Hello and welcome back to another lesson with me, Mrs Chowdery, as we look back at the past.
Today, we're going to carry on learning about Queen Elisabeth II, and what her life was like, so let's get started.
Today, we to be finding about a very important event that happened in Elizabeth's life.
We're gonna be talking about her marriage to Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark.
Now, by the end of this lesson, you'll be able to describe how Elizabeth came to marry Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark.
We're gonna hear all about their love story and how they met and eventually got married.
As always, we have some key words that we're gonna be focusing on.
Now, this lesson has three keywords.
We have three key words.
Our first keyword is Royal Navy.
Let's try a bit of my turn and your turn.
My turn, royal Navy, your turn.
Good job, the second keyword is engaged.
Engaged, my turn, engaged, your turn.
Fantastic, and the third and final keyword for this lesson is Westminster Abbey, my turn, Westminster Abbey.
Your turn.
Great, so those are our three key words that we will be learning about in this lesson.
Let's move on.
Our lesson today is divided into two parts.
There are two parts to this lesson.
The first part will be all about their love story.
Philip and Elizabeth's love story.
The second part will be about their engagement and marriage.
Remember, engagement was one of our key words.
Let's begin by finding out about their love story.
You remember our timeline? Great, let's take a look and remind ourselves about Elizabeth's lives.
So we know that in 1926, Elizabeth was born.
She was a princess for quite some time until 1952 when Elizabeth became Queen, she ruled as a queen for a very, very long time until finally dying in 2022.
Now, this really important event in Elizabeth's life that we will be learning about today happened in 1947.
She got married in 1947, and this was only a couple of years before she became the Queen.
Now, Elizabeth first met Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark at a wedding in 1934.
It was a wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark and Prince George from the British royal family.
So this was a very important wedding between two royal families.
Elizabeth and Philip met again several times after this wedding.
So even though this was the first time they've ever met, they met again several times.
Look at this photograph.
We can see Elizabeth at the wedding.
She's sitting at the front on the floor dressed up in a very special and beautiful dress, and behind her is her father, the king.
In the middle, we can see the bride and the groom, and we can see other members of the royal family in this photograph too.
They are all posing for a photograph at the wedding.
Have you ever had to pose at a wedding before for a photograph? Maybe you stood like this with the bride and groom, or perhaps you sat down on the floor like Elizabeth.
Let's move on.
Now Prince Philip was from the Royal families of Greece and Denmark.
He went to school in Britain, France and Germany.
So even though he was from the royal families of other countries, he still went to school in lots of other countries too.
And this photograph, this very old black and white photograph shows Philip with friends during his school years.
So this is what he looked like when he went to school.
They look like they're very busy doing something, don't they? I think they are painting a boat.
Great, and let's have a check for understanding.
Can you finish off this sentence? Philip was the prince of A, England, B, Greece and Denmark.
Or C, Greece.
Pause the video and have a think.
Philip was the prince of Greece and Denmark.
That's right, let's move on.
During the Second World War, Prince Philip served in the Royal Navy.
That's one of our key words for today.
Let's find out what it means.
Well, the Royal Navy is an army that battles on the sea.
It is made up of sailors, ships and submarines.
This photograph shows the ships in the Royal Navy that took part in the Second World War.
You might have learnt about Second World War.
And this photograph shows the ships from that time.
When he was in the Royal Navy, Philip was known for being a very good sailor and eventually became First Lieutenant, the second leader of a ship.
So he had a very, very important role, a very important job in the Royal Navy.
In this photograph, this black and white photograph, we can see Prince Philip in his Royal Navy uniform.
He's got lots of special badges on his jacket, which shows how important he is as well and some of the things that he has done.
Right, it's time for another check for understanding.
Can you complete this sentence? Can you finish this sentence off? The Royal Navy is A, an army based on land, B, an army based at sea, or C, an army based in mountains.
Pause the video and have a think.
The Royal Navy is an army based at sea.
That's right, remember we learnt about how it has ships, submarines and sailors.
And who worked in the Royal Navy? Prince Philip, that's right.
Prince Philip worked in the Royal Navy.
Now, Elizabeth stayed in touch with Prince Philip during the war.
They wrote letters to each other.
As they grew older, they started to like and love each other more.
So even though they first met at a wedding a very, very long time ago, they carried on meeting and writing to each other.
This photograph shows what Elizabeth would've looked like when they were writing to each other during the war.
The nation and Elizabeth celebrated when Second World War ended in 1945, they were so happy that the war had finally come to an end.
Elizabeth was 19 years old when the war came to an end.
Philip was no longer needed in the Royal Navy so he and Elizabeth met more person.
They stopped writing letters to each other and instead they just met up.
Let's have a check for understanding.
So true or false, Elizabeth and Philip were brother and sister, pause the video and have a think.
Elizabeth and Philip were brother and sister.
That statement is false, that's not true.
They were not a brother and sister.
Let's justify our answer.
So they weren't brother and sister, were they A, Elizabeth and Philip were two people who fell in love, or B, Elizabeth and Philip were two people who worked together.
Pause the video and have a think.
Let's find out which one of these was the right answer.
It's A, Elizabeth and Philip were two people who fell in love.
Great, let's move on.
It's time for our task.
I'd like you to fill in the gaps to complete the sentences.
Use the words below to help you.
Let me read out sentences to you.
Elizabeth first met Philip at a wedding in 1934.
Philip was the, of Greece and Denmark.
During the war.
Philip was a part of the, Elizabeth stayed in touch with Philip by writing, the Second World War in 1945, Elizabeth and and Philip fell in, pause the video and tried to complete the gaps.
Welcome back, how did you get on with that task? Well, let's do it together.
Elizabeth first met Philip at a wedding in 1934.
