Hi everyone.

My name is Ms. Voyle, and welcome to today's lesson where you are going to be planning a section of a narrative based on "The Borrowers.

For this lesson, you need a copy of the 2014 Puffin Books edition of "The Borrowers" by Mary Norton.

Pause the video and get your copy of the book now.

Great.

Now I know you have your copy of the book with you.

During this lesson, you'll need to be listening and looking carefully.

There'll be tasks where you need somebody to talk to and you will also need a piece of paper and pen or pencil for writing your plan.

I hope you are feeling excited and ready to learn.

Let's get started.

The learning outcome for today's lesson is; I can plan a section of the build-up of "The Borrowers".

Here are the key words for today's lesson.

Let's practise saying them.

My turn, your turn.

Buildup.

Suspense.

Atmosphere.

Show and tell.

Great job, well done.

Let's take a look at their definitions.

The build-up is the building of action and suspense that leads up to the climax in a narrative.

Suspense is when you are feeling anxious or excited about what may happen.

Atmosphere refers to the tone or mood created in a text.

And show and tell is a writing technique for showing a character's feelings with description of their actions and expressions.

There are two parts to today's lesson.

In the first part, we will be preparing to plan and in the second part you will be writing the plan.

So let's begin with preparing to plan.

Here are the key events of "The Borrowers" on a story staircase.

Listen carefully.

In the opening, a lady called Mrs. May tells a little girl called Kate about the Borrowers.

The Clock family are then introduced.

In the build-up, Pod gets seen and Homily decides that Arrietty should be allowed to go on an expedition with him to borrow.

On this trip, Arrietty encounters boy in the garden and they develop a friendship.

In the climax, the human beings realise their things are going missing and they think Boy is involved.

Mrs. Driver hires a rat catcher to catch the Borrowers, but Boy helps them to escape.

And in the resolution, the story ends as it began with Mrs. May and Kate sewing their quilt.

You are going to be writing a section of the build-up.

The purpose of the build-up is to build action and suspense, leading up to the climax.

You are going to focus on the following section of the build-up for your writing.

Arrietty blissfully enjoyed the freedom of the outdoors and explored her surroundings.

Arrietty ventured through the fresh, tall grass towards a tree and settled there.

She explored the nature around her.

As Arrietty peacefully lay in the grass with the sun shining down on her, she saw something that allowed her.

Arrietty realised that she was looking at what appeared to be an eye, but much bigger than her own.

She knew it was a human "bean"! Arrietty stayed silent and cautious as she examined the eye.

Nervously, she began to consider how she could escape safely.

Let's check your understanding.

Number the events from the build-up one to five to show their audit in the story.

Listen carefully, I will read them to you.

Arrietty realised she was looking at the eye of a human "bean"! Arrietty ventured through the grass and settled by a tree.

Arrietty felt terrified and considered how she could escape safely.

Arrietty enjoyed the freedom of the outdoors and explored.

As Arrietty lay in the sun, she spotted something that alarmed her.

Pause the video now and number these one to five to show their order.

Let's take a look at the answers together.

One, Arrietty enjoyed the freedom of the outdoors and explored.

Two, Arrietty ventured through the grass and settled by a tree.

Three, as Arrietty lay in the sun, she spotted something that alarmed her.

Four, Arrietty realised she was looking at the eye of a human "bean"! Five, Arrietty felt terrified and considered how she could escape safely.

Well done for demonstrating your understanding of the chronology of events in this section of the build-up.

Your writing will be split into two paragraphs and it'll focus overall on building suspense.

Paragraph one will convey a shift in atmosphere.

Arrietty was enjoying the peaceful nature surrounding her as she lay in the grass.

She suddenly spotted something that alarmed her.

Paragraph two will use show and tell to convey intensifying emotions.

When Arrietty realised it was the eye of a human "bean", she felt threatened and afraid.

We need to generate precise and ambitious vocabulary to describe each moment in detail.

