Hi, everyone.
My name is Ms. Voyle, and welcome to today's lesson where you are going to be planning part two of the build-up of the "Firework Maker's Daughter." This lesson is based on the 2018 Penguin Random House UK edition of the "Firework Maker's Daughter" by Philip Pullman, and you may wish to refer to it.
Pause the video and get your copy of the book now.
Great.
Now, I know you have the book with you.
During this lesson, you'll need to be listening and looking carefully.
There'll be tasks where you need somebody to talk to, and you will also need a piece of paper and pen or pencil for writing.
I hope you're feeling excited and ready to learn.
Let's get started.
The learning outcome for today's lesson is: I can plan a well-structured paragraph for part two of the build-up.
Here are our key words.
Let's practise saying them.
My turn, your turn.
Build-up.
Ambitious vocabulary.
Show and tell.
Plan.
Well done.
Let's take a look at their definitions.
The build-up in a narrative is the building of action and suspense that leads up to the climax.
Ambitious vocabulary is high-level language in writing that meets the text's purpose.
Show and tell is a writing technique for showing a character's feelings with description of their actions, body language, and facial expressions.
And a plan is a framework that writers create before they write a section or whole text.
There are two parts to today's lesson.
In the first part, we will be preparing to plan and in the second part, you will be writing your plan.
So let's begin with preparing to plan.
"The Firework-Maker's Daughter" can be structured like this: opening, build-up, climax, resolution.
In this lesson, we are planning the build-up.
We are planning part two of the build-up.
The purpose of the build-up is to move the story forward and describe the main character's journey.
The build-up in chapter four builds suspense around whether Lila will overcome challenges to reach her destination.
I am going to summarise the key moments for Lila in the build-up.
Lila tried to sleep but she couldn't.
She considered giving up.
Lila continued.
The ground she was walking on became much steeper and she realised she was climbing the mountain.
Lila slipped and fell down the mountain, losing a sandal in the process.
She continued to climb higher, braving the heat with bare feet.
Lila kept sliding backwards and she experienced such physical pain she felt like she might die.
A huge stone rolled down towards Lila, but it's missed her and the entrance to the grotto was uncovered.
You have already written part one of your build-up, which covered points one, two, and three.
You will be planning the second part of the build-up today.
In part two, you will be focusing on these key moments in Lila's journey.
She continued to climb, braving the heat.
We know at this point, she was exhausted, but remained committed.
She slid backwards and she experienced pain like she'd die.
We know that she felt agony and despair at this point in her journey.
And a rock rolled towards her but missed her, and the grotto was uncovered.
We know that she felt relief and excitement, because she'd made it to her destination.
You will be developing precise and ambitious vocabulary to describe this part of Lila's journey.
Let's check your understanding.
Order the following moments in Lila's journey: A, she kept sliding backwards, the pain was so bad she felt like she might die; B, a rock roll towards her but missed her, the entrance to the grotto was uncovered; C, she continued to climb higher, braving the heat.
Pause the video and number these one to three to show their order now.
Let's check the answers.
First, she continued to climb higher, braving the heat.
Second, she kept sliding backwards.
The pain was so bad she felt like she might die.
Third, a rock rolled towards her but missed her.
The entrance to the grotto was uncovered.
Well done for ordering these correctly.
The use of precise and ambitious vocabulary helps to create vivid imagery in the reader's mind.
It is important we choose a range of adjectives, verbs, and adverbs that enhance the description of Lila's journey in the build-up.
It also allows us to convey Lila's emotions through show and tell.
For example, instead of saying "Lila continued to climb higher and the ground got hotter," we could say, "Lila slowly pulled herself back up and continued to climb higher.
Sweat dripped down her body as she braved the unforgiving scorching heat." We have used precise verbs and adverbs to describe Lila's movements.
Slowly pulled herself back up.
Sweat dripped down her body.
And we have an expanded noun phrase, which gives great detail about the setting: unforgiving, scorching heat.
These are examples of ambitious adjectives.
Let's look at each moment in more detail.
She can continued to climb, braving the heat.
We know she was exhausted but committed.
We can use precise and ambitious vocabulary to describe the character and the setting at this point.
For ambitious adjectives, we might say, "exhausted, aching body" to describe what Lila's body felt like, and "neverending, perilous" climb.
This would let the reader know that Lila felt like the climb was neverending, and perilous is an ambitious adjective meaning dangerous.
For precise verbs and adverbs, we might say, "She slowly pulled herself back up." This would give the reader clues about how she's feeling if she needs to do that movement slowly.
And, "braved the scorching heat." This is an example of show and tell.
If we know that she is having to be brave in the scorching heat, this lets the reader know that she does not find this journey easy.
Let's look at the next moment.
Lila slid backwards.
She experienced pain like she'd die.
We know she felt agony and despair.
Let's look at some precise and ambitious vocabulary for this part.
