Hello, my name is Mrs. Chaudhary.
What's your name? Well, it's lovely to have you here today because we are going to be doing lots of amazing learning today.
Some of the things we're going to be learning are going to be brand new, but don't worry, I'll be here to help you.
So let's get started.
In our lesson today, we are going to be learning about a very important time in Elizabeth's life.
In our previous lessons, in our past lessons, we learned about what Elizabeth was like as a baby and what she was like as a child, what her character was like.
But now we're going to focus on a very important event and time in her life.
What do you think happened in 1936 that was so important? Why was 1936 such an important year for Elizabeth? Hmm, let's find out together why 1936 was such an important year for Elizabeth II.
As always, we have some keywords that we are going to be learning throughout our lesson today.
In this lesson, we have two keywords.
Let's do some My Turn and Your Turn to get to know these words a little better.
So our first keyword is heir.
My turn.
Heir.
Your turn.
Brilliant.
Now our second word is abdicate.
Can you have a go? Your turn.
Fantastic.
So our two keywords today are heir and abdicate, and we are going to find out the meaning of these words throughout our lesson.
So our lesson is split into two parts.
In our first part, we are going to find out about Elizabeth's uncle, the king.
So we are going to find out who this man, Elizabeth's uncle, the King of England, was.
In the second part, which we're going to learn about later on, we are going to find out about the abdication.
And if you remember, abdication, abdicate is one of our keywords today.
So let's get started with our first part of the lesson.
So we're going to find out all about Elizabeth's uncle, the King of England.
Do you remember we looked at this timeline in our last lessons? We've become quite familiar with this timeline.
We know this timeline quite well, don't we? So as always, we learned how Elizabeth was born in 1926, and then she became Queen of England in 1952.
And later on, Elizabeth died in 2022.
Now our lesson today will focus on one part, which was after she was born and before she became queen.
This part happened when she was still a child and we were learning about her being a child, weren't we, in our previous lesson? This part, the abdication, happened at this point in Elizabeth's life.
So in 1936, Elizabeth was 10 years old.
And there's a picture of Elizabeth when she was 10 years old.
She had an uncle and his name was Edward VIII.
And in this picture here we can see Elizabeth with her uncle Edward VIII.
Edward VIII was now the King of the United Kingdom.
He was the King of the United Kingdom, he was the King of England.
So he was a ruler.
One of our keywords today was heir.
So let's find out what that means.
An heir is someone who will be the next king or queen.
They take over the throne after the king or queen die.
So they are the next king or queen.
When Elizabeth's grandfather, King George V died, Edward the VIII was heir to the throne.
And if you remember, Elizabeth's grandparents looked after her when her parents went to Australia.
But when her grandfather died, Edward VIII, his son, was heir to the throne.
A royal heir is a relative, usually the eldest son or daughter of the king or queen, and they are a part of the royal family.
So to be an heir to the throne, you have to be a part of the royal family.
And Edward VIII was son of King George V.
This picture shows Edward VIII after he became king.
What he's wearing and all those medals on his jacket! He looks like a very important person the way he's standing.
And I bet those medals mean something.
They tell us something about what he's done or who he is.
What do you think these medals tell us? Who do people usually give medals to? Hmm.
So let's do a check for understanding to see what we've learned so far.
Finish off this sentence.
A royal heir is usually A: a member of the royal family.
B: a family friend.
Or C: someone who works for the royal family.
Who do you think a royal heir usually is? Pause the video, have a think, and I'll be waiting right here for you.
A royal heir is usually A: a member of the royal family.
So they have to be a part of the royal family, and they're usually the eldest daughter or son of the king.
Because Edward was king, if he were to have any children, then the oldest child would become king or queen.
So they would be an heir to the throne just like he was.
They would become the next king or queen when he died.
So let's do a check for understanding to see what we've learned so far.
Have a go at answering this question and telling me whether it's true or false.
Elizabeth's uncle was the king.
Is that true or is that false? Pause the video and have a think.
Elizabeth's uncle was the king.
That statement is true.
It's right, it's true.
Elizabeth's uncle was the king.
Now have a go at finding out which one of these is true or false.
