Hi everybody, it's Ms. Gardner and welcome to today's vocabulary lesson.

Today's a really fun lesson because we are going to be learning lots of new vocabulary that we can use to describe how we are feeling when we are really surprised or shocked by something.

As always, we are going to be learning six new words, which although they are similar in meaning, do still need to be used in different contexts.

So we're going to be looking at them in detail to make sure that we can use them really precisely and purposefully in our writing.

So let's get started with today's lesson.

Your learning outcome for today's lesson is to effectively use the words flabbergasted, astonished, and other rich vocabulary associated with surprise.

So let's start by looking at the keywords.

We'll do my turn, your turn.

Noun, that is a naming word for a person, place, or thing.

Adjective, that's a word that describes a noun.

Synonym, that is a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word and word pair, these are words that often appear together.

So there are three sections of our lesson today.

And the first learning cycle we'll be learning the first new surprise word.

In the second, we'll be learning the second new surprise lesson, surprise word.

And then the third learning cycle we'll be learning four new surprise words.

So let's start with our first new surprise word.

So before I reveal the word, I want you to have a look really closely at this picture.

What can you see that's happening? What is Stax doing? How does Stax seem? How do you think Stax might feel? Pause the video now and discuss this with your partner, your class, or just have a think.

Off you go.

So what can I see? I can see that Stax is looking at a piece of paper that says "jackpot." So he's obviously won the jackpot, won the lottery, and he cannot believe what he's seeing.

He looks like his jaw has dropped, his eyes have widened.

He looks completely in shock.

So what might be the word that is describing Stax in this image? We're going to do my turn, your turn.

Flabbergasted.

Flabbergasted is an adjective and it means to be shocked or amazed, like how you would feel if you won the lottery.

So these are the words that are synonyms for flabbergasted.

Remember, a synonym is a word that has a similar meaning.

It doesn't have to be exactly the same.

We'll do my turn, your turn.

Astonished, shocked, amazed.

Let's have a look at the word in a sentence.

The flabbergasted contestant could not believe their eyes when they saw the winning lottery numbers.

So we can describe Stax as the flabbergasted contestant here because he is completely stunned by what he's just seen and what he's realised, he's just won.

These words are word pairs of flabbergasted.

I'm going to read them out loud first and then we'll pause the video and you can have a go at reading them out loud as well because we know that saying things out loud is a really good way to help us remember them.

Flabbergasted audience, so the audience is seeing something and they're flabbergasted by what they're seeing.

They're shocked.

Flabbergasted reader, someone who's reading something and then shocked by it.

The flabbergasted reader.

Flabbergasted fans.

Maybe the fans could not believe the goal that was scored.

They're shocked, they're flabbergasted.

The flabbergasted onlooker, someone who has seen something and is shocked by it.

They're the flabbergasted onlooker.

A flabbergasted look, you're looking at something and you're shocked.

You'd give a flabbergasted look.

Maybe your jaw would drop, your eyes would widen.

And then a flabbergasted reaction, you can see here in the picture, Stax has given a flabbergasted reaction to winning the lottery.

So now pause the video and off you go, saying aloud these word pairs.

So checking for understanding.

Which of these words is a synonym of flabbergasted? A, astonished, B, reaction or C, look.

Pause the video now.

Synonym of flabbergasted is A, astonished.

Well done.

It's time for task A.

Here is a word mat with the word flabbergasted in the middle You need to read all the words that are around the word flabbergasted.

And first you'll circle the synonyms so words which are a similar meaning, and then you'll draw lines to the word pairs.

A couple of things you can do to help you.

If you want to try and find a word pair, say the word next to flabbergasted.

And if it makes sense, it sounds like they would appear next to each other in a sentence, then they are most likely a word pair.

To find if it's a synonym, you can use the sentence to help you.

The flabbergasted contestant could not believe their eyes when they saw the winning lottery numbers.

If you replace the word flabbergasted with one of the words from the word mat, and then say the sentence again.

If the sentence still makes sense, then most likely it is a synonym.

It won't always work, this trick because sometimes the synonym isn't close enough in meaning.

