Hi everyone, my name is Miss Dhillon and in today's lesson, to finish our unit, we are going to write an essay on the topic of migration.

This is what the structure of the lesson is going to look like.

First we're going to think about, what is an essay? Then, we will go through the introduction and you will watch me model.

Then we will look at paragraph one and you will watch me model again.

Then we will plan paragraph two and you will write it.

Then you will plan paragraph three and write it.

And finally, we will finish the essay with a conclusion.

So it's really important that you are ready for today's lesson.

You need a piece of paper or a book to write your essay in, a pen or a pencil, and you will definitely need your brain switched on to do a lot of thinking and writing in today's lesson.

So first let's think about, what is an essay? An essay is a longer extended piece of writing on a particular subject.

And the subject that we will be writing our essay on, is migration.

So there are going to be three parts to the essay.

First, you will have an introduction which introduces the topic of migration.

Then you will have a main body which will be one paragraph for each main idea.

And finally we will write a conclusion to summarise the main ideas, but also to make sure we answer the question.

On the screen, you can see the title for our essay.

Please make sure you write this title at the top of your page or your book, so that you are ready to write your essay.

OK team, so now let's have a look at the introduction and what you need to include in your introduction.

So, the key questions on the right hand side of this table will help you write your paragraph.

So, let's have a look at the questions.

The first one is, what is the purpose of the essay? So, why are we writing this essay? The second question is, what type of migration will the essay focus on? We know that there's lots of different types of migration, so we need to be really clear in our essay which ones we are focusing on.

Then, what does migration mean? And, who is a migrant? So it's really important at the beginning of an essay, to define some of the key terms that you will be using throughout your essay.

So let's have a look the key points that we are going to include in the introduction.

So in the introduction, you will need to say that you're writing to what extent you agree with the statement, all migrants are forced to leave their home.

So you are telling the reader that that is the statement that we are writing about and we're saying how much we either agree or disagree with this statement.

Then you will need to tell the reader what type of migration the essay is focusing on.

So because the question is talking about forced migration, so all migrants are forced to leave their home, we're going to be talking about forced migration.

And, what is the opposite of forced migration? Can you remind me? Good job, it's voluntary migration.

So, in your introduction you will say, I am going to focus on forced migration and voluntary migration.

It's important to define the key terms before moving on to the main part of the essay.

So you will need to define that migration is the movement of people from one place to another place, and a migrant is a person who moves from one place to another place.

I am now going to model how to write the introduction under the visualizer.

OK team, it is now your turn to write your introduction using the planning grid on the screen to help you write it.

So you will need to pause the video in order to write your introduction, but remember, you can always go back to the planning grid and use that to help you write it.

OK team, we are now going to be writing our first paragraph, which is on forced migration.

On the left hand side you can see some pictures, that I've taken from our previous lessons, to help remind you what forced migration is.

I would now like you to take a moment to think about the questions, and what the answers to these questions might be.

Let's go through the questions together.

What is forced migration? What is a refugee? What does seeking asylum mean? Why did people flee Syria to move to the UK? What forced them to leave their country? So pause the video now, have a think what are the key points for this paragraph.

OK team, so let's go through some of the key points.

So forced migration is when a migrant has no choice in leaving the source country.

A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee their home because of war, persecution or a natural disaster.

These people are seeking asylum, which means they are looking for protection, in the host country.

So one example, which you are going to include in this paragraph, is the forced migration of Syrian refugees from Syria to the United Kingdom.

And the reasons why they were forced to leave their home is because there was a civil war.

So it was too dangerous and unsafe for them to remain in Syria.

I am now going to model writing the first paragraph under the visualizer.

OK team, it is now your turn to write your first paragraph on forced migration.

Remember, you can go back to the previous slide to see the table and use this to write your essay.

So now I would like you to pause the video and restart it once you have finished writing your first paragraph.

OK team, now let's have a look at paragraph two.

We are now going to carry on talking about forced migration except in this paragraph, we are going to focus a little bit more on climate refugees, which is another form of forced migration, but it relates to the climate rather than a civil war.

So I would now like you to think about these questions.

What are climate refugees? What is the cause of climate refugees? What examples can you share of climate refugees? So pause the video now to think about some of the key points for paragraph two.

OK team let's now go through some of the key points.