So which one is true? A: His children, the king's children, would be the heirs to the throne.
Or B: If he, the king, were to have children, then Elizabeth would be queen.
Hmm, what do you think? A: His children would be heirs? Or B: Elizabeth would be queen if he died? Pause the video and have a think.
I'll be waiting right here for you.
A is correct.
If Elizabeth's uncle, the king, were to die, then his children would be the heirs to the throne.
Now we've learned quite a bit about Elizabeth's uncle, the King of England.
So let's do an activity.
Let's do a task to see what we've learned so far.
What I'd like you to do is fill in the gaps in these sentences.
How about you use these words at the bottom to help you? Let me help you by reading out the sentences.
"When Elizabeth's grandparents died.
became the king of England.
This was because he was the royal.
to the throne.
As the king now, if he died and he had children, they would become the next.
of England." Pause the video and fill in the gaps with the words below.
Let's see how we've got on with our task.
Let's go through the first sentence.
When Elizabeth's grandparents died, who became the King of England? Let's find out.
Edward VIII became the King of England.
This was because he was the royal heir to the throne.
He was the royal heir to the throne, which is why he became the King of England.
Let's go onto our final sentence.
As the king now, if he died and he had children, the oldest child would become the next King or Queen of England.
Amazing.
Really great for having a try at that.
Great, so we're halfway through our lesson.
We've learned all about Elizabeth's uncle the king, and now we're going to learn about why 1936 was such a momentous year for Elizabeth.
Learning about Elizabeth's uncle was very important because he's one of the main characters in our story about the abdication and why this was such an important and momentous year for Elizabeth.
So let's find out what an abdication is.
When Edward VIII was king, Elizabeth and her family lived in Windsor Great Park.
Have you ever been to Windsor before? This picture shows us what Great Windsor Park looks like.
They lived in a large country house.
She lived a very quiet life.
So this picture of Great Windsor Park shows the very large country house that Elizabeth lived in.
Does your house look like this or is it similar? Are there some parts of it that might be the same as yours, or is it quite different and your house doesn't look like this at all? It looks very old, doesn't it? And all around the house, you have this wonderful park, and this park is part of her gardens.
Do you have a park as your garden? This illustration shows us what Elizabeth's house looked like when she lived there.
So whilst Elizabeth lived in this lovely house in Great Windsor Park, she lived a very quiet life.
In 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne.
An abdication is when a king or queen gives up the throne.
They declare, they tell everybody, that they no longer want to be a king or queen anymore.
So Edward VIII told everybody in 1936 that he doesn't want to be a king anymore.
I wonder why he made that decision.
Why do you think he didn't want to be a king anymore? Hmm.
Well, Edward did not want to be a king anymore as he wanted to marry a woman who the royal family did not approve of.
So the royal family, all of his relatives, said that they did not want him to marry a woman of his choice.
And that's why he decided that he didn't want to be king anymore.
So we've learned about what this word abdication means.
So let's check for understanding.
Listen very carefully and try to complete the sentence.
An abdication is when A: the king or queen wants to stay on the throne, so they want to carry on being the king or queen.
B: the king or queen wants to give up the throne, so they don't want to be king or queen anymore.
Or C: the king or queen wants to get on the throne, they want to become the king or queen.
Hmm, what is an abdication? Pause the video and have a think.
I'll be waiting right here for you.
So an abdication is when the king or queen wants to give up the throne.
They don't want to be the king or queen anymore.
And that's exactly what Edward VIII did in 1936.
The abdication shocked Elizabeth, her family, and everyone in England.
They were all shocked by this decision that Edward VIII had made.
Look at this illustration.
It shows how people were shocked and upset and rushed to Buckingham Palace to hear the news.
So all of the people are standing outside Buckingham Palace where the king lives, and they're waiting to see what's going to happen next.
This man here is holding the newspaper and he's shouting and telling people to come over and read the paper to get the news about what's happened.
And if you look in the corner over there, you can see the man's face.
What do you think he's saying to the other man? What do you think his face looks like? Does he look very happy or sad or worried? I think he looks a bit worried as he's talking to the man next to him and they're talking about what's going to happen since the king has decided to abdicate the throne, give up the throne.
