Hello.
Welcome to another amazing and exciting history lesson.
My name is Mrs. Choudary.
What's your name? Well, it's great to have you here with us as we carry on learning all about an amazing woman called Elizabeth II and what her life was like.
Now, some of the learning today will be brand new, but I'm here to help you.
So let's get started.
Now, this lesson will be all about what happened when Elizabeth's reign came to an end.
We're going to discover what happened when Elizabeth stopped being the Queen of the United Kingdom.
So as usual, we have some key words that we will be discovering in our lesson.
We have four key words today.
The first key word is reign.
My turn, reign.
Your turn.
Fantastic.
Our second keyword is monarch.
My turn, monarch.
Your turn.
Good job.
Our third keyword is state funeral.
My turn, state funeral.
Your turn.
Brilliant.
And the fourth and final keyword is respect.
My turn, respect.
Your turn.
Brilliant.
So those are our four keywords that we will be learning about today.
Our lesson is divided into two parts.
The first part will be all about Elizabeth's death.
So we'll be discovering how she died, how she passed.
The second part is about Elizabeth's funeral, so what happened after she died.
Let's begin by finding out about Elizabeth's death.
This is a timeline that we have been looking at very carefully in all of our lessons.
Let's look at it again.
So we've learnt that Elizabeth was born in 1926.
What happened next? Yes, she was a princess.
She was Princess Elizabeth for some time, wasn't she? Until 1952 when Elizabeth became the Queen of the United Kingdom.
What happened next? Yes, she ruled as Queen Elizabeth for quite some time.
She was a queen for a very long time, and she did lots of things during that time.
But something happened in 2022.
Elizabeth died in 2022.
And we've looked at this timeline quite a bit in all of our lessons.
But in today's lesson we'll be learning about how Elizabeth died in 2022.
We'll be finding out more about that time.
So on September the 8th, 2022, Elizabeth II died peacefully.
She died at her favourite home Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
And if you remember, Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.
This was her favourite home.
You can see this photograph of Balmoral Castle.
And the reason why it was her favourite home is because she loved nature.
She loved dogs and horses, and when she was at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, she was able to reconnect and be around nature.
It was also where Philip asked her to marry her.
He proposed to her at Balmoral Castle.
And every summer Elizabeth would visit the castle with her father and her grandfather.
And when she got married to Philip, she would also visit the castle with her children.
So that's why Balmoral Castle was her favourite home, and that's where she died peacefully.
Elizabeth was 96 years old when she died.
When she died, Elizabeth's reign came to an end.
Her reign came to an end, and that's one of our key words.
What do you think reign means? Hmm.
Well, a reign is the amount of time that someone is a ruler.
A monarch is the king or queen who is the ruler.
So, Elizabeth was the monarch because she was a queen who was the ruler of the United Kingdom.
Elizabeth was the longest reigning monarch the United Kingdom had ever had.
So she ruled for a very, very long time in the United Kingdom, longer than any other king or queen that had ever existed in the United Kingdom.
She reigned for over 70 years.
That's a very long time.
Do you know anyone who is over 70 years old? Hmm.
This photograph shows Elizabeth on an official visit in England, and we can see that she's growing old over the 70 years.
So we've seen her as a princess and as a young girl, we've seen her at her wedding.
We saw her at her coronation, but now we can see that she has grown old towards the end of her reign.
Let's have a check for understanding.
What happened on the 8th of September, 2022? Was it, A, Elizabeth got married, B, Elizabeth died, or C, Elizabeth became queen? Pause the video and have a think.
So on the 8th of September, 2022, Elizabeth died.
She's died very sadly at her favourite home, Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
It's time for our task.
I'd like you to order the events during Elizabeth's life, starting with the earliest.
So we have these very important events that happened during her life.
We've got the time when Elizabeth became a queen, when Elizabeth died, when Elizabeth was born, and when Elizabeth got married.
Which came first, next, and then after that, and what came last? Pause the video and have a go at ordering these events.
Great, how did you get on with that task? Hmm, let's do it together.
Let's try and figure out this timeline together.
So what's the first thing that happened in 1926? Elizabeth was born, that's right.
Elizabeth was born in 1926.
What happened in 1947? What happened next? Elizabeth got married, that's right.
She got married after the Second World War and she married Philip.
This photograph shows them at their wedding.
What happened after she got married, in 1952? Elizabeth became queen.
She became the Queen of the United Kingdom, and this black and white photograph shows her at her coronation.
She's wearing a very special crown on her head to symbolise that she is the queen.
And finally, what happened in 2022? That's right, Elizabeth died in 2022, and this photograph shows her coffin covered in the Royal coat of arms, some flowers, and the important coronation objects.
Great, well done for having a go at that task.
Let's carry on with our learning for today.
Wow, we are halfway through our learning journey.
Let's focus now on Elizabeth's funeral.
Let's find out what happened after she died.
So when Elizabeth died, her coffin lay in state.
This means that her coffin was placed in the Westminster Hall, so the public could visit her.
Westminster Hall is inside the Houses of Parliament.
This photograph shows Elizabeth's coffin lying in state.
You can see it in the middle there.
It's surrounded by guards, and there are lots of people looking at her coffin.
When people visited Elizabeth's coffin, they were able to say goodbye to her and pay their respects.
Hmm, respects, that's one of our keyword.
Do you know what that word means? Hmm, have a think.
You might have heard of it before.