For ambitious adjectives, we might say, "suffocating, thick air." This provides rich description about the setting and the impact that it had on Lila.
We might say, "unbearable, torturous pain." These are ambitious adjectives that let us know just how much agony Lila was experiencing.
For precise verbs and adverbs: "barely breathe," and, "wondered if she'd survive." This is an example of show and tell, by providing the reader with a thought that Lila had.
For the next moment, a rock rolled towards her but missed her, and the grotto was uncovered.
We know she felt relief and excitement.
What precise and ambitious vocabulary could we use here? For ambitious adjectives, we might say, "gigantic, tumbling rock" to create vivid imagery of that rock rolling towards her.
And, "utter relief," to let the reader know just how relieved Lila felt when the rock missed her.
And for precise verbs and adverbs, we might say, "thought the worst," and, "surged forwards." This movement description of surging forwards is another example of show and tell.
By describing the change in Lila's movements, because she had been dragging herself up slowly to suddenly surging forwards, lets the reader know that there is a shift in her emotions and her energy because she has uncovered the entrance to the grotto.
Let's check your understanding.
True or false? Using precise verbs and adverbs only tells us what a character is doing.
Pause the video and select your answer now.
That is false.
Well done.
Can you justify your answer? A, precise verbs and adverbs provide greater detail about a character's feelings through show and tell.
B, precise verbs and adverbs form expanded noun phrases.
Pause the video and select your answer.
The answer is A.
Well done.
Precise verbs and adverbs can show and tell the reader what a character is feeling.
We use adjectives before a noun to form an expanded noun phrase.
It's time for your first task.
Fill in the blanks with precise and ambitious vocabulary.
I will read this to you now.
Lila pulled herself back up and continued to climb higher.
Sweat down her body, as she the heat.
Her throat gradually became drier in the air.
The words you have to fill in these blanks are: exhausted, suffocating, slowly, scorching, braved, and rolled.
Pause the video and do the task now.
Let's take a look at the answers together now.
Lila slowly pulled herself back up and continued to climb higher.
Sweat rolled down her exhausted body as she braved the scorching heat.
Her throat gradually became drier in the suffocating air.
Well done for selecting the appropriate ambitious vocabulary to fill in these blanks.
It's now time for the second part of our lesson, where you will be writing your plan.
When we write a plan, we use notes.
Notes are concise and capture key vocabulary and information.
For the build-up, it is important you include precise and ambitious vocabulary.
The purpose of notes is to help the writer to organise information easily for future use.
We use bullet points when note-taking.
They look like this.
Let's check your understanding.
What will you need to include in your plan? A, full sentences with capital letters and full stops.
B, bullets points for notes.
C, precise and ambitious vocabulary.
D, unnecessary information.
Pause the video and select your answers now.
The answers are B, bullet points for notes and C, precise and ambitious vocabulary.
Well done.
It is now time for you to fill in the plan for the first key moment.
Lila continued to climb higher, braving the heat.
You have a box for ambitious adjectives and a box for precise verbs and adverbs.
Pause the video and do the task now.
Let's take a look at some good examples for ambitious vocabulary for the first key moment.
Lila continued to climb higher, braving the heat.
For ambitious adjectives, we could have neverending climb, exhausted body, scorching heat.
For precise verbs and adverbs, slowly pulled, braved the conditions, and trudged along.
I loved reading all of the fantastic vocabulary you generated for this key moment.
It's now time for you to fill in the plan for the second key moment.
Lila kept sliding backwards.
She didn't know if she could survive the pain.
Pause the video now and generate ambitious adjectives and precise verbs and adverbs.
Welcome back.
Let's take a look at some good examples.
For ambitious adjectives, I saw: suffocating air, torturous pain, bleeding knees.
And for precise verbs and adverbs: barely breathe, couldn't survive, clung on for life.
Well done for completing the plan for the second key moment.
It's time for your last task.
Fill in the plan for the third key moment.
A rock rolled towards Lila but missed her.
The entrance to the grotto was revealed.
Develop ambitious adjectives and precise verbs and adverbs.
Pause the video and do the task now.
Let's take a look at some ambitious vocabulary for the third key moment.
For adjectives: gigantic rock, immense fear, which means a great amount of fear, utter relief, which means complete relief.
For precise verbs and adverbs: suddenly froze, this is a good example of show and tell, thought the worst, and surged forwards.
Well done for completing your plan for part two of the build-up of "The Firework-Maker's Daughter." We've now come to the end of our lesson, so let's go over a summary together.
The purpose of a build-up is to move the main character's journey forward and build tension.
Precise, and ambitious vocabulary create vivid images for the reader for each key moment of the build-up.
An effective plan has vocabulary organised concisely and neatly.
Careful verb and adverb selection can convey characters' feelings through show and tell.
The emotions of the character change through the key moments of the build-up.
Well done for your hard work preparing to write part two of the build-up.
I have really enjoyed teaching you.
