Hello, my name is Mrs. Tipping, and I'm really looking forward to learning with you today all about significant rulers from the past.

And we're going to explore the question, what can those rulers, their stories, what can they tell us? So shall we get started? Let's go.

By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to describe how Boudica's rebellion failed and how Boudica is still remembered today.

Before we start, I would like to introduce you to some keywords.

We'll be using these keywords during this lesson, so it might be a good idea to write these words down.

The keywords we'll be using today are rebellion, legend.

I'm going to say those again and I'd like you to repeat them after me.

Rebellion.

Legend.

Good job.

Now let's take a look at what these keywords mean by having a look at their definitions.

A fight against the people ruling you is called a rebellion.

A legend is a traditional story that might not always be true.

Pause the video here to make a note of these keywords and when you're ready to continue, press play.

These are the learning cycles that we're working through together in today's lesson.

Boudica's defeat.

How did Boudica die? In the first learning cycle, we will explore Boudica's defeat.

Now, the Ancient Romans heard about Boudica's rebellion and the attack on London.

What do you think they were thinking? Do you think they were happy about it? Well, the army, they started to march back from Wales towards the Roman road Watling Street, near Wroxeter in Shropshire.

It was here on Watling Street that the Roman Army and Boudica's army met.

So I don't think the Romans were very happy at all.

They marched back towards where Boudica was and you can see that on the map there.

and you see that Boudica would've come from Verulamium and then the Romans came from Wales and they met there on Watling Street.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Where did the two armies meet? Wales.

Londinium.

Watling Street.

Pause the video here and have a quick discussion with your partner and press play when you're ready to continue.

How did that go? If you said that they met on Watling Street, you're absolutely right.

Well done.

Now, it is believed that Boudica had the larger army at the battle.

The tribes were so sure they would defeat the Romans, that they brought their families with them in waggons to watch the battle.

So they really were quite confident.

However, the Roman soldiers were much more skilled at fighting than the tribes involved in the rebellion.

They had a strong chance of defeating Boudica because they were well-trained.

Disastrously, the waggons that the Celtic tribes brought with them were set up behind the battle and this actually trapped them in a valley between the Romans and their escape route.

That is very unfortunate indeed.

Let's take a moment to pause here and check our understanding.

Why did the Romans have a strong chance of defeating Boudica? They had a small army.

They were more skilled at fighting.

They had no weapons.

So pause the video here and have a moment to think.

Why did the Romans have such a strong chance of defeating Boudica? Press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said that the Romans were more skilled at fighting, you're absolutely right.

Well done.

Now, when Boudica and her warriors were trapped in the valley, the Ancient Romans attacked them.

Now Boudica and the tribes, they put up a good fight up against those skilled Romans, but thousands were killed.

Boudica and the rebellion were defeated.

Let's take a moment to pause here and let's take a look at this statement.

Is it true or false? Boudica defeated the Romans.

Pause the video here and take a moment to think.

Press play when you're ready to continue.

If you said that this is false, you're absolutely right.

Well done.

Now taking a look at these two statements, which of these would help to justify your answer? The Romans chased Boudica away.

The Romans trapped Boudica and killed many.

Pause the video here and have a quick discussion with your partner.

Which of these two statements would help to justify your answer? And press play when you're ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said the Romans trapped Boudica and killed many, then you're correct.

Well done.

This brings us to our first learning task.

I'd like you to describe to your learning partner how Boudica's rebellion failed.

And you may wanna include these words and phrases: larger army, skilled at fighting, trapped, defeated.

So pause the video here.

Make sure you give yourself enough time to describe to your learning partner how Boudica's rebellion failed and press play when you're ready to continue.

How did you get on? Shall we take a look at an example? So your answer may include: "Boudica's rebellion failed even though they had a larger army.

The Romans were more skilled at fighting.

They trapped Boudica and the rebellion in a valley and attacked them.

Boudica's rebellion was defeated." Well done if you were able to describe to your learning partner how Boudica's rebellion failed, and well done for completing that learning task.

This brings us to the second part of our lesson.

We're going to explore how Boudica died.

Now no one knows exactly how Boudica died, but there are legends that say after her defeat, Boudica and her two daughters drank poison to avoid being captured by the Romans.

It was that poison that killed them.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

A legend is a traditional story that is proven to be true.

This definition of the keyword legend is not correct.

Can you correct it? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner and press play when you're ready to continue.

How did you get on? Were you able to correct the definition? Well, a legend is a traditional story that is not proven to be true.

So well done if you were able to correct that definition.

So there is the legend about Boudica and her daughters drinking poison, but there is also another legend that says Boudica fell ill and died and that her daughters disappeared from the record of history and the lands of the Iceni and other tribes were destroyed.

So there are just two legends here and there may be more.

So we're still not sure exactly how Boudica died.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Sam and Alex are talking about how Boudica died.

Who is correct? Sam says, "Boudica and her two daughters died by drinking poison." And Alex says, "No, they didn't.

Boudica got ill and died." Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner, who is correct about how Boudica died, Sam or Alex? And press play when you're ready to continue.

So what did you think? Well, in this case, no one is actually correct.

We do not know how Boudica died.

There are only legends about her death.

So well done if you were able to spot that.

Now, even though Boudica's rebellion failed, she's still remembered today for her bravery in standing up against the Ancient Romans.

Now, there is a statue of Boudica in London outside the Houses of Parliament.

The statue is there to remind us of how strong and brave she was.

Take a look at that statue there.

You can see her standing on her chariot with the horses in front.

She's holding her spear.

Quite often the illustrations of Boudica involve her holding a spear.

She's clearly a very brave and strong individual.

Now, another way we remember Boudica is by learning about her story.

She was an important figure in history and we mustn't forget what she achieved.

We remember her strength and power and that she stood up for her tribe and refused to be ruled by someone else.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding here.

How is Boudica remembered? Statue.

Learning about her.

A festival.

Pause the video here and have a quick discussion with your partner.

How is Boudica remembered? And press play when you're ready to continue.

What did you think? Well, Boudica is remembered in a statue in London, and also she's remembered by us learning about her story.

Well done if you're able to say how Boudica is remembered.

This brings us to our final learning task.

I'd like you to write two or three sentences to describe how Boudica is still remembered today.

Here are some words to help you: rebellion, failed, statue, learn.

So pause the video here.

Make sure you give yourself enough time.

Make sure that you have a pen and some paper to write two or three sentences to describe how Boudica is still remembered today and press play when you're ready to continue.

How did that go? Shall we take a look at an example? So your answer could include: "Although Boudica's rebellion failed, she's still remembered today.

There is a statue of her and her daughters in London that reminds us of her bravery.

We also learn about Boudica's story today to remember how brave she was." Well done if you were able to write those sentences to describe how Boudica is still remembered today, and well done for completing that learning task.

Before we finish this lesson, let's summarise what we've learned about Boudica and how she met her end.

The Roman army marched back from Wales when they heard about the attack on London.

They were not happy about it, so they marched back and the two armies met at Watling Street.

The Romans trapped Boudica and the rebellion in the valley and defeated them.

There are legends about how Boudica died.

Even though Boudica's rebellion failed, she is still remembered.

There is a statue of Boudica in London to remind us how brave she was.

Boudica is an important figure in history that we learn about.

Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.

I hope to see you in the next one.

See you next time.
