Hi everyone, my name is Miss Dhillon and today we are starting a new geography unit which will look to build your locational knowledge of Europe.
In the lesson today we will be exploring the question, what are the countries of Europe? This is what the structure of the lesson is going to look like today.
First we're going to start with the key words, then we will go on to look at the seven continents and revise the seven continents.
Then we will be thinking about where is the United Kingdom in relation to the rest of Europe.
And finally, we will finish by looking and studying different parts of Europe.
For this lesson, you will need a piece of paper, a pen and your brain because we're going to be doing lots of new learning and remembering in today's lesson.
So first, let's start with the key words.
Are you ready? Say them out loud after me, continent, Europe, Northern Europe, Western Europe, Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, excellent work team.
So we are looking at four different regions of Europe today.
To start the lesson, I would like you to recap your knowledge of the seven continents.
So, on the screen you can see a world map, and the pink boxes represent the seven continents.
Can you write down all the seven continents? I know you're up for this challenge, so make sure you have your pen or pencil ready and jot down all the seven continents.
Off you go.
Pause the video now to do that.
Here are all the answers.
Did you manage to get all seven correct? High five team.
And if you didn't, that's okay, because you're still learning.
So please make sure you remember which one did not get quite right, and try to remember it for next time.
In the lesson today, we are going to be zooming into the continent of Europe.
Europe is the sixth largest continent in the world.
In Europe, Russia is the largest and most populous, which means it has the highest population of people.
Europe has a total population, as a whole, of 747 million people as of 2020.
So, can you remind me, which country is the largest and has the greatest population in Europe? Say it out loud.
Well done if you said Russia.
And can you remember what Europe is in relation to the other continents in the world? Is it the first second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh largest continent? Say it out loud.
Good, well done if you said it is the sixth largest continent.
I would now like you to pause the video to complete the task on the screen.
Here is the answer.
Did you manage to say A as well? Well done for listening.
You're clearly paying attention, remember the population is an approximate, so it's approximately 747 million people in Europe.
On this world map, can you point to where you think the United Kingdom is? Do that now.
Okay, so, did you point to around here? Well done if you did.
The United Kingdom is an island country that is located off the north western coast of mainland Europe.
Now let's zoom in a little bit further.
You can now see the United Kingdom in relation to the other countries in Europe.
For example, you can also see Spain, France and Germany and where the United Kingdom is in relation to those.
Now we're going to zoom in even further.
You can now see some of the cities in the United Kingdom.
Look more closely at the map on the right hand side.
The cities are represented with the little black circle.
Write down all the cities that you can see in the United Kingdom.
Pause the video now to do that.
Okay team, so you might have been able to notice and see the cities of London or Liverpool or Manchester, Edinburgh.
Well done for studying the map carefully to spot these.
Have a look at this map.
This is a map of United Kingdom, and, it also shows you some of the Seas that surround the United Kingdom.
Can you name the two seas that you can see on the map? Say them out loud.
Good job, you should have said the North Sea and the Celtic sea.
Now a channel is a body of water that joins together two seas.
What is the name of the channel that joins the Celtic sea to the North Sea, but also splits the United Kingdom from the rest of mainland Europe? I'm going to ask you to look at the map more closely to identify the channel.
You can point with your finger onto the map.
Did you say the English Channel? Well done for looking closely at the map and finding the correct answer.
Now I would like you to complete the task on the screen.
Pause the video in order to do this.
Here's the answer.
So the answer was the English Channel, so well done if you remembered that.
Now, before we start the main part of the lesson, I would like you to write down all the countries that you already know, that are in the continent of Europe.
So for example, using a bullet point list I might start with United Kingdom, I know that United Kingdom is part of Europe.
Underneath carry on bullet pointing as many countries as you can remember.
Pause the video now to complete this task.
Okay team, you should have now written your list.
Now, excitingly, we will do this task again, but later on in the lesson.
And it will be really interesting to see how many more you can add to this list.
We are now going to look more closely at Europe.
And in order to do this, we are going to split it into four parts.
And these four parts are Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Europe.
On the screen you can see a compass.
This compass is going to help you remember the different directions.
So, let's remind ourselves what the letters stand for.
N stands for north, good job.
E stands for east, S stands for south, and finally W stands for west, fantastic.
So, if we're looking at the north of the map, we are looking in this direction.
If we're looking at the south, then we're looking in this direction, so the compass will help you navigate your way around the map.
We are now going to look at some of the countries that form part of the Northern Europe.
So, the first one is Iceland.
You can say it after me to practise saying the country's name.
Iceland.
United Kingdom and Ireland.
Norway, Sweden and Finland.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Finally we have Denmark.
Good job team.
We are now going to play a memory game.
You are going to study the map a bit more closely, and then I will change the slide and few of the countries will be missing.
You will have to try and remember which ones these are.