Let's remind ourselves of the different types of vocabulary we need to develop.

Nouns, which are people, places, or things.

Adjectives to describe nouns.

Verbs which are doing being or having words.

Adverbs to describe verbs.

And show and tell language which describes a character's emotions by describing their body language and facial expressions.

Let's generate vocabulary for paragraph one.

Arrietty was peacefully enjoying nature when she suddenly saw something alarming.

The focus in paragraph one is conveying a shift in the atmosphere from peaceful to mysterious and concerning.

So we might begin by saying something like, Arrietty was enjoying the freedom to explore the great outdoors.

This conveys that peaceful atmosphere initially.

Soft, fresh grass, vibrant, colourful flowers.

Glorious sunlight, face glowed.

So we have continued that peaceful atmosphere.

Caught a glimpse of something.

This is a shift to mysterious.

Strange, unknown thing.

This continues to convey a mysterious atmosphere.

Worried feeling in her stomach, heart beating fast.

These are great examples of show and tell, which begin to convey a concerning atmosphere.

Let's check your understanding.

Which language would you use to convey the mysterious and concerning atmosphere? A, strange, unnerving thing leering at her.

B, gazed around at the sights of nature.

C, suddenly spotted something alarming.

D, glorious sunlight, face glowed.

Pause the video and select the correct answers.

The answers are A and C.

Well done.

Strange, unnerving thing leering at her.

Suddenly spotted something alarming.

These are examples of language that convey the mysterious and concerning atmosphere.

Let's generate vocabulary for paragraph two.

Arrietty was terrified when she realised she was looking at the eye of a human "bean".

The focus in paragraph two is conveying the intensifying of Arrietty's emotions as she realises she has seen a human eye.

Let's take a look at some examples.

Froze in silence, looked closer.

This is great.

Round ball, glittered in the sunlight.

This starts to give clues that it is an eye that Arrietty has seen.

Lowering and lifting of eyelashes.

More clues that reveal it's an eye.

The humongous eye of a human "bean".

Pulse raced, struggled to breathe.

This is great show and tell that intensifies Arrietty's emotions.

Fearful thoughts ran through her mind.

Let's check your understanding.

Which show and tell language accurately conveys how Arrietty felt after realising it was the eye of a human "bean".

A, giggled and smiled playfully.

B, Pulse raced struggled to breathe.

C, Froze in silence.

D, rubbed her tummy in delight.

Pause the video and select the correct answers.

The answers are B and C.

Pulse raced, struggle to breathe.

Froze in silence.

These are examples of show and tell language that accurately convey Arrietty's feelings of fear when she realises that she has seen the eye of a human "bean".

It's now time for your first task.

Fill in the blanks for paragraph one.

Listen carefully, I will read it to you.

Arrietty could not believe that she felt as she sat in the fresh grass surrounding the tree.

Captivated, she admired the array of flowers and she examined living creatures around her.

She felt such gratitude for the experience.

Arrietty lay back to in the glorious sunlight and her face glowed with happiness.

Just then, she caught a of something through the blades of grass.

She wasn't entirely sure what it was, but it certainly her.

The vocabulary for you to choose from is closely, vibrant, freedom, bask, alarmed, emerald and glimpse.

Pause the video and fill in the blanks for paragraph one now.

Welcome back.

Let's take a look at the answers together.

Arrietty could not believe the freedom she felt as she sat in the fresh, emerald grass surrounding the tree.

Captivated, she admired the array of vibrant flowers and she closely examined living creatures around her.

She felt such gratitude for the experience.

Arrietty lay back to bask in the glorious sunlight and her face glowed with happiness.

Just then, she caught a glimpse of something through the blades of grass.

She wasn't entirely sure what it was, but it certainly alarmed her.

Well done for demonstrating an understanding of vocabulary that will convey a shift from a peaceful to a mysterious and concerning atmosphere.

It's now time for you to fill in the blanks for paragraph two.

