucky, lucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I'll just look around, so bad that I'll see.

♪ Now, after a day running down that mountain, he came to the cottage at the side of the path, and there he saw the woman.

"Well, did you ask him?" said the lovely young woman.

"Yes.

He says that you are sad because you are lonely.

And so you should find a husband." The young woman blushed and looked him up and down.

"Well, are you married? We could get married.

Would you like that?" "Oh, I'm sorry.

But I just don't have time for this right now.

I have got to rush home and start looking for my luck.

And he ran off down the mountain singing his song.

♪ I am so lucky, lucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I'll just look around, so bad that I'll see.

♪ And after another day running down that mountain, he came to the thin and leafless tree.

"Well, did you ask him?" asked the tree.

"Yes.

He says, that you are thin and leafless because there is a box of buried treasure under your roots, which means that they can't grow.

You need to ask someone to dig it up for you and then you'll be fine." "Well, would you dig it up for me? If you do, you can keep all the buried treasure.

Would you like that?" "Oh, I'm sorry." said the Unlucky Man impatiently, "But I just do not have time for this right now.

I have got to get home and start looking for my luck." And so he ran off down the mountain singing his song.

♪ I am so lucky, lucky as can be.

♪ ♪ I'll just look around, so bad that I'll see.

♪ And after another day he came to the thin, sick old wolf lying on the ground for the path.

"Well, did you ask him?" asked the wolf? "Yes.

He says that you are ill because you are hungry and you should eat the first food that comes along." And so the wolf did just that.

And that was the end of the Unlucky Man.

And that is the end of this story.

Okay.

So now we are going to draw a quick story map to help us remember the key events of the story in order.

So let's start at the beginning.

At the start of the story, we have the Unlucky Man, don't we? Who is just constantly moaning to all of his friends.

So there he is looking miserable and grumpy, constantly moaning.

So then he decides to go up the top of the mountain, to visit the Wise Man and ask him why he doesn't have any luck.

And on his way, he meets a wolf.

Doesn't he? The first character that he meets is a wolf.

A sick, thin old wolf.

After that he meets a thin and leafless tree.

And on the third day, he meets a lovely young woman who is standing in the doorway of her cottage, at the side of the path.

And finally he gets to the top of the mountain.

Doesn't he? And he sees the Wise Man in his hut and he asks him why he doesn't have any luck? The wise man replies that his luck is all about him.

He just needs to look and then he'll find it.

And on the way back down the mountain, he's rushing back down.

Isn't he? To find his luck.

So we will draw the wind behind him to show that he's rushing.

And then, he meets the young woman again, doesn't he? He meets the young woman on the way back down.

And she asks if he would like to marry her, she asked if he would like to marry her.

But he says, "No, I haven't got time to think about that.

I've got to get down the mountain." And then the next day he comes across the thin and leafless tree again.

The thin and leafless tree offers him, the treasure that is buried under the roots.

But again, the Unlucky Man doesn't have time to think about that.

He's got to get home and find his luck.

And finally, on the third day, he bumps into the wolf again, doesn't he? The wolf lying on the side of the path and tells him that, well, he's sick and thin because he's hungry.

And so he needs to eat the first food that comes along.

And just like that, the wolf eats up, the Unlucky Man.

So there's the knife and fork to show that he's going to have him for his dinner.

And that is a story map for the Unlucky Man.

So you can see that my drawings are very simple and they are clearly ordered with arrows.

Remember your drawings don't need to be exactly the same as mine.

You can do your own as long as you have one, for each key moment in the story.

You've got your story maps.

The pictures are really useful for reminding us what happens in the story.

So we're going to use the pictures now to talk our maps.

I'm going to talk my map first, and then it's going to be your turn to talk yours.

So listen carefully.

Once there was a man who moaned about everything, he thought he was so unlucky.

So one day, he decided to go up to the top of the sacred mountain and ask the Wise Man there, why he didn't have any luck.

On his way, he met a thin, sick old wolf.

And the wolf asked him to find out from the Wise Man, why he was so thin and sick.

The next day he met a thin leafless tree.

And the tree asked him to find out from the Wise Man, why he was so thin and leafless.

And on the third day, he met a lovely young woman standing in the doorway of her cottage.

She asked him to find out from the Wise Man, why she was so lonely and sad.