Lots of people gathered outside to find out what would happen next because this was such a shock and a surprise to everyone.
People were shocked because this had never happened before.
This was very, very new.
It had never happened before.
Elizabeth's father was the king's brother.
Because the king, Edward VIII, had no children, Elizabeth's father was the king's heir.
And what does heir mean? An heir to the throne is somebody who will become the next king or queen.
So when the King of England, Edward VIII, Elizabeth's uncle, gave up his throne, what do you think happened next? What do you think happened next after her uncle abdicated the throne? Hmm.
Well, Elizabeth's father became King George VI of England.
He became the King of England because his brother had no children and had decided to abdicate the throne.
This painting shows the day that King George VI became king.
Look really closely at what he's wearing and what he's holding.
I can see a crown on his head.
Can you spot the crown? And I can see him holding some very important objects that we're gonna learn about very soon.
But you can see he's dressed just like a king in very royal robes, and he looks like a very important person because he is a very important person.
He's now become King of England.
As the new king's oldest child, Elizabeth was now heir to the throne.
This meant that one day, Elizabeth would become queen.
There's a photograph there of Elizabeth on the balcony with her father, the king.
This was the day that he became king.
You can see them all wearing lovely crowns.
And they stand on the balcony because they wave at all of the people that have come to see them.
So, why do you think this was a momentous and very important time in Elizabeth's life? Why do you think after all this has happened, why was this such an important time in her life? It's because she would now one day become the Queen of England.
She was living her very nice quiet life in the country at Great Windsor Park.
But when her uncle abdicated the throne, this meant that one day she would become the queen.
Wow, that's a really big thing to have happen to your life.
So let's check for some understanding.
Is this statement true or false? "The abdication meant that Elizabeth's father was now the king." Is that true? Is that a fact? Is it real? Or is it false? It's not true? Pause the video and have a think.
The abdication meant that Elizabeth's father was now the king is true! That's a fact, it's true.
Because the abdication happened, it meant that Elizabeth's father was now the King of England.
Okay, so let's justify your answer.
Let's move on to the next part.
Because he was now the king, her father, does it mean that A: Elizabeth was an heir and would one day become queen? Or B: This meant that Elizabeth was now the queen? So A, she was now an heir, or B, she was now queen.
Which one do you think is right? Pause the video and have a think.
This meant that Elizabeth was an heir and would one day be queen.
That's right.
So she wasn't queen just yet, but one day she would become queen.
Great! So let's have a task to see what we've learned so far.
I'd like you to read these events very carefully and put them in the right order from first to last.
So what happened first, what happened next, and what happened last? Here are the three events that I'd like you to order.
Elizabeth's father became king.
Edward VIII became king.
Edward VIII abdicated the throne.
Which came first, which came next, and which came last? Pause the video and order the events.
So welcome back.
Let's put the events in the correct order.
So the first thing that happened was Edward VIII became king.
So her uncle became king after her grandfather died.
The next thing that happened was Edward VIII abdicated the throne.
So he decided and told everybody that he didn't want be king anymore.
And the last thing to happen was Elizabeth's father became king.
He became the King of England.
Fantastic! So let's summarise what we've learned today.
In 1936, Elizabeth was only 10 years old.
She lived a quiet life at Windsor Great Park in a country house.
We looked at an illustration of the house, didn't we? And we looked at how big the house was and how there was a park all around it.
Her uncle was King Edward VIII.
That year, in 1936, he decided to abdicate the throne.
And do you remember what abdicate means? That's right.
Abdicate is when a king or queen decides that they don't want to be a king or queen anymore.
So that year, Elizabeth's uncle, King Edward VIII, decided that he wanted to abdicate the throne and not become king anymore.
Elizabeth's father was now King George VI, and Elizabeth was heir to the throne.
And that meant that she would one day be the queen.
Therefore, 1936 was a momentous year for Elizabeth as her life changed forever.
It has been wonderful learning with you today about this very important time in Elizabeth's life.
I can't wait to learn more about Elizabeth with you in our next lesson.
I'll see you soon!.
