Hello historians and welcome to today's history lesson.

I'm Mr. Moss and I'm incredibly passionate about history, and I can't wait to teach you today.

With you today, you need to bring your looking eyes, your listening ears, and your thinking brains.

As well as that, someone or something to talk to would be excellent, and having something to write on and write with would also be really helpful.

All right, let's get straight into today's history lesson then.

I can't wait.

In this history lesson, we're going to be looking at Victoria, Queen Victoria's proposal and marriage to her eventual husband Albert.

The outcome will be, I can describe Victoria's marriage to Albert.

Here are the keywords for today's learning.

People with different parents, but the same grandparents are called cousins.

Say that word for me, cousins.

Victoria and Albert were in fact, cousins.

The next keyword is handsome.

Something or someone that has a pleasing and healthy appearance can be described as handsome.

Albert was said to have been handsome.

When two people marry, say that word for me, marry, they promise to spend their lives together in a ceremony that is watched by other people, is witnessed by others.

And when someone asks someone else to marry them, they propose.

Fantastic.

So today, we're gonna be looking carefully at the relationship between Queen Victoria and her husband Albert.

The two were cousins.

Queen Victoria proposed to Albert and they were eventually married.

Here are the two learning cycles for today's lesson.

We are learning about Victoria's proposal and marriage to Albert.

We're going to first consider how Victoria met Albert and the early parts of their relationship and then we're going to look at their marriage, Victoria marrying Albert.

Let's get on then with how Victoria met Albert.

So when Victoria was still a princess, she met her cousin Albert for the first time on her 17th birthday.

Remember that cousins are people with different parents but the same grandparents.

So a young Victoria before she became queen, a year before she became queen in fact, remember she became queen at the age of 18 in 1837, met a young Albert.

This is Albert here.

Albert was the same age as Victoria and he was a German prince.

He was Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg.

You can see an image of him here.

He's dressed rather regally which shows us that he was a royal and important person.

Lots of people including Victoria describe Prince Albert as being very handsome.

Remember someone that's handsome is pleasing in appearance.

So what did Victoria think about her cousin Albert? A, he was boring, B, he was handsome, or C, he was scruffy.

Think about the evidence that I've given to you already.

Select the correct answer now.

Off you go.

Great job.

Well, we don't have evidence to say that he was boring, but we do have evidence that people of the time including Victoria herself thought he was handsome.

Scruffy would be quite the opposite of handsome, wouldn't it? So as soon as they met, Victoria and Albert felt a strong connection but they were not ready to marry yet.

Remember they were both quite young, and within the next year Victoria would also accede to the throne.

A very busy and important time in her life.

This was the start of their love story which would last for the rest of their lives.

There have been many movies and TV programmes made about their love story.

When they were apart, Princess Victoria thought about Albert a lot because she missed him.

Remember she at the time was obviously living in the United Kingdom but he was living in Germany which is where he was from.

So, they were living apart.

The two would write letters to each other.

Here we have a painting of Victoria at her coronation.

Remember how young she was when she was crowned? When she suddenly became queen at the age of 18 it changed everything for them.

Who do you agree with? Sam or Alex? Talk to a partner and explain your thinking.

Princess Victoria was not ready to marry Albert when they met.

That's what Sam says.

Alex says Princess Victoria wasn't sure if she liked Albert when they met.

Who do you agree with? Who's correct? And explain how you know that they're correct or incorrect.

Off you go.

Brilliant.

Really good reasoning there.

Lovely full sentence answers and I loved hearing you converse about the history.

So, Princess Victoria was not ready to marry Albert when they met.

This is true, isn't it? Sam is correct.

However, Alex is incorrect.

Princess Victoria wasn't sure if she liked Albert when they met.

This is not true.

We know that they did in fact fall in love with each other and that they did like each other very much.

We have evidence of her even saying that she thought that he was handsome.

So, Sam is correct.

Victoria liked Albert very much and missed him when they were apart.

They even wrote letters to each other, but they were too young or very young to get married at the time.

Also within that next year of her life, she was going to accede to the throne.

A very busy time for her.

So, for our practise task now what I'd like you to do is to complete the sentences by filling in the blanks with a word from the box below.

The words that we have below include some of our keywords.

We have the words handsome, marry, Albert, and cousin.

Remember that word handsome means that if someone or something has a pleasing and healthy appearance.

Marriage is where you make a commitment to someone that is witnessed by other people.

Albert is the name of Queen Victoria's cousin whom she fell in love with and a cousin is a relation that has the same grandparents but different parents.

So, read the sentences carefully.

Fill in the blanks with the correct words.

Off you go.

Brilliant job team.

Really really impressed.

You clearly picked up so much information from this first learning cycle.

So, here are the words placed correctly within the sentences.

Let's read through them and see how you did.

Victoria met Albert on her 17th birthday.

He was the same age remember and they were both very young.

Albert was Victoria's cousin.

He was in fact Victoria's mother's brother's son.

Remember a cousin is a relation that has the same grandparents, but a different parent.

Victoria thought he was a very handsome prince.

We even have evidence of her saying this from the time.

Princess Victoria liked Albert very much, but they were not ready to marry at that time.

They were both very young and remember in the next year of her life she was going to accede to the throne and become Queen of the United Kingdom.

So we've looked at how they met.

Remembering that they met when they were 17 years old and very young and that they fell in love.

That they weren't ready to marry yet.

This is what we're now going look at in our next learning cycle.

Victoria marrying Albert.

So, here we can see an illustration from 1840 imagining what it looked like when Queen Victoria proposed to Albert.

Remember that when you propose, you ask someone to marry you and it was Queen Victoria that asked Albert to marry her.

