Hello, Mrs. Lomas here.

I am a primary school teacher that really, really, really loves geography.

So I'm super excited to be joining you for your geography lesson today.

So let's find out what we're going to be doing today, shall we? So today we are going to be looking at "The UK: Moving in, moving out" as part of our "The UK: Who are we?" unit.

And by the end of today's lesson, you will be able to describe what is meant by migration and begin to explain why different people have settled into the UK.

We have some keywords in today's lesson.

They are abroad, emigration, immigration, and migration.

So let's do my turn, your turn, shall we? Ready? Abroad.

Emigration.

Immigration.

Migration.

Abroad, means going to or being in a foreign country.

Emigration is leaving your country to live in another one.

Immigration means moving into a new country to live there.

And migration means moving from one place to another with the intention of staying there.

So look out for these words in today's lesson and be really, really careful to listen out to which one it is because they do sound quite similar, don't they? So for today's lesson, "The UK: moving in, moving out", we have it split into three parts and they are, How does migration change the UK's population? Why do people migrate? And what benefits does migration bring? So let's start with how does migration change the UK's population? The population of an area is the total number of people who live there.

One way population size can change is due to people being born and people dying.

A country's population can also change because of migration.

People can move into the country, this is called immigration.

Other people can leave the country and live abroad, this is called emigration.

The UK has more people moving into the country from abroad than it has leaving the country.

This means migration is causing the population of the UK to increase.

More people are born in the UK every year than die.

This means that the population of the UK is increasing through these natural changes as well.

People in, increase the population, babies born, immigration, and people out decrease the population such as people die or emigration.

So let's do a quick check, shall we? Which of these is a word that means leaving a country to live somewhere else? Is it A, immigration, B, emigration, or C, premigration? So one more time.

Which of these is a word that means leaving a country to live somewhere else? Is it A immigration, B, emigration, or C, premigration? Pause the video, have a go and come back when you're ready to check the answers.

How did you get on? If you said that it was B, emigration, you'd be correct.

Well done.

People from all over the world can choose to move to the UK and live abroad.

This has been happening for many years.

Do you know anyone who has immigrated to the UK from another country? Pause the video, have a class discussion and come back when you're ready.

How did you get on? This graph shows the main countries people migrated from in 2011 and 2021.

And we can see the countries down the side, India, Romania, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, United States, Hong Kong, Italy, Poland, and Spain.

And the dots show the number of people from that country in the UK in 2021.

And if the lines and the dots are blue, that means there are more arrivals in 2021 than in 2011.

But if they're red, that means fewer arrivals in 2021 than 2011.

Which continent did most migrants come from in 2021? Pause the video, have a look at the graph and come back when you're ready.

How did you get on? Sam says that, "The most migrants came from Asia as India, China, and Pakistan are all in the top five countries where people moved from." We are going to look now at which countries people move to when they immigrate from the UK.

Do you know anyone who has moved from the UK to live in another country? Where did they move to? Pause the video, have a class discussion and come back when you're ready.

This table shows the top countries that people immigrate to from the UK.

Number one is Australia, number two, Spain, three USA, or the United States of America.

Four France, five New Zealand, six Germany, seven Canada, and eight, the United Arab Emirates, which has a very popular city called Dubai in it.

So it's time for task A, which has two parts.

Number one, using the information on the table, locate the continents and countries and label them along with the data on the world map.

And number two, which continent do most people in the UK immigrate to? So number one, using the information on the table, locate the continents and countries and label them along with the data on the world map.

You might want to draw some arrows going out the UK to these countries if you want, or to these continents.

And number two, which continent do most people in the UK immigrate to? Pause the video, have a go, and when you get back, we'll have a look at one that I've had a go at.

How did you get on? So here you can see we've gone to Europe, Asia, Oceania, and North America.

And North America Canada is 66,000 people, and USA is 155,000.

For Asia, the United Arab Emirates is 42,000.

Europe, you have Spain with 216,000 people, France with 142,000 people, and Germany with 83,000 people and Oceania, with Australia you have 387,000 people and New Zealand 111,000 people.

And the most people immigrated from the UK to the continent of Oceania.

Pause the video and add in anything you missed out on yours or make any corrections on yours if you need to.

So we've had a look at how does migration change the UK's population.

Now let's look at why do people migrate.

There are various reasons for people moving house.

These occur at different times during people's lives and might include for work, perhaps a new job.

To attend university or study somewhere else.

To a larger home, to make room for a growing family, or to retire when they are older.

What positive factors do you think lead to people deciding to move abroad to a different country to live? Pause the video, have a class discussion and come back when you're ready.

How did you get on? Alex said, "To move to live near family in a different country." Izzy said, "To live near the sea and for sunnier weather." And Aisha said, "To have an adventure in a completely different place." What negative factors do you think lead to people having to move abroad to a different country to live? Pause the video, have a class discussion and come back when you're ready.

How did you get on? Jacob said that, "People might have to move away to another country after a disaster caused by a flood or volcanic eruption, or to escape from a war or a conflict.

If people are forced to move for negative reasons such as flooding or war, these reasons for moving are called push factors.

