It is great to have you joining me today for our first lesson on describing school in the present and in the past.
This is our plan for today.
Now, before we make a start, I hope that you're in a quiet place where you're not going to get disturbed.
I hope you've got a piece of paper, a pen, and maybe some highlighters as well.
Throughout today's lesson, you will hear me using certain instructions in German.
These you can see on the screen right now.
What I would like you to do, is that you read through them and familiarise yourself with them.
Now before we make a start on learning new vocabulary, it is really important that we place a focus on phonics.
Sometimes the smallest mispronunciations, they can change and alter the meaning of a word.
So therefore it is really important to reinforce certain sounds and letters in the foreign language.
In today's lesson, we are going to focus on two specific sounds.
The first sound we're going to look at is the "W" sound.
For example, as in the word "Welt", so the W sounds like V.
Now it's over to you.
So as you will have noticed, the W sound is very similar to a V sound in English.
So V.
The next sound we're going to look at, is the A sound, "a" For example, So the "A" sound is "a".
Now it's time to learn the key vocabulary for today's lesson.
What I would like you to do, is that you listen very carefully to the pronunciation of the words.
And try to remember as many of these words as possible.
Now it's just time to practise the new vocabulary, in order to keep it in our longterm memory.
On the screen, you can see nine of the key words of today's lesson.
I am going to say in English word.
What I would like you to do, is that you point at the correct German word and that you say aloud, the German word.
Grammar school, Playground.
Office.
Comprehensive school Primary school On the screen, you can now see the German and the English.
What I would like you to do, is that you pause the video and that you write down the German alongside the English translation.
Stop this video, Now it's the time to practise the vocabulary and see if we can apply our knowledge of this vocabulary in a reading activity.
Shortly on the screen, you will see the speech bubble.
There will also be a question in English related to the text in the speech bubble.
What I would like you to do, is that you read through the text and answer the question in English.
I will shortly start that five second timer.
How many lessons per day were there in primary school? Five lessons.
When and where did the speaker get a "Schultute"? First day at school at primary school.
That's where we find the evidence in the text.
If you completed the challenge, the question was, what is a "Schultute"? And on the screen, you can see one of the images, that it's little cone that students get on the very first day of the school, when they go to primary school.
It is filled with lots of goodies, sweets, stationary, and other things that you would need when you in school.
What did the speaker have in primary school? A longer lunch break Which school had a larger library? The grammar school.
It was smaller than the library at the grammar school.
What did the speaker find excellent about the primary school? There was a large variety of extracurricular activities Maybe it was a founder synonym for the adjective "ausgezeichnet" If you completed the challenge, it could be Now on the screen, you can see all of the different text from the speech bubbles again.
What I would like you to do, is that you reread those texts again, and that you find the verbs in the past tense in these sentences.
Let's have a look at the answers.
On the screen, I've highlighted the verbs in the past tense.
We've got "gab" in the first two sentences.
in the third, in the fourth week and in the fifth, we've got again.
Could you tell me what means? In the first sentence for example, In primary school, there were five lessons a day.
So there was, or there were.
I had was And this leads us to today's grammar points.
We're going to look at using the imperfect tense.
In particular, we're going to look at On the screen you can see three sentences The office of the comprehensive school was big.
My primary school had a longer lunch break than the grammar school.
There was a big variety of extra-curricular activities.
So I've highlighted those verbs that are in the imperfect tense.
The following verbs are irregular verbs, and they do not follow a pattern.
So you really have to learn them.
So on the screen, you can see means to be, but in order to say I was it's is you were.
is he, she, it was.
means to have.
So in order to say I had, it's You had is And is he, she, it had.
In order to say there, was or were, you need to say So what I would like you to do now, is that you pause the video and you make a note.
You might have noticed that the the verb endings, they're the same.
So it's but it's also Now we want to practise this.
What you can see, is on the screen you can see five phrases, but I've left a gap.
Your task is to fill in the correct verbs either it's Remember to use the key vocabulary to identify the missing verb There was a big hall I had lots of lessons It was really great.
I had lots of fun in primary school There were lots of extra-curricular activities.
What we're now going to do, is we're going to combine our knowledge of the vocabulary and also of the grammar.
And we're going to do this in a speaking activity.
We want to make sure that we can differentiate between the past and the present.
So in this activity, there will be some sentences that will be in the past, but also some sentences that will be in the present tense.
Remember, in this lesson, we're looking at describing the school in the past, as well as in the present.
We are going to complete a rock climbing translation.
So what does this look like? On the screen, you can see a sentence in English.
Your task will be to translate the sentence into German, using the appropriate words from the boxes.
You need to start at the very bottom, and then you need to work your way up.
There were five lessons.
In primary school, there was a hall I had really nice teachers Can you tell me why we need to add an E to It's a plural noun.
So teachers is plural.
So therefore the adjective needs to agree because we've placed it in front of the noun.
And therefore it is He is at the comprehensive school in year six.
Remember to add the to So Cause he's in year six, There were lots of extracurricular activities at my grammar school.
Remember would just be at the grammar school.
So therefore we needed to use This leads us to our final writing activity.
In this activity, we are going to combine the knowledge of everything we've done in today's lesson.
What we're going to do is, we're going to do a translation.
But this translation is tangled.
So let's have a look.
On the screen, you can see sentences in German, as well as in English.
What you will need to do, is you need to translate the English parts into German and the German parts into English.
And therefore you need to fill in the appropriate gaps with the appropriate words.
Don't forget, you can rewind the video, if you're struggling with any of the vocabulary or you need extra support with the grammar explanation.
What I would like you to do now, is that you pause the video and that you translate into German, as well as into English, It is time to compare the answers.
You might find it useful to grab a different coloured pen so that you can correct, as we go through the answers.
In English, that will be when I was six years old, I had my first day at school.
The comprehensive school is in Cologne, but my primary school was in Bonn.
In primary school, there was no library, but at my grammar school, there is a library.
I am in year 10, at the Kreuzgasse comprehensive school, but my brother was not a student at this school.
The primary school had a bigger playground, however, the grammar school has a bigger hall.
Then have a look at the answers, compare your answers with the ones on the screen and correct where necessary.
This leads us to our final activity, into our feedback.
On the screen, you can see four different coloured boxes.
What I would like you to do, is that you look at each of the boxes and try to complete as many of these tasks as possible.
Let's compare our answers.
What word are we looking for here? Of course, we're looking for the word What's the German for it had? Put the sentence into the imperfect tense There was a big library in the grammar school.
This brings us to the end of today's session.
Now don't forget you can always rewind the video, if you want to recap some of the key vocabulary or the grammar from today's lesson.
Now don't forget to complete the exit quiz.
And I do hope that you're going to join me for one of my next lessons very soon again.