Well, when you pay respect to someone, it is because you look up to and admire them.
So these people have come to pay their respects because they really look up to and admire Queen Elizabeth II, and I think they're feeling very sad that she has died.
People queued for hours to see Elizabeth's coffin.
Have you ever queued for hours for something? Hmm.
This photograph shows the people standing in a very, very long queue to see her coffin.
So you can see it's wrapping all the way around, and there's people going all the way down the pathway, and even further back.
You might have queued up at the shop.
You might have queued up for maybe going to the toilet, or waiting to go somewhere.
But have you ever queued for hours for something? Well, these people really wanted to pay their respects and say goodbye to Elizabeth, that's why they queued for hours and hours.
Let's have a check for understanding.
So true or false, Elizabeth's coffin lay in state? Pause the video and have a think.
Elizabeth's coffin lay state, that is true, it did.
Let's justify our answer.
So which of these is right? Is it, A, nobody came to see Elizabeth's coffin at Buckingham Palace, or B, people queued for hours to pay their respects to Elizabeth? Pause the video and have a think.
It's B, people queued for hours to pay their respects to Elizabeth.
And we saw that photograph of people in the queue where it wrapped all the way around, down the pathway and around the back.
Now, Elizabeth was given a state funeral, so that the whole nation could show their respects.
A state funeral is a special event where someone very important is remembered by the public after they die.
Elizabeth's coffin was also covered with a flag with a Royal coat of arms on it to show respect.
Because remember, she was the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Royal coat of arms representing it was a symbol of the United Kingdom.
So that flag being around her coffin, on top of her coffin showed just how important she was.
You can even see the crown sitting on top of her coffin.
On the 19th of September, 2022, 2000 very important people from all over the world attended Elizabeth state funeral at Westminster Abbey.
Millions of people in the UK and around the world watched the state funeral on television.
Do you remember watching or hearing about the state funeral? You might have heard people talking about it.
Well, this photograph shows crowds of people outside Buckingham Palace waiting to show their respect to the royal family.
Let's have a check for understanding.
What is a state funeral? Is it, A, special event when someone is born, B, a special event when someone gets married, or C, a special event where someone very important is remembered by the public when they die? Pause the video and have a think.
A state funeral is a special event where someone very important is remembered by the public when they die.
And Elizabeth had a state funeral with lots of members of the public coming to pay their respects.
Now, when Elizabeth's reign ended, her heir became king.
Can you remember who Elizabeth's heir was? It was her eldest son, Charles Prince of Wales.
He became King Charles III.
This photograph shows King Charles III at his coronation.
Have you heard of King Charles III before? You might have heard about his coronation.
You might have seen it on the television or heard about it on the radio.
You can see him as the king in this photograph with a crown on his head, and the very important cloak and necklace as well.
And he is waving at members of the public.
Let's have another check for understanding.
So after Elizabeth died, Charles Prince of Wales became, A, King Charles III, B, Queen Charles III, or C, Duke Charles III? Pause the video and have a think.
So after Elizabeth died, Charles Prince of Wales became King Charles III.
He became the king because he was the heir to the throne.
He was the eldest child of Elizabeth II, that's why he became the king.
Let's move on.
Wow, we're at our final task.
So I'd like you to look at this picture of Elizabeth's coffin.
Share what you think is happening and why you think this is happening.
Pause the video and have a go.
So let's take a good look at this photograph together.
We can see Elizabeth's coffin lying in state in Westminster Hall, so people can pay their respects to her.
Let's take a closer look at what is happening and why.
Well, we can see people queuing, and why do you think they're queuing? Because they want to show their respects.
You can also see Elizabeth's coffin in the middle.
That's her coffin there at the centre and surrounded by guards.
You can see the guards protecting the coffin because she is such an important and special person.
There's a cross near her coffin because she was, remember, the head of the Church and she was a Christian, so that cross is very important to her.
There's a flag covering her coffin with the Royal coat of arms, which shows respect, because remember that Royal coat of arm represents the United Kingdom.
And you can see, very closely, you can see people paying their respects.
They're saying their goodbyes to Elizabeth.
So there is lots going on in that photograph.
Wow, and just like that, we have reached the end of our lesson.
We have done a great deal of learning today, all about how Elizabeth II's reign came to a close.
So let's summarise what we learned.
We discovered that on the 8th of September, 2022, Elizabeth II died peacefully at her favourite home, Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
Do you remember why it was her favourite home? Yes, she had lots of fond memories from Balmoral Castle, from her childhood, from being with her horses and her dogs, and from being there with her family during the summers.
She was 96 when she died and had reigned for over 70 years.
She's the longest reigning monarch that the United Kingdom has ever had.
People queued for hours to see her coffin as she lay in state at Westminster Hall at the Houses of Parliament.
We saw photographs of people in a queue, a very long queue, and they were all waiting patiently to come and pay her their respects.
Elizabeth was given a state funeral, so that the whole nation could show its respect, and lots of important people from around the world also came to her funeral.
When she died, Elizabeth's eldest son, Charles the Prince of Wales became King Charles III, and he became the king because he was heir to the throne.
Wow, that's quite a bit of learning we've done today all about how Elizabeth died and all about her very, very special state funeral.
It has been wonderful learning all about Elizabeth's life with you, and it has been great learning how her reign finally came to a close.
Well, I hope you enjoyed finding out all about this fascinating woman that Elizabeth II was.
But it's goodbye for now.