If people move for positive reasons such as better weather or a better job, these reasons are called pull factors.

People sometimes move for both reasons, and these are called push-pull factors.

Time for a little check.

Which of the following is a pull factor? A, an earthquake that destroys people's homes.

B, a new job in a different city, or C, a new baby means the house is too small.

So once again, which of the following is a pull factor? A, an earthquake that destroys people's homes.

B, a new job in a different city, or C, a new baby means the house is too small.

Pause the video, collect your answers, and come back when you're ready.

If you said B, a new job in a different city is a pull factor, you'd be correct.

Well done.

The other two are push factors, aren't they? So time for task B.

Complete the paragraph below, using the word bank below.

So your words are abroad, emigrants, and immigrants, and your paragraph is, "Every day people may move to a new home.

Sometimes they are ________ who have moved into the country from ________.

Other people are ________ who move out of the country to live abroad." So once again, you're going to complete the paragraph below using the word bank below.

Your word bank words are abroad, emigrants, and immigrants.

And your paragraph is, "Every day people may move to a new home.

Sometimes they are ________ who have moved into the country from ________.

Other people are ________ who move out of the country to live abroad." Have a go, and when you are ready to check your answers, come back.

How did you get on? Here are the missing words.

So every day people may move to a new home.

Sometimes they are immigrants who have moved into the country from abroad.

Other people are emigrants who move outta the country to live abroad.

Pause the video now and make any corrections that you need to.

So we've looked at how does migration change the UK's population and why do people migrate? Now let's have a look at what benefits does migration bring.

Some of the people migrating from abroad will stay permanently.

Others may come here to work or study for a few years and then return home.

Over the decades that people have migrated to the UK, they have brought benefits to the country, including extra skills and knowledge.

At different times in the past, people have migrated to the UK.

From the 1940s to the 1960s, many people from the Caribbean arrived in the UK to help rebuild the country after the Second World war.

Many of these immigrants travelled on the ship, the "Empire Windrush", which arrived in London in 1948 and they became known as the Windrush generation.

So let's do a quick check, shall we? The Windrush generation is a name given to people who move to the UK from? A, London, B, the Caribbean, or C, Poland.

So one more time.

The Windrush generation is a name given to people who moved to the UK from? A, London, B, the Caribbean, or C, Poland.

Pause the video, have a go and come back when you're ready to check your answers.

How did you get on? If you said that the Windrush generation is a name given to people who moved to the UK from B, the Caribbean, you would be correct.

Well done.

Many immigrants are highly skilled professionals such as doctors.

They help to fill the UK's need for more healthcare for its growing population.

Many migrants or children of migrants have made a name for themselves in British culture, which include fashion, music, writing, food, and the arts.

They include author and musician, Benjamin Zephaniah, TV presenter Sir Lenny Henry, Musician Rita Ora, artist, Anish Kapoor, musician, Dua Lipa, and Dr.

Who actor Ncuti Gatwa.

Think about a city like London.

It needs workers to do all sorts of jobs.

Some of those jobs are not very well paid.

Some of them need very skilled people.

It's possible that there are not enough people to do these jobs or who want to do them.

This is often where migrant workers will be employed.

So let's do a quick check.

True or false? Immigrants arrive in the UK only to do low paid jobs.

Once you've decided if this is true or false, I want you to justify your answer with either A, the Windrush generation helped with building after the second World War, or B, some immigrants do low paid jobs, but some do better paid jobs like being a doctor.

So one more time.

Pause the video, have a go and come back when you're ready to check your answers.

How did you get on? If you said that immigrants arrive in the UK only to do low paid jobs was false because B, Some immigrants do low paid jobs, but some do better paid jobs like being a doctor, you would be correct.

Well done.

So it's time for task C.

Imagine you are the owner of a large hotel in London.

You need some highly skilled staff to manage the hotel and a lot of other staff to clean the rooms and work in the hotel's restaurant.

Why might migration help you? So one more time.

Imagine you are the owner of a large hotel in London.

You need some highly skilled staff to manage the hotel and a lot of other staff to clean the rooms and work in the hotels restaurant.

Why might migration help you, and think about the number of hotels in London, the number of people in the UK, or the number of people that live in London when you are thinking about your answer.

So pause the video, have a go and then come back when you're ready for some feedback.

How did you get on? So I said that London is a city which has a lot of hotels like mine.

This means that there is a lot of demand for workers and there may not be enough local people to do all the jobs.

Migrants help me make sure that the hotel runs successful.

Some migrants also have the skills and experience from working in their home country that my hotel needs for all the different roles.

You might have had lots of other ideas as well.

But if there's anything you missed, now's the time to pause the video and make any corrections that you need to.

So in summary, for our "The UK: moving in, moving out" lesson, the UK has people moving in and out all the time.

Some people migrating from abroad will stay permanently.

Immigration is the arrival of people and emigration is when people leave to move abroad.

People who move are those with the greatest mobility.

They bring their skills to the country they move into.

Well dones to everybody.

You listened really hard and you did some really good discussions as well.

I wonder, do any of you think you might want to live abroad one day, even if just for a short while? I hope you've enjoyed today's lesson and I will see you again soon in another lesson, bye.