This is an illustration from the time imagining what it would have looked like.

This is not an actual image of it happening.

You can see it actually says, Albert, will you marry me as well? Imagining how she asked him.

A year after becoming Queen, on the 15th of October 1839, Victoria decided to propose to Prince Albert.

If you propose, you ask someone to marry you.

This meant that she asked him to then marry her.

Victoria and Albert loved each other very much.

And a date was set for their wedding, for them to be witnessed committing themselves to each other.

They were married in February 1840, only four months after Victoria decided to propose to ask him to marry her.

You can see here, our figure here is saying, I went to my auntie Sue's wedding last summer.

She wore a beautiful white dress.

Many of you may have experienced or been part of a wedding ceremony before.

I wonder where it happened.

I wonder what people wore.

I wonder how people felt.

They're quite often very joyous and happy occasions.

So, if a person decides to propose to someone, what are they going to do? Are they going to ask them to borrow something, ask them to marry them, or C ask them to go on a walk? Pause the video now and select the correct answer.

What does the word propose mean? Brilliant job team! Absolutely it means to ask someone to marry them.

You're not asking someone to borrow something and you're not asking for them to go on a walk.

And we have been looking at Victoria's proposal to Prince Albert.

So the wedding of Queen Victoria, and Prince Albert took place in the Royal Chapel of St.

James's Palace in London.

You can see here from this painting that it was a very regal ceremony.

Members of their family from all over Europe came to visit and to take part in it.

You can see Victoria in the centre there in her white dress and Albert dressed in red and white as well.

As they were both royalty, this would have been a very impressive service and ceremony, with huge celebrations afterwards.

From the moment they were married, it was clear that the young couple were very happy and very much in love.

We have here an illustration of the happy couple on their wedding day.

You can see Victoria on the left in her white dress and Albert looking very handsome on the right.

Albert and Victoria did truly love each other very much.

Albert himself was very fascinated in the natural sciences, languages, art, and music, and he was an accomplished musician, even writing many compositions.

Queen Victoria kept diaries throughout her life and these are really important sources of evidence for us as historians to know about her life accurately.

When she wrote about her wedding day, she said, and this is a quote, "Oh, this was the happiest day of my life." So, we have evidence there to show how truly in love they were.

Their wedding day was the happiest day of her life.

And here we have another source, a painting of Queen Victoria in her wedding dress, dressed in white.

This then became a very popular fashion trend for weddings, the bride wearing white.

So, let's have a little check and see if you've been listening.

How do we know that Queen Victoria was in love with Prince Albert? Consider some of the examples of evidence that we've looked at.

Consider the things I've taught you.

Share your ideas with a partner or with me directly.

I'll say again, how do we know that Queen Victoria was in love with Prince Albert? Off you go.

Excellent.

I loved hearing your ideas there.

And you've clearly been picking up on lots of the learning that I've been talking about.

I loved also people thinking about that evidence that we just looked at a moment ago from Queen Victoria's own diary.

So, Queen Victoria kept diaries about what her life was like and how she felt.

Yes, she said her wedding was the happiest day of her life.

We know too that she thought he was handsome.

We know also that they clearly were in love because they committed themselves to each other, and were married.

We know also that they thought about each other a lot before they were engaged, or before she proposed because they thought about each other, and wrote letters to each other.

So, for our practise task right now what I'd like us to do is put the events in the correct order.

Can we put these into chronological order, which means time order? You can use the numbers one to four.

The events at the moment are out of order.

The first event is Queen Victoria and Prince Albert got married in London.

Princess Victoria met Albert on her 17th birthday, and she was very young.

He was the same age remember.

Queen Victoria wrote about the happiest day of her life.

Queen Victoria decided to propose to Prince Albert.

Could you put these in chronological order? The first event being number one, then the second being two, the third being three and then the last event in time order being four.

Pause the video, put those into the correct order now.

Off you go.

Excellent job team, I'm really impressed.

So, we've managed to put these into time order, something that's really important for us to have an understanding of as historians, because we're looking at events that have occurred in the past.

So, the first one was Princess Victoria met Prince Albert on her 17th birthday.

And remember that they were cousins, both around the same age.

At this point, they were perhaps too young to get married and weren't ready.

Number two is Queen Victoria decided to propose to Prince Albert.

This was after she had become the Queen.

The third one, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert got married in London.

This occurred in St James's Chapel and was a large, regal, and royal celebration.

We know also from images at the time that Queen Victoria wore white dress during this wedding ceremony.

And finally, after this event, Queen Victoria wrote about the happiest day of her life.

She wrote about this in one of her diaries.

This is a key historical source for us to understand about her life during this period of time.

An interesting thing to note here is that they met whilst Victoria was a princess.

Yet they were proposed and married when she was queen and had acceded to the throne.

Excellent work today team.

We've been looking at Victoria's proposal and marriage to Albert.

The two were very much in love.

When she was 17 years old, Princess Victoria met her cousin Prince Albert and instantly connected with him.

He was very handsome.

We have evidence that she thought this.

Remember that a cousin or cousins are relations that have different parents, but the same grandparents.

They didn't marry when they first met, as they were both very young.

But after Victoria became queen, she decided to propose to Albert, and they were married four months later in 1840 in London, in St.

James's Chapel.

The couple were very happy and in love, and we have evidence of this.

Queen Victoria wrote about her happiness in her diary.

Now in this lesson, we've been looking at Queen Victoria who is a very significant historical figure in British history.

This moment in her life, or these moments of meeting Albert and then marrying him, were significant moments in her life.

As a monarch, it's also important that we consider the impact that this relationship may have had on the decisions that Queen Victoria made.

Keep up the great history work and I'll see you again soon.