Philip was the Prince of Greece and Denmark.
During the war, Philip was a part of the Royal Navy, that's right.
Elizabeth stayed in touch with Philip by writing letters.
They wrote letters to each other.
The Second World War ended in 1945.
Elizabeth and Philip fell in love.
Great, wonderful for having a try at that activity.
Let's carry on with our learning.
Great, we're now halfway through our lesson.
We have our second part and final part to learn about.
We're now gonna be focusing the engagement and marriage of Elizabeth and Philip.
Later on In 1947, Prince Philip asked Elizabeth's father, King George the Sixth if he could marry Elizabeth.
This photograph is from around that time when he asked Elizabeth's father.
Let's see who's in this photograph.
We have Elizabeth.
She's standing next to someone who is actually standing next to it's Philip, that's right, she's standing next to Philip.
We also have King George the Sixth in the photograph.
And we have Queen Elizabeth, who is Elizabeth's mother.
They have the same name.
We also have Elizabeth's sister at the end there.
So this picture shows what they would've looked like during the time that Elizabeth and Philip were getting engaged.
That's one of our key words we're gonna find out about now.
So the king said yes.
When Philip went and asked Elizabeth's father if she could be married to him, the king said yes, and the couple became engaged.
Engaged means when two people agree to get married, Philip gave up his title as Prince of Greece and Denmark.
He was now called Philip Mountbatten.
This photograph shows Elizabeth and Philip at their engagement.
They're standing next to each other.
They're not married just yet, but they've agreed to get married.
And Philip has asked permission from Elizabeth's father if they could married.
They look very happy, don't they? To be finally getting married.
During the engagement, Elizabeth planned for her wedding, she saved up clothing rations to buy her wedding dress.
This was because even though the war was over, there was still not many clothes or much food for everyone.
So she still had to carry on with using rations to buy things and that including her wedding dress, even though she had a lot of money and the royal family was very rich, she still had to use the rations.
This photograph shows Elizabeth in her wedding dress later on.
So it's time for a check for understanding.
Is this statement true or false? Elizabeth bought her wedding dress with clothing rations.
Is that true or false? Pause the video and have a think.
That statement is true.
Now let's justify our answer.
Which one of these is right? Is it A, even after the war had ended, clothes were still hard to find as there were shortages.
Or B, Elizabeth had no money.
Why did she buy her wedding dress with clothing rations? Pause the video and have a think.
The right answer is A.
So Elizabeth bought her wedding dress with clothing rations because even after the war had ended, clothes were still hard to find as there were shortages.
Well done for having a go.
Now Elizabeth and Philip got married on the November, 1947.
This photograph shows the royal family on Philip and Elizabeth's wedding day.
We can see they're all standing on the balcony and they're waving at everybody.
They're waving at the public.
See the king standing on the end there.
We can see some bridesmaids.
I mean, we can also see Elizabeth's mother and grandmother.
They all look very, very happy and very pleased about this wedding.
The wedding ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey.
That's one of our key words for today.
Westminster is a church in London where many members of the royal family have got married.
It's also where kings are crowned.
So this church is very special to the royal family.
We look very carefully at this photograph, we can see Elizabeth and Philip at the altar.
This picture shows their very tall wedding cake.
Can you see how tall this wedding cake is? Wow, have you ever been to a wedding before? And did they have a cake as tall as this one? Now, Elizabeth arrived at Westminster Abbey by horse and carriage.
Lots of people came to watch the royal wedding.
This photograph shows the horse and carriage pulling Elizabeth and Philip in, and you can see the crowds of people watching as they are brought in.
Wow, doesn't that look like a very special event or special occasion this is? It's time for our final task.
So what I'd like you to do is put the events in order of what happened.
One has been done already.
So we looked at a timeline at the start of our lesson.
I'd like you to put these events in order.
These are the events, Elizabeth and Philip got married at Westminster Abbey.
Elizabeth and Philip got engaged.
Elizabeth wrote letters to Philip when he served in the Royal Navy.
Have a go at ordering these events.
Welcome back, how did you get on with that task? Well, great.
Let's have a go at doing it together.
So the first thing that happened in 1934 was that Elizabeth first met Philip.
Do you remember where they first met? Yes, they met at a wedding in 1934.
The second thing to happen was that Elizabeth wrote letters to Philip when he served in the Royal Navy.
And that was during the Second World War.
In 1947, Elizabeth and Philip got engaged and later on in 1947, Elizabeth and Philip got married at Westminster Abbey.
Wonderful, great, good job at having a go at that.
So it's time to summarise what we have learnt today, because you have done a great deal of learning and we have finally reached the end of our lesson.
We've learned that Elizabeth met Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark many times before the war.
So even though they first met in 1934 at a wedding, they met many, many times again before the war.
Now, during the second World War, they wrote each other letters.
He was serving in the Royal Navy at the time.
And do you remember what the Royal Navy was? That's right.
It's an army that serves on sea, it is made up of ships, submarines and sailors.
After the ended in 1945, they got engaged and that was another one of our keywords.
Do you remember what engaged means? Yes, it's when two people agree to get married.
So Philip went and asked Elizabeth's father, King George the Sixth, if he could marry Elizabeth.
And her father said yes, so they got engaged.
Elizabeth had to use clothing rations to pay for her wedding dress.
This was because even though the war had come to an end, there were still limits on clothes and money.
Elizabeth and Philip married at Westminster Abbey on the 20th of November, 1947, and it was a very grand ceremony and lots of people came to watch and there was a very tall wedding cake that we looked at as well.
Well, it has been wonderful learning all about Elizabeth's marriage to Philip and you have been able to even order and describe how they met, got engaged and got married.
So I'll see you in our next lesson, goodbye.
