Hello, welcome back to another history lesson.

My name is Mrs. Chowdry.

What's your name? Well, it's great to have you here today because we are going to carry on learning all about Elizabeth II and what her life was like.

I'm super excited to be learning with you.

So let's get started.

In today's lesson, you'll be able to talk about the early years of Elizabeth and Philips's family.

So in our previous lessons, in our last lessons, we've been learning all about Elizabeth's life, her childhood, and the really important events that happened in her life, like the abdication and the Second World War.

And we recently learned about her marriage to Prince Philip.

Now we're going to learn about her early years in her marriage and all about her children as well.

We are going to be learning about Elizabeth and Philip's family.

What do you think their family life was like? Who do you think was in their family? Let's find out together.

So as always, we have some keywords that we are going to get to know throughout our lesson.

Today we have five keywords.

We have five keywords today.

So let's get to know them a little bit better.

We'll do a bit of my turn and your turn.

So the first one.

The first one, my turn.

Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace.

Your turn.

Great, good try.

That's a long, long one.

The second keyword is career.

My turn, career.

Your turn.

Good job.

The third keyword is Malta.

My turn, Malta.

Your turn.

Great.

The fourth keyword is empire.

My turn, empire.

Your turn.

Superb.

And the last and final, the fifth keyword is Commonwealth.

My turn, Commonwealth.

Your turn.

Beautiful.

So those are our five keywords today that we are going to find out more about later on.

As always, our lesson is split into two parts.

Our lesson is split into two parts.

The first part will be all about Elizabeth's children.

So we are going to find out who her children were and what their names were and what they were like.

Our second part will be about their new home in Malta.

And remember, Malta was one of our keywords, so we'll learn a little bit more about that later.

But let's start by focusing on learning about Elizabeth's children.

As always, we look at this timeline to remind us about Elizabeth's life.

So if you remember, Elizabeth was born in 1926.

She was a princess for quite some time before finally becoming queen in 1952.

She ruled as a queen for a very long time until she died in 2022, which was not too long ago.

It's only a couple of years ago.

Now, in our lesson today as we focus on Elizabeth's children, we are going to be looking at the time in 1948 when her first son was born.

That's when her son, Charles, was born in 1948.

And very soon after, in 1950, Elizabeth's daughter was born.

Her name was Anne.

Her daughter Anne was born in 1950.

So Charles and Anne were born not too long before Elizabeth became queen in 1952.

So this time in Elizabeth's life we're looking at is just before she became queen.

So it was a really important time, just before she became queen.

Now, let's go back a bit before the children were born.

After their marriage, remember we learned all about how Elizabeth and Philip got engaged and married in our last lesson.

But after their marriage, after their wedding, Elizabeth and Philip lived at Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace, that's one of our keywords for today.

Well, Buckingham Palace is the official home of the Royal Family in London.

So that's where the royal family live in London.

There are over 700 rooms in the palace, including 78 bathrooms. So you can imagine Buckingham Palace is huge.

How many bathrooms do you have in your house? I only have one bathroom in my house, but Buckingham Palace has 78 bathrooms. Wow, that's a lot.

This photograph, this black and white photograph shows us what Buckingham Palace looked like after the Second World War ended.

We can see just how big and grand the palace is.

Look at how many windows it has.

There are so many windows.

There's a fence going all the way around and some large gates as well at the front.

And you can see how lots of people gather to come and see the royal family at Buckingham Palace.

At the top of the palace, there's a flag on a flag pole.

Wow, isn't it grand? Only the royal family get to live in Buckingham Palace.

Now, in 1948, Elizabeth and Philip's first child was born.

His name was Charles.

There's a baby photo of Charles.

You see him as a baby.

Charles was born at Buckingham Palace.

So he was born at the palace where the royal family lived.

Have you ever heard of Charles? Hmm, might've heard about him in the news recently.

Well, this is a photograph of Charles when he was a baby.

And like all the other pictures we've seen, all the other photographs, it's also a black and white photograph because it's very old and there weren't colour photographs just yet.

Two years later, after Charles was born, Elizabeth and Philip had another child, a girl called Anne.

Anne was born at Clarence House in London.

This photograph shows baby Anne with her parents, Elizabeth and Philip, and her brother Charles at Clarence House.

Look at them, they're a family.

There's mother, father, and two children.

They're a family.

Look really carefully at this photograph.

Can you spot Anne and Charles in this picture? You can see Elizabeth, she's holding a baby.

And you can see Philip, he's holding someone else as well.

So can you spot Anne and Charles? Let's do this together.

Let's find out together.

There's Anne.

She was born in 1950, remember? So she's younger.

Anne was still a baby.

She's the daughter of Philip and Elizabeth.

And there is Charles.

He's the oldest son of Philip and Elizabeth.

