Hello, my name is Mr. Tazzyman.
And today I'm gonna be teaching and learning with you about financial education.
That's all about money, how it makes us feel, and where we might see it and use it.
I hope you enjoy the lesson.
Let's get started.
Here's the outcome for the lesson then.
By the end, we want you to be able to say, "I know money comes to me in different ways, and that in the future I can earn it." There's only one keyword in today's lesson, but I want you to say it back to me anyway.
I'll say my turn, say it, and then I'll say your turn, and you can repeat it back.
Ready? My turn.
Earn.
Your turn.
Well done.
Let's see what we mean by earn.
Earn is to get money for work that you do.
Sometimes you hear the word earn in other contexts as well, but this is the context we are gonna use for today's lesson because it's from financial education.
This is the outline of today's lesson on where could my money come from.
We're gonna start by thinking about how people get money.
Then we're gonna move on to earning money.
In this lesson, you're gonna meet Andeep and Aisha.
Hi, Andeep.
Hi, Aisha.
They're gonna help us by explaining some of their thinking, revealing some tips and tricks, and also giving us some of the answers.
Okay, ready? Let's start the lesson.
"How do you get money?" What do you think? Can you think of any ways in which you might get money? "I think there are lots of ways," says Aisha.
Aisha says, "I get given money during Eid al-Fitr from family.
This is called Eidi, which means gift." Have you ever been given money on a special occasion? For this check for understanding, I want you to share your experiences with somebody else, so have a think and tell the other person.
Pause the video here and have a go.
Welcome back.
Did you think of some different occasions? I hope so.
I wonder if you heard any interesting ones that you'd not thought about.
Okay, let's move on.
"I have won money before now on a treasure map game at the school fair.
People put 50 p into a jar to guess where the treasure was.
I guessed correctly and won the money in the jar." "I get given one pound pocket money each week." "I get one pound a week too.
I sometimes save to buy more expensive things." You can see there that Andeep has got four pounds because he saved for four weeks.
"Ooh, today I found a two pound coin on the playground next to the pond." Can you see it there? "What are you going to do with it?" says, Aisha.
What do you think? Imagine you had found two pounds on the floor somewhere where there were lots of people going.
What would you do with it? What would be the right thing to do? What would be acceptable? Here's the first task today then.
We've got two groups, and you can see that they formed on screen a little corridor for Andeep to walk through.
The two groups have got to think differently.
What might they say to Andeep about the situation in which he found the coin? What advice might they give to him? Jun is part of a group that thinks that they should keep the money.
He thinks Andeep should keep that two pounds that he's found.
Laura is part of a group that thinks it should be given back to the teacher.
So in this task, you are going to do what the characters on screen are doing here.
You are going to get somebody to walk along this corridor whilst you, as one group or another, say your viewpoint on what should be done in this situation.
Remember, you might be asked to give a viewpoint that you don't actually agree with, but that can be quite useful sometimes for you to really understand some of the emotion attached to these different kinds of contexts.
So the overarching question is, what do you think he should do? And by doing this task, you might change your mind, or you might keep the same opinion, but you're going to explore all the different understandings there might be for this kind of situation.
Pause the video here and have a go at that.
I'll be back in a little while to give some feedback.
Welcome back.
So, you were trying to work out whether or not Andeep should keep the two pounds he found or give it to a teacher.
Here's some examples of what the characters might have thought about when they were arranged into opposing groups.
Keep it.
Finders keepers.
It might be someone's bus fare.
Keep it.
It's only two pounds.
They might be buying a present.
Keep it.
You could buy sweets.
How would you feel if you'd lost it? So there were some examples of different opinions.
I wonder what you decided in the end.
It might be worth having a discussion about that with some other people at some point because you often get differing opinions.
Okay, let's move on to the second part of the lesson now.
We are gonna look at owning money.
Andeep asks, "How do adults get their money?" What do you think? How do adults get their money? Well, Aisha replies by saying, "Lots of adults have a job and they earn money for doing it." Remember what earn means? That was our keyword.
Okay, well, let's check your understanding.
What jobs do you know about? Make a list as a class.
Pause the video and list down as many jobs as you can.
I'll be back in a little bit.
Welcome back.
How many did you think of? I bet you've got quite the list.
Andeep asks, "Can children have jobs to earn money?" Hmm.
Have you ever been taught by another child? I'm not sure children could be teachers yet.
What do you think? Hmm.
Well, Aisha says, "We can't have a job, but we could earn some money here and there in different ways." Children can't be employed, but what they can do is find odd jobs perhaps to get some money, but this might not be as easy as it first sounds.
Let's explore that.
"Sometimes my dad gets me to wash the car and gives me two pounds if I finish the job." "Maybe I should wash the car and ask for two pounds then," says Andeep.
"I think you have to agree the job with an adult first." Do you do any odd jobs for payment at home? What are they? As this check for understanding, I want you to think about that and share with other people your experiences.
Pause the video here and do that please.
Welcome back.
Which odd jobs did you come up with? Perhaps you don't have any, but you might have heard some from somebody else.
It might have given you some ideas.
Andeep says, "I like to try and sell old toys, books, and clothes that I don't need anymore.
I get some money back and it's good for the environment too because they are being reused." "That's good idea.
But how do you do it?" "I got help from my mum to do a mini market stall outside my house.
My mum lets other trusted adults know when it was happening." "I'm going to ask my dad to help me sell online." So Aisha's doing something similar to what Andeep has done, but she's going to be doing it online instead.
Really importantly, she's asked her dad to help her to do this.
"Why can't we do that ourselves?" Hmm.
Why do you think they might not be able to do it themselves? What do you think? "Well, there are age limits to keep us safe." says Aisha.
"We are too young." All right, it's time for the second task now.
For this, you are gonna play a game.
Money comes in different ways as shown on the cards below.
So you've got special occasions, winning money, earning money, finding money, selling old toys, selling old toys online.
Without saying anything, so you've gotta keep your mouth zipped up, choose a card at random and act out the way of getting money for somebody else to guess.
Okay.
Pause the video here and have a go at that game.
Welcome back.
How did you get on with the game? Did it go well? Do you think if somebody asks you how you could get money, you could give them a few different ways? All right, it's time to summarise today's learning then.
Money comes to people in a variety of ways.
Lots of adults earn money by working in a job.
Children can earn some money with trusted adult supervision.
I hope you enjoyed that lesson and I hope it's given you lots of ideas about how you can get some money.
But you must always remember that you need to take steps to stay safe when you are doing it, and that you also need to make sure that if you are trying to get money for odd jobs, you agree any payments upfront, because otherwise people can get upset.
My name's Mr. Tazzyman.
I've really enjoyed doing that lesson today.
I hope you did as well.
I hope you enjoyed the games, and maybe I'll see you again soon for another financial education lesson.
Bye for now.
