Let's get started.

Okay, today we are going to be exploring this key question.

How has improved transport made the world more connected? And this is lesson two of two, and you're learning with me, Miss Emms. Okay, let's get started.

Hopefully you've seen lesson one because we already had a think about how improved transport has made the world more connected, and we focused on cars and trains.

In today's lesson, we're going to continue with our learning.

So if you haven't watched lesson one, please make sure you do before you start this lesson.

Okay, let's have a look at our agenda.

So, we're going to start off with our Star Words.

Two important ones that we need to understand.

Then we're going to have a recap of previous learning, followed by a look at a timeline.

And then we're going to move on to the main part of the lesson, developments in transport.

We will then finish with an end of lesson quiz, where you can see how much of today's learning you've been able to remember, okay.

In this lesson you're going to need three things.

You will need some paper, you will need a pencil and you will need your brain.

Great, the first Star Word is transport, your turn.

Great, so transport refers to how people move around.

We've already had to think about cars and trains, and today we're going to move on from that.

Connected, let's do an action like this.

The world is more connected, our actions going to be connected, your turn.

Great, and then the world, your turn, the? Okay, amazing.

So a recap.

Can you point to the oldest toy on the screen? And why do you think it's the oldest? Because it's made from wood, well done.

What is the most modern toy on the screen do you think, the? The video game or the computer game, because it's electronic.

Because it is? Great, and so in the middle, we would put the Lego, which is made from P-P-P, plastic, well done.

Okay, options for eating in restaurants and ordering food to be delivered, have increased or decreased over the last 60 years? Tell your screen.

You're right, they've increased over the last 60 years.

And these foods are popular in, or these foods come from which continent? Tell your screen if you can remember.

Okay, so here is our timeline that you've seen before in the previous lessons of this unit, reminding us that we've got 1900 over here.

And then a hundred years later, we've got 2000.

And we today, are in 2020.

Here's when Miss Emms was born.

And here's when Miss Emm's granny was born.

And the last 60 years is a period that we can ask our grandparents, parents, and carers about.

And that's why we say it's within living memory.

It's within? Great! So, here we've got our years from 1960 to 2020.

So the last 60 years, that's our time period.

We are going to think first of all, about aeroplanes.

So we were already had a think in the lesson before this one, about cars and about trains.

And today we're going to start off thinking about aeroplanes.

So, aeroplanes became common in the middle of the 20th century.

That's when they became widely used or common.

So, you can see on our timeline, the middle of the 20th century refers to around 1950, 1960.

That's the middle of the 20th century, okay? I want you to complete the sentence, aeroplanes first became popular in the middle of the? Which century, can you remember? Tell your screen? Great, well done.

So, here you can see two pictures of two different aeroplanes.

Which one do you think is most modern? Which one looks more like an aeroplane that you would see in the sky today, carrying lots of people? This one, you're right.

And this is a picture of an older aeroplane, and you can see how much they have changed.

Can you tell your screen? What is the main difference do you think between these two aeroplanes? Great, well done.

So again, here you can see a picture of a modern aeroplane.

And aeroplanes over time have become faster and much more efficient, okay? So over time, aeroplanes have become faster and more efficient.

So although they started being widely used in the middle of the 20th century, since then, they have kept on developing to become faster and more efficient.

Okay, have planes become faster with time or slower with time? Say the sentence.

Planes have become? Great, planes have become faster, well done.

Do you think a plane journey between the UK, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand takes more or less time now, than it did 50 years ago? So 50 years ago, when planes started to be common, do you think it takes more time or less time now than 50 years ago? Point to the answer that you think is correct.

Hopefully you've got your finger on less time.

A plane journey would take much less time now in the present day, than it did 50 years ago.

Because remember, we know that planes have become faster and more efficient.

So now, the same distance journey would take much less time.

So, if we're thinking about the aeroplane journey from the United Kingdom to Sydney in Australia.

So there's a picture of the continent of Australasia, and we've got Australia here.

And we're thinking about Sydney in Australia.

So in 1947, okay, so roughly in the middle of the 20th century, this journey took four days.

How long did this journey take? Around four days in 1947, around four days.

Whereas now, this journey takes around 22 hours, which is just less than a full day.

So it's a much shorter journey in time now than it was in the middle of the 20th century.

And that shows you how much aeroplanes have become faster as they have developed.

Now, it also used to be much more expensive, and few people could afford it.

So in 1947, as we've said, when it took roughly four days to travel from the United Kingdom to Sydney, not only was the journey much, much longer, it took a much longer time.

It was also much more expensive.

So people would not do it as much, and very few people could afford to pay for that journey.

Whereas now, although the journey is still expensive, it takes less time and it's much less expensive.

Okay, let's move on to space travel.

Now, this man is very important, his name is Yuri Gagarin.

What's his name? And on April the 12th, 1961, he was the first person in space.

Now since then, there've been lots of developments in space travel, but this is an important fact for us to remember.

On April the 12th, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first person to go, to be in space, okay.

And space travel has developed and continued ever since then.

So now, not only are people able to fly to other parts of the world, but astronauts are also able to fly to space, okay.

Okay, When did Yuri Gagarin and go to space? Can you remember, was it 1961 or 1971? Can you say the sentence to your screen? Yuri Gagarin went to space in? Amazing, hopefully you said 1961.

Okay, 12th of April, 1961.

And also now, there is such a thing as space tourism.

Now, if you're a tourist, that means that often when we talk about tourism, we're talking about people going on holiday.

So you're visiting that place.

So space tourism is possible, but it is very expensive.

And very few people have been tourists in space.

That means that you're not an astronaut, but you pay a lot of money to visit space.

Possible, but very expensive.