So let's have a check for understanding, because we've done quite a bit of learning so far.

Listen really carefully to this question.

What were Elizabeth's children called? Were they called, A, Charles and Elizabeth, B, Charles and Anne, or C, Anne and Philip? Pause the video and have a think.

So, welcome back.

What were Elizabeth's children called? Let's find out.

They were called Charles and Anne.

So if you remember, they had a boy and his name was Charles.

That was the name of their son.

And they had a daughter, a girl.

Her name was Anne.

Now, after the birth of their children, Philip carried on with his career in the Royal Navy.

You remember, in our last lessons, we learned about how Philip worked in the Royal Navy.

He was there during the Second World War, he worked in the Royal Navy and that's how he helped out during the Second World War.

This photograph shows Philip in his Royal Navy uniform, a very special uniform that you wear to special events.

You can see all the badges and medals that show how important he is in the Royal Navy.

So he had a career in the Royal Navy.

And a career, that's one of our keywords for today.

Well, a career is the job that a person wants to do throughout their life.

So teaching is my career because I'm a teacher.

Philip's career was in the Royal Navy.

But what career would you like to have when you are older? Who would you like to be? What would you like to do? But Philip's career was in the Royal Navy, that's the job he wanted to do throughout his life.

Philip's career meant that he had to travel and go away a lot.

So he was always travelling for his job and he was always away from his family.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth stayed in England and cared for their young children.

So this photograph shows Elizabeth with Charles and Anne.

Philip wasn't there because his career meant that he had to travel a lot.

It's just the three of them.

Elizabeth, Charles, and Anne.

Let's have a check for understanding.

So try and finish off this sentence.

A career is, A, a person's time at school, B, the job that a person wants to do throughout their life, or C, when two people agree to marry each other.

What is a career? Pause the video and have a think.

A career is the job that a person wants to do throughout their life.

That's right.

And Philip's career was in the Royal Navy.

Let's move on.

Let's do a task, an activity, to see what we've learned so far.

I'd like you to read these events very carefully and put them in order from first to last.

So which event happened first, which event happened next, and which event happened last.

So the first one is, Anne is born at Clarence House, Elizabeth and Philip get married, and Charles is born at Buckingham Palace.

Which of these happened first, which happened next, and which happened last? Pause the video and have a go.

Welcome back.

How did you get on with the activity? Well, let's do it together and let's find out which order these things happened.

What happened in 1947 that's the first thing on our timeline.

What happened? Hmm.

Ah, Elizabeth and Philip got married.

They got married in 1947.

You remember in our last lesson we looked at pictures, photographs from their wedding day.

We looked at a very tall wedding cake that they had, and we saw a photograph of them being brought in by horse and carriage.

So what happened next in 1948? Charles was born at Buckingham Palace.

That's right.

He was born at Buckingham Palace.

And finally, in 1950, what happened? Anne was born at Clarence House.

And throughout this time, well, after Elizabeth got married, after Charles was born, after Anne was born, Philip was doing what? Yes, he continued his career in the Royal Navy.

Let's move on.

You did really well with the activity.

Great! We're on to the next part of our lesson.

You did so well learning all about Elizabeth's children.

So now we're ready for our next part.

This part is called a new home in Malta, and Malta was one of our keywords.

Now, in 1949, Elizabeth and her family moved to live in Malta, where Philip was stationed with the Royal Navy.

Because remember, his career meant that he had to travel a lot.

So at some point after 1949, he was stationed at Malta.

Stationed means to be set somewhere, to be told to stay somewhere.

Malta is one of our keywords, and Malta is a small island near Italy.

Have you ever been to Italy, or have you heard of Italy before? It's a country that's not too far away from where we live, but you'd have to take usually a plane to get there.

Let's do a check for understanding.

Where did Elizabeth and her family move to? Did they move to, A, Greece, B, Australia, or C, Malta? Where did Elizabeth and her family move to? Pause the video and have a think.

Elizabeth and her family moved to Malta.

They moved to Malta, which is a small island near Italy, and they moved there because Philip was stationed there as part of his job in the Royal Navy.

Let's move on.

So this country, Malta, used to be a part of the British Empire, and empire is one of our keywords today.

Let's find out what it means.

An empire is a collection of countries ruled by the rulers of another country.

So an empire is a collection of countries ruled by the rulers of another country.

And the British Empire represents countries that are ruled by the royal family in the United Kingdom.

This magazine cover is a very old magazine cover.

It shows the people that lived in countries that were a part of the British Empire.

So if you look really carefully at this illustration on this magazine cover, you can see people that are wearing different clothes and they look a bit different.

They're wearing different hats as well.

And they lived in countries that were part of the British Empire.

So they weren't people who lived in England but other countries.

When Elizabeth and her family moved to Malta in 1949, it was still a part of the British Empire.