Listen carefully, I will read it to you.

Arrietty and remain completely silent.

What was it she closely examined its curved and surface, which reflected the sunlight.

Then she saw the grate of eyelashes and a blink.

Was it an eye? It certainly looked like an eye, but it was.

Panic through her body as she realised that it must be the eye of a human "bean"! Fearful thoughts, her mind.

What would happen to her? She needed to escape.

The vocabulary for you to choose from is sweeping, surged, colossal, froze, glossy, safely and flooded.

Pause the video and fill in the blanks for paragraph two now.

Welcome back.

Let's take a look at the answers together.

Arrietty froze and remained completely silent.

What was it? She closely examined its curved and glassy surface, which reflected the sunlight.

Then she saw the great sweeping of eyelashes and a blink.

Was it an eye? It certainly looked like an eye, but it was colossal.

Panic surged through her body as she realised that it must be the eye of a human "bean".

Fearful thoughts flooded her mind.

What would happen to her? She needed to escape safely.

Well done for demonstrating an understanding of vocabulary that will convey an intensifying of Arrietty's emotions.

It's now time for the second part of our lesson where you are going to be writing your plan.

When we write a plan, we use notes.

Notes are concise and capture key vocabulary and information.

The purpose of notes is to help the writer to organise information easily for future use.

We use bullet points when note taking.

They look like this.

Let's check your understanding.

What is in a plan? A, full sentences with capital letters and full stops.

B, bullet points for notes.

C, ambitious vocabulary.

D, unnecessary information.

Pause the video and select the correct answers now.

The answers are B and C.

Well done.

When you are writing your plan, you should use bullet points for notes and you must include ambitious vocabulary.

It's now time for you to complete the plan for paragraph one.

This is where you are conveying a shift in atmosphere when Arrietty spots something that alarms her.

You need to develop precise vocabulary and examples of show and tell.

Pause the video and do the task now.

Welcome back.

Well done for completing the plan for paragraph one.

Let's take a look at some good examples together.

For precise vocabulary, freedom to explore.

Vibrant, colourful flowers.

Glorious sunlight shone.

Unusual thing in the grass.

Unsure what it was, alarmed.

Here we can see that shift from a peaceful to a concerning atmosphere.

And for examples of show and tell.

Eyes lit up with wonder.

Freely ran through the grass.

Basked, face glowed.

Here we can see, show and tell that conveys Arrietty's happiness.

Caught a glimpse, gasped.

Worried feeling in stomach.

These examples of show and tell show a shift in Arrietty's emotions.

It's now time for you to complete the plan for paragraph two.

This is where you are conveying intensifying emotions for Arrietty as she realises she has seen an eye of a human.

You need to develop precise vocabulary and show and tell.

Pause the video and do the task now.

Welcome back.

Well done for completing the plan for paragraph two.

Let's take a look at some good examples together.

For precise vocabulary.

Round glassy ball.

A great way to describe the eye before revealing its an eye.

Reflecting the sunlight.

Sweeping of eyelashes.

Colossal human "bean" eye.

Needed to escape safely.

And for show and tell.

Froze in silence.

Closely examined.

Panic surged through her.

Fears flooded her mind.

Heart pounded in chest.

These examples of show and tell convey Arrietty's intensifying emotions as she becomes really scared.

Well done for completing the plan for this section of your narrative.

We've now come to the end of our lesson, so let's go over a summary together.

The purpose of the build-up is to build action and suspense leading up to the climax.

In this section of the build-up, Arrietty explores the outside world and spots the eye of a human "bean".

The atmosphere and Arrietty's emotions shift after she spots the eye.

A range of precise and ambitious vocabulary, including show and tell language is used to describe key moments.

And show and tell, language shows a character's feelings by describing their actions, body language, and facial expressions.

Well done again for your hard work in today's lesson.

You have written a wonderful plan and I hope you are now feeling really excited to write this section of your narrative.