But this is just a good way to try and work out if it's a synonym or a word pair.

So pause the video now and off you go.

Well done everybody.

Great job.

Let's go through this.

So our word, our synonyms, sorry, are amazed, shocked and astonished.

And our word pairs are flabbergasted audience, flabbergasted fans, flabbergasted reader, flabbergasted onlooker, flabbergasted look and flabbergasted reaction.

Great job.

It's time for the second section of our lesson where we are learning the second new surprise word.

Again, before I tell you what the word is, I want you to pause the video and have a look really closely at the picture.

What can you see happening? What is Mrs. Wordsmith doing? How does she seem? Pause the video now and discuss this with your partner, your class or just have a think by yourself.

Off you go.

Okay, so in this picture, Mrs. Wordsmith is on the ground.

She's looking up inside a spaceship, which already is a pretty incredible thing to be happening.

A spaceship so close to Earth and she can see inside the spaceship and she looks gobsmacked, doesn't she? She can't believe what she's seeing, again, just like in the first picture, her jaw is dropped.

She looks very bemused or maybe a bit scared or shocked about what she can see.

So the word for this picture is astonished.

My turn, your turn, astonished.

That is an adjective which means surprised or amazed.

Like when you've seen something so incredible that you can't believe it.

I think Mrs. Wordsmith in this picture looks astonished by what she's seeing inside the spaceship.

Other forms we can use are as a noun, astonishment.

She gasped in astonishment, she looked in astonishment at the spaceship.

So that's just another way of using the word astonished.

So these words are synonyms of astonished.

We'll do my turn, your turn.

Shocked, amazed, surprised.

Let's have a look at the word in a sentence.

Mrs. Wordsmith was astonished by the unbelievable sight in the spaceship.

She's shocked, she's amazed.

She can't believe what she's seen.

These are word pairs of astonished.

Again, just like last time, I'll read them out loud first and then you can pause the video and have a go yourself.

The astonished glance.

Glance, when you look at something.

Astonished face.

So again, maybe your eyes will widen, your jaw will drop.

That's an astonished face.

Astonished spectator, someone who's seeing something, the spectator was astonished by what he was seeing.

An astonished silence, when everyone's in so much shock, they can't say anything.

They've lost the words to speak.

An astonished look and then astonished audience.

The audience are astonished or shocked by what they've seen.

So now pause the video and off you go saying out loud the word pairs.

Great job.

Let's just check for understanding.

Which of these words is a synonym of astonished? A, confused, B, amazed or C, silence.

Pause the video now.

That's right, it is amazed.

Well done.

So it's time to fill in the word mat for task B.

Just like last time, you'll circle the synonyms and then you'll draw lines to the word pairs.

Again, use the sentence to help you.

Mrs. Wordsmith was astonished by the unbelievable sight in the spaceship.

If you can replace the word astonished with another word and it still makes sense, the sentence, it's most likely a synonym.

Pause the video now and off you go completing the word mat.

Well done.

Let's go through this.

So the synonyms for astonished are shocked, amazed, surprised.

And then the word pairs, astonished audience, astonished glance, astonished look, astonished silence, astonished face and astonished spectator.

Great job.

Now we're going to write a sentence using either the word flabbergasted or astonished.

Make sure you use the word pairs to help you.

So the first thing you'll do is choose which adjective you're going to use.

Then you'll choose a word pair and then you can build your sentence around that.

So for example, you could say "the audience were flabbergasted by the circus tricks." However, I really want you to try and be ambitious here.

Maybe you can make it a complex sentence or you can add in some show, not tell language or a fronted adverbial, whatever you want to do to make this as ambitious sentence as possible.

Pause the video now and off you go.

Great job everybody.

I hope you enjoyed writing your sentence.

Here is a sentence that I've written using the word astonished.

Did I use it correctly? The audience were astonished by the set design.

In this sentence, audience is the word pair because we are describing the audience as astonished.

So yes, I have used it correctly, but I think we can improve it.

The audience, who were astonished by the incredible set design on stage broke into loud applause.

How have I improved the sentence? Well, I've added extra information about the audience by using a relative clause, who were astonished by the incredible set design on stage.