Finally, the Unlucky Man reached the top of the mountain and asked the Wise Man, why he was so unlucky? And the Wise Man replied, "You have lots of luck.

You just need to look around you to find it." And then he found out the answers to the questions by the wolf, the woman and the tree.

So hurriedly, he rushed it down the mountain, excited to get to the bottom and find his luck.

And then he came across the young woman again, and the young woman asked him to marry her.

And the Unlucky man replied, "I've got no time for that.

I've got to get home and find my luck." The next day he came across the thin and leafless tree again.

And the tree said, "Well, if there's buried treasure under my roots, if that's what's stopping me from growing, then why don't you dig it up? You can keep the treasure yourself?" But the Unlucky man replied, "Oh, I don't have time for that.

I've got to get home right away and find my luck." And then came across the thin, sick old wolf, lying on the path once again and said, "Look, the reason that you're so sick is because you're hungry.

So you need to eat the first food that comes along." And the wolf did just that.

He ate up the Unlucky man.

That was the end of him.

And that's the end of the story.

So I would like you now to have a go at talking your story maps in your own words.

Now we are going to step the story, to really help us remember it by doing actions.

I'd like you to watch my stepping carefully.

And at the end, I'm going to ask you what your favourite action was.

So this is my stepping for the Unlucky man.

Oh, why am I so unlucky? Climbing the mountain.

Thin, sick old wolf.

Thin, leafless tree.

Lovely young woman.

Look around you to find your luck.

Rushing down the mountain.

Will you marry me? Would you like my treasure? You should eat the first food that comes along.

The wolf did just that.

So that's my stepping of the story, the Unlucky Man.

My favourite action was the action I did for the ending.

When I went like this, oh, the Wolf did just that.

That's because I really liked the ending of this story like I said in lesson one.

For me, it's a really surprising twist and it makes it really satisfying.

Now I would like you to step the story yourself, use your story map to help you.

You don't have to use the same actions that I did.

You can do if you would like to, or you can make them your own.

As long as you have one for every picture on your map.

Make sure that your actions are clear.

And you can put a sentence with them like I did, to remind you what happens in each key moment.

You might like to step for somebody else in your household or for one of your toys and ask them to tell you what their favourite action was that you did.

So today you've heard the story again, you've mapped the story.

You've stepped the story.

Now you're ready to speak the story.

So now you're ready to have a go at telling it in as much detail as you can in your own words.

You might like to rewind the video and watch me tell it again.

But you are ready now to have a go at telling the story of the Unlucky Man yourself.

As you know, we are learning about character in this unit.

And one thing that's really important for us to think about as storytellers and story writers, is to be really clear about the main quality of our character in our story.

And one way that we can do that, is to think how we would sum up our character in just one word.

So if we were to pick one word that best describes our character, one word that shows what they're really like, what would that word be? So I've got five words on the screen to help you think about this.

You might like to use one of these or you might have a different idea.

You might have a different word.

The words on the screen are foolish, impatient, selfish, greedy, and ungrateful.

So have a think about this.

If you were to sum up the character of the Unlucky Man in just one word.

Which word do you think best describes him and why? Pause the video now and have a think about that.

I am really interested to hear your ideas on this one.

So can you tell me in a full sentence.

The word that best describes him would be.

Oh, lots of different ideas.

That it's really interesting to hear.

So I think the Unlucky Man is a mixture of all of those qualities really.

I think he's impatient, greedy, ungrateful, selfish and foolish.

But if I was to pick one above all the others, for me, it would be foolish.

And here's why.

I would choose the word foolish because, when the Wise Man tells him that his luck is all around him, he just needs to look for it.

And then he goes down the mountain, and that luck is offered to him on a plate.

The woman offers to marry him.

The tree offers him his treasure.

The Unlucky Man is a huge fool.

Because he just doesn't pay attention to what's right in front of his face.

He is so obsessed with the idea that he needs to get down the mountain to find his luck, that he just doesn't realise that the luck is right in front of him.

And so for that reason, I think he is a huge fool.

And that's why at the end, when he says to the wolf, "Well, the Wise Man says that you're ill because you're hungry.

You need to just eat the first food that comes along." That's why he eats him.

So, the Unlucky Man for me, more than anything else, is foolish.

And we're going to try and bring out the foolish nature of the Unlucky Man in our next lessons.

And that brings us to the end of today's learning.
