Welcome to today's lesson.

My name is Mrs. Richards.

And today we are practising and applying our knowledge of the suffix that sounds like -Sion, we've also got our test.

It's going to be a really good lesson.

So let's get started.

Okay.

First, we're going to recap our knowledge of that.

Sion suffix It's different.

As well as the exceptions, then we are going to learn a spelling practise strategy.

And at the end of the session, we have our test in this lesson, you will need an exercise book or paper, pencil, definitely your brain, pause the video and get any resources that you need.

Okay.

Let's recap what we learned last time.

Here's our key vocabulary on the board are the three terms, which you need to understand, noun noun, root, suffix well done for joining in.

You need to pause the video now and give a definition of each of these terms off you go, Okay let's see how you got done.

A noun is a person place or thing.

A root is the most basic version of a word onto which the prefix or suffix is attached.

And a suffix is a group of letters at the end of a word that changes meaning.

And sometimes it's quite well done.

Okay? Here are the full suffixes, which we explored in our last session together, they have four different spellings.

S I O N, S S I O N, C I A N and T I O N On the board.

You have the four descriptions of the rules that indicate which spelling we should use.

Your job is to match the room to each of the spellings of the suffix.

Should we have a go together? S I O N, I wonder if there's a clue in the fact that this spelling starts with an S.

Can you see it? Point now.

Yes.

Well done.

The root word ends in a D or a D E or in S E, have a go at this one.

S S I O N is a clue here.

Look at the double S at the beginning of this suffix, it's going to match with root words, ending point now.

Okay, let's try this one.

C I A N.

Okay.

Look at that.

First letter is a clue and think about the particular type of words that use their suffix point to the answer on the screen.

Now try this one.

T I O N use that first after the suffix is a clue.

I think that the important thing to remember about this spelling, should we look at the answers? OK, S I O N is used with root words, ending D, D E or S E.

S S I O N is used with root words, ending S S or M I T, C I A N is used with root words, ending C or C S.

And it's used for professions or jobs, musician, mathematician, politician, electrician.

They all have this spelling of the C I A N suffix.

And T I O N that's used with root words, ending T or T E.

And remember, that's our best bet.

It's the most common spelling.

So if you're writing and you can't remember your rules, or if you're not sure which rule to apply, then T I O N is your best bet, cause it's the most common spelling.

Okay? We're going to do an activity together.

That's going to help you to apply some of these rules.

I'm going to say a word out loud.

That includes the S I O N suffix.

You need to listen to my words and see if you can hear a word within a word and point to the spelling rule on the board, which would help you to spell, okay.

Are you ready for your first word? Hesitation.

Hesitation.

Can you hear a word within a word? If you could hear the root word, then that will help you choose which suffix to use.

Okay.

Pause now and tell the screen your answer.

Hesitation what could you hear? Hesitate.

Is the root word.

Now have a look at the ending in hesitate, point to the correct spelling of the S I O N suffix let's have a look.

Yes.

T I O N because the root word hesitate ended T E well done, ready for another one comprehension, comprehension, Can you hear a word within a word? Can you work out which spelling of the S I O N suffix you might need pause now and say your answers to the screen.

Let's see comprehension.

I can hear the root comprehend and it ends in a D.

So I know I'm going to need spelling point now, Let's see if you're right.

Yes, because that root word comprehend ends in a D.

Excellent.

Next one is an electrician, electrician.

Can you hear the root word? Can you point to the correct spelling? Pause and have a go.

Electrician.

I can definitely hear electric ending in a C so point to the spelling that you think I need.

Yes.

C I A N what was the other clue? that this was a job and a profession? And so I know I've got to use that C I A N spelling.

Well done.

All right.

Ready for another transmission.

Transmission.

Can you hear, words within a word? Could you work out which spelling I need? Lets have a look, within transmission, you might be able to hear transmit, transmit, and it ends in an M I T point to the spelling that you think I need.

Yes.

If the right word ends MIT, I need the spelling.

S S I O N Transmit means to pass something from one person to another.

And transmission is the noun that describes that process.

Here's an example, in a sentence, We are receiving a live transmission from the scene of the accident.

Okay.

Let's have a little look at the exceptions to our rules before we go any further.

So our exceptions normally occur around that first spelling T I O N.

Remember that T I O N can sometimes have an A before it or an I before it, but the important thing is that we can often hear this in our spelling equally when the spelling changes between the root word and the noun.

You can hear this too listen to these.

For example, information have a listen to this one explanation.

Then we have those couple of exceptions that we just had to learn.

There weren't many of them, ocean and fashion.

The other one was cushion, and it spelled in the same way as fashion.

Okay.

Lets have a look at spelling practise strategy.

This one strategy.

That's going to focus on the way in which we can learn the tricky letters.

Within some of these words.

We can do this by listening, really carefully to the word when we say to lounge, but we could also use a strategy like naughty letters naughty letters is when we write the tricky letters in a word, the letters that we often misspell larger than the others, we then draw a picture around the tricky letters to represent the meaning of the word or use colour to make the letter stand out.

So I've had to go with preparation.

There were two letters with that word that I find particularly tricky.

It's the two A's.

So I've made these letters bigger than the others, and I've coloured them in.

I've also underlined the A before the T I O N cause I know that's another clue that's going to help me.

I couldn't think of a picture here to represent the word preparation and what it meant.

So I've used colour instead.

Here's another example, expectation, it's, those three letters in the middle that.

I find the most challenging T A T.

So I've made them larger.

I'm going to colour them in a bright colour to help me remember, why is this a useful strategy? It forces us to interact with the word, the strategy highlights the tricky letters for us, and it consolidates the meaning of the word I want you now to have a go at doing this use naughty letters to explore these words.

The more practise you do, the better practise helps secure things into our long term.

That's what helps us remember these spellings when we're writing, have a go now, okay.

Next, we have our spelling test.

If you feel like you need more practise, then pause the video here and take some time to engage in some more practise with those words, remember little and often, and the more practise, the better.

However, if you feel like , you're ready for your test then we can get started.

Here are some spelling test strategies to help you.

Number one, pause, take a deep breath and take as much time as you need.

Number two, if you're unsure, try writing the word more than once, which spelling looks right.

Number three.

If you're unsure, try writing, spelling more than once and now sound out the different options, which spelling sounds right.

If you're ready to start your test, you need a paper and pencil.

You need to write the numbers one to 10 down the margin or down the side of the page.

Make sure that you can't see your spelling words anywhere pause now and get ready.

When we start our test, I'll say each word twice, and I'll put the word within the context of a sentence.

Take as much time as you need.

OK, some reflection, things to be proud of.

Number one, be proud of how much you practised.

Did you practise every day for 10 minutes? Number two, be proud of the number of practise strategies that you used.

Did you try letter blocking? Did you try naughty letters? Did you try saying the letters out loud to rhythm? Number three, be proud of how you're paying close attention to words in your reading and writing.

I wonder if you've seen any of these spelling words around you this week In the spelt words, look at how many letters you spelled correctly, as well as the letters which are wrong.

They sometimes get children saying I can't spell that word.

And it's often not true.

Normally you can spell the first couple of letters or the last letter or some letters in the middle.

There's no such thing as a good or a bad speller.

We are all improving all the time.

And most important thing is that we learn from our mistakes and we practise.

So remember learning comes from mistakes.

You might not be able to spell this word yet, but keep practising well done! I hope you'll really proud of how brilliant you've done today.