So you can see by adding in my relative clause, I've made this a slightly more ambitious and effective sentence.

So now you need to read back through your sentence you've written and think how effective is your sentence.

Pause the video now and off you go.

Well done everybody.

Great job.

It's time for the final section of our lesson and the final third learning cycle where we are learning four new surprise words.

Have a look at these pictures.

I'm going to talk through each picture and as I'm talking through it, you can think about what do you think each word might be.

So in the first picture on the left, we have a picture of Plato kind of bouncing out of bed.

It looks like there's an alarm shaking or ringing really, really loudly and he looks quite shocked.

In the second picture, Oz is holding up her phone and there's question marks around her.

So she cannot believe what has just happened.

It says "call ended." Maybe someone's just hung up on her unexpectedly and she has no idea what to say now.

In the third picture, you can see Mrs. Wordsmith has become a jack in the box.

And then suddenly surprise, Armie out of nowhere, jumped up at him.

So we're thinking about how we can describe Armie in this picture.

And then in the final picture, it looks like Yin has tagged Yang with a laser gun or a shotgun.

So that Yang has been shocked and looks kind of frozen in fear.

So what do you think these words might be? Pause the video now and have a think.

Okay, let's go through it.

We'll do my turn, your turn.

The first word, the first picture was alarmed.

Alarmed, that means frightened or startled or disturbed.

How you feel when you get woken up suddenly by a loud noise so that alarm clock suddenly woke up Plato and he felt alarmed, frightened.

Then speechless.

Speechless, that means dumbstruck or lost for words.

You don't know what to say, how you feel when someone hangs up on the phone on you.

If you're speechless, you literally do not have any words that you can say because you're in so much shock.

Then startled.

Startled, another adjective which means surprised or frightened.

So quite similar to alarmed, like that feeling you get when someone jumps out at you.

So I wonder if you've ever been walking down the street and your friend jumps out at you out of nowhere, that would make you feel startled.

And then finally stunned.

Stunned, an adjective which means amazed, stupefied, like being so surprised you instantly freeze so you can see in the picture there.

Yang is frozen in shock.

Okay, so checking for understanding.

Can you match the adjective to the correct image? Pause the video now.

Off you go.

So stunned was our final picture there.

You can see Yang being stunned by the laser gun.

Speechless, here, Oz doesn't know what to say when someone just hung up on her so she's speechless.

Alarmed, the alarm bell suddenly woken up Plato, he's shocked, scared, alarmed.

And then startled, Mrs. Wordsmith jumped out at Armie, gave him the fright of his life.

He felt startled.

Well done.

So now let's complete our first word mat for task C.

Because you've completed word mats already in this lesson.

I'm not going to go through them in so much detail.

But this time what's different is that we haven't gone through the synonyms and the word pairs already.

So you'll need to use the picture, the definition, and this sentence.

Armie let out a startled cry as Mrs. Wordsmith jumped out from the box.

Remember the trick of replacing the word startled with another word in the sentence to check if it might be a synonym.

Pause the video now and off you go.

Well done everybody.

Let's go through it.

So synonyms of startled are surprised, alarmed, and frightened.

Our word pairs startled cry.

The noise you make when you're startled, like a scream, startled expression on your face.

Startled voice, startled glance, the look you give if you're in shock.

The startled creature, maybe a creature has been startled or shocked by something else, then a startled laugh.

If you're in shock, you might laugh because you're so nervous.

Sometimes a reaction if you're in shock is to laugh and say "he gave a startled laugh." Okay, it's now time to fill in the word mat for the word speechless.

Again, use the definition and the picture and the sentence to help you.

Oz was speechless for a moment when she realised they had hung up on her.

So pause the video now and circle the synonyms and draw lines to the word pairs.

Off you go.

Okay, well done.

Our synonyms for speechless are dumbstruck, tongue-tied.

Tongue tied doesn't mean you are actually, your tongue is tied together, but it's a word which describes you don't know what to say.

If you don't know what to say, you are tongue-tied and then lost for words.

You have no idea what to say, you're speechless.