Today, Malta is part of the Commonwealth.

That's another one of our keywords, Commonwealth.

Have you ever heard of or been to Malta? This picture shows the island of Malta.

Have you been there or heard of it? I haven't been yet, but I'd love to go one day because I've heard how hot and sunny and beautiful it is.

Commonwealth, that's one of our keywords for today.

Let's find out what it means.

The Commonwealth is a collection of countries that used to be part of the British Empire.

So we've learned that Empire is a group of countries that is ruled by rulers of another country, but the Commonwealth are countries that used to be ruled by rulers of another country, but now they have their own rulers.

This drawing shows people who are a part of the Commonwealth.

You can see they're all from different countries, they all look very different.

Again, they're wearing different hats as well, and they are part of the Commonwealth.

So we've done a fair bit of learning about Malta, the Empire, and the Commonwealth.

So let's have a check for understanding.

Is this statement true or false? Malta is a part of the British Empire.

Pause the video and have a think.

Malta is a part of the British Empire.

That statement is false.

It's false.

That's not true.

Okay, so let's justify our answer.

Let's move on to the second part of our check for understanding.

Which of these is right then? Is it, A, Malta used to be a part of the British Empire but is now part of the Commonwealth, or is it B, Malta was only ever part of the Commonwealth.

Pause the video and have a think.

Malta used to be a part of the British Empire, but is now part of the Commonwealth.

That's the right answer.

Let's move on with our learning.

Malta was a hot and quiet country.

Elizabeth was able to live a normal life.

She could do things that she could not do in England, like going shopping and to the hairdressers.

This was because as heir to the throne, she did not have as much freedom in England.

'Cause remember, she was part of the royal family.

She was a very important person as heir of the throne.

She would after all one day become queen.

So in England where everybody knew her, she couldn't just go shopping or go to the hairdressers, or go to the shops.

No, she used to have lots of people go with her.

But in Malta, not everybody knew her, and it was a quiet country.

So she was able to be free to do what she wanted.

The family stopped living in Malta after two years, in 1951.

So they didn't stay there for too long.

They stayed there for two years until 1951.

This black and white photograph shows Elizabeth with her family and what they would've looked like when they were living in Malta.

So you can see, Charles was still very young, he was a toddler, Anne was still a baby.

And this was just before Elizabeth became queen.

Let's have another check for understanding.

When did Elizabeth leave Malta? Did she leave in A, 2021, B, 1951, or C, 1851? When did Elizabeth leave Malta? Pause the video and have a think.

Elizabeth left Malta in 1951.

That's right.

It can't have been 2021 because 2021 was only a couple of years ago, and it can't have been 1851 because that was a very long time ago, that was even before Elizabeth was born.

She left Malta in 1951.

So we have our task now, our activity, our last and final activity of today's lesson.

I'd like you to match the words to the correct meanings.

So look very carefully at the words and look at these meanings and try to match them together.

Pause the video and have a go.

Welcome back.

How did you get on with that task? Whoa, let's do it together.

Let's try and do this together and figure this out.

So the first word we had was empire.

What does empire mean? Hmm.

Empire is a collection of countries ruled by the rulers of another country.

Our second word was Commonwealth.

What does Commonwealth mean? Commonwealth is a collection of countries that used to be ruled by the rulers of another country.

So Commonwealth countries used to be part of the British Empire, but they aren't anymore because they have their own rulers now.

And the last word is Malta.

What is Malta? That's one of our keywords, Malta.

Malta is a small island near Italy.

And if you remember, Malta is where Elizabeth and her family lived for two years after they got married.

Great, well done by having a go at the activity.

You did so well.

And just like that, our lesson is now over.

You have done really well, learning all about Elizabeth's early life with her family and what her life was like after she got married and when she had children.

Let's summarise what we've learned.

So we learned that after their marriage, Elizabeth and Philip had their first child, Charles.

They lived in Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace, we learned, was the place where the royal family lived.

It was the royal home of the royal family.

And Buckingham Palace is in London.

After two years, they had another child, Anne, and she was born at Clarence House, also in London.

Elizabeth looked after the children in England and Philip continued his career in the Royal Navy.

He travelled a lot.

So Philip had a career in the Royal Navy and Elizabeth had to look after the children whilst he travelled a lot.

But between 1949 and 1951, Elizabeth and her family lived in Malta as Philip was stationed there.

So this hot and quiet island, Malta, used to be part of the British Empire.

It used to be ruled by the British royal family, but is now part of the Commonwealth.

It now has its own ruler.

Wow! That's a lot of things we've learned today, all about Elizabeth's life with her family very early on.

You've done really well paying attention.

And I can't wait to see you on our next lesson and find out what else we have to learn about Elizabeth's life and what it was like.

So I will see you on our next lesson.

Goodbye for now.
