Hi everyone, and elcome to a history lesson with me, Miss Emms. And let's see what we're going to be doing today.
So, in today's lesson.
This is our key question.
We're going to be exploring this question in today's lesson: How has improved transport made the world more connected? And this is lesson 1 of 2.
And you are learning with me, Miss Emms. Okay, let's make a start.
So here is our lesson agenda.
We're going to start off with our star words, so our important words that we need to be able to understand, so that we can do today's learning, followed by a recap.
And this recap will be our previous learning in this whole unit changes within living memory.
After that we're going to have a look at a timeline, so I can help you see, which time period, we are learning about.
And then we're going to think about some developments in transport.
After this, we're going to move on to an End of lesson quiz, and that will be a chance for you to see how a lot of today's learning, you've been able to remember.
So, you're going to need three things in this lesson.
But first what we're going to need is some paper.
you'll also need a pencil, and you will need your brain to be working really hard.

Here are our star words.

Our first star word is transport.

Transport refers to all the ways that people move around.
Today we're going to think about how transport has improved and this means that the world is more connected.

In the context of this lesson.
That means that it's easier for me to get or for you to get to different places.
The world is more connected.
Okay, we're actually going to stay connected.
Your turn.
And our last star word is world.
Your turn.
So we're thinking about transport, all over the world.
A quick recap, we learned about how the ways in which we listen to music have changed over time.
So we learned about the movements from cassettes to CDs to mp3 players to smartphones which is how we currently most often listen to music.
And we learned about the progression in toys, the changes in toys.
So, generally we can say that toys started off, really being made from wood, moving on to plastic, and then, electronic toys, which is the most modern toy.
And we had a go arranging these toys from the oldest to the most modern.
We decided the oldest was the? Put your finger on it.
Great, the rocking horse, followed by the Lego, followed by the most modern, which was the video game or the computer game.
We also spoke about how options for eating in restaurants and ordering food to be delivered, have increased over the last 60 years.
And we thought about foods that are popular, or come from different continents.
I wonder, can you remember the continent that these foods come from? Tell your screen, these fields are popular in.
Well done.
These foods are popular in Asia.
So here is our timeline, it seems to be a couple of lessons before now.
So I'm just going to show you for a short while.
We've got today, so 2020.
And here we've got 2000.
You can see that 1900 was when the last.
So that's a hundred years ago from 2000.
And here was when Miss Emms was born.
And here was when my granny was born, so that helps me to see the timeline that we're going to be thinking about.
But in today's lesson, we are thinking about the last 60 years, and we could ask our grandparents, parents, parents and carers about this time period.
That's when we say that this time period is within living memory, because there are people who are still alive, who we can ask about this time period.
The last 60 years, so from 1960 to 2020, and that is where we are today.
Before we start, I would like you to pause the video and have a think of what forms of transport can you think of already before we start.
I will give you one idea.
One form of transport that I can think of is a car.
Can you think of any other forms of transport? Pause the video and either write them down, or tell your screen.

Starting with cars.
Having a look at our timeline, cars became widely available in the early 20th century.
Okay? So how on our timeline we've got from 1960 to 2020.
So within the last 60 years, but cars became widely available before that, they became widely available, that means lots of people started to have them in the early 20th century.
In the? Well done.
So before 1960.
Here is a picture of an old car.
Okay, so this is the style of car that would have been around before cars developed and became more modern.
And you can see that it looks really different to this much more modern car.
I want you to have a look at the differences between these two costs.
And I wonder, can you tell your screen what the differences are.
I think the differences are.
Good, tell your screen.

Let's move on.
We can see another two pictures here one is our modern car, and the other is of a car from a while ago.
The other picture is of a car from when cars first became widely common.
I wonder, can you point to the picture of the modern car? Right, hopefully you put your finger on this picture here.
And can you point to the picture of the older car? Well done, amazing job.
Hopefully you've got your finger on this picture here on the right hand side.
Let's have a thing now about trains.
Trains became popular in the 19th century.
This was before cars were widely used.
So that means that trains were widely used and were popular before cars were widely used in the 19th century.
So much before the time period that's in living memory.
Trains enabled people to travel between towns and cities, much more easily than they had been able to before.
So people can travel between towns and cities, between different places across the country, much more easily than they had been able to before, because they were able to board trains to do this, and they hadn't been able to do that before.
This means that the world became much more connected.
Since trains arrived and since since trains became possible to use.
They have become faster, and they've become more efficient.
That means that when trains first were used in the 19th century, the same journey would have taken a lot longer.
and it would have been less efficient than now.
Trains have developed lots over time Here you can see two pictures.
I wonder which one do you think is an early train, so an older style train? You're right, The steam train at the top, and which one do you think is a modern train? You're right.
The picture beneath.
They become much faster and much more efficient.
I want you to complete this sentence now trains have become 'mm' and 'mm'.
What two words to be used to explain or describe the changes that have happened to the trains.
They become more.
And.

Hopefully you've got faster and more efficient, faster and more efficient.

Here's a question for you.
Do you think a train journey between London and Edinburgh takes more or less time now than I did 100 years ago? Point to more time if you think more time, point to less time if you think it would take less time.
Hopefully you've put your finger on less time because we know that trains become faster and more efficient, it will take much less time now to get a train from London to Edinburgh, than it did 100 years ago.
It would have taken longer and it would have been less efficient.
So now, it takes less time.
You should have had your finger on the green on less time.
So how's the world more connected? Not only can we now travel between different towns and cities in the UK.
But we can also use the train to travel from parts of the UK to other parts of Europe.
We've learned about Europe being one of the continents.
So you can now catch a train from the UK to other parts of Europe.
And why is this so important? This means that if people have friends who are living, not in the same place as them, so it might be in other parts of Europe or perhaps in the UK, trains enable us to see these people more easily.
To see family, to go on holiday, we might not get a train or we might get a train, we might fly, we might go on a plane, we're going to learn more about planes in the next lesson.
And also when people need to travel for work.
So it's really important that the world has become more connected, because now people are much more easily able to do these things, friends, family holiday and work.
These are the main areas where there have been big improvements in how our world is really connected.
