Hi everyone and welcome to a history lesson with me, Miss Emms. Let's see what we're going to be doing today.
So, in today's lesson, this is our key question.
How have toys changed? And this is lesson one of two with me Miss Emms. So, we're continuing on in the unit about changes within living memory.
We've thought about musical words in two lessons that came before this.
And now we're going to be thinking about toys and how toys have changed over time.
First things first, let's go through our agenda.
So, we're going to start off with some star words, some important words that we need to be able to understand, so that we can access today's learning.
And then we're going to have a little recap.
After that we're going to look at our timeline and then we're going to answer the question, how have toys changed? At the end of the lesson, it will be time for the end of lesson quiz, where you can see how much you've been able to remember from today's learning.
Okay, you're going to need three things in this lesson.
You'll need some paper; you'll need a pencil and you'll need your brain.
Now your brain is already there and I'm sure it's already working hard.
If you need to go and get your paper and your pencil, then pause the video now, and go and get those things.
Pause now.
Great, well done.
Now you're ready.
Let's get started.
So, here are our star words, my turn, your turn, star words, star words, star words.
Right, the first star word really important one is toys, your turn? I'm sure that you have lots of toys and that you love playing with toys.
Today, we're going to think about how toys have changed and what they used to look like and be made of.
The next star word is playing, your turn? Right.
We're going to think about the ways in which playing with toys has changed over time and how children's approaches to playing with toys has changed and developed.
And finally, modern technology, your turn? Right.
We're going to be thinking about how modern technology has meant that toys have advanced and changed over time.
Okay.
A quick recap now, we had two lessons on thinking about how popular music has changed in the last 60 years.
And we learnt what these four things were called.
I'm going to give you the first one cause I'm feeling kind.
I would like you to write down the names of the next three.
So, the first one was a cassette.
Okay.
Can you write down the names of the next three items on your screen.
Pause the video, and off you go.
Great.
Well done.
Hopefully you got cassette, CD, MP3 or MP3 player and smart phone.
If you need to pause the video to tick or fix, then you can do that now.
Right.
Let's move on.
So, we had cassettes, CDs, MP3s, and smart phones.
When we were thinking about the ways in which we listen to music and how those ways have changed over time.
So, our minds are off our timeline now, everybody.
We are currently in the year 2020, so we're overhead.
Here is the year 2000, and 100 years before that, 19 hundred.
My granny was born around here and I Miss.
Emms, was born around here.
That gives you an idea of the last 120 years.
But we are just going to be thinking about the last 60 years.
Okay.
So we can ask our grandparents, parents and our carers about this time period And we could ask our grandparents, parents and carers, which toys they used to play with.
Okay.
So it's a time period that we can ask our grandparents, parents and carers about.
That means it's within living memory.
Okay? So, the last 60 years we've got 1960 joining and if you can, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020.
And we are currently in the year, 2020.
Well done.
So, before we start, I wonder, what toys do you like to play with? Can you tell either your screen or perhaps you've got a teddy talk partner that you'd like to use at home or at school.
Can you tell your teddy or your screen, what do you like to play with? I like to play with? Go tell your screen.
Right.
Well done.
Now, if you're around a parent or a carer, Can you ask them, which toys did they like to play with when they were a child? So, you can say, when you were a child, which toys did you like to play with? If there's someone that you can ask that question to, can you pause the video and ask it now? Right.
Well done.
Okay.
So, We're going to have a look at how toys have changed.
I want you to start off by looking at these pictures of these toys.
So, we've got a toy aeroplane, some other toy, wooden toy aeroplanes , some toy trucks or cars and something that's called a spinning top that you can spin on a surface.
Now having a look carefully at these toys, and now I'd like you to have a look at these toys.
So, an electric truck, okay.
An electronic game that you can play on a computer, another computer game and a controller for a video game.
How do you think toys have changed? What are the main differences that you can see between these toys and these toys? Tell your screen.
I think, right.
Well done, for your initial thoughts on how you think toys have changed.
We're going to learn what's happened next.
So, the difference between this toy on the left and this toy on the right.
Now, we know from the previous slides, we know that toys have developed and changed a lot over the last 60 years, but let's think how specifically.
Think about the material now, what material is this toy made off? Wood.
Well done.
And what material is this toy made of? Plastic.
Well done.
The materials are different for each of these toys.
So, the materials that I use to make toys are changing and developing over time.
What about these two toys here? On the left we've got some Lego and, on the right, we've got a game that you can play on the computer.