This game is very exciting, so I hope you're ready to play this memory game.
So now I'm going to give you a few seconds to study this map.
If you need a little bit longer, that's okay, just pause the video and restart once you have finished studying the map.
Okay, look at the map.
Which four countries are missing? Pause the video and write these down.
Okay, let's go through the answers.
So you should have said Iceland, Sweden, United Kingdom and Latvia.
Did you remember those correctly? Well done.
We will be playing more of this memory game throughout the lesson.
Now let's have a look at which countries make up Eastern Europe.
You can see all these countries are in the east.
Now you are going to say them after to me.
Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and the final one looks a bit different on the map but we pronounce it as Czech Republic.
So when you're referring to this country, I would like you to save Czech Republic.
So, now team, it is time to play the memory game again.
Remember, you have a few moments to study the map first, try to learn all the countries and then we are going to test you.
So, pause the video now to learn the map on the screen.
Try your best to learn as many as you can.
Okay team, which four countries are missing here? It's getting a little bit harder so I have given you some country flags to help you out.
You can also use the shape of the country or which country is next to, to help you out.
Pause the video to write down names of the four countries.
Okay team, here are the answers.
The missing countries were Russia, Poland, Slovakia and Bulgaria.
Now we're going to have a look at Southern Europe.
There are lots of countries that can be classed as Southern Europe, and they are all located south of the map.
So now, let's say the countries out loud using my turn and your turn.
Are you ready? Portugal, Spain, Andora, Slovenia, Croatia, San Marino, Italy, Vatican City, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania, Greece and Malta.
Excellent job team.
Now it's time to play the memory game.
This time, I would like you to take a little bit longer because there are more countries in this part of Europe.
Pause the video now to recap where they are located on the map.
Okay team, which four countries are missing here? Let me give you some clues.
You have flags next to the missing red boxes to help you, but also, the country with the blue flag with the cross in it is a country that has lots and lots of islands.
And the country near Slovenia, you can see on the map, plays football, and the flag is on the screen to help you.
So the tricky ones, I've given you a few hints to help you.
Pause the video now to write down the four countries that are missing on the map.
Okay team, here are the answers.
So the answers are Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece.
Well done.
I thought Croatia was a tricky one to find on the map, so well done if you've got that correct.
Now we're going to have a look at Western Europe.
Remember, Spain is classed as Southern Europe as it is much further south than France.
Now, let's say them out loud.
Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Switzerland, Monaco, and the last one is Liechtenstein, which is in between Switzerland and Austria.
It is very, very tiny, So you can just make it out on the map.
Have a look more closely to spot it on the map.
Okay team, it is now time to play the memory game.
So this time you have much less to remember, so take a few moments to learn the map, think about where the countries are, what shape are they, what are they next to and try to learn where these countries are located on a world map.
So pause the video now to do that before we start the memory game.
Okay team, so you should have now studied the map.
And now I would like you to tell me what four countries are missing.
Remember to use the flags to help you.
And this time, you can also use the capital cities.
For example, if you look at the red, white and red flag, I can see that the capital city, which is the black circle, is Vienna.
So that might give you a hint about the country.
Pause the video now and write down the four missing countries.
Okay team, let's now go through the answers.
So you should have said France, Belgium, Germany and Austria.
High five if you got those correct.
Team, I just want to say really well done for all your efforts in the memory game.
I know you've tried really hard to remember all those missing countries.
Of course it's a little bit tricky if we're learning it for the first time.
So remember, the more you practise this, the better you will become at recognising all the countries in Europe.
We are now going to do an activity.
Remember I said to you that we're going to do the same activity at the end of the lesson.
So, I would like you to now, on a new piece of paper or a new page, write down all the countries in Europe that you can think of.
And I am sure, 100% sure, that you're going to beat your original score.
So, if you want to, you can organise your answers, so you can think of Northern Europe first.
So you might think, hmm, Norway, Sweden, and you might think of it that way, and then move to Western Europe, then Eastern and then Southern, that's if you want to.
Or you can just do them as and when you remember the countries.
So it's up to you how you organise this.
Pause the video now to complete this task and best of luck naming all the countries that you can think of in Europe.
Okay team.
Now, because there are a lot of countries to name, I am going to go through the answers based on each subregion.
So the first few answers on the screen are related to Northern Europe.
So, you need to pause the video so you can slowly check your answers, and then I will move on to the next page.
Here you have the answers for Eastern Europe.
Here are the answers for Southern Europe.
And finally, here are the answers for Western Europe.
Remember team, you can always challenge yourself to learn more names of the countries in Europe.
I wonder how many more you will learn till the next time I see you.
It is now the end of the lesson.
I hope you had lots of fun learning all about the countries in Europe and also had an awesome time playing the memory game with me today.
Next lesson we will be learning more about the physical features of Europe.
Bye everyone.