Then on our word pairs, speechless amazement, speechless people, speechless moment, speechless horror, speechless rage, anger, speechless gratitude.

If you've received a gift and you're so grateful, you don't know what to say, you're in speechless gratitude.

Well done.

Now we're going to complete the word mat for the word alarmed.

Here's the sentence to help you.

Plato let out an alarmed scream as the shrill noise from his clock woke him up.

Shrill means really loud and sharp.

So using the picture, the definition and the sentence to help you circle the synonyms and draw lines to the word pairs.

Off you go.

Okay, well done.

Our synonyms for alarmed are startled, frightened, disturbed.

You've been disturbed in the middle of the night by the alarm clock.

Then the word pairs are alarmed expression on your face.

An alarmed cry, the noise you make, your alarmed voice, an alarmed glance, alarmed face, and then an alarmed scream.

The noise you make if you're really scared.

Well done.

Now we're going to complete the word mat for the word stunned.

Here's the sentence to help you.

Yin had a stunned expression on her face as she was frozen by Yang.

So pause the video now and off you go.

Well done.

Our synonyms for stunned are dazed.

If you're dazed, you're kind of amazed by something, amazed and stupefied, you're in shock.

Then the word pairs are a stunned expression, a stunned silence.

No one's saying anything 'cause they don't know what to say.

Stunned surprise, they're in shock.

Stunned disbelief, you cannot believe what you are seeing so you are in stunned disbelief.

The stunned crowd and stunned amazement.

They're amazed by what they're seeing.

Maybe the audience have seen an incredible circus show and they were left in stunned amazement.

Well done.

Now it's time for the final task of today's lesson where we are going to fill in the gaps with either the word flabbergasted, astonished, speechless, startled, alarmed, or stunned.

Now these words are quite all similar in meaning.

So some of the sentences might be trickier to fill in.

If you need to, you can always leave the sentence blank and come back to it at the end once you've completed the ones you're sure about when there's less options because another trick to help you is also to look at the determiner before the missing word so a or an.

Remember that a comes before an adjective, which begins with a consonant an becomes before an adjective, which begins with a vowel.

So have that in mind when you're thinking about which one must go in each sentence.

I'm going to read them through now and as I'm reading it, you can be thinking about which word could be filling it in.

Plato gave an hmm cry when the car in front came to a sudden halt.

Armie let out a hmm laugh as Brick told an unexpected joke.

The people in the crowd were left hmm, by the jokes the presenter made.

The fans were hmm by their team's unexpected win.

There was an hmm silence as the talented acrobat performed on stage.

And Bearnice had a hmm expression on her face as the magician revealed the correct card.

So pause the video now and off you go.

Okay, well done everybody.

I hope you enjoyed that.

We're going to go through this now.

And as I said before, they are really close in meaning these words.

So if you have put a word in a different sentence and you still think it makes sense, I'm sure it probably does.

But these are the words that I've used in each sentence.

Plato gave an alarmed cry when the car in front came to a sudden halt and because the word an came before, I knew it was gonna start with a vowel.

A is a vowel, so that's why I chose alarmed.

Armie let out a startled laugh as Brick told an unexpected joke.

The people in the crowd were left speechless, by the jokes the presenter made.

The fans were flabbergasted by their team's unexpected win.

There was an astonished silence as the talented acrobat performed on stage and Bearnice had a stunned expression on her face as the magician revealed the correct card.

Really well done today, everybody.

You've all worked so hard.

Here's a summary of everything we've learned.

Flabbergasted is an adjective which means shocked or amazed, like how you would feel if you won the lottery.

Astonished is an adjective which means surprised or amazed, like when you've seen something so incredible that you can't believe it.

Alarmed is an adjective which means frightened, startled, or disturbed.

How you feel when you get woken up suddenly by a loud noise.

Speechless is an adjective which means dumbstruck or lost for words, how you feel when someone hangs up the phone on you.

Startled is an adjective, which means surprised or frightened, how you feel when someone jumps out at you and stunned is an adjective, which means amazed or stupefied by being so surprised you instantly freeze.

Well done.