What's the difference between these toys here? The difference is, tell your screen.
Right.
So, on the left, we've got Lego made out of plastic and on the right, we've got an electronic toy.
Okay.
A game that you can play on a computer.
So, wildly We can think of toys made from wood, toys made from? Well done.
Toys made from plastic and electronic toys.
Now this doesn't mean that we don't still have toys made from wood or plastic and not all toys are electronic, but generally, there was a progression from toys made from wood to toys being made from plastic to electronic toys.
Let's have a look at some toys made from wood.
So, we've got a rocking horse.
We've got this figurine, we've got these wooden blocks, and we've got another beautiful rocking horse there as well.
Now I wonder, have you got any of these toys in your home? You might, but it might be less common that you have these toys than some plastic and electronic toys.
But within the last 60 years before technology allowed toys to advance, these toys were really popular and really fun to play with.
And children would probably play with these toys either by themselves or with their friends or family.
So, do you have any wooden toys? and why do you like this toy If you have? You're going to tell your screen.
I have a, hm.
I like this toy because, hm.
Off you go pause the video and tell your screen.
Right.
Well done.
Now why is wood a good material for toys? Use these words to help you, strong and durable.
Why is wood a good material for toys? You can say to a screen.
Wood is a good material for toys Because? Go, tell your screen.
Well done.
Wood is a good material for toys because it's strong and durable.
That means it last for a long time.
It's not going to break easily strong and durable.
Let's move on to toys made from plastic now.
So, you've got some Lego, some plastic toys that you would use on the beach, in the sand, some plastic trucks and a plastic figure hair.
So, these toys are all made from the material, papa pap, plastic.
Well done.
I wonder if you have any plastic toys in your home and if so, why do you like this toy? Can you tell your screen? I have a, hm, I like this toy because, hm.
Ready? Pause the video, off you go.
Right.
Well done everyone.
Thank you for telling me about your plastic toys.
And now, why is plastic a good material for toys.
You're going to use these words to help you.
Wash, clean and shaped.
Shaped maybe a bit trickier.
Don't worry if you can't fit that into the sentence, but wash and clean especially.
Plastic is a good material for toys because, go.
Well done.
You might have said something like plastic is a good material for toys because it can be washed and cleaned easily.
And also, it can be shaped into lots of different shapes before it becomes the shape of the toy.
You can shape plastic into lots of different shapes.
So, toys can be lots of different shapes and sizes.
Great.
And electronic toys.
So, here are some examples of electronic toys.
So electronic toys we've got a truck, we've got an electronic computer game, two of those and the controller for a video game.
I wonder if you have got any electronic toys, and why do you like this toy If you have? Have a look around your home, don't worry if you can't find any.
If you have, can you say I have a, hm.
I like this toy because hm.
Ready, off you go.
Pause the video now.
Great.
Well done.
So, which toys do you think is older from these two toys? You're going to say, I think that either Lego or rocking horse is older, because and why.
Can you write down the sentence? Ready? Pause.
Off you go.
Well done.
Hopefully you said something like, I think the rocking horse is older because it's made from wood.
Well done.
What about here? Which toy do you think is older? So, either the electronic truck, or you could say the small trucks are older if you think they are older, because and why.
Pause the video, and write down your sentence.
Right? Well done.
Now, hopefully you said, I think the small plastic trucks are older and you could say, because they're not electronic.
Now this doesn't necessarily mean that they are older.
You can still buy plenty of small plastic toys like this, but we know that electronic toys are even more modern and advanced because they are electronic.
Whereas, the one on ones on the right are made from plastic.
And finally, I think that, hm, is older because? Write down your third sentence.
Pause the video off you go.
Well done.
Hopefully you got, I think the rocking horse is older because it's made from woods.
Well done.
Pause the video.
If you need to tick or fix your answers.
Now, our last task, can you arrange these toys from oldest to most modern? So, you've got three pictures.
I want you to either draw them or write them in order from oldest to most modern.
Pause the video, and off you go.
Right.
Well done.
Hopefully you put them in this order, the rocking horse, the Lego, and finally the electronic computer game.
Pause the video.
If you need to tick or fix what answers.
Amazing.
Well done.
And now, it's going to be time for the end of lesson quiz, to see how much you've been able to remember from today's learning.
You've done a great job.
You should feel really proud.
Can I have a high 10 ready? Three, two, one.
ah Amazing.
I will see you next time.
Bye.