So, this is another example of forced migration except someone has been forced to leave their source country to move to a host country because of the climate.

So climate refugees are forced to flee their homes because of sudden or gradual changes in the climate around them.

And the causes of this could be two.

Either, it's rising sea levels, or it can be droughts, which is what we studied in our lesson.

So one example is rising sea levels in Bangladesh.

As the Earth heats up, ice melts and sea levels rise.

Flooding therefore occurs, and people have to flee their homes.

So experts have predicted that there may be up to 20 million climate refugees fleeing from Bangladesh, due to the loss of land, by 2050.

So if you prefer in this paragraph instead of writing about rising sea levels in Bangladesh, you can write an example on droughts, which is near the edge of the Sahara Desert, which we studied in lesson.

So it's up to you which one you want to do but I planned for rising sea levels so you can use my plan or you can talk about drought if you feel more comfortable.

So this time, I'm not going to model how you would write this second paragraph because I've already modelled paragraph one for you.

You now know how to be structuring your essays, so now I would like you to pause the video to complete your second paragraph on climate refugees.

And remember, to use this planning grid to help you write your paragraph.

Pause the video now and restart when you have written that paragraph.

Now we're going to look at our third paragraph and we are going to be talking about voluntary migration, as migration is not always forced because sometimes people do have a choice because of better employment opportunities, better transport links, and more hospitals, better education, there's lots of reasons why people choose to migrate.

And we are going to discuss these reasons in this paragraph.

Let's have a look at the key questions.

I would like you to think about these.

What is voluntary migration? What are some of the push and pull factors? What is economic migration? Why did a lot of Polish people come to the UK after Poland joined the European Union in 2004? Take a few moments to think about these questions and what will be our key points for this paragraph.

OK team so, let's discuss the key points together.

So the first question, what is voluntary migration? Voluntary migration is when a migrant makes a choice to leave their source country.

Push factors push a migrant to leave the source country for example, not having enough schools and hospitals, not having enough job opportunities, not enough paid, well paid jobs, or just generally low quality of life.

Pull factors attract a migrant to the host country.

So more job opportunities, better pay, more hospitals and schools and better quality of life.

Economic migration is when a person moves from one place to another place for economic reasons.

For example, employment.

In 2004, Poland joined the European Union, or the EU, and as a result lots of Polish migrants decided and made a choice to move to the United Kingdom in search for jobs and better pay.

So a lot of them did jobs like fruit picking, some worked in hospitals and schools, et cetera.

So, there's a range of factors that caused them to leave their country, but it was mainly for economic reasons.

So now, what I would like you to do, is reread through the information so that you can digest it before writing your essay.

OK team, so you are now going to write your paragraph which is on voluntary migration.

And this time, again, you can go back and use the table to help you write your essay.

But once you're done, we are then going to write the final part of our essay which is the conclusion.

So you are now writing your final main body paragraph and then we will write our conclusion.

So once you've finished your paragraph on voluntary migration, restart the video and then we will continue.

OK team, in the conclusion you will need to restate your main idea which is that there are two types of migration, forced migration and voluntary migration.

So, the statement here says All migrants are forced to leave their home.

We know that this is sometimes true.

So in the case of war, for example in Syria.

Or because of climate, for example in Bangladesh.

However a lot of people do make choices and they decide that they want to move because of better opportunities.

And we see this in the case of the Polish migrants.

So now you need to make your conclusion, make sure your conclusion directly links back to the essay title.

So in the next sentences, you need to say why you agree with the statement because some people are forced out of their country due to war, for example, refugees.

But you will also say that you disagree because some people are voluntary migrants and they choose to move.

For example, for economic reasons.

Therefore, you are saying to what extent you agree, but then also to some extent you disagree with this statement.

Here are some sentence stems that are going to help you write your essay.

In conclusion, there are two types of migration and these are.

I agree with the statement all migrants are forced to leave their home to some extent because.

So you would give the examples why you agree.

However, this is not always true because some migrants.

And then you would talk about voluntary migration.

So these sentence stems I would use in order to write your conclusion.

So it's not a long paragraph, it's very short just to summarise, but also to make sure you answer the question.

So I would now like you to pause the video to write your final paragraph which is your conclusion.

And remember to use these sentence stems to help you.
